A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. Request for a copy of the program should be directed to the Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center.

The Bureau of Mines is developing nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas derived from coal to synthetic natural gas. The present report describes the relationship between the composition of aluminum-nickel alloys in the composition range NiAl3 to Ni2Al3 equilibrated at 840° C and the properties of catalysts obtained from them. Methanation activity was determined in the temperature range of 300° to 360° C in a flowing gas stream containing 1 pct CO, 8 pct H2, and the remainder He. One part per million of H2S was added to the gas stream at 400° C to evaluate the susceptibility of catalysts to sulfur poisoning. The total surface area was measured by the adsorption of nitrogen at liquid nitrogen temperature, and the active surface area was measured by the adsorption of hydrogen at room temperature. Total surface area and active surface area were found to increase with increasing proportion of aluminum-saturated Ni2Al3 in the precursor alloy, but methanation activity and resistance to poisoning by H2S were nearly constant. However, the methanation activity of the catalyst prepared from stoichiometric Ni2Al3 was less than half that of the other catalysts.

"INTRODUCTION Characteristics of the mineral products that are to be contrasted herein are net energy consumed in grinding to a definite top limiting size and size distribution of the ground products. Through contrasts of these grinding characteristics this paper to differences in related mineral products and in unlike products. For,example, in anticipation of the data to follow, although Joplin chert and Babeitt taconits are running mates in defying the best crushing machinery, taconite is one of the more docile and Joplin chert one of the most refractory mineral products ordinarily fed to a grinding Routine grinding tests on a great variety of ores and tabulation of the findings have been covered amply by Lennox 4/ and by Maxon 5/ and associates. In contrast to that work, the present paper is a record of random tests made over a long period, and each answered an urgent question at the moment. The work was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama. "INTRODUCTION The Copper Butte mine was examined, surveyed and mapped (fig. 1) by a Bureau of Mines engineer in January 1944. As a result, it was decided to diamond-drill the deposit, using Bureau of Mines equipment, and drilling was started October 14, 1944, under the supervision of two Bureau engineers, and stopped April 5, 1945. Nine holes were drilled for a total of 1,274 feet, not including 48 feet on a lost hole. Figures 2 and 3 are sections at AA' and BB' of figures 1, and show the adjusted average assays of drill-hole samples. Figures 4 and 5 are separate maps of holes 4 and 6, respectively.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

"INTRODUCTION The Margerum bauxite district, in Colbert County, Ala. was investigated in December 1940 and in February 1943 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines .3/ A geologist of the Federal Geological Survey investigated and mapped the district in the fall of 1942.These preliminary investigations indicated bauxite showings over an area about a mile long by 2,000 feet wide. It was felt that the chances were good for finding one or more large deposits of low- to medium-grade bauxite. The location - within 35 miles of the alumina plant of the Reynolds Metals Co. atLister Hill, Ala. – made it especially attractive. A field office was established in Iuka, Miss., on May 19, 190,, and mineral agreements were executed with four landowners covering 1,146.6 cores.The drilling on the project was done under contract. The power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes, where there was little or no gravel overburden, and sampled the old test pits.The Federal Geological Survey, after thorough study of the district, recommended 54 drill holes 4/ to delimit the known deposits and to search for possible extensions. After the drilling started, many of these locations eliminated, and others were changed upon the basis of information gathered from the holes as they were drilled."

"INTRODUCTION The method of differential thermal analysis suggested by Le Chatelier (1)1 in 1887 has recently emerged as an outstanding means of studying the constitution of various substances, particularly clays, soils, and miscellaneous hydrous materials (2). The literature ably discusses the applications and results obtained but has paid too little attention to specific details of construction of the apparatus. Knowledge of the apparatus is of importance to the experienced research man as is extremely useful to the novice v ho ventures into this field of analysis. Further, it is generally acknowledged that the variations in design and conditions of operation are one of the essential causes for differences in characteristic temperatures as reported by various investigators. A step forward in the elimination of such differences is the publication of the details of construction and operation of a simple and inexpensive apparatus that has proved useful at the southern Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, where it was used in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."

The results obtained in a study of the stress conditions existing in a drill bit-point area and in the underlying rock, when the bit was in full but nonpenetrative contact with the rock, are presented. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was the preliminary exploratory phase of a long-range program of research on rock drilling to establish criteria for the maximum economically feasible rate of rock penetration. The photoelastic technique of experimental stress analysis was the principal method used to obtain the data. Transparent models and transmitted light were employed to investigate patterns in drill-bit models and isotropic materials under the bit when subjected to a concentrated static load. Comparative stress data for anisotropic rock were obtained by the reflective photoelastic technique. Brittle lacquer and an extensometer were used obtain supplementary information wherever substantiating data were desired to check photoelastic results. The zone of maximum shear occurs along an arc near the contact face of the bit. The stress distribution pattern in an isotropic model rock near the area contacted by the bit was nearly a mirror image of that exhibited within a similar areal zone of the bit. The stress pattern in granodiorite specimens was similar, though not symmetric, to the pattern in the isotropic model rock. The asymmetry of the stress pattern in the granodiorite was attributed to the anisotropic characteristics of the constituent minerals of various sizes.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

Uninterrupted shaft operations are an important economic factor in mine operation, and good shaft support is an important aid in preventing accidents and interruptions. More permanent supports can cut the hazards, costs, and delay incident to replacement of conventional timbers, especially where subject to decay. Installation of prestressed, precast concrete shaft supports in 100 feet of shaft at the Banner mine, Lordsburg, N. Mex., nave a satisfactory permanent installation in a section of shaft that had given trouble with conventional timbering. Use of rock bolts supporting gunited wire netting around the rock walls of the shaft prevented sloughing. No attempt was made in this paper to arrive at comparative costs of installation of various types of support. However, it was indicated that use of a lighter weight aggregate would be desirable in further use if prestressed precast members as placed in the Banner mine.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 61 surface coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator's vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, ?A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body Vibration.? The comparison showed that about ha]f of all surface coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only on the order of 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

Data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has shown that roof bolting machine (RBM) operators are the second most likely type of underground mining machine operator to be are over exposed to noise, per the MSHA Permissible Exposure Limit. In response to this, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a project to develop engineering noise controls for roof bolting machines. Key to this research is an evaluation of the duty cycle of a typical roof bolting machine operation and this paper presents the results of such an exercise for data collected at two cooperating coalmines. The evaluation entails a time motion study of an operators' shift, logging each activity for time (e.g., tramming the machine, drilling holes, installing the roof bolt, etc.) and the noise levels associated with each task with a Larson Davis Spark 705+ dosimeter. NIOSH post processed the data to determine which tasks the operator devotes the most time to and the noise dosage accumulated during those tasks. These results provide insight into which portion of the operators' duty cycle is the most prominent contributor to noise exposure and thus, where research activities for the development of engineering noise controls should be focused. It was determined that the task of drilling holes is the most significant source of the operators' noise exposure and project research has focused on engineering noise controls to reduce the noise emissions generated during the drilling portion of the machine duty cycle.

"INTRODUCTION The Friedensville district was one of the most important zinc-producing areas in the United States from 1859 to 1893. The ore minerals near the surface were principally calamine and smithsonite, but with depth sphalerite was found in increasing proportions. The ore bodies of the district are reported to have been in chimneys, occurring in folded and faulted beds of Beekmantown limestone of Ordovician age.The Correll was one of five mines near Friedensyille that were exten¬sively exploited. The high-grade ore shoots were mined to a depth of several hundred feet, but it is believed that inability to compete with lower-cost production elsewhere, rather than exhaustion of the ore bodies, compelled the mines to close.There is no record to indicate that any attempt was made during the period of operation to explore for additional ore in the limestone beds down the dip below the mine workings. The possibility that exploration might reveal additional ore in the limestone beds below the known ore shoots led the Bureau of Mines to diamond-drill the Correll property between September 1943 and January 1944."

Prolonged exposure to noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components, known as noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is the most common occupational disease in the United States today. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is addressing NIHL in the mining industry through several research efforts. This paper presents a general review of NIHL, the status of NIHL in mining, the results of the longwall noise surveys, and a review of the longwall engineering controls research efforts.

Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. "INTRODUCTION When permissible explosives are used in c procedure recommended by the Bureau of Mines 5/ they are relatively safe, and, no mine explosions are known to have resulted from this type of blasting. However, unsafe blasting practices - the use of nonpermissible explosives or the improper use of permissible explosives - have caused many serious disasters. In fact, such unsafe practices constitute the third most important cause (exceeded only by electricity and the use of open lights and smoking) of coal-mine explosions in the United States. During 1929-1947, inclusive, 81 explosions, resulting in 475 fatalities, were ascribed to unsafe blasting. 6/The hazards of black powder, dynamite, and other nonpermissible explosives in coal mines have been recognized for many years, and attention has been called to this in numerous Bureau of Mines publications. Not only can these explosives ignite flammable gas-air mixtures readily, but they can also ignite coal dust, as has been illustrated repeatedly in tests and at educational public demonstrations at Bruceton and elsewhere. 7/Research in the Experimental coal mine 8/ of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., and unfortunate experience in commercial mines have proved beyond doubt that improper use of explosives that have passed the official permissibility tests can cause as explosions. In limited tests with a fey American permissibles at Bruceton, and in more, extensive tests with permitted explosives at the Polish experiment station, 9/ explosive charges were fired from steel cannon and freely suspended in coal-dust clouds. In these experiments coal dust was ignited under some conditions. However, it has never been definitely established whether permissible explosives can initiate coal-dust explosions when fired in a coal seam. It is true that a few mine explosions were strongly suspected to have resulted from ignition of coal dust by misuse of permissibles, but in each case other complicating factors introduced some doubt in the minds of the investigators. Full knowledge of the problem is important, because coal dust is present in most blasting operations in coal."

The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . The Mining Law of 1876 remained in force , without amendment , until it was superseded by the law of May 25 , 1904 , an enactment modeled after the Mexican mining law and designed especially to encourage the investment of
