The thermodynamic data presented in the literature for zirconium compounds are incomplete. Among the compounds for which adequate data are Zacking are zirconium fluoride and sulfate. This paper reports experimental heat-content values determined by the Bureau of Mines for these two zirconium salts throughout the temperature range of 273° to 1,200° K. No crystalline transformations were found in the two compounds investigated, and neither of the compounds melted over the temperature range studied. MATERIALS TESTED The Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Oak Ridge, Tenn., supplied the two zirconium salts used in this investigation. The zirconium fluoride was high- purity reactor grade material. The zirconium sulfate contained between 0.01 and 0.10 percent hafnium and calcium, and other elements in concentrations below 0.01 percent, A spectrographic analysis of the two compounds is given in table 1. Before use the compounds were dried at 400° C. for several hours to removed adsorbed moisture.

A study was made of the effectiveness of dust-control methods being employed in connection with continuous-mining operations. Airborne dust exposures of workmen and dust loadings of return air were determined for six types of continuous-mining machines. The conditions required for control of dust exposure are summarized and include ventilation of the working face by an exhaust system. Return-air dust loadings ranging up to 13 pounds per hour are reported.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel- powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the mine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.

Information on the performance of coal-cleaning equipment is necessary to provide a basis for evaluating the performance of existing plants and projecting that of new plants. Performance data can contribute greatly to the wise selection and effective use of coal-washing equipment. The Bureau of Mines has published information on the performance of several commercial plants, as well as of some laboratory-scale equipment, 5 (2-9, 11, 12, 17-12, 21-25) from time to time for a number of years. A more intensive program to provide such information for all the principal types of cleaning equipment is underway. The present evaluation of table performance is part of this program.

This report presents the results of a study to develop a detailed mining method design based on longwall mining with sublevel caving. The method is applicable to low-dipping coal seams 20 or more feet thick such as are found in the western United States. The report covers (1) the development and description of the mining method, (2) evaluation of the engineering feasibility of the design, (3) estimates of productivity and recovery, and (4) an engineering cost analysis and economic feasibility evaluation of the mining method design.

Although chromite deposits occur in California , Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming , Pennsylvania, Maryland , New Mexico , North Carolina, Alaska, and the Phillippine Islands , less than 1 percent of the ore used in the United States is obtained from these deposits . Most of the ore in peacetime has been supplied by imports from South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey, and Cuba . The mineral chromite , the most important chromium ore , is an isometric spinel with an ideal composition of FeO Cr2O3 , but commercial chromite has the variable composition (Fe , Mg) Oʻ (Cr , Al , Fe) 203. Chromite has a black color , a specific gravity of 4.4 , and a hardness of 5.5 . In thin section the color is reddish -brown to black . Chromite occurs in dunite and pyroxenitic ultrabasic rocks , which are composed of iron- magnesium silicate minerals such as olivine , saxonite , serpentine , and enstatite . These are also the gangue minerals . Com mercial ore occurs at random in the country rock in kidney- or lens - shaped deposits , which have no apparent relationship to each other . Stringers , veins , and bands often cut the country rock without regard either to fracture or to other deposits . Some beach sands , such as those in southern Oregon, contain chromite .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the temperature and thermal stress distributions in thin circular disks subjected to peripheral thermal shock at various rates of heat transfer. The theoretical analysis is based on one-dimensional radial heat flow by conduction in the disk, and on heat exchange by convection between the disk and its surroundings. Preliminary experimental data obtained from shock tests on thin circular disks of basalt, quartzite, and taconite show reasonably good agreement with theory. The case of constant properties and plane stress is treated. Solutions of the stress distribution are presented for both cooling and heating shocks. The elastic energy stored at fracture is examined, and on this basis an average stress theory is formulated. Physical properties vital to the studies include thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, tensile strength, Young's modulus, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. This work is of importance in predicting the thermal shock responses of a rock body of finite size.

The response of minerals in magnetic separators is in accordance to dynamic rather than static magnetic susceptibility values . The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments with surface support liners which includes shotcrete and thin spray-on liners (also referred to as sealants, coatings and membranes) from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a surface support material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of surface support liners, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective liner material application. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and thin spray-on liner materials. Liner material performance to date was evaluated on a regular basis over a three year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously affect the bond of the liner material to the mine roof and rib.

Hence a quick and thorough survey of domestic resources was necessary. . Throughout the war the scope and volume of the war-minerals work increased until it covered practically every mineral that was known t.o be or was liable to be in short supply.

Production of small tonnages of asbestos has been reported from 18 California counties; 16 additional counties have occurrences of asbestos. The counties in the northern part of California that have had a recorded production are: Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, E1 Dorado, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Shasta, Siskiyou, Trinity, and Tuolumne. No deposit in the State has maintained consistent production. Serpentinized peridotites (potential chrysotile-bearing rocks) are widely distributed in the coast ranges, Klamath Mountains, and western foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

The functional safety of programmable electronic (PE) mining systems is an international issue and concern. From 1995 to 2001, 11 PE-related mining incidents in the U.S. were reported by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA); 71 PE-related mining incidents were reported in Australia. MSHA does not have regulations for formal evaluations of the functional safety of PE mining systems. Hence, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with MSHA and the industry, generated the NIOSH safety framework for functional safety of PE mining systems. An overview of the NIOSH framework is given; the key framework elements, the safety life cycle and safety integrity levels are detailed. The safety framework approach has impacted the national and Australian mining industries by enabling the industries to advance from an ad-hoc approach to a formalized and systematic functional safety process. In retrospect, valuable lessons were learned for addressing functional safety and for changing industry perspectives and practices. These lessons continue to benefit mining and are applicable to other industries as well.

Energy consumption in domes tic copper production has increased nearly 60 percent in the last 10 years, reaching approximately 175 trillion Btu in 1973. Energy required to produce 1 pound of copper rose from nearly 41,000 Btu in 1963 to nearly 50,000 Btu in 1973. Production from lower grade ores and strict pollution control regulations have contributed to this increase. Each stage of copper production has been analyzed to determine total energy consumed, energy mix required, cost of the energy, and recent or proposed changes in operations which may affect the consumption of energy by the copper industry. Data have been gathered from a recent Bureau of Mines canvass of the industry, from visits to copper operations, and from conversations with copper industry officials.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. "Silicosis is a fibrotic pulmonary disease produced by inhalation of silica-containing dusts (Peters, 1986). Chronic silicosis may develop 20-40 years after initial exposure to crystalline silica, and the disease may progress from a simple to a complicated form. Few symptoms are evident in simple silicosis with pulmonary function being relatively normal. However, chest radiographs reveal small rounded ·opacities in the upper lobes of the lungs. These silicotic nodules consist of collagen arranged in a distinctive circular pattern. As fibrotic changes become more severe, the disease progresses to complicated silicosis (progressive massive fibrosis). Complicated silicosis is associated with shortness of breath and decreases in pulmonary function characteristic ofrestrictive lung disease. Chest x rays reveal numerous large silicotic nodules which may be associated with scar emphysema. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the cellular events which result in silica-induced lung damage and fibrosis (Lapp and Castranova, 1993). They include: ( l) direct cytotoxicity of silica, (2) activation of oxidant and enzyme release from alveolar macrophages, (3) recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and (4) stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis.Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid derived from the Chinese herb Radix Stephania tetrandra. It has a molecular weight of 622.73 and an empirical formula of C38H420 6N2. The chemical structure of tetrandrine has been published previously by our laboratory (Castranova et al., 1991 a). Its structure is characterized by methoxy groups at C7 and C12 , uncharged nitrogens at N2 and N’2 and two 17-carbon ring members connected by a double oxygen bridge between Ca-C7 and C11-C12. Tetrandrine has been shown to reduce both silica-induced fibrosis and the elevation of lung collagen content in rats (Huang et al .. 1981; Yu et al., 1983; ldel, 1987). Furthermore, tetrandrine has been used as an antifibrotic agent in Chinese clinical trials (Li et al.. 1981 ). Preliminary results suggest that administration of tetrandrine to patients with silicosis results in substantial improvement of symptoms, increases in diffusion capacity, and decreases in the size of shadows on lung x rays."

About 100 tests of flammability were carried out with H2, CH4, and CO in mixtures with air using the Federal Bureau of Mines 12-ft-diameter spherical pressure vessel as an explosion test chamber. The LeChatelier approximation gave slightly conservative estimates of the limits of downward flame propagation (onset of significant pressure rise) using the following measured values for the individual gases, in percent: H2, 8.5; CH4, 5.25; CO, 13.0. No justification could be offered for using the LeChatelier law for upward flame propagation limits and indeed reported data suggest that calculated values would not be conservative. The observed upward limit for methane-air mixtures (4.85 pct) was less than the widely accepted lean limit for this fuel; those for lean hydrogen-air mixtures and carbon monoxide-air mixtures did not differ from the lowest accepted values. Diffusional effects on the propagation of single, binary, and ternary fuel mixtures are discussed.

This report presents results from a study whose objective was to evaluate noise control options for existing equipment used in metal and non-metal processing plants. This equipment performs 3 basic functions, crushing, grinding to a point where the product can be liberated from the waste, and agglomeration A the product. Specifically, the study was directed towards taconite processing since the extreme hardness of taconite results in high noise levels and in considerable maintenance of the processing equipment. Both of these factors make this process a very challenging noise control task. Plants processing other ores use similar equipment, consequently the results of these studies should he applicable to a wide variety of plants. The report presents the source diagnosis and potential retrofit noise control treatments for fine screens, mills, crusher sizing screens, and vacuum disc filters. Estimates are make of the noise reduction from each treatment. The report concludes with recommendations for future research on each piece of equipment.
