A theoretical technique has been developed and verified experimentally for determining the aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles. The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a very important property in determining where that particle deposits in the respiratory tract. Many instruments, such as impactors and cyclones, will determine the aerodynamic size distributions of aerosol particles but few analyze the particles individually. The theoretical approach of our technique is to solve, by use of high speed computers, the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the flow field around an irregular shaped particle of any contour. The computer program will then determine the drag on the particle, and thus the aerodynamic diameter of the particle can be calculated. The experimental approach has been to pass the particles through a centrifuge and collect the particles upon a collection foil. The position of a particle on the foil is an indication of its aerodynamic diameter. These particles were then shadowed in two orthogonal directions and inspected under an SEM. The top view of the particle in the SEM plus the views of the two orthogonal shadows allows one to determine the three dimensional shape of the particle. Studies have been performed on silica, coal and talc particles with aerodynamic diameters in the 1 to 4 um size range. The three dimensional shape, as is determined from SEM analysis was used in the theoretical computer program and the results compared. It was found that in most 'cases the agreement between the experimentally and theoretically determined aerodynamic diameters was within 5%.

"Health standards in the U.S. are among the highest in the world. Achieving these standards have often had an impact on productivity, slowing output, and raising prices to levels that make it difficult to compete with many foreign industries. The answer to many of these problems lies in the development of new and advanced control techniques. This overview has identified some of the major respirable dust technological hurdles that have been overcome, and provided some insight into current and future approaches underway to remove these obstacles and to provide the United States with the most advanced state-of-the-art mining industry in the world from a respirable dust standpoint. The necessary developmental research is costly and time-consuming. The long-term, high-risk aspects of this effort are being addressed by the Bureau and the Generic Center on Respirable Dust, with support by industry. This should be recognized as one of the principal agents through which the great mineral potential of this Nation can be realized, and our international status as a mining power be assured without compromising the health and welfare of those who ensure it.The problem of more stringent dust standards will continue to grow. To date, approximately 40 pct of the coal mining industry has been placed on more stringent dust standards due to quartz. Control techniques must be improved if mandated levels are to be met. As longwall production increases, dust levels will also increase. In light of the industry trend toward longwall mining, if no new control technology is available, the Federal dust standard will act as a constraint on future output per hour. The Bureau has recently completed a survey of 18 coal preparation plants; 50 pct of these operate at dust levels which exceed 2.0 mg/m3; future work will be directed toward solutions in this area. The 2.0 mg standard for respirable dust is for dust particles which are below 10 pm in diameter. Recent studies have shown that dust in the range between 10 and 25 pm can cause obstructive airway disease. The Bureau is currently determining the extent of exposure to dust in this size range from various mining operations."

This bulletin deals with the characteristic features of the principal explosives used in mining and engineering operations, and espe- cially with the tests that show the suitability of different classes of explosives for different kinds of work. The Bureau of Mines pub- lishes the report as one of a series dealing with tests of explosives and methods of reducing the risks involved in the use of explosives in mining operations. The application of explosives to engineering and mining opera- tions has increased rapidly in recent years. According to a pre- liminary report issued by the Bureau of the Census, 469,000,000 pounds of explosives was manufactured in this country during the year 1909, and the greater part of this production was used for industrial purposes. In large engineering projects and in mining operations requiring the use of explosives the selection of a suitable explosive from the many varieties offered for sale is of fundamental importance. Vari- ous considerations are involved in the selection of an explosive of proper class for the blasting to be done. Many explosives suitable for quarry work are unsuitable for use in deep mines or in close workings. In metal mining and in driving tunnels the character of the gases evolved by the explosive on detonation is an important consideration. An explosive for use in gaseous or dusty coal mines must be formulated and compounded so that its flame temperature and the height and duration of its flame are reduced enough to per- mit its being used with comparative safety. In wet workings or in submarine blasting explosives impervious to moisture are requisite. In extremely cold climates explosives that do not require thawing are desirable, provided they are equally good in other respects. An essential requirement of all explosives, especially of those for use in tropical countries, is that they shall remain stable without change in chemical or physical characteristics.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook (Volume III) contains overall employment and injury experience for coal mines-bituminous, lignite, and anthracite; coke, petroleum and natural gas; and peat and slag plants; metal and nonmetal mines; sand and gravel operations; stone quarries; metallurgical plants, including metal mills and smelters; and nonmetal mills for 1959. Volume I of the yearbook contains injury experience and employment data in the metal, non-metal, sand and gravel, slag, and quarrying industries, and the milling operations and related plants. Volume II contains the injury experience and employment data in the fuel industries--coal, coke, petroleum and natural gas, and peat. Surveys conducted by the Bureau of Mines were the source of injury and employment data used to compile the tables and furnish information for the accompanying text. Response to the surveys was voluntary except that for coal mines. The Coal Mine Safety Act requires operators of coal mines to furnish the information requested.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was administered and scored for 154 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) employees kom the US Department of Labor. These employees serve as accident investigators for serious accidents and fatalities as part of their job duties. During a workshop on stress designed for them, subjects volunteered anonymous written anecdotes, confirming and illustrating the findings. The subjects represented locations across the USA and all mining commodities: coal, metal, non-metal, stone, and sand and gravel. The Maslach Burnout Inventory assesses three aspects of experienced burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and reduced personal accomplishments. The average results of the scores for each of the three subscales for the study group of MSHA accident investigators fell in the moderate range. These scores show that the subject population was at some risk for emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, tending toward burnout. The group evidenced a lower sense of personal accomplishment in their jobs, indicating a higher risk for burnout. From this outcome accident investigators may be at moderate (note: this does not mean average) risk for burnout. The authors recommend follow-up with this population - specifically in training to work with grieving families; and greater organisational support for the accident investigators in this area would be appropriate. This report, part 3 of a series, describes and gives results of field. investigations by the Bureau of Mines on manganese resources of the Batesville district, Arkansas, from July 1956 through June 1961. The purpose of the Bureau's work was to evaluate the manganese potential of the district in fur- therance of the Government's program with respect to domestic resources of critical and strategic minerals. The work comprised areal reconnaissance, mapping, churn and core drilling, and sampling. In more recent years, the investigations were confined to manganiferous limestone, which constitutes a significant potential resource of manganiferous material. The resources of manganiferous material in the district are inferred to be on the order of 198 million long dry tons averaging between 4 and 5 percent manganese.

A multistage probability model for assessing the reliability of mineral samples following any number of stages of sample reduction is presented. Sample reduction is the process of alternately crushing or grinding and sampling mineral particles prior to assaying. The final multistage model developed accurately describes the ideal sample reduction practice. This model is based on previously developed and experimentally tested models for a single stage of sampling. The problem is approached through the probability distributions for the various stages of sampling. The probability distribution, moments, and moment relationships for a single stage of sampling are first reviewed, and the useful concept of unit moments is defined. In presenting the models for two stages of sampling, emphasis is placed on the physical description of the sample reduction process which leads quite naturally to its mathematical representation. In this representation, crushing or particle-size reduction between the stages of sampling is viewed as a random process with respect to the number and proportion of particles of the various kinds produced. The physical and mathematical description is extended to more than two stages of sample reduction, and the first three moments for any number of stages are developed. In common sample reduction practice the effects of a finite population (finite amount of material) at each stage of sampling appear to be important in describing the variance contribution of each stage. This is also true for the third moment about the mean. An example is cited in which the skewness increases by more than an order of magnitude when several stages of sampling are considered. This is largely due to the dependence of the multistage third moment about the mean on the variance. In general the model and results should be useful in helping to understand, control, and reduce the random errors that arise in the sample reduction process.

Improve the reliability and accuracy of subsurface images using constrained tomography with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. Background Geophysical tomography is a technique for imaging the structure of a rock mass using seismic or radio waves, in the same way that medical CAT scans image human tissue using X-rays. Tomography has found numerous practical applications related to mining, including lithologic and structural characterization, fracture detection and fluid monitoring, void detection, and evaluation of stress state and integrity of mine structures. Problems Two fundamental problems have largely prevented geophysical tomography from enjoying the tremendous success achieved by medical tomography. The first is a consequence of practical limitations on the placement of sources and receivers of wave energy: ideal resolution can be attained only when the region being imaged is entirely surrounded by sources and receivers, so that it is crossed by rays traveling in all possible directions. When such coverage is impossible or impractical, the inversion becomes underdetermined: there id not enough information in the measured data to provide a mathematically unique solution. The second major problem in geophysical tomography is the necessity for detailed ray tracing. Commercial software, as well as previous U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) software, employs a ray-shooting algorithm that may be unable to model some ray paths when velocity contrasts are larger than about 100%. These ?shadow zones" result in loss of data and degradation of reconstructed images.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing a process for removing metals from mining and mineral processing waste streams by precipitation. The precipitation process is accelerated by flocculation when a high molecular weight polymer is added. Infrared (IR) studies were performed on zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH);J, copper hydroxide [Cu(OH);J, and zinc sulfide (ZnS) flocculated with both non ionic and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The IR data were compared with general trends in the performance of the polymers observed during flocculation. These studies will help to understand the bonding between the precipitate and polymer and indicate the effectiveness of a flocculant for dewatering. Two types of bands showed up on the IR spectra; one type described the interlayer water of the flocs, the other described the organic bonds of the polymers. A general decrease in the areas of the three water bands, hydroxyl (O-H) stretching (3,200-3,500 cm-1), water bending (1,610-1,630 cm-1), and torsional oscillations (600-700 cm-1), indicate interlayer water being driven off, which is a favorable condition in flocculation. Shifts in the O-H stretching band indicate water bridging between the precipitate and polymer. Shifts in the amine (N-H) deformation, carbon-nitrogen (C-N) stretch band (1,600-1,610 cm-1) indicate the amine group of the PAM is involved in the bonding. Evidence suggests that ether oxygen of PEO is also involved in the bonding process.

This report is part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Idaho Land Assesment Program to study the mineral resources of priority roadless areas in Idaho. The results of these mineral inventories provide minerals information needed to make wise decisions regarding future land management practices, and to ensure a dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost. The 16,300-acre Lionhead area, studied in 1991, lies along the Montana border north of Henrys lake, 10 mi west of West Yellowstone, Montana. The study area includes much of the rugged Henrys Lake Mountains, and is largely covered with conifer forest. Several peaks are over 10,000 ft in elevation. The Lionhead area has been proposed for Wilderness. No mineral resources were identified within or near the Lionhead study area. Five prospects occur in, or within 1 mi of the area: these include 1) an intermittently used road gravel pit, 2) the Thimbleberry lateritic iron prospect, of geologic and historic interest only, 3) the Tick Heaven talc prospect, 4) the Dry Fork garnet prospect, and 5) the lynx prospect, which appears to be of historic interest only. Talc is seen only as float at the Tick Heaven prospect, but the geology is permissive of talc resources at depth. The garnet prospect, and nearby similar alluvial terrane, mainly outside the study area, appears to be the most likely setting to contain mineable resources. Examined workings include four trenches and pits in rock and one gravel pit.

In connection with its researches on the crude petroleums of the United States, the Bureau of Mines has made a particular study of apparatus for the distillation of hydrocarbon mixtures. While this study is still incomplete it has already resulted in the development of considerable laboratory and semi-plant equipment, motet of which has been described in various publications of the Bureau. The laboratory apparatus (Hempel distillation) and method gives satisfactory comparative results in the laboratory examination of crudes and have been found applicable to crudes of all types, but the agreement of laboratory and plant distillations is not as close as might be desired. This is due, in part, to limitations in size and construction of the laboratory apparatus. Some refiners claim that the Bureau of Mines' laboratory method (Hempel distillation3) for distilling crude petroleum, does not show the full gasoline content of the oil, while others have stated that it indicates more gasoline than can be obtained from the crude commercially. This difference of opinion among refiners results largely from the great variation in stills used and methods of operating them. The Bureau's experience has shown that crude oils from different fields vary widely in character; in fact, that it is not yet possible to classify crude's adequately on the basis of their Down chemical and physical characteristics. As a result of the differences that exist among crudes, and of the difficulty of designing refinery equipment, no standard practice has yet been adopted for the commercial distillation of petroleum, and ma" types of stills are used in the refineries of this country. This information circular. deais primarily with an engineering descrip- tion of a type of longwall cutting and loading machine developed by Eick- hoff Maschinenfabrik, Bochum, Germany..: This machine is supposed to have been developed and tested during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942. The only source of information is con- tained in certain literature and engineering data, with drawings which were acquired by the Allied Military Authorities when Germany was occupied; and the information will have to be limited because the writer has not seen the machine in the factory or in operation. However, the information may be of interest to the coal-mining industry in this country, and for this reason our Government has decided to publish the data procured so far. The Eickhoff cutting and loading machine is particularly suitable for the longwall mining system. It can only be used under that type of mining system and is not suitable for the more common type known in this country as room-and-pillar work. The material for the description of the machine and its operation was compiled and translated from German drawings and operating instructions. These detailed drawings and instructions are on file with the Bureau of Mines and are available for inspection by any responsible person interested in the details of the construction of the machine.

This volume is a task-by-task review of work performed in modernizing the BMINES finite element code. Much of the discussion is accomplished by cross reference to the user?s guide, which is Volume I of this two-volume report. The computer program described in this report provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geologic systems by the finite element method. The nonlinear material properties currently available in the code include isotropic, anisotropic, variable modulus, plastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic. Load application capabilities include gravity loading, surface tractions, and initial stresses. The element library includes rods, beams, plane and axisymmetric quadrilateral elements, three-dimensional brick elements, thick shell elements, and plane, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional joint elements. Special features include the ability to simulate excavation and construction sequences by means of element activity. An automatic mesh generator is included in order to simplify input preparation.

"A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

Many of the support concepts currently used in the United States originated in South Africa. These products include the Hercules Crib1, Propsetter, MX Prop, Rocprop, and Spider Prop. Another recent development has been the introduction of hydraulic prestressing units, such as the Jackpot system, to various U.S. standing support systems. Several other prop-type supports with similarities to systems used in South Africa are in use in U.S. coal mines. Some exciting new developments that improve the installation and yield performance of props are also underway. In addition to prop-type supports, crib-type supports and single-unit systems such as the Can support are also frequently utilized in longwall tailgates in the U.S. The goal in U.S. support development is to enhance roof support capability while alleviating material handling barriers to reduce injuries associated with support handling and installation. Support products are generally full-scale tested at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the unique Mine Roof Simulator load frame. The performance testing protocol is designed to simulate the full range of load conditions that occur in underground mining to identify the performance deficiencies and limitations of the support products. Once the products complete the performance evaluation, they are implemented into the NIOSH Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP). STOP is a window’s based software program that was developed by NIOSH for facilitating the design of standing roof support systems. STOP has become an industry standard to compare the performance capabilities and facilitate the application of these support products into various mining conditions. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the support design and application philosophy in the United States.

During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of the examinations was to disclose new sources of industrial limestone and to indicate the commercial potentialities of little-known and undeveloped deposits. These examinations were part of a long-range program of investigation of mineral resources of the Pacific Northwest. The following report on the Whitechuck travortine deposit is one of a series prepared in the course of the investigations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 32,270-hectare Cache Peak study area in 1992; the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel examined and sampled prospect workings; 50 rock and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 km southeast of Challis, Idaho, in the Challis National Forest. According to May, 1993, Bureau of Land Management mining claim records there were no current mining claims located inside the study area. Up to 100 claims may have been located in the study area in the past. Gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc: Significant analyses, poor exposure precludes resource estimate. Limestone: More than I billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for a variety of uses, markets too distant to favor mining. Dolomite: More than 1 billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for producing magnesium metal, markets too distant to favor mining. Sand and Gravel: Several million m3, but markets and transportation costs do not favor mining. Chalcedonic nodules: Two localities in the study area may be of interest to hobbyists who cut and polish stone. There is no reported past production from the study area.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the noncondensable cases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of uses produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills.
