"The effect of sulfite and metabisulfite ions on the amyl xanthate flotation of copper-activated pyrite, in distilled water and seawater, has been studied by micro-flotation tests and redox potential measurements. The activation of pyrite was carried out varying copper ions concentration. It was found that in the presence of copper ions in solution, sulfite and metabisulfite are able to depress copper-activated pyrite at neutral or slightly acid pH. After the addition of sulfite or metabisulfite ions the resulting pH is more acidic with metabisulfite ions. A significant increase of the redox potential of the solution was observed as copper ions concentration increased. Then, the initial reducing conditions brought about by sulfite and metabisulfite ions, change abruptly to oxidizing conditions in the presence of copper ions. Under these oxidizing conditions, the metabisulfite showed to be an effective depressant for pyrite mainly in seawater. However, sulfite was a pyrite depressant in both distilled water and seawater. Based on these results, the pyrite depression by sulfoxy-depressants during the flotation of Cu/Mo ores in distilled water and seawater is discussed.INTRODUCTIONDepression of pyrite by sulfoxy-depressants (sulfite and metabisulfite) in the presence of copper ions is an important issue. This is particularly true when pyrite depression in the flotation of Cu/Mo sulfide ores is carried out in seawater. The use of lime in seawater must be avoided because the formation of magnesium hydroxy-complexes and precipitating magnesium hydroxide strongly depresses molybdenite flotation (Castro et al., 2014). In order to solve this problem, one large plant in Chile uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) instead of lime to depress pyrite in seawater. In plant practice, this also improves molybdenite flotation since with the use of MBS the pyrite depression is carried out at pH 6-7, instead the pH 11-12 usually employed with lime.From a general point of view, pyrite exhibits some natural floatability over acidic pH ranges and may be partially floated without thiol collectors (a coating of sulfur/polysulfides has been claimed). Therefore, pyrite flotation with xanthates is usually high in the acidic pH region, but decreases greatly at alkaline pH (Leppinen, 1990; Fornasiero and Ralston, 1992; Zhang et al., 1997)."

"RMR geomechanics classification is being used all over the World as a useful tool for tunnel predesign and construction. Bieniawski (1989) provided guidelines for tunnel excavation and support, according RMR numerical values; guidelines which are now included in almost all tunnelling books, regulations, and Internet portals. But in the last 25 years tunnelling techniques have changed and some of the guidelines have become obsolete.. The conditions of tunnels for the 1989 guidelines application were: horseshoe shape; 10 m width; vertical stress < 25MPa; construction by drilling and blasting. Actually a substantial number of tunnels are mechanically excavated. The tunnel themselves are now bigger: a span of 14 m. is very common for transportation tunnels. The guidelines included the following concepts: excavation method, rock bolts (20 mm diameter, fully grouted), shotcrete, steel sets. There is an increasing gap between the 1989 guidelines and the practice: in many tunnels different to-the-case excavation and support requirements are established. Bieniawski himself has published a paper (Lowson & Bieniawski, 2013) with different guidelines based in Lowson’s practice, with no explanations and/or justification.In this paper a new set of RMR tunnelling guidelines is proposed taking account of the actual industry conditions, and increased safety regulations. The 5 classes’ limit RMR:values (80,60,40,20) are no more useful actually: Values of RMR (70, 50, 30) are used in practice to define quite different tunnelling techniques. Consequently a 10 subclasses system is proposed. Each subclass covers a span of 10 RMR points. As the number of mechanically excavated tunnels has increased a new correction factor is necessary, according the excavation method.The proposed 2014 RMR guidelines are for tunnels 10 to 14 meters wide, the world practice for new roads/railways tunnels. Many tunnels for water/ services are smaller with smaller support needs. Wider than 16 m caverns are out of the RMR system.It is not possible, nor desirable, to propose only a value for support in each subclass. The new guidelines propose an interval of values for certain types of support. More pessimistic values must be chosen for wider tunnels, tunnels with lower RMR values in each class and cases when a higher safety factor is asked for. More optimist ones are chosen for narrower tunnels, and higher RMR values. Some alternatives are almost complementary, others are contradictory. Sometimes several different techniques are proposed Guidelines are not automatic options. Good engineering judgment must be used when choosing between the different alternatives. Guidelines are not mandatory suggestions."

"Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

The presence of an alpha case on titanium parts produced by investment casting is problematic and has to be eliminated. The traditional techniques for the evaluation of its thickness are metallographic measurements and micro-hardness profiles. To obtain a better understanding of how the alpha case is formed with the underlying objective of limiting its depth, the present study proposes to characterize the microstructure and the chemical composition of the alpha case. Electron microprobe analyzer (EMPA) linescans were used to quantify the oxygen and substitutional elements that come from the mould and promote the alpha case formation. The chemical profiles were correlated with metallographic and microhardness measurements. For microstructure, optical microscopy (etched and polarized light analysis) was used. For phase analysis, samples were mechanically polished step by step and analysed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Furthermore, surface analysis techniques such as XPS and Auger Microscopy were evaluated but results were found to be inconclusive because the formation of the oxide layer was faster than its ablation and the matrix could thus not be analysed. The alpha case was observed on a Ti-6Al-4V step block casting.

"IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. is a IO 500 tid base metal producer. Development is carried out by Jarvis Clark MJM-21 3-boom development jumbos, using Tamrock E400, 410 and 550 pneumatic drills. Typical drift size is 13 ft by 18 ft with a 12-ft advance per round. Blast holes are 1 ½ in. in diameter while reamed holes are 3 in. in diameter. AN/FO is the principal blasting agent, being loaded by C-I-L model60R intermediate loader. The detonators are NONELS and DETINELS. Sulphide dust explosions occur during blasting when dusts from certain minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite are ignited by name from the detonating shots. The result is a secondary unwanted explosion with a characteristic shock wave and name front that are very destructive to mine services such as ventilation ducting, electrical cable, and ventilation control doors.A typical reaction in the Brunswick orebody occurs according to the chemical formula:4FeS 2 + IIOs-2Fe2O3 + 8SO2 + 3458--(Enright , 1988)The hematite (FeO3) is deposited as a red dust in the blast area while the toxic sulphur dioxide gas (S00 contaminates the underground workings . The presence of S02 gas disrupts production until it is purged from the area by the mine ventilation system or dissipates slowly in those areas where the vent ducting has been melted by the name front or torn down by the shock wave.Sulphide dust explosions exact a high economic toll. Direct costs in damaged materials and wages are probably exceeded by the value of lost production and disruption to the mining cycle. In addition, the health and safety concerns associated with sulphide dust explosions cannot be ignored."

"This paper begins by describing the parameters of high-speed underground tracked drifting operations and the mucking cycle, and-discusses their variations. The railbound Haggloader 8HR is then described, as well as the Hagglund shuttle trains, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of the system. A comparison with conventional mucking operations is then given.IntroductionDrift and tunnel rounds are mucked by one of two major methods, either trackless with diesel loaders and trucks or with track loaders and cars. The aim of this paper is to compare the conventional tracked mucking cycle with the Hagglunds system alternatives.For many years, the traditional method of attacking the mucking cycle has been with a rocker shovel loader, a string of cars and a locomotive. The rocker shovel loads the first car and when full it is taken to a side drift, cherry picker or some other transfer point and is exchanged for an empty one. This empty car is then pushed back into the face and the loading continues until all cars are full . Then the whole train is taken out to a dump point where the cars are emptied. Normally the train&apos;s capacity is less than the volume of the muckpile, so the cars go back to the face. This loading cycle is repeated until all muck is removed from the heading. The last train out from the heading usually takes the loader and parks it in a side drift before continuing on to the dump where the cars are emptied.This simplified version of the traditional loading cycle excludes the ancillary work elements such as track laying and so on, but does point out that the cars must be transferred when full and that the whole train normally makes at least two round trips from the dump to the face. The prime aim in drifting is to cycle a round whithin a working shift which necessitates that no one part absorbs so much time as to prevent the completion of the cycle.Mucking, drilling and loading and the ancillary work such as rock bolting, vent and service pipe hanging typically each take one-third of the available work time. Drilling or mucking can and often do, because of various factors, take nearly half of the total cycle time. Once any segment of the operation starts to take this portion of the shift, the likelihood of missed rounds becomes increasingly greater."

"The Phalen Colliery, the Cape Breton Development Corporation&apos;s flagship, is now producing thermal and metallurgical grade coal in Eastern Canada&apos;s Sydney Coal Field. The colliery is a drift mine operating under the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Improved mechanization, including a 2200 tonne per hour cable conveyor, and the introduction of modern retreat longwall mining methods as part of the Phalen concept are now paying off in better productivity and low operating costs. Geological conditions within the coal field are consistent with plans for ever greater outputs in the 1990s. Although much of the current production improvement is related to uprated machine capacity and simplified mines planning there is potential for even further development in the areas of maintenance, process control and engineering. Human resource development will also be a key factor. These programs are now well under way and Phalen Colliery is poised for top results in the 1990s. Comparison of the CBDC&apos;s top producer with similar operations elsewhere in the world, quantifies that potential.IntroductionAn exciting new mining project which has recently started production on Canada&apos;s East Coast has been conceived and designed to be one of the most modern and productive coal mining operations in North America.As with all mining operations, the business is basically that of material transportation. Daily, the product is transported many kilometres from the underground face to the surface and then to washing facilities. Men, materials and equipment are transported to and from the surface and the operating faces and services, such as electrical power, ventilating air, fresh water, discharge water, communications and compressed air are supplied throughout the operation to cover operating requirements. On all accounts the operation has been designed to take advantage of the latest proven technology."

"The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

Electrode Columns are commonly used in electric furnaces to deliver current and regulate furnace power to the smelting or melting process. Hatch has developed an innovative patent-pending system for lowering ("slipping") and/or raising ("back-slipping") the electrodes through an electrode column, without requiring the release of any clamping devices. All clamping forces are applied by springs. Unlike systems employing hydraulically applied clamping forces, (e.g., water bladders) the spring system is failsafe. Its inherent simplicity virtually eliminates the need for maintenance. The Hatch system is particularly applicable to Soderberg electrodes, and comprises two axially movable slipping clamps and a stationary power clamp, each of which apply a distributed, radial clamping force to the electrode. The magnitudes of the slipping sleeves&apos; clamping forces and sequencing of their axial movements are selected such that the slipping clamps, in conjunction with the weight of the electrode, provide slipping or back slipping without release of any clamping force.

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

"The historical transformations in fire -resistant conveyor belt compositions in the past 20 years have been influenced by factors of material cost, changing flame and burn test requirements, material replacements, adhesion and oil resistance considerations, increased responsibility and legal liability. Specifically, this has resulted in a swing from neoprene-cotton belts to S.B.R. blends and synthetic fibre carcasses, and tighter quality control and documentation of test data.Flame dynamics are discussed and the function and performance of the multiple types of flame-resistant additives in the flame front are presented. Specific flame and burn test requirements are described. The belt manufacturers&apos; requirements and criteria in selecting the types of flame-resistant additives are presented.The author will describe the composition of the types of flame-resistant compounds used in a practical production, the belts that are available on today&apos;s mark et and future developments in requirements that may further transform the composition of fire-resistant belts.IntroductionThe historical transformations of conveyor belt compositions in the past two decades have been based on factors common to those leading to changes in man y organic compositional products. These factors are material cost, new materials, the customer&apos; s changing requirements, government regulation s and increased manufacturer&apos; s liability.As a basis for understanding the product, I will provide a brief breakdown of the conveyor belt composite. Figure 1 represents a cross section of a typical belt. A skim rubber coats each fabric ply of the belt carcass and is of a different rubber composition than the outside layer of rubber which forms the cover. This outside cover layer is designed to protect the belt from environmental factors such as heat, oil and abrasion, and other factors involved in the service condition s under which the belt will operate. In the case of fire-retardant belt s, both the skim coat encapsulating the fabric plies and the outer cover must contain sufficient fire retardancy to overcome the contribution to burning of the decomosition products of the fabric."

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

"Cable TV networks are extensively used throughout Canada for TV signal distribution. Mobile/portable radio communications are also used extensively throughout all sectors of industry. There are numerous manufacturer supplying these industries with a wide variety of equipment and accessories.IAL&apos;s underground radio communications system combines the techniques of cable TV and mobile radio to produce a flexible communications system with most of the advantages of both systems. Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. The system can be interfaced to a telephone system, if required, to provide extended communications to above-ground workshops, offices, medical stations or even hospitals and other emergency services.IntroductionReliable communications among personnel throughout an underground mine area have long been the dream and goal of various mine operations personnel. The system to be described was designed to meet this objective."

"The use of liquid copper as a medium for zinc extraction has been used in the Warner Process as a method of processing zinc-lead sulphide ore. The recovery of zinc metal is based on the reaction:ZnS(s) + 2Cu(l) = Zn(g) + Cu2S(l)In this method, thermodynamic and phase equilibria investigations of the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems are of importance and form the basis for the liquid sulphide phase which appears as a product and is used as a solvent in the Warner Process. Phase relations in the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary systems were determined experimentally at 1473°K to provide a fundamental basis for the new zinc smelting process. The results show that the solid solubility of ZnS in the two systems is very small (2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in FeS, 4 wt% ZnS in Cu2S for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; less than 0.5 wt% ZnS in both PbS and Cu2S for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). The Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS in the liquid mixtures and the vapour pressure of zinc over the matte in both systems is relatively large (?° = 7.7 – 15.8, Pzn(atm) = 0.088 – 1.026 for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; ?° = 8.9 – 12.9, PZn(atm) = 0.075 – 0.214 for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). On the FeS-ZnS join, the only phases detected are FeS and iron-rich sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S. The binary join mixture occurs at about 92 wt% FeS-8 wt% ZnS at 1473°K. Electron microprobe examination of the quenched samples indicate about 47 wt% to 48 wt% FeS in sphalerite and about 2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in the iron sulphide phase. On the Cu2S-ZnS join, microprobe analysis reveals that the maximum solubility is 4 wt% Zn in liquid Cu2S and 3.6 wt% Cu in solid ZnS. In the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary system, microprobe analysis of the quenched samples indicate on average, 5 wt% ZnS in the liquid phase region. The only phases detected on the PbS- ZnS join are ZnS and PbS. The eutectic phase contains, on average, 13 wt% ZnS. The phase relationships, very low solid solubilities of zinc sulphide in the liquid mixtures of both Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems, coupled with the high Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS as well as the high vapour pressure of zinc over matte all favour the partitioning of zinc metal into the vapour phase. This new process is cost effective and bypassesthe expensive and tedious conventionaltechnique of zinc production involving oxidationof the sulphide ore by roasting followed bya reduction process to extract the zinc. Theresults indicate that a new zinc smelting technologyusing the Warner Process would bemore efficient and preferable over the traditionalmethods of zinc extraction."

"Tumbler Ridge, Canada&apos;s newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town&apos;s ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

"An interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile has been developed for modelling oil sands mining operations. The model is to be used in conj unction with models of other oil sands mining equipment, such as bucket-wheel excavators and reclaimers, conveyors, hoppers, bins, trucks and shovels, to study mining operations on a minute-by-minute basis. From the orebody description and mining selectivity, layers of ore and reject are determined and mined by the dragline. Reject is dumped on the pit floor; ore is either dumped on a windrow for later removal by a bucket-wheel reclaimer or directly dumped into a hopper feeding a conveyor. The model allows for the presence of pads as a dragline base, key cuts and a number of interruptions to the mining operation such as shift changes, boom checks, engineering services, repairs, delays, preventative maintenance, etc. A CRT display keeps the model operator informed about equipment status and performance. The model operator can direct the course of the simulation by issuing commands to the model at any time during the simulation.IntroductionThis paper describes an interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile. The model was designed by the author based on information and specifications provided by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. The model design was implemented and tested on Petro-Canda&apos;s IBM computer system by DMR and Associates Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta.The model was designed to form three components of an oil sands mining operations model, described in reference I. Figure 1 shows the interaction of those components with the remainder of the oil sands mining model.An ""Ore/Waste Body"" data base provides information to the dragline model about the location and composition of or e and waste in the mine. The dragline model is used to simulate mining this ore/waste body, to build up spoil piles for center reject (waste) and to dump ore onto windrows or hoppers (situated over conveyors) to deliver the ore to the extraction plant. The windrow model component provides a data base which will be used by a model of a bucket-wheel reclaimer which simulates the loading of ore from the windrow on to a conveyor via a bridge."

"Cambior now holds a 49% interest in the Valdez Creek Placer, having acquired American Barrick&apos;s 23.125% interest in May 1990. At the same time, the company assumed the management of the operation and received environmental permits to divert the river. Plans are underway to divert the Valdez River in order to continue mining the deposit upstream, and to construct a new, higher capacity wash plant (by 60%) closer to the operations. Mining operations, which were suspended in October 1989 pending higher gold prices, resumed in August 1990. The mine is expected to produce 10000 ounces of gold in 1990and more than 80 000 ounces in 1991.IntroductionThe Valdez Creek Placer is located in the Valdez Creek mining district of Alaska on the western flank of the Clearwater mountain range, about 150 miles northeast of Anchorage by air (Fig. I) . The mine is accessible by air or by road.The mine is situated at an elevation of about 3000 ft and is isolated from towns and villages. Consequently, the mine site contains the facilities necessary to house and feed 135 people at any given time. The Valdez Creek Placer has 159 employees, including 130hourly and 29 salaried employees. The hourly employees are divided into three rotating teams. The daily schedule consists of two shifts of 12 hours, and each team works 14 days followed by seven days off, resulting in a weekly rotation of teams.The salaried employees work normal hours for ten consecutive days followed by four days off. A weekly rotation ensures continuity of services and management.Gold was first discovered at Valdez Creek in 1903, when a team of four men led by Peter Monahan left the village of Valdez to explore the area up the Susitna River, to the east of Mount McKinley. They discovered gold at the mouth of a creek that they immediately named Valdez Creek, in honour of their native town. In 1904, they discovered the Tammany Channel to the right of Valdez Creek. This was the beginning of a long period of mining in the area which continued until the beginning of World War II .In 1980, the Denali Mining Co. was formed. Geophysical work and drilling carried out through 1980 and 1981 led to the discovery of Channel A, a second channel which is older than the Tammany Channel. In 1983, Denali Mining optioned its claims to Camindex to explore, develop and mine the Valdez Creek property. A joint venture agreement was signed among Camindex, Talcorp, BCP Alaska (Barrick), Sum Resources (Cambior), Norfran and WGM to form Valdez Creek Mining Co., Inc., and production began in 1984. Valdez Creek Mining Co., Inc. (VCMC) was subsequently restructured and in 1989 was held by the following three companies: Camindex Mines Ltd. - 51070; Cambior Inc. - 25.875%; and American Barrick - 23.125%.VCMC is managed by a committee of the partners. Decisions made by the committee are subject to a 70% majority vote. Cambior receives its share of production in kind, and contributes in the same proportion to the expenses of the joint venture (VCMC)."
