A recent report commissioned by the South African Chamber of Mines, Mining Vision 2030, identifies the South African mining industry?s negative legacy, its exploitation of people and the environment, as the single biggest hurdle to maximizing the industry?s impact on national development. Industry leaders have identified the need to put the past ?to rest?. With reference to three recent cases involving members of the South African mining industry, this paper points to the continuities between the past and present. It argues that the metaphor of ?multiple crossings? is more generative than the notion of putting the past ?to rest? for purposes of engaging with mining?s negative legacy.

A process for the recovery of copper from the waste oxide copper of a mined-out sulphide orebody is described. Hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from this and similar wastes has been tried several times previously without success. Leaching is carried out by sulphuric acid in columns under conditions that minimise the iron content of the pregnant leach liquor, and copper is then recovered by ion exchange rather than the more conventional solvent extraction. The resin is stripped by spent electrolyte and copper is electrowon. Results are presented for testwork originally carried out in 1993, and repeated in 2006, and the novel aspects of the process, leaching and ion exchange, are discussed. Finally, preliminary order of magnitude capital and operating costs are given, demonstrating that the process is cost effective.

A series of titiania- and silica-supported Au, Pt and Pt-Au catalysts prepared through different synthetic routes have been investigated in terms of their structural properties, adsorption of CO, and catalytic activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by propylene and the oxidation of and CO. Catalysts prepared by incipient wetness impregnation from individual Pt and Au precursors, exhibited characteristics very similar to those of monometallic Pt catalysts. This behavior is consistent with a model in which the two metals remain segregated due to their miscibility gap, and only Pt participates in the adsorption of CO and the reactions under consideration. In contrast, catalysts prepared from a Pt2Au4(C=CtBu)8 organo-bimetallic cluster precursor exhibited different behavior both in terms of CO adsorption and their catalytic activity for the three reactions examined. The combination of the kinetic, spectroscopic and structural characterization data suggests that in this case Pt and Au remain intimately mixed in the form of Pt-Au bimetallic particles, and that the presence of Au modifies the behavior of Pt.

"THE FOLLOWING are some comments on the article, ""International Trade in Minerals and Economic Development"", by M. Sengupta, published in the October 1976 issue of the CIM Bulletin.Sengupta says in the introduction that ""The mechanism through which this growth (economic development) has occurred is basic ally straight forward"". His statement is quite misleading and perhaps it is better to quote Gerald Meier:""Development economists must operate in an imperfect second-best world, away from the simplified premises of neoclassical economics. Their subject matter is therefore not yet a coherent or self-contained discipline. Denied recourse to a set of general principles, perhaps the student's most sensible introduction to economic development is through a study of 'leading issues' that are at the time a major preoccupation of the development economist and development practitioner"" .Sengupta quotes an authority who wrote 18 years ago. Academic and operating development economists today know full well that existing theory is quite deficient. Sociologists, political scientists and engineers in this field also know that economic, social, political and technical development involves all academic disciplines.Sengupta indicates that tariffs in developed countries prevent less developed countries from supplying refined metal, or manufactured and semi-manufactured products. He lists Zambia, Chile and Zaire as examples of copper concentrate exporters, as inadequately shown in Table 1. He is wrong."

Methane drainage and ventilation methods of methane hazard mitigation are used in the coal mines of Kompania Weglowa S.A. Over 22% of methane released during mining activities is captured by methane drainage systems and transported to the surface. In this article we present development plans for utilization of methane captured and transported to the surface by methane drainage systems. The results of research on the possibility of economic utilization of methane concentrated in ventilation air that leaves the mine through fan diffusers are also described.

Bimetallic Au-Pd catalysts supported on amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) with vary amount of alumina (0, 8, 14, 28 and 100%) were prepared by the simultaneous reduction of palladium and gold precursors by ethanol in the presence of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated formation of alloyed Au-Pd particles. Ammonia temperature programmed desorption measurements were performed to monitor the acid strength and the amount of acid sites on the catalysts after their reduction with 10%H2/Ar at 573 K for 1h. The effect of the support acidity on the catalytic activity was investigated in the simultaneous hydrogenation (HYD) of toluene (T) and naphthalene (NP) in the presence of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Coke formation was also determined. Under the selected conditions (P = 5.0 MPa, T = 523 K, WHSV = 41.2 h-1), all the catalysts were resistant to poisoning with 113 ppm of S (as DBT). The hydrogenation activity of toluene and the HDS activity of DBT were found to correlate with the concentration of the medium strength acid sites. The enhancement of the HYD activity and the S- tolerance was related to modifications of the electronic properties of the metal atom upon interaction with the Brönsted acid sites and upon intermetallic interaction.

Technical Sn- bronzes tend to form both macrosegregations and microsegrega¬tions during DC-casting due to the particular thermodynamic properties and kinetics of phase transformation. As a result a heterogeneous cast microstructure forms that is some¬times a reason for a decrease in workability. The extent of macrosegregations in DC-casting can effectively be influenced by casting parameters like casting velocity, primary cooling or inlet geometry which in fact change the relative flow between the melt and the forming solid. In order to understand the influence and interaction of the related phenom¬ena, simulation methods are applied. The solidification of the strand as well as the forma¬tion of macrosegregation are simulated with a two phase volume averaging model. The velocity field of the melt flow is explicitly calculated by solving the corresponding mo¬mentum conservation equations. Within the mushy zone the local formation of microseg¬regations in the presence of feeding flow is estimated. The thermodynamics of the Cu-Sn system is accounted for and it is distinguished explicitly between interface and average concentrations. To investigate the influence of feeding flow on the formation of mac-rosegregations, a study has been performed. Based on this result, the phenomena of mac¬rosegregations are described in a detailed discussion.

What is the future sustainability of the Canadian gold industry? ANSWERS: ?? The gold discovery costs in real terms only increased slightly from 1946 to 2000. ?? Though the Canadian gold industry mined more gold than they discovered in the period, when undeveloped deposits are taken into account, the deficit was merely 12 million ounces. ?? The Canadian gold mining industry would be sustainable in the foreseeable future, particularly, given the overwhelming predicted promising gold market in the mid/long run.

Metal complexes continue to find therapeutic applications for the treatment of a wide variety of human ailments. Amongst these, gold(I) thiolates are used to treat rheutmatoid arthritis but, usually in combination with other treatment or as a last resort. New therapeutic uses of gold, both as gold(I) and gold(III), are being sought, including against cancer, the focus of the present contribution. It will be demonstrated that certain gold(I) complexes show exciting cytotoxicity profiles, rivalling those of cisplatin and standard chemotherapeutic agents. More importantly, anti-tumour activity is demonstrated in vivo, albeit in a mouse model. The presentation will give a brief overview of ?metals in medicine? with a focus on gold and will summarise some recent advances in the development of goldbased anti-tumour agents.

Research and applied utilization activities for the increased use of ferrous and nonferrous slags in construction are presented. The overall use of blast furnace slag is relatively well known for a range of construction applications from aggregates to slag cements. In contrast to blast furnace slag, which is volumetrically stable and straightforward in its construction uses, steel slag contains hydratable oxides that can result in volumetric instability that must be dealt with through appropriate steel slag aging, testing and quality control to ensure its appropriate use. Particular care must be taken to prevent potential steel slag expansive behaviour in confined applications. Quality requirements and guidelines on steel slag expansivity to further the use of steel slags, with demonstrated acceptable performance, are outlined. There is a full range of proven construction uses - from aggregate to cementitious materials - for copper, nickel and phosphorus nonferrous slag. The use of air-cooled nickel slag is presented, based mainly on practical highway construction experience. It has been shown that air-cooled, crushed nickel slag can be an excellent aggregate in granular base, engineered fill and hot-mix asphalt. There is a good potential for increased ground, granulated copper and nickel slags use as supplementary cementitious materials that is being developed, which takes advantage of the 'latent energy' content. The scope of a new technical text in preparation on the technology of slag utilization is reflected throughout to provide a practical context for the engineer.

In recent years semi-solid processing of steel alloys has gain more attention among researchers. Production of high quality complex steel parts with higher mechanical properties is the final goal for all these researches. A thorough understanding of the flow behavior of the metal under investigation is the key for a successful process design. The material used in this research is M2 tool steel. The experiments were performed using a Searl-type concentric cylindrical rheometer which is specially designed for high temperature rheological measurements up to 1500 ºC. The rheological techniques were consisted of continuous cooling experiments and isothermal holding and also shear rate step change experiments for different solid fractions. Based on the rheological data a single phase thixotropic model has been derived and adopted to the measured data. The state of the microstructure has been applied through a structural parameter. The model fits well with the experiments.

MR. R. V. NEILY stated that he had at one time operated at Goldenville. The practice and results are much the same now as in the olden days. Inside plates were then found to be a source of trouble and had been removed. At the Libbey mine, Queen's county, the sulphides carried considerable gold, and $45.00 to $60.00 per ton had been recovered from the concentrates by roasting and chlorinating. Later, concentrates were treated with bromocyanide. Following that practice, a cyanide leaching plant was installed, which did not require concentration of the tailings. Cyanidation brought a recovery of around 95 per cent, with but $300 worth of plant. In Nova Scotia, the ore of each locality presents an individual problem of its own as to treatment required. Ma. W. B. Timm stated that, in the majority of Nova Scotia gold ores, more than 75 per cent of the gold content is free-milling and, naturally, stamps are most efficient for collecting and amalgamating this gold. In Ontario and the West, they had got away from stamps, and perhaps the main reason was that the supply of battery-men, who came from Nova Scotia, had died off. Ball-mills had been installed, which required smaller space and handled large tonnage, even though, as far as amalgamation goes, the stamps were probably more efficient. If concentration is to be done, ore from stamps is usually in better shape for recovery in passing over the tables, as there is no slime. With the ball-mill, flotation is necessary. The better practice, undoubtedly, is to take out what gold is possible before it is all smashed up, as in the ball-mill, though recent developments in the ball-mill make it possible to trap and take coarse gold directly from the mill. In this way, cyanidation is speeded-up, due to saving of the time the coarse gold would take before going into solution. PROFESSOR A. E. FLYNN found it unusual in these days to read anything in favour of the stamp mill, and thanked Mr. Henderson for the excellent paper in which he upholds the stamps and backs his opinion with facts from actual operations. For the typical Nova Scotia ore, containing coarse gold, stamps are un¬excelled. It used to be said that the virtue of stamps is that they brighten the gold for amalgamation. Although this saying is almost classical, it is not true, for gold is never brighter than in the native, untouched state. Any hammering that gold gets makes it more difficult to amalgamate.

The CO oxidation reaction has been studied on Au/TiO2 catalysts prepared by incipient wetness (IW) and deposition-precipitation (DP) methods. Additionally the assessment of activity was also conducted on simple gold compounds (Au2O3 and Au(OH)3) and their physical mixtures with TiO2. We have found that there are three types of CO2 production from fresh catalysts, which are only dried, namely: Non-catalytic Type I (low temperature CO2 production); Non-catalytic Type II (higher temperature CO2 production) and Catalytic Type III. The DP catalysts are far more active for Type III reaction, showing activity already at room temperature, whereas the IW catalysts generally do not show steady state conversion until T>673 K. This is due to both large particle size and the presence of residual chlorine for the latter. No truly catalytic activity was found for low temperature CO oxidation on gold precursors on their own, although both Au2O3 and Au(OH)3 react well with CO even at room temperature in an irreversible manner (Type I reaction). Despite that, catalytic activity was obtained by mixing Au(OH)3 or Au2O3 with TiO2 which gives further emphasis on the importance of a good contact gold/support and the absence of chlorine.

"E. Joe We have been working for some years on the elimination ofCANMET thiosulphates from solutions as a means of protecting ground water and fish streams. Alot of these thiosulphates result from the mill use of S02. Is there any possibility that thiosulphates will be generated by this process?Reply I don't know the answer to your question. I can speculate that there is no question that when one adds SO2 and air to a sulphide pulp one generates a host of unsaturated poly¬cyanates. I unfortunately cannot remember the reactions which arise in the cyanide destruction scheme. I think that if thiosulphate was generated the process wouldn't work. It is not oxidizing enough to destroy the cyanide.R. Wagner Would you comment on the actual cost/ton at the Scottie goldPamour mine concentrator? Would $2.50/ton be typical or is thisPorcupine just a ball park figure.Reply We wouldn't disclose Scottie's costs even if we knew them. I depends on the amount of cyanide and thiocyanate in the effluent. I have given you a hypothetical case. With the conditions stipulated the figures I Have given are realistic.K. Konigsmann I do not believe the use of S02 adds significantly to the thio Noranda Mines salt problem Certainly we use SO2 in many of our mills and thio-salt levels in a number of them haven't changed whether we use or don't use S02. For instance, Orchan and Matagami mills treating the same ore side by side in which one was using S02 and the other wasn't, the thio-salt level was virtually the same in both pulp streams. In the case of Brunswick where alot of SO2 is used (20 tons/day) there is a thio-salt problem but it is relatively insignificant.Reply Thank you for that comment. "IntroductionGravity concentration, the separation of two or more minerals due to the difference in their relative specific gravity and usually in a fluid medium, is the oldest recorded form of mineral processing.The principles of gravity concentration were known to, and practiced by, the ancients and Hoover's commentary to De Re Meta/lied'' notes many early references.Over the centuries, as direct smelting ores became more and more uncommon, the mineral processing industry developed and along with it many varied methods of concentration. Gravity concentration declined rapidly in importance in the early twentieth century, and it is only in the last decade that its advantages are being re-evaluated.A significant proportion of ores are processed by gravity; a large proportion being in the iron and coal industries<'>, or in the treatment at very high volume of relatively coarse alluvial deposits. The tin dredges of South East Asia and Beach sand plants of Australia are prime examples.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. "IntroductionTHIS IS a brief discussion of certain regional and economic aspects of the Coast Range of British Columbia. Between Portland canal and the 60th parallel of latitude, only the eastern margin of the Range is in Canada. The solely British Columbia interval extends from Portland canal to Burrard inlet. Personal observations in various parts of this area form the basis for much of this paper.Regional GeologyGranitic RocksSome of the best, most continuous exposures in the Coast Range are found at sea level. Reconnaissance study of the coastline has shown that the Range is predominantly granitic in character, but there simplicity ends, for the term 'granitic' as applied to the Coast Range covers a variety of mineralogical compositions. Actual granite is quite uncommon, occurring mainly in irregular or dyke-like masses that do not achieve batholithic dimensions. It is commonly pinkish, relatively homogeneous, and exhibits few of the deformational features that are obvious in much of this plutonic complex.Most of the granitic rocks of the Range fall well within the compositional limits of quartz diorite and granodiorite. The problem of resolving the great mass of these rocks into smaller coherent units is in general a difficult one. As noted above, granitic rock of uniform composition and texture is found in restricted areas and can be outlined without much difficulty. One such body occurs on the southern shore of Nelson island."

This paper shall show an economic feasible approach to implement Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry. The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions and therefore directly in correlation with the economic viability. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be defined, mapped and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using available and prospected Best Available Technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified reduction potentials are reported and the GHG emission reductions are put into relation to the investment cost of the new process technologies / process adaption to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap implementation into the company&apos;s business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using ratios between GHG reduction and investment / operating cost to get an indication for a sequence for implementing carbon emission reductions measures.

"The localization of orebodies by geological structures is well demonstrated at the Copper Mountain mine of southwestern British Columbia. These extensive deposits; owned and workd by the Granby Consolidated Mining; Smelting and Power Company; are at Princeton; abo!lt 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International boundary. The geology of the deposits and the surrounding district is described by the present writer in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey of Canada; pub1ished in 1934.The main geological feature is a gabbro stock, elliptical in plan, with a major axis about 5 miles in length extending in a northwest-southeast direction. The stock varies in composition from syeno-gabbro (gabbro plus orthoclase) through diorite and syenite to a core of syenite pegmatite. All the members contain orthoclase, which ·increases greatly in amount toward the centre, but all are devoid of quartz. The stock has been injected into a steeply folded series of volcanic flows, breccias, and tuffs that strike more or less parallel with the major axis of the stock. On its northeast side the stock is flanked by a band of fairly coarse volcanic breccia of andesitic composition and ·having fragments up to several inches in length. Where this breccia is tangential to the stock it is both dynamically and chemically metamorphosed to a marked degree, and within the zone of this metamorphism are enclosed the copper deposit~. The ore consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, and a little magnetite occurring as disseminated grains and small veinlets in the metamorphosed breccias. The only gangue minerals are orthoclase, albite, oligoclase, and biotite. The two most common vein minerals, quartz and pyrite, are conspicuously rare or absent. The dynamic metamorphism has produced two well-defined structures, namely, a strong schistosity parallel with the curved vertical contact of the stock and a very striking set of small, straight, nearly parallel open fractures that stand nearly vertical and at right angles to both the schistosity and the stock contact. These are called the ore fractures."
