In mine production scheduling problems are well-known, where most are categorised into deterministic and non-deterministic NP-hard problems because of their complexity. Many researchers have attempted to solve the problem by applying various optimisation techniques. While using traditional methods they observed extreme difficulty in solving highly complex problems. In the 1990s, many researchers addressed long-term production scheduling (LTPS) by using simulated annealing, the genetic algorithm, the tabu search algorithm, and the ant colony algorithm. These algorithms are known as the meta-heuristic algorithms, and have proved to be the most efficient algorithms for solving LTPS thus far. The firefly algorithm is one of the best methods for visualising problems related to LTPS, and provides the best possible optimisation. It is one of the simplest methods, and easy to apply to any NP-hard problem. The experimental, and comparison with other recently published algorithms shows that the proposed algorithm is feasible, and is an effective approach for long-term production scheduling problems. The results indicated that a better solution is obtained by the proposed method, compared to other methods in terms of cumulative net present value, and average ore grade. Additionally, the CPU time via the proposed model is roughly 2.52% higher than the other method.

"The kinetics of MnO and SiO2 reduction in SiMn slags based on Assmang/Comilog ore and HCFeMn (highcarbon ferromanganese) slag were investigated between 1500 and 1650°C under a CO atmosphere. The results showed that charges containing HCFeMn slag had relatively faster reduction rates than those without. The difference in the driving force for MnO reduction was insignificant among the SiMn slags at 1500°C, which implies a low contribution of the driving force for reduction rate. The slag viscosities were also rather similar, around 1 poise at 1500°C, which could not explain the different reduction rates. Instead, the different charges containing various sulphur contents are believed to give rise to the varying reduction rates. The estimated activation energies for MnO reduction were around 500–920 kJ/mol for charges containing HCFeMn slag, and between 250–300 kJ/mol for those without. Based on the estimated kinetic parameters, the considered rate models were able to describe the reduction of MnO and SiO2 in SiMn slags between 1500 and 1650°C. IntroductionManganese ferroalloys such as ferromanganese (FeMn) and silicomanganese (SiMn) are important ingredients in steel production due to the beneficial effects of manganese on the physical properties of steel. Mn enhances the strength, toughness, and hardness of steel products, and both Mn and Si are used as deoxidizers to prevent the development of porous structures (International Manganese Institute, 2014; Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007; Subramanyam, Swansiger, and Avery, 1990; Tomota et al., 1987).The thermodynamic background of manganese ferroalloys is well established (Olsen, Tangstad and Lindstad, 2007), but kinetic information is rather scarce, especially for the SiMn process (Tranell et al., 2007; Tore-Andre Skjervheim, 1994). The absence of kinetic information makes it more difficult to understand the reduction mechanisms of MnO and SiO2. It is not clear how different raw materials affect the SiMn process. Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

"One of the main challenges in the numerical modelling of ground support in underground excavations is to reproduce the performance of the sequential installation of the reinforcement while capturing the rock mass behaviour of an advancing face in 3D. The 3D modelling approaches used to simulate the progressive advance of excavations are mostly continuum and often cannot reproduce the rock mass failure mechanisms. The 3D discrete element method (DEM) can better reproduce structurally controlled rock mass failure mechanisms and can explicitly represent the reinforcement elements. This paper builds on previous work that reproduced the structurally controlled squeezing conditions in an underground hard-rock mine using 3D DEM and the in situ behaviour of reinforcement under pull conditions. It addresses important issues on the way reinforcement is explicitly introduced in discrete element models. A pseudo-3D model is employed to overcome the computational restrictions and time limitations of a 3D modelling approach. The work focuses on the scaling of the material properties of the ground support elements when the thickness of the model is not equal to the out-of-plane spacing of reinforcement. It demonstrates the scaling methodology based on the type of the modelled reinforcement elements used and investigates the significance of this approach. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach with respect to 2D and 3D methods are discussed. The results are compared with field data and previous modelling work done at the mine. IntroductionNumerical models can provide significant insight into the anticipated behaviour of underground excavations. The modelling of ground support, however, is not a trivial exercise. An effective representation of ground support in underground excavations should capture the behaviour of both the rock mass and the support elements. When numerical models are used for design purposes, the complexity of the problem requires significant time and expertise (Sweby, Dight, and Potvin, 2016).At a laboratory scale, numerical models have successfully reproduced the results of laboratory tests on rockbolts by explicit modelling of the bolt, the borehole, and the grout. Chen and Li (2015) used a continuum FLAC3D (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2012) model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of D-bolts as observed experimentally. Grasselli (2005) used a 3D finite element code to model the behaviour of fully grouted rods and expandable bolts under shear."

Rock fall accidents continue to be the main cause of fatal and serious injuries in the mining industry. Although there has been an improvement in the FOG (falls of ground) related fatal and serious injuries over the past few years, the rate is still too high. New technology has made it possible to reduce this rate significantly. FOG accidents imply failure of the support system or the design of the support system in use. In this paper we deal with the latest technology available to assist the mines to reduce the rates of FOG related injuries and fatalities.

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. Zur Bestimmung der anisotropen Eigenschaften der Athen Schiefer wurden einaxialen, dreiaxialen und dynamischen Kompressionsversuchen an Gesteinskernen durchgeführt, bei denen die Belastungsachse verschiedenen Neigungen gegen die Schieferung hat. Die Messreihen an anisotropen unzerreissbaren Fels Samplen von Athen Schiefer wurden statistisch analysiert.

The flotation plant tailings at Kamoa Copper Mine concentrator were found to contain a high proportion of extremely fine particles. The potential issues with settling these fine solids were resolved by the use of a poly-di-allyl-di-methyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) coagulant, Flobead DB 45 VHM, in conjunction with a standard anionic polyacrylamide flocculant. This paper outlines some of the issues encountered and how they were resolved at the Kamoa concentrator. The potential to use this process and technology at other sites is also considered

Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

The utilization of centralized blasting systems is progressively becoming a feature of the South African mining industry, owing to increased pressure from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to ensure safer blasting conditions. The purpose of a centralized blasting system (CBS) is to ensure reduced blasting-related incidents and to improve the underground working environment for the mine?s employees. The brief from Samancor Western Chrome Mines (WCM) pertaining to this study was to explore?at a conceptual level?all variables pertaining to the implementation of the CBS. Studies have indicated that Sasol?s SafeBlast? was preferred due to low overall risks and user-friendliness. Empirical observations, however, indicated that attention should be given to the current shaft-clearing procedure and to the installation of additional transformers. This is required to co-ordinate the power supply from 2 level to 10 level with the required supply of the network slave station. A cost analysis indicated that an electronically initiated CBS will result in a R24 cost increase per panel, which relates to a mere 1% cost increase per panel. This cost, in addition to the R1.1 million capital cost, proved to be negligible in comparison to the possible direct and indirect costs incurred by the mine in the event of a blasting-related incident. It was found that Samancor should conduct further studies incorporating the necessary requirements to ensure a successful transition, while considering all stakeholders on the mine. This study proved that the transition to a CBS would ensure safe and efficient blasting at Samancor?s Mooinooi Mine.

"Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

Some of the challenges facing the flotation of base metal sulphides are the opening of new and varying ore bodies as well as maintaining essential skills in plants. Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. "The feed ore to Agh-Darreh gold processing plant (Takab City, Iran) contains 2 ppm Au, 7 ppm Ag, and 120 ppm Hg. After cyanide leaching of the feed at pH 10.4, 80% of the total mercury (in the form of cinnabar and metacinnabar) goes to the tailings dam. In this research, separation of mercury from the tailings by flotation was investigated. The effects of collector type and dosage, pH, and the number of cleaner stages were studied. The results showed that after two stages of cleaning a 40–62% recovery of Hg at a grade of 14.3% Hg is attainable. Recycle water from a test in which 50 g/t amyl xanthate and 30 g/t pine oil was used in the flotation stage showed no adverse effect on the leaching and adsorption of gold onto activated carbon.IntroductionMercury, most commonly found in the nature as the mineral cinnabar (HgS), is a hazardous substance because of its mobility and toxicity (Kyle et al., 2012). Roasting is the wellestablished treatment method for mercury ores, in which the sulphur is burned and volatilized and mercury recovered subsequently by cooling and condensation. However, for low-grade ores, flotation is mainly applied for primary concentration due to its comparatively low costs, low environmental hazards, and flexibility regarding feed variations (Bulatovic, 2007). Particularly, cinnabar can be easily recovered by flotation using pine oil and a collector such as xanthate (Bulatovic, 2007; Crozier, 1991). Floatability of cinnabar is reduced due to surface oxidation when it is exposed to the atmosphere after crushing. This problem can be eliminated by adding copper sulphate and lead nitrate or acetate. The best pH for cinnabar flotation is in the range of 6.5 to 8.5 according to Erspamer and Wells, (1954), who reported that cinnabar and stibnite can be floated with long-chain xanthate collectors and an alcohol frother, with cumulative recoveries of 97.8% and 94.7%, respectively. Lead acetate was used as an activator."

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. "A statistical analysis was done on the locations of 718 copper and 1 257 gold deposits in Abitibi. This area of about 20 000 square miles is one of the better-explored metal-producing areas of Canada.Patterns of clusters were studied by harmonic analysis. Several two-dimensional power spectra showed a number of distinct peaks. Sets of crest lines for patterns of interfering waves were constructed on the basis of these peaks. They pass through elongated clusters of deposits which are spaced more or less equally. For copper these periodic regularities in location may coincide with geological structures largely of Archean age (major fractures and sedimentary belts indicating synclinal structures). A directional relationship with swarms of diabase dykes of known ages and distinct attitudes indicates that the gold mineralization is, in part, younger than the copper mineralization."
