Arsenic bearing copper-gold ores deposit have been found in most areas of China, especially in southwest. Due to the very closed association between arsenic, copper and gold, conventional flotation and cyanide leaching process may not give positive results. An arsenic bearing copper-gold ore in Sichuan province ,with gold grade of 10.12 g/t, 0.6% Cu and 0.14% As, is characterized by superfine grains with -40 microns fraction accounting for 70.9% and the gold enwrapped mainly by pyrite and tennanite accounts for 34.31%. Arsenic in this ore occurs in isomorphism, deposited in tetrahedrite. The ore was processed primarily in two stage flotation to get copper bearing gold concentrate and pyrite bearing gold concentrate respectively, and sequentially processed by leaching. Under the pressure of 300 KPa and 110~115 ?, the copper-gold concentrate was leached by an oxidizing and catalyzing leach agent then copper and gold were separated from each other in leach solution. The pyrite bearing gold concentrate was processed by cyanide leaching with the leach residue as sulfur product. The test results showed that copper recovery was up to 88.89%, gold recovery up to 89.18% and sulfur recovery up to 92.64%.

China is a country with abundant resources of tungsten, taking one of the world?s top-positions regarding both the total reserve and the amount of industrial production. China?s tungsten resources occur mostly in multi-metallic deposits rather than in single-metallic deposits. China?s multi-metallic tungsten ores have the characteristics of coexistence with other valuable components such as molybdenum, bismuth, copper, sulfur and fluorite. These ores are usually low in grade and difficult to process. The technological challenge in mineral processing lies in separation of multi-metallic components in these complex ores and a comprehensive utilization of natural resource. Several cases of industrial practice of processing China?s typical multi-metallic tungsten ores are presented.

The objective of the paper was application of bacterial leaching on two brown coal samples from locality Mine Druzba, seams Antonin and Josef (Sokolov brown coal basin, Czech republic). Based on the results of bacterial leaching and petrologic analyses of the given samples, it is possible to say that application of bacterial leaching gived good results. Applying bacterial leaching it is possible to remove from 34% to 47% of total sulphur and from 45% to 64% of pyritic sulphur from the coal.

Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.

Because of the extremely low utilization of strain energy in the breakage of solid particles, the energy efficiency prevalent in comminution technology is extremely poor. Schoenert considered that single-particle comminution under slow compression is the most energy-efficient mode of comminution and that energy efficiency should be compared to that. The usual method for grinding minerals and cement has been the ball mill, in which the hit-and-miss aspect of loose-bed comminution severely reduces energy efficiency. The fine grinding of minerals is a particularly energy-intensive process. Schoenert showed that the energy consumed in the comminution of particles in confined beds is second only to that of single-particle comminution under slow compression and developed the method of conducting particle-bed comminution continuously in a high-pressure roll mill. Since its first industrial installation in 1985, the high-pressure roll mill has established itself as the comminution device of choice for significantly improving the productivity and energy efficiency of size reduction from coarse size feeds down to products finer than 20 microns. The first of several hundred installations were in cement plants. The preliminary design and optimization of the industrial operation of high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) systems, owing to the continuous nature of the device, cannot be efficiently done through laboratory experiments and needs to be achieved through proper system modeling. While the energetics of size reduction in high-pressure grinding rolls has been modeled very well, no model exists for the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. In high-pressure roll mill grinding, size reduction results from confined particle-bed comminution under compressive stresses such that the daughter particles produced are highly fractured, stressed, or otherwise weakened. This paper attempts to relate the comminution / compaction behavior for confined particle-bed under compression in a piston-die press with the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. A model describing the pressure-densification relationship is presented and used to accurately simulate the macroscopic variables in high-pressure grinding rolls, utilizing experimental data for particle-bed comminution with the piston-die press. The accuracy of the predictive simulations strongly suggests that, starting with a few batch-mode laboratory-scale experiments, it should be possible not only to identify the optimal operating conditions for existing operations but also to successfully design new industrial high- pressure grinding roll systems.

A citric acid leaching test after heavy medium separation process was performed to remove the heavy metal contaminat such as Pb, Cu, and Zn from contaminated soil. The lead component was removed from soil by heavy medium separation whereas zinc component shows 0 % - 37.9 % removal ratio with particle size. The citric acid leaching was conducted to remove the remained zinc component. The removal ratio of Zn reached to more than 95 % under the conditions; 10 % in pulp density, 200 rpm in agitation speed, 50 °C, 2 mol/L in citric acid concentration at 2 hrs in leaching time. These results suggest that the heavy medium separation method followed by citric acid leaching is effective for treatment of soil contaminated with various chemical forms of heavy metal. LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

The molybdenum ores currently utilized in China are mostly molybdenum sulfide ores whereas oxidized molybdenum ores, being finely disseminated and difficult to process, have not been exploited and utilized effectively. In this article the beneficiation process of a molybdenum ore occurred in an oxidized ore zone was investigated in order to provide a new way for the development and utilization of the oxidized molybdenum ores in China. The molybdenum mineral in the ore was mainly wulfenite and the associated minerals included barite, limonite, quartz and small amount of cerusite. Limonite in the ore occurred in a crust and honeycomb-like colloidal state and composed the framework for the formation of the other minerals in the ore, which filled the pores in the framework. Wulfenite was mainly fine-grained and occurred in the fine porous crust and honeycomb-like framework. The finely disseminated ore structure made the separation and recovery of the molybdenum mineral in the ore very difficult. On the basis of the mineralogical study of the ore, experiments were conducted to compare the various mineral processing methods for the beneficiation of the ore, including single gravity concentration, single magnetic separation, single flotation, and a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration. The results indicated that with single gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 5.85 % Mo with a yield of 11.76 % and a Mo recovery of 43.5 % was produced. With single high intensity magnetic separation it was very hard to obtain a molybdenum concentrate product. With single flotation process a molybdenum concentrate containing 7.06 % Mo with a yield of 15.14 % and a Mo recovery of 62.63 % was produced. With a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 6.46 % Mo with a yield of 11.81 % and a Mo recovery of 42.11 % was produced. In conclusion, compared to the other methods the flotation process can produce more reasonable technological and economical results and is the best process for the exploitation and utilization of the finely disseminated oxidized molybdenum ore.

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Most of the Iron ore washing plants set up in India in the earlier days consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers. In this classical approach, iron values were lost in the form of fines and ultrafine into the tailing ponds as they had little commercial value in those days and accumulated in huge quantities over the years. As the high grade deposits are getting exhausted and the demand for high grade finer material for pellet making is ever increasing, focus is shifting towards recovering the values from the erstwhile tailing ponds by column flotation. This is also supposed to mitigate to a certain extent the environmental problems caused by the ever expanding and unmanageable tailing dams. A case study is presented wherein a composite sample is prepared from samples drawn systematically from multi - locations in a sprawling tailing dam. Laboratory scale column flotation tests on this composite tailings sample, basically originating from two operating iron ore beneficiation plants of JSW Steel Ltd., one of the leading producers of steel in India are found to be encouraging. Desliming followed by reverse and cationic flotation tests using flotation column resulted in the concentrate of 61.88% Fe, 4.81% SiO2, 2.52% Al2O3 and 3.30% loss on ignition (LOI) from the tailings analyzing 57.86% Fe, 7.10% SiO2, 3.52% Al2O3 and 6.14% LOI with 52% weight recovery. The causes for the quality improvement could be attributed to desliming of un-liberated ultra fines of kaoline and hydrated iron oxides and their further reduction by efficient flotation process. The process and the cationic collector developed for this purpose are adopted in the new flotation plant created to treat these tailings. This study covers the tests to develop separation process for production of clay and colemanite rich concentrates, and aims to serve the clay and colemanite concentrates extracted from the tailing dams to the industrial applications. For this purpose, samples from the tailing dams in Kestelek Boron Plant (Turkey) with an average B2O3 content of 8%~11 % were subjected to the investigations. The separation process of hydrocyclone--to make clear the way to obtain either clean clay or cole-manite--was initially discussed. Therefore, following the gentle scrubbing (to keep the bimodal size distribution between clay and colemanite) of the tailings to disperse the slurry, two alternative multistage hydrocyclone processes; allowing to recycling the overflows or underflows to concentrate clay and colemanite were respectively tested. As a result of the preliminary tests, the multistage hydrocyclone separation in direction to the clean colemanite concentrates (recycling the underflows) gave the better separation efficiencies. So, all the parameters such as apex and vortex finder diameters and feeding pressures were examined with the multistage hydrocyclone process allowing the recycling the underflows. The detailed multistage hydrocyclone separation process of the tailing dam wastes yielded with colemanite concentrates (approx. 12 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 35.0 % and the clay concentrates (approx. 42 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 2.1 %. Colemanite concentrates were found good enough either to re-feed in to the separation process or to keep upgrading for final product ready to use in Industry whereas the attempts on production of light bricks from clay concentrates has failed. But it is worth to point out that these clay concentrates can be used for agricultural purposes just in the form as it is.

"The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) is a self-contained, highly instrumented mobile pilot flotation plant developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town and EIMCO, as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. Apart from being a fully operational pilot plant, the FCTR was designed to determine flotation model parameters and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies.The FCTR was installed at WMC’s Kambalda Nickel Operation where circuit modelling, simulation and scale-up test work was performed using the AMIRA P9 flotation model as the basis of the analysis. The model parameters were obtained through metallurgical sampling, batch flotation tests and gas dispersion characterisation around the FCTR. Model parameters were determined for four FCTR circuits, each of increasing complexity. The circuits ranged from a simple rougher-cleaner configuration with no recycle streams, to a more complex rougher-cleaner-recleaner configuration with two recycle streams.Using the P9 modelling methodology, the system was analysed using four mineral species: nickel sulphide, iron sulphide, copper sulphide and non-sulphide gangue. The floatability of each mineral was analysed as two floating species (fast and slow) and a non-floating species. Mass balanced data from all four FCTR circuits were regressed simultaneously together with data from 47 batch flotation tests. Nonlinear regression was used to determine the solution. The model fit was found to be accurate with most data points predicted within experimental standard deviations. A Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis was also performed to establish the stability of the regressed parameters.Using the P9 simulation methodology, simulations of five FCTR circuits (different from the previous four) were performed. The FCTR was also operated in these five circuit configurations to obtain experimental data to validate the simulated predictions. The simulations were found to predict the recovery and grade of nickel sulphide and copper sulphide within experimental standard deviations. The prediction of recovery and grade of iron sulphide and non-sulphide gangue was less accurate. Overall the FCTR simulations predicted the changes in circuit configuration well."

Ca-containing gangue minerals such as Fluorite, Calcite have same surface activity point--calcium ions and approximate floatability with scheelite, it is difficult to achieve good dressing index of rough concentrate of scheelite. Mono-mineral experiments and ore tests indicate that, according to mineral composition, gangue minerals can be inhibited selectively by adopting suitable regulators, then the separation of scheelite from gangue minerals can be realized effectively. Mechanism analysis was taken by zeta potentials measurements and FTIR tests. Good dressing indexes are also obtained in practical ore tests and industrial tests. As a result of recent scientific and experimental studies new technical devices have been developed for monitoring and control the process of grinding. The description of microprocessor module MILLCONT 1 for control of the loading of the mill and microprocessor density control module DENSIMETER is given in the paper. The improved variant of the automatic system for ore grinding control in single-stage ball mill working in close cycle with a classifier with above mentioned technical means is shown in the paper. The loops for measuring and stabilization of the basic technological parameters (density of the ready pulp ? and fineness of grinding of the pulp ß) are described in the paper. The nowadays economic results in ore grinding process automation are given as well.

"Froth flotation has a long history of success for the recovery and concentration of a wide variety of minerals of commercial interest. Both the art and science of flotation have progressed greatly, and as our knowledge has increased so has our ability to improve mineral separations and recoveries.One area of interest in recent years has been the flotation of refractory gold ores to recover the gold-bearing sulfides. In many instances, the use of conventional air flotation to concentrate these values has achieved only limited success. However, as a result of intensive research, Newmont Mining has expanded the boundaries of flotation, and it can now be used to successfully treat many gold-bearing sulfide ores as well as platinum and palladium ores. This has been achieved through the use of the N2TEC technology, which utilizes nitrogen as an inert gas in the flotation process.Laboratory and pilot plant investigations and a commercial plant have proven its worth. Compared to air, the patented N2TEC process has increased the gold recoveries of many ores by 5 to 15 percentage points, and improvements of an even greater magnitude have been observed. This paper describes the process development for the flotation plant now being operated at Newmont’s Lone Tree Mine located in Nevada, as well as development work that was done on ores from their Twin Creeks Mine also located in Nevada."

Low grade oxidized iron ores are usually not economic to utilize. However, the development of SLon magnetic separators and other new technologies make the process cost lower and lower. In this paper, several low-grade oxidized iron ore process flowsheets are introduced. The key procedure is that at the early stage, SLon magnetic separators are applied to discharge as more tails as possible with very low cost, only a small portion of rough concentrate going to the cleaning stage, showing the new technologies are profitable for such iron ores.

"The current sampling systems of ore flows or concentrates are based on the method of cross sections in point sampling and the method of scooping in reducing. The limited number of point samples in sampling and microsamples in reducing lead to big random and probable systematic errors. The paper defines the principles of sampling, which assure the absence of systematic errors and also provides calculation formulas of probable errors in sampling methods of cross and longitudinal sections as well as in samples preparation. The article sets the fundamental laws of sampling: the dependency of minimal mass of gross sample and number of point samples from mass of point sample in sampling from heterogeneous body; the dependency of a sample minimal mass from lumps’ size in preparation of carefully mixed samples; the dependency of point samples’ dispersion from duration of control period. The paper introduces the fundamental notions: lump variance; probable systematic error; methodical error. It also provides a solution of outstanding sample correct application in analysis results calculations. In application of automatic analyzers, mounted in material flows, the probable error connected with sampling, is calculated by the formulas for carefully mixed sampling bodies. The paper describes the developed and introduced sampling systems on the base of combined application of cross and longitudinal sections methods in sampling and preparation of samples. The advantages of this equipment are compactness, reliability, simplicity in service and operation, and for pulps it is adaptability in pipelines. Application of the developed equipment entirely excludes probable systematic error. The new systems of sampling and preparation of samples are introduced at 25 concentrating plants. Introduction of the developed systems at sampling balance points of concentrating plants allowed double reducing balance deficiency."

Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.
