The Bureau of Mines conducted heat-content measurements above 298.15° K for dehydrated analcite (NaAISi2O6) to 1,000°K, kaliophilite (KA1Si04) to 1,800° K, and leucite (KAlSi206) to 1,800° K. Heat content and entropy increments were tabulated, and the heat content data, were given in equation form. A first order transition was noted for kaliophilite near 810° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole. Leucite had a second order transition which became complete near 955° K. In this transition a crystal change occurred from tetragonal (low-temperature form) to cubic (high-temperature form).

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

Provide the U.S. mining industry with a user friendly computer program to calculate stresses in underground coal mines in order to improve safety conditions for mine workers. Capabilities of MULSIM/NL MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines. It can analyze one or two parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) non¬linear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to efficiently simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/ NL computes energy release rate due to mining using the most recent concepts advanced by Salamon.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests on seven samples of Florida phosphate operations.slimes to develop a method to recover phosphate presently being discarded because of its small grain size. A system of hydrocyclones and hydroseparators was used to recover up to 96 pct of the plus 400-mesh material from the slimes. This plus 400-mesh material was subjected to fatty acid flotation, and concentrates containing up to 33.4 pct P205 were produced. As much as 88 pct of the phosphate (P205) was recovered from the plus 400-mesh material, and up to 29.6 pct was recovered from the total slimes.

"This article first describes the impact of respirable dust on the health of miners in underground coal mines in the United States of America. Second, it identifies the major sources of dust generation, namely cutting tools in the road headings. Two surveys associated with cutting tools were made to determine the useful life of these cutting tools, and to determine the effect of cutting tool wear on productivity of the continuous miners. Third, this article presents the results of a series of experiments carried out in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories at West Virginia University in order to study: 3.1 the effect of cutting tool rate of wear on respirable dust generation, 3.1.1 the effects of rock materials on tool wear and respirable dust generation, 3.1.2 the effect of cutting tool geometric parameters on respirable dust generation, and 3.1.3 the effect of tip materials used in the cutting tool on respirable dust generation. Recommendations in regard to cutting tool design are also presented in this paper.Silica and coal dust are the two major elements affecting the health of underground miners. According to Lemen [1] approximately 1,500 men died due to breathing in silica dust in 1936 while tunneling through a mountain of mostly silica, near the town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Coal dust resulting in lung diseases in one of the major health hazards in underground coal mines. The impact of black lung on miners, coal workers' pneumoconioisis (CWP), has ranged from 16,000 to 23,000 each year since 1982 [1].The trend for conventional mining to continuous machine cutting of coal, using more productive machinery, is inexorable. Intolerable level of dust generated at the face is an indication of inefficient coal/rock cutting by these machines. The federal goverment of the United States paid about 11.7 billion dollars in workmen's compensation to more than 470,000 miners with CWP [2]. Bieniawski and Zipf [3] reported that annual benefit payments were about 2 billion dollars. The enactment of the Health and Safety Act in 1969 in the United States triggered the initial investigation into coal cutting mechanisms and cutting tool designs.The surveys concerning the utilization of cutting bits and performance of continuous miners in underground coal mines were made in order to have first hand information about bit consumption and coal produ¬ction.Three types of used bits, commonly utilized cutting tools on continuous miners, were collected from different coal mines. The used bits were grouped into symmetrically and asymmetrically worn bits. Distribution analysis for weight loss and conical height loss was done. Details of the results are presented elsewhere [4], here the results are summarized briefly. The analysis shows that approximately 50% of the collected bits have worn asymmetrically, which shows that many bits do not rotate properly during cutting. Analysis of the distribution of bit wear showed that the degree of bit wear varied from one type to another and with mining conditions. On average, the weight loss of the used bits was 4% to 7% with a maximum of 31%. Correspondingly, the loss of the conical height was observed to vary between 11% and 23% with a maximum of 71%. Figure 1 shows typical data associated with some of the used bits."

"INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. The results of these surveys are contained in a memorandum report prepared in December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Marshall and Bird have published the results of a cooperative investigation by the Bureau of Mines in which they developed a procedure for measuring the agglutinating value of coal.4 As stated in their paper, the procedure outlined was suggested by the early worn of Richters5 and Campredon,6 whose procedures were hurriedly modified to meet the need of an investigation then in progress. Since the publicatien of that paper, further work has been done in an attempt to show how the variables involved affect the concordance of the results, in order that such results may be obtained in different laboratories. Briefly, Marshall and Bird's method for determining the agglutinating value of coal consists in carbonizing an intimate mixture of 10 parts by weight of sand and 1 part by weight of coal in a porcelain crucible at a uniform temperature of 950° C. in a, vertical, cylindrical, electrically-heated furnace. After carbonization, the resultant buttons are crushed in a testing machine and the breaking strengths recorded in grams. The agglutinating value reported is the average breaking strength of 10 buttons. The coal for the test is prepared by crushing to pass a 100-mesh screen. The sand used as a diluent is sized between 40 and 50 mesh sieves with openings of 0.381 icon and 0.279 millimeters, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal to develop technology that can conserve domestic mineral resources investigated beneficiation methods for recovering phosphate minerals from two Southern Florida deposits with high magnesium content. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no coarse pebble concentrate could be produced from either deposit. Conventional fatty acid-fuel oil batch flotation tests on two phosphate samples, analyzing 6.8 and 8.5 pct P205, yielded concentrates containing 28.97 to 29.80 pct P20S at recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 76.9 pct of the flotation feed. The MgO content ranged from 1.20 to 1.36 pct. Bubbling S02 gas through an aqueous concentrate slurry, further reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8 pct, but with a concomitant loss in the phosphate recovery. Settling characteristics of slimes from both phosphate samples showed a slow settling rate, which is a typical characteristic of other slimes in the region.

ROCK BEHAVIOR has proved of national interest in a variety of fields. The behavior of rock consequent to a nuclear blast was used to detect such blasts, as criteria for the design of underground military defense installations that would resist nuclear blasts, and for judging the feasibility for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. An obvious peaceful application of nuclear explosives would be for large-scale rock excavation, and plans were presented during the year to improve the present Panama Canal or create a new canal by this method. These plans were based largely on earlier crater tests that demonstrated rock behavior when subjected to a buried nuclear blast. A knowledge of rock behavior under impact was used to evaluate the materials of the moon by means of the geometric configurations visible in the close-up pictures of the moon surface taken by the U.S. rocket Ranger 7. The composition of the moon must be considered in devising methods for taking samples of the surface layers or in designing underground shelters as bases for future explorations of the moon.

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. he Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC)~ and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of seals and water trap designs for use in underground coal mines. This program is being conducted at PRC's Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. Seals designed with a 40-cm-thick polymer (polyurethane) and aggregate core between two dry-stacked (no mortar) concrete block walls (coated on out by sides) withstood a 138-kPa pressure pulse while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. Similar seal designs utilizing a 97-cm-thick, 91-kg/m7-density, polymer-only core did not survive; however, a 5 1 -cm-thick, 203-kg/mi-density, polymer-only core seal successfully withstood the explosion pressures. Evaluations of cellular concrete seal designs have shown that a two-pour slurry injection technique did not adversely affect the strength of the 1.2-m-thick seals when subjected to a 138-kPa pressure pulse. Two seal designs utilizing low-density cementitious block have also been evaluated with successful results. In addition to seal strength tests, various 15- and 30-cm-diam U-shaped water trap pipes and a water trough design were evaluated under explosion conditions and were shown to be inadequate when evaluated under worst-case conditions. Simple modifications to the various water trap designs were successfu1 in preventing the passage of explosion flame through the trap.

The use of a partially slotted 6.5-inch-inside-diameter vertical pipe to remove methane from a longwall gob area at a depth of 2,260 feet in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed was investigated. The value of gas removed by such a pipe under free-flow conditions was found to equal the cost of the installation in this case. Approximately 25 percent of the available methane passed through the pipe without the use of an exhauster; an additional 10 percent was removed when an exhauster was employed. The diversion of methane through a vertical slotted pipe to the surface permitted the use of increased mining rates and decreased the ventilation air requirements.

Illinois has the largest reported bituminous coal resources of any state and is one of largest coal-producing states in the nation. Coal-bearing rocks underlie about 65 percent of Illinois, including all or part of 86 of its 102 counties. An estimated 18 1 billion tons of coal resources are still in the ground. Using present mining methods, more than 30 billion tons of coal are classified as recoverable. This represents almost one-eighth of the total recoverable reserves of all types of coal in the United States. The state's surface mining regulatory program was conditionally approved June 1,1982. It received full approval October 25,1988. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 1, 1982, and the AML emergency authority June 11, 1984.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

The degree of reduction of various silica-graphite mixtures was studied in a batch reactor to determine optimum physical conditions for maximizing the carbothermic reduction of silica. The extent of interaction was determined for reactant mixtures in loose powder and briquet forms at pressures less than 0.01 torr and temperatures up to 1,445° C. Molar ratios were varied from 0.05 to 6.5 with maximum reaction at a ratio of about 1.5. The solid-solid reaction did not appear to involve gaseous intermediates. The extent of reaction better correlated with the number of interparticle contacts than with the true surface area of the reactants. Carbonized dextrose was a better reductant than graphite.

Problems of design involving the high-temperature characteristics of materials of construction have focused attention on tungsten, the metal with the highest melting point. To study the properties of this metal a method was needed to produce tungsten of high purity easily and consistently. The Bureau of Mines has made tungsten metal in massive form on a laboratory scale by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). Metal made in this manner had a purity of 99.99 percent or better, with reference to all detectable impurities, including gases. The process tolerated a wide variation in operating conditions, and the results with respect to total impurities as low as 0.01 percent were reproducible.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a dependable and economic method for recovering spodumene and mica from pegmatites of the type found in Gaston County, N. C. Laboratory batch tests and continuous flotation tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of treating the ore by flotation to recover high-grade spodumene and mica concentrates. The spodumene flotation circuit yielded concentrates containing 6.50 percent lithia (Li20), with an overall recovery of 81.8 percent of the lithia in the ore, The mica circuit yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica, with a recovery of 82.5 percent of the mica in the spodumene tailing.

During the year 1927 the Bureau of Mines, at the request of a number of quarry operators, undertook to make a study of quarry operating costs in order to determine average costs for certain operating conditions and to suggest a model cost accounting system for quarry operations. A detailed questionnaire was prepared and mailed by the bureau to all quarries on its records as employing ten or more men in 1926.
