In 2007, a total of 2,030 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.4% (n=1,875) and anthracite mines 7.6% (n=155) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 72% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.4%), West Virginia (22.6%), and Pennsylvania (20.5%).

This report describes the redesign, development and field demonstration of a remote shotcrete lining system, capable of operating in shafts and mines from 8 to 16 feet in diameter at depths up to 1000 feet. The original contractural scope of work outlining problems and remedial measures associated with a previous unit proved inadequate. Significant additional effort was necessary in order to fulfill the project objectives of producing a functionally reliable remote shotcrete lining system. Included with the engineering and technical description of the system, is a comprehensive technology package. Included with this material is ancillary equipment, materials selection procedures, mix-design data, quality control and assurance program, selection and training of personnel and the organizational aspects required to operate the entire system. The report concludes with details of a successfully completed borehole lining operation at the Nevada Test Site. An irregular 104 inch diameter borehole was lined at a rate of 4.8 feet per hour and 20 feet per hour respectively for 8-9 inch and a 2 to 3 inch shotcrete thickness.

Intensive investigations of domestic manganese deposits were conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey during the earlier part of the war minerals investigations when there was doubt that the quantity of manganese needed to produce the greatly increased tonnage of steel demanded for war supplies could' to obtained from its customary sources. Domestic deposits of ores that contain sufficient manganese for direct production of ferromanganese essential in steel Manufacture are generally small, and the bulk of the supply is imported. One of the few large deposits of low-grade manganese ore known in the United States is in the Artillery Peale district in southern Mohave County, Ariz. Manganiforous sediments underlie a very large area. Several large groups of claims, covering the most of the manganese-bearing ground, wore assembled in 1929 and 1930. The greater part of this area was leased by the M. A. Hanna Co. in 1937. Investigations by engineers and geologists for this company revealed that the average content of manganese is very low; but that the Maggio Canyon area, about 180 acres, contains higher-grade material. The company put down 28 vertical diamond-drill holds to explore this ground, under the direction of B. N. Wobbor, geologist.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. This paper describing the methods of dredging and treatment of gold-bearing gravels at the Lancha Plana Gold Dredging Co.'s dredge is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The dredge is located near the Mokelumne River, 12 miles west of San Adreas, Calif.; it is accessible by an improved dirt road from Jackson, which is about 20 miles distant.

"INTRODUCTION Anyone who has had frequent occasion to compare methods of analysis and testing as employed in European countries with those used in the United States has felt the need of a table or graph giving the relationship between the units of measurement of finely powdered materials. Most of the few published comparisons include only two series of sieves and often require tedious interpolations to adapt the data of one series to the series more familiar to the reader. Solvig, senior chemist, for valuable suggestions in preparing the manuscript.SQUARE-MESH-SIEVE SERIES OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIESSieving analyses of powdered materials have been placed on a comparable basis in different countries by the introduction and adoption of standard sieve-scale series. Series of wire-cloth square-mesh sieves in common I oratory and industrial use include: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy standard laboratory screens (I.M.M.); British Standards Institution standard for fine-mesh test sieves (B.S. or B.S.I.); Tyler standard sereer-scale sieves; United States standard sieve series; Deutsche Industrial-Nermen (DIN); and the standard control sieves of the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR). With the exception of the I.M.M. series in which the opening is equal to the diameter of the wire, the general proportions of the various series of sieves are similar. The size of British and American sieves is designated by the number of meshes or openings per linear inch or, more recently, by the number of microns per linear sieve opening. In a technical sense the word ""mesh"" is meaningless, unless the diameter of the wire is also given, so that the size of the opening can be determined. On the Continent sieves are designated either by the nunber of Mesh per linear centimeter or by the number of openings per square centimeter."

Mining men and State officials in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time with various complicated questions . In recent years these questions have tended to increase with the use of mechanical appliances . Twenty- five years ago electricity had hardly been used in mines . To - day there is practically no other means of transmitting energy employed in American mines , except in metal mines where compressed air is used for drilling and small portable hoists . In coal mines there has been a great increase in mechanization and a tendency to concentrate the mining operation , which has resulted in attendant difficulties of ventilation and intensified the danger of coal - dust in bituminous and subbituminous mines . The answers to the questions which arise are not always obvious , as is shown by the fact that even able , experienced men differ in their opinions of the best way to overcome a particular mining hazard . The difficulty of solving the problems is also demonstrated by the varying provisions in mine safety rules , both in official regulations and in the rules of those mining companies who are endeavoring to do more than follow the letter of the law . Such differences of opinion on the best way of meeting a difficult situation are often found within the same mining organization , and so it has been in the Bureau of Mines .

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. This volume, the first of a six volume final report, provides an executive summary of the research and results carried out under a grant from the U. S. Bureau of Mines on underground coal mine ventilation. Under the project, a mine ventilation simulator was developed. Sensitivity of leakage and friction factors on the total quantity and pressure requirements was studied. The simulator was applied to a new mine under development, and to an operating mine, to demonstrate the usefulness of the simulator in ventilation planning and in evaluating proposed changes to existing ventilation system. The Goat Rocks RARE II further planning areas contain no known mineral resources and have very low mineral potentials. County mining records show only one mining claim area; however, no mineralized material was found at the described location. Andesite suitable for building stone may be present, but similar material can be quarried more economically elsewhere. Several anthracite coal prospects are near the area, but the likelihood of finding an economic deposit of coal or other fuel is very low.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1990 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. Among the most significant to be produced in Africa were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, coal, cobalt, copper, diamond, fluorspar, gold, lithium minerals, manganese, phosphate, platinum-group metals, the titanium minerals-ilmenite and rutile, vanadium, vermiculite, uranium, and zircon. Several of these, chromite, cobalt, diamond, and manganese, were not produced in the United States. Despite the underdevelopment of much of Africa, mineral raw materials playa very important part in the national economies of many of its countries. In many cases, the production of minerals is the dominant economic activity in the country, often having the largest and most sophisticated work force. In several countries, one or two mineral commodities are dominant in a weakly diversified economy. Among these are petroleum and diamonds in Angola, petroleum in the Congo, gold in Ghana, bauxite in Guinea, uranium in Niger, phosphate in Senegal and Togo, and copper and cobalt in Zaire and Zambia.

This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. "INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The Millet copper deposit is on the north shore of Iliamna Lake in southwestern Alaska. Copper mineralization occurs in a zone of altered limestone .adjacent to and intruded by a diorite porphyry with some diabase facies. During 1949 and 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated this prospect as a part of the U. S. Department of the Interior program in Alaska for the development of critical and strategic minerals. Field work was begun August 8, 1949; it was recessed November 28, 1949, because of inclement weather. The work was resumed Nay 28, 1950, and completed July 3, 1950. The program of investigation by the Bureau of Nines included topographic surveying, machine and hand trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling the zones of mineralization. This report outlines the general geology of the area, gives a description of the deposit, and contains the factual data resulting from work by the Bureau of Mines.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

This report describes a study that examined load transfer mechanics in longwall shield supports as part of the Bureau of Mines research program to optimize support design and utilization. The objectives of this study were to determine the contribution of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly towards full shield vertical and hor-izontal load resistance capability and to determine how the interaction of these members affect overall shield response. Load-displacement characteristics of the leg cylinders and the caving shield-lemniscate assembly, independent of the full shield, were evaluated from controlled displacement tests in the Bureau's mine roof simulator and responses were compared with full shield responses to identify load transfer mechanics. It is concluded from this research that the participation of the caving shield-lemniscate assembly significantly affects the response of the shield support. It is likely that the caving shield-lemniscate assembly is not participating fully in current shield designs because of translational freedom in the numerous pin joints. It is also concluded that the shield will respond differently to different boundary condi-tions resulting from interaction with the strata. This report describes load transfer mechanics of shield supports and the implication of these research findings on shield design and utilization.

In the development of commercial vehicles as well as of passenger cars, the effects of vehicle vibrations on operating safety, health and comfort can only be predicted by numerical simulation when appropriate occupant models are available. Such models must be based on human anatomy and have dynamic properties of real humans in order to achieve realistic results. Since human dynamic behavior depend on posture and percentile, the occupant model needs to be adjustable to these parameters with respect to geometry and dynamic properties [1,2]. Dynamic Human Finite-Element-Model CASIMIR CASIMIR is a non-linear, dynamic finite-element-model of the human body. It consists of a dynamic model of the upper torso with head, neck, shoulders and arms as well as of a dynamic model of the lower extremity with pelvis and legs. The most important part is the lumbar area with dynamic non-linear models of the lumbar spine and of back and abdominal musculature. The frequency-dependent characteristics of the intervertebral discs and the effects of muscle activation and non-linear frequency-dependent muscle properties are included. In the latest stage of development, CASIMIR has been equipped with a compliant model of the body surface in the contact areas to the seat. This results in a very realistic transmission of static and vibrational forces into the human body, see fig. 1. Intense model verification and validation has been performed in all stages of model development, starting with validation of small components like intervertebral disc, ending with validation of whole-body-vibrations using measurements of the dynamic mass / mechanical impedance [4]. For an in-detail examination of stresses in the vertebral bodies and discs, a non-linear submodel of the lumbar spine with an increased number of degrees of freedom can be coupled to the whole-body-model, enabling the researcher to examine local effects of vibrations and single shocks on the lumbar materials. [ ] Since it is well known that human dynamic behavior is significantly affected by anthropometric data and posture, CASIMIR can be individualized to the anthropometric status of single individuals or to the mean values for specific percentile groups. Furthermore, posture can be adjusted to the seating conditions applicable to a specific vehicle. Posture modification capabilities include the variation of the lumbar lordosis [3].

The Union of South Africa has been interested in oil shale for a long time, and deposits of oil shales, torbanites, and similar rocks have been found in many parts of the country. (Fig. 1.) Samples differ markedly in oil yield and in the characteristics of the oil. The strata vary in thickness, and most of the deposits that have been found are in unfavorable locations because of remoteness from markets or absence of transportation facilities. This report deals mainly with the torbanite deposit near Ermelo, Transvaal, in the Union of South Africa, and the operations of the South African Torbanite Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as Satmar), in mining the torbanite, retorting it, and refining the crude oil.
