"Coal is a crucial feedstock for South Africa’s unique synfuels and petrochemicals from coal industry and it is used as the main feedstock to produce synthesis gas (CO and H2) via the Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasification process. Detailed coal characteristics are essential to predict gasification behaviour when a specific coal source is to be gasified.The principle aim of this paper is to highlight and discuss those specific coal characteristics, which affect gasification behaviour and stability.In order to determine the suitability of a coal source for gasification purposes, the coal is characterized and the results compared with historical data. Benchmark data, where it was possible to operate the gasifier with ease and relatively high stability, is used as a reference.Coal sources with extreme properties (i.e. low reactivity, ash content <10% as is used by Dakota Gasification Company, or “brown coal” with moisture >30%) can probably be gasified in a Sasol-Lurgi Fixed Bed Dry Bottom gasifier provided that certain operational changes are implemented. Other properties, like high caking and extreme ash content for example, require blending to acceptable levels."

"In excess of 24 x 106 tons (Eskom, 1997) of coal-derived fly ash is produced annually in South Africa for the production of electric power. A large quantity of this ash is disposed of as a solid waste in landfills, thus posing a serious environmental problem. Due to the shortage of landfill sites, new ways of utilising fly ash are needed. Recently several authors have shown that various combustion fly ashes can be converted into zeolites to obtain industrial products with applicability in environmental management. Geopolymerisation has emerged during the last few years as a possible solution to some waste stabilisation and solidification problems. henolic compounds have been shown to be toxic to soil microorganisms at the parts-per-million level. Indeed several of the organic compounds classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants, are phenols. Immobilisation of phenols by adsorption on zeolites and encapsulation in a geopolymer appears to be a promising solution to this problem.This paper reports a technique for the production of a low-silica sodium zeolitic material from fly ash (zeolite NaP1), and its application for the stabilisation of phenols by adsorption and subsequent encapsulation in a geopolymer matrix. A commercial zeolite, clinoptilolite was also utilised as an adsorbent. Due to their uniform pore sizes and large surface areas, zeolitic materials are suitable for ion exchange and adsorption of certain organic substances. Adsorption data show that the commercial zeolite, clinoptilolite was an effective adsorbent for organics. Adsorption data showed that between 51.2 ppm and 74.3 ppm of chlorophenol or between 15.4 ppm and 32.5 ppm of phenol could be adsorbed. Physical encapsulation of the coated zeolite loaded with organic within a geopolymeric matrix increased the compressive strength of the matrix from 28.80 kN to 40.79 kN. Leaching data for the various geopolymer matrices with encapsulated and loaded zeolites show no organics being leached from the system at a detection level of 2ppm. According to the SABS these would have been acceptable organic concentrations within a waste water stream."

"Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 – 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. "Huge electrochemical investigations have been performed on Technical faculty in Bor (Serbia) which main goal was the clarification of the copper sulfide minerals behaviour in hydrometallurgic and flotation processes. Modeling of these processes was a part of the effort for better understanding of the reaction mechanisms.The consideration of electrical analog circuit and mathematical model of processes at interfaces copper sulfide/electrolyte (CuS/(CuSO4+H2SO4), Cu2S/H2SO4 and CuFeS2/H2SO4), based on studies of the overvoltage – time transients, will be presented. The transients were obtained using single pulse galvanostatic method and electrochemical cell with standard three electrode assembly. In that goal it was developed an original system for computer measurements that enables the application of several methods for electrochemical investigations (galvanostatic, potentiostatic, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry etc). The system was tested and adjusted using commercial electrochemical equipment made by AMEL, Milano.In the first stage of consideration the different equivalent electrical circuits have been tested by computer programme OrCAD 9.2 in order to identify the circuit with responses equivalent in shape to experimentally obtained ones. In that way it was established a configuration of an analog electrical circuit for investigated electrochemical system. That phase enabled only very rough determination of values of circuit components and their relative ratio.In the second stage the method for determination of all elements of electrical analog circuit is described. It is based on mathematical consideration of a given circuit on one hand, and valves of the overvoltages at selected times, obtained from charging and discharging parts of galvanostatic transients, on the other."

"Energy balance modeling has recently been shown to be a competent tool in the estimation of SAG mill discharge rheology. Work performed by van Drunick and Moys (2001) validated the ability of an energybalance filter to estimate the slurry density from an operating SAG mill. The importance of rheological data is highlighted by several authors who show the effects on load behaviour and thus mill performance. Energy balance models were developed to account for the dynamic energies in the mill discharge sump. The models then made it possible to infer the mill discharge density. A sampling campaign was performed and the errors from the sump energy balance were within tolerable limits.Since the initial results were published, it has been decided to further develop the modeling techniques in order to focus on balancing the energies around the entire mill. The critical measurements for the energy balance will be the temperatures of all the streams entering and leaving the mill, including energy losses to the environment. Metso’s OCS© (Optimising Control System) currently controls the 3 SAG mills at Anglogold’s Mponeng Gold Plant (South Africa). The OCS has built-in Kalman filtering tools to effectively handle variances and noise in the models and the mill circuit data respectively. The new models are therefore constructed in the OCS platform, and will be run in parallel with Metso’s current modeling and filtering systems. The work is a collaborative effort between Anglogold, the University of the Witwatersrand and Metso. The benefits of energy modeling, compared to mass modeling, are that energy data are more accurately measurable than mass data. The inferred mill parameters can therefore be improved provided that a competent set of models is produced to process the (accurate) thermal measurements."

It is well known that the crushing and grinding steps in the mineral processing of ores represent a substantial proportion of total energy, cost and carbon emission in mining. For instance a recent study calculated that 36% of the energy consumed by gold and copper producing mines in Australia was attributable to comminution (Ballantyne et al, 2012). Understanding this component of a business is essential in a world seeking to lower production costs, improve earnings and reduce its carbon footprint. The issue commands the attention and support of industry leaders in the mining sector, government, equipment manufacture, engineering design and research organizations. Furthermore, several researchers have often stated that globally, comminution processes consume between 3-4% of the world?s electrical energy production (Daniel and Lewis-Gray, 2011). In 2009-10, Australia?s Federal Government Energy Efficiency Opportunity (EEO) participants in the mining sector used 336.5 PJ, representing approximately 6 percent of Australia&apos;s total energy use. It is evident that the current practices of breaking rocks in tumbling mills are relatively inefficient (Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). Research and improved engineering design has established that a range of improved blasting, crushing and grinding techniques and flow sheets may lower project costs and carbon footprint. These include relatively simple process flow sheet strategies such as gangue rejection or pre-concentration prior to size reduction, a better combination of grinding technologies (both current and new systems), and selection of coarser grind sizes where ore and waste mineralogy allow. Yet, despite this systematic and detailed research, the industry remains somewhat reluctant to implement these strategies. CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution) was established in 2011 to support knowledge sharing and change in an area of high-energy consumption for the global mineral industry. CEEC is a not-for-profit industry company, funded by grants from world wide industry companies, whose mission is to accelerate knowledge and technology transfer in the field of energy-efficient comminution. The key benefit to the mining sector arising from CEEC?s activities will be an increase in the rate at which more energy-efficient comminution data sets, processes, and technologies are developed, demonstrated, shared and applied. This will contribute directly to the industry?s target of reducing operating costs and carbon emissions. CEEC International Ltd and JKTech Pty Ltd teamed together to facilitate the inaugural CEEC Workshop, in June 2012. The purpose of the workshop was to produce a roadmap to provide guidelines for how (1) operations can achieve best EEC practice in the short to medium term, in collaboration with vendors, engineering companies and other service providers, and (2) what R&D is needed to achieve paradigm change in EEC in the medium to long term, e.g. 75% reduction in comminution energy in 10 years.

"It is well documented that xanthate adsorption on sulphide minerals is electrochemically controlled process. Under well controlled potential conditions the adsorption of xanthate takes place at different potential on each mineral, hence, each mineral component can be selectively separated from ore. This was demonstrated in the past for single mineral systems. In real flotation this concept never works out for two reasons: the potential of single mineral particle results from its interaction with solution as well as from galvanic contact with other particles present in the flotation pulp. Thus, the potential of a single particle results from complex surface reactions controlled by solution chemistry and the presence of other mineral particles that also interact with the solution. In flotation it is not possible to control mineral particle potential as it was demonstrated in voltametric studies of single mineral.In this study adsorption of xanthate on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite has been investigated in the presence of those minerals. The second mineral was in solution: (i) without any physical contact with the first one, (ii) in direct contact (non-liberated grain or connected by wire), (iii) in collision type contact similar to that observed in real flotation.The adsorption of amyl xanthate on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite was monitored by infrared external reflection technique directly on mineral surfaces. Type of the adsorbed species and their amount were concluded from the recorded reflection spectra. The presence of second mineral in solution without any physical contact does not influence adsorption. The minerals behave as if they were separated (at least during 30 min of the experiment). However, any type of galvanic contact between grains of two different minerals has tremendous consequence on the adsorption of collector on the both minerals. The detected changes are dramatic, from no adsorption to a few monolayer coverage formation.For example, pyrite that adsorbs amyl xanthate strongly in single mineral system in its galvanic contact with galena practically shows no adsorption of the collector in the same solution conditions. On contrary adsorption of xanthate on galena is tremendously enhanced during the galvanic contact with pyrite. The observed changes in the surface reactions are discussed and mechanisms of xanthate interactions in different galvanic contact are proposed."

"The work in the paper introduces a 2-dimensional finite element model for analyzing particular material processing in a roller press. Two basic roller geometries are considered: (a) smooth rolls (used for milling and compaction) and (b) rolls with cavities, commonly used for briquetting. A model is presented that is suitable to analyze material behavior through all stages of the rolling process: feeding zone, nip region, neutral plane and release section. It can predict pressure, shear stress, slip of the material over the roller surface, material velocity field, failure of the compact during release and the course of other important process variables.MODEL, RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSAn associated Gurson model was employed as a constitutive model for the material. The calibration of the model was based on experimental results from an instrumented compaction die. Coulomb friction law was used to describe phenomena on the material/roller surface interface. Powder River Basin sub bituminous coal fines with moisture content 9% was used as a model material.Two finite element models have been set up, one for the briquetting roll and one for the “equivalent” flat roll. Approximately 3200 plain strain continuum elements with reduced integration (CPE4R) were used. Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach in conjunction with judiciously applied remeshing was employed with the commercially-available, dynamic explicit version of ABAQUS finite element code.Comparison of model predictions with experiment shows that there is an agreement in terms of the general trends of experimental values recorded on laboratory roller presses. Gurson model overpredicts stresses at low densities and, as a consequence, overpredicts roll force and roll torque."

"The evaluation of health hazards within the treatment of mineral and waste materials is gaining more and more importance in industrial countries. The need to control occupational safety has been recognised, and regulations which describe general protective measurements for personnel provide a tool to protect their health. It is the aim of the paper to give an outlook for practical approaches to risk assessment and to present measures for exposure reduction in accordance with the state of the art in Germany.Both the treatment of minerals and of waste materials are described in relation to the risk assessment. The method of evaluating health hazards in the two industries is similar and therefore both examples are presented next to each other.The example presented in the paper is the German “Biostoffverordnung” (the regulation for biological materials) which is important for the waste treatment industry. All kinds of waste treatment facilities (like composting facilities, waste dumps, sorting facilities for packaging materials) are obliged to carry out an assessment of health hazards for a variety of working areas and working places. The possible safety requirements deriving from this regulation are presented and discussed under the aspect of biological hazards.All over the world each country has different guidelines and regulations but all have one target in common – to protect the employees. Flinders Power, formerly NRG Flinders, is considering the possible use of low rank coal from Lake Phillipson, South Australia (SA) in its power stations at Port Augusta, SA. Typically, this coal contains about 35% moisture and 10% ash. Unfortunately, it also contains high levels of sodium (1% Na) and chloride (0.95% Cl) with a Na2O level in ash of 18.9%. Such levels cause serious problems during coal combustion, making the use of as-mined coal impractical for power generation. This paper describes the development of an aqueous leaching technique to remove 90% of the sodium and chloride and to yield a product with a Na2 O level in ash of less than 3%. Small-scale agitation leaching tests with good quality tap water at ambient temperatures showed that the coal needed to be crushed to minus 5.6 mm to obtain maximum removal of water-soluble sodium and chloride in 30 min. Leaching kinetics, but not the ultimate removal of salt, were enhanced by the use of higher temperatures (up to 150°C), but this was deemed uneconomic. Varying the pulp density between 20% and 50% had little effect on extractions and there was no benefit in multiple stage water washing. The best results by water leaching were 69%~74% extraction for sodium and 95%~97% for chloride, meaning that the sodium removal was well below the target level. From SEM examinations of the leached product it was concluded that the remaining sodium was organically bound to the carbon atoms in the coal. Further tests using aqueous solutions containing cation exchange additives such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) or ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sulphuric acid (H2SO4) showed that significantly enhanced sodium extractions were possible and target specifications were met. Two options, namely a single-stage and a two-stage leach, were then investigated. In a single-stage leach with additive, minus 5.6 mm coal was leached at 33%~50% solids for 30 min at ambient temperature and then filtered and washed with fresh water. This gave a sodium removal level of about 81% and a Na2O level in ash of about 5%. These levels do not quite meet tar-get specifications. In a two-stage leach, the coal was first leached with water alone without an additive as in the single stage leach, and the washed residue re-leached under similar conditions for about 5 min with an additive (CaCl2), and then filtered and washed. This gave a cumulative sodium removal of 96% and a Na2O level in ash of 1.4%~2.4%. These levels are well within target specifications.

"In water treatment, flocculation or coagulation with aluminium or ferric salts has been widely used for many years to remove natural organic matter (NOM), including humic acids. However, the adsorption of NOM to aluminium hydroxide flocs during conventional coagulation/flocculation processes is very complex, with the flocculation of aluminium hydroxide particles and the adsorption of NOM molecules on flocs occurring simultaneously. Any effect on the surface characteristics and micro-structures of the humic acids and aluminium hydroxides could affect the adsorption efficiency.It has been widely observed that if a reaction system (liquid-liquid or liquid-solid) is exposed to an ultrasound field, under appropriate conditions, a variety of physical (emulsification, aggregation/flocculation) or chemical (the production of radical and exited species; single electrotransfer) actions may be activated. Though the ultrasound effects have been used in biological and chemical decontamination in many conventional environmental protection practices, the idea to explore the ultrasound effects in the removal of humic acids by preformed aluminium hydroxide flocs is relatively new. In this paper, the effect of an in-situ ultrasonication on removal of the humic acids extracted from the acidification fermentation of lignocellulosic residues, by a preformed aluminium hydroxide, was evaluated; the effect of ultrasonication on the surface complexation of the humic acids with the preformed aluminium hydroxides was investigated."

This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. The starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions round the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions.

"The extractive metallurgy of precious metal ores involves gravity concentration, flotation and cyanide leaching. Pre-oxidation, such as roasting, autoclaving, bacterial oxidation and other techniques, is required for processing refractory ores. Selection of the process is mainly driven by the grade, reserve and mineralogy of the target elements. The concentrations of precious metals in the crust are extremely low and highly variable, resulting in ore variability in many gold, silver and PGE deposits. More importantly, precious metals in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic, submicroscopic and surface-bound), making ore processing of precious metals extremely challenging. The objective of geometallurgy and process mineralogy is to reduce and minimize the technical risk in project evaluation, process selection, mine planning and production forecasting through geometallurgical modelling, representative sampling and subsequent systematic mineralogical characterization and metallurgical testwork. Geometallurgy is a technique to document variability within an orebody and quantify and evaluate the impact of many factors including geology and mineralogy on grinding, flotation, leaching and metal recovery processes, while mineralogy is one of the major predictive and trouble-shooting tools for many new mineral projects and operating mines. This paper presents an overview of fundamentals, methodologies and techniques applied in geometallurgy and process mineralogy and highlights the importance of both disciplines in process selection and plant optimization with applicable case studies. INTRODUCTION Precious metals, including gold, silver and platinum group elements (PGE) occur in various geological settings and ore types. The concentrations of these metals in the crust are extremely low and highly variable, resulting in ore variability in many gold, silver and PGE deposits. More importantly, precious metals in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic, submicroscopic and surface-bound), making ore processing of precious metals extremely challenging. Process selection is most important in any precious metals project and is mainly driven by the grade, reserve and mineralogy of the target elements. Free-milling ores, such as Kupol in Russia, Hemlo in Canada, Grasburg in Indonesia, UG-2 in South Africa, Lac des Iles in Canada, and Noril’sk in Russia, can be processed using flotation or cyanidation with or without gravity. B2Gold Corp, a Canadian gold company, just started a number of new and under construction free-milling gold operations such as Fekola mill in Mali, Mastbati mine in Philippins and Otjikoto mine in Nambia. However, refractory ores (particularly gold ores), such as the Carlin and Goldstrike mines in the USA, Giant in Canada, Pueblo Viejo in Dominican Republic, Porgera and Lihire in PNG, Kittilla in Finland, Fairview in South Africa and Shuiyindong in China, must be processed using pre-oxidation prior to cyanide leaching. In some mildly refractory gold ores, such as Kumtor mine in Kyrgyzstan and KCGM in Australia, ultrafine grinding is required to liberate fine-grained gold particles. For some gold ores containing both free-milling and refractory components (such as Cripple Creek mine in Colorado, USA), two or more recovery processes may be required. The variability of grade, metal deportment, ore hardness and other parameters is one of the risks that encountered in development and operation of many precious metals projects. To minimize and reduce the technical risk caused by ore variability, geometallurgy and process mineralogy have been used by mining companies in the last two decades to measure and quantify the spatial variability of the deposits that are being developed. "Flotation is a complex process with many factors that influence the performance of a cell. This paper examines the impact of several key variables on the performance of flotation cells. The study makes use of a simulator for the froth phase of the flotation vessel, as the main purpose of this study is to separate the impact of different variables from one another.In experiments it is very difficult to separate the effect of variables from one another as a change in a singe input parameter, such as air rate, invariably also affects many of the other key variables, such as bubble size and bubble bursting rates. This interaction between variables makes it very hard to experimentally separate the impact of, for instance, the air rate from that of bubble size or bursting rate. In the simulator, though, it easy to make independent changes to these variables.In order to achieve this a base case simulation that is typical of many of the rougher cells found in sulphide flotation circuits was carried out. Four key variables, air rate, incoming bubble size, surface bubble size and the fraction of the bubbles flowing out of the cell unburst, were varied in order to obtain the system’s response.The most significant results were obtained when the bubble size was varied. An increase in the incoming bubble size has the effect of reducing the pulp zone recovery, but increases the froth zone recovery. If it were possible to vary the incoming bubble size without influencing the overflowing bubble size, the impact of the change would be unclear because of these two competing effects. The effect of a change in the overflowing bubble size has an opposite effect on the froth recovery, with larger bubbles resulting in lower froth recoveries."

Tailing slurry is usually abrasive and possesses high viscosity. This paper examines the existing iron ore beneficiation process and focuses on some of the key environmental issues related to the disposal of tailings. It identifies that almost 32% of the iron ore extracted ends up as tailings and they are usually disposed in slurry form in tailing ponds. By the year 2000, 27 Mt of iron ore tailings were generated in India, which has become one of the biggest waste handling problems to the industry. Characteristics of the tailings vary widely. So the physical nature of tailings cannot be considered separately in isolation without considering the mill effluent from the beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, studies were carried out in three iron ore mines in India to evaluate the characteristics of tailings from the beneficiation plant. The tailing samples were collected from different locations during a time period of one year and analyzed. The results will be discussed and the characteristics of the tailings have been evaluated. The disposal system of tailings at the three mines was evaluated. The research on the settling characteristics of tailings indicates that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation tests are essential to design appropriate tailings pond with respect to size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested that an additional unit process, i.e. sedimentation tank be added to the process before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.

A novel process is developed in this study for separation of tungsten and vanadium from a leach solution of tungsten alloy scraps. Specifically, a magnesium salt combined ammonium solution is employed to precipitate vanadium and impurities in the purification of the leach solution. This separates vanadium from tungsten by rejecting tungsten in aqueous solution. Finally, tungsten is recovered as the form of ammonium para-tungstate (APT). Vanadium is recovered as the form of ammonium meta-vanadate(AMV).

A molecular modeling study was carried out on an adsorbed oleate monolayer on the surfaces of three calcium minerals, fluorite, calcite and fluorapatite using Universal Force Field (UFF) potentials. The cleavage plane of calcite {104} was the best template for oleate monolayer adsorbed since the surface structure enabled all the calcium sites available on the surface to be occupied by oleate anions. The area occupied per chain of oleate in this well packed monolayer was computed to be 20.2 Å, which exactly matches the value calculated to be the parking area per oleate molecule for a fully packed monolayer based on strictly geometric calculations. On the other hand, the precentage of calcium sites occupied by oleate to achieve a fully packed monolayer in case of fluroite and and fluorapatite was found to be 67% and 75% respectively. The results of this theoretical study suggest that while all the three adsorption conformations, that is unidentate, bidentate and bridging type are equally likely on fluorite and fluorapatite, bridging is most likely on calcite. Interestingly, all the conformations are observed experimentally for calcite-oleate system also. The reasons for this discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and experimental observations are not clear. More work is required to resolve this discrepancy, in particular simulation studies in presence of solvent water molecules on the surface.

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."
