The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. "Managing safety on the basis of after-the-fact reaction to accidents, can never be more than partially successful. Injuries will occur as long as the underlying potential for them still exists. Unless unsafe actions and conditions are systematically decreased, no program can have more than a short-term success.The pro-active Bullmoose loss control process, instead, focusses on heightening awareness of work habits, to prevent incidents by reducing their potential.Any safety program will be doomed to failure if the development of safe work habits depends on the safety supervisor or a safety committee. At Bullmoose the focus is on the critical actions out of which losses emerge. The successful application of performance-related feedback is achieved by taking safety, health, and environmental concerns into consideration on every level, and, by doing the right thing in every job done.What is an Exceptional Loss Control Program?If an accident in an organization creates a flurry of interest, resulting in ""cracking down"" on violations for a short period of time then an ""exceptional"" loss control program exists. Unfortunately, exceptional here does not refer to the effectiveness of quality of the program but to the fact that the organization is managing loss control by exception. The degree of management attention in an ""exceptional"" safety program varies over a period of time, remaining low as long as the rate of losses stays within management's acceptable control limit (Fig. I). When the losses rise above this, management becomes motivated to begin ""exceptional"" efforts to manage losses. When the rate falls again to within the accepted limit, efforts to control losses take a back seat.Such a strategy guarantees that losses will be tolerated or ignored as long as the actual rate is below the acceptable limit. Simply to lower the limit would not reduce losses, but would result in an increased number of flurries of management attention to loss control. This ""on-again, off-again"" style of management teaches supervisors and others that basic loss control is not as important as are statistics."

"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold’s autoclaves / CIL facility at Goldstrike, blanking the preg robbing native carbon in the process solids with hard (m.p. 55 - 60 º C) paraffin wax was studied, specifically in relation to pressure oxidation. The improvement in CIL gold extraction was found to depend on the wax addition point, with hot, dry contacting of the ore in the presence of wax - prior to POX - yielding the largest, most consistent improvement in gold extraction.INTRODUCTIONDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including Carlin Trend, NV, deposits, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (Thomas, 1994). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers to the actual gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the pressure oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This is taken advantage of on a large scale by gold millers, who use manmade activated, i.e., graphitized carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold cyanide bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold. The second barrier becomes problematic when the ore naturally contains graphitic orcarbonaceous material, hereafter referred to as native carbon (versus the man-made activated carbon). This material may also adsorb gold cyanide in competition with the activated carbon. Since the native carbon is ground with the ore it is much smaller than the activated carbon. Any competition between the two carbons may produce a loss of gold from the pregnant leach liquor to the process tailings. This phenomenon is called “preg robbing”. Goldstrike ores come from the Carlin trend, which is known for the occurrence of native carbon (Adams & Burger, 1998; Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001; Tretbar, 2004)."

Since the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gap (1). Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Franc;ois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the King of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors: - the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region; - the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry; - the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, md1spensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace; - the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery.

Commercial tellurium commonly contains heavy basemetal impurities such as lead, copper, iron, etc., as well as selenium and oxygen. The base metals may be removed by vacuum distillation or by zone melting. Vacuum distillation is a convenient method for treating moderate quantities (~ 100 kg.) for the production of a material having a total content of heavy metals in the 10-30 ppm range. By zone melting, it is possible to lower all the heavy metal impurities tm below the limits of spectrographie detection. Neither vacuum distillation nor zone melting is effective for the removal of selenium, but treatment of molten tellurium with hydrogen converts selenium to hydrogen selenide. This procedure is too s low to be considered except as an adjunct to zone melting. In the course of air-melting, many of the more easily oxidized impurities form a dross and may thus be readily removed. Substantial refinement with respect to iron, tin, chromium, aluminum, sodium, silicon, magnesium, calcium and manganese can be achieved in this way. Although tellurium can be electrodeposited from either acid or alkaline solutions of the dioxide, various factors militate against successful electro-refining, amongst which may be mentioned the brittleness of cast tellurium anodes and the tendency for the metal to be deposited in dendritic form, even at low current densities.

"The Bernie Lake pegmatite near Lac Du Bonnet in southern Manitoba is a complexly zoned pegmatite containing several lithium-bearing units in addition to the western world's largest known reserve of cesium. The pegmatite forms a flat-lying ellipsoidal body within an east-west-trending Precambrian amphibolite. The pegmatite enclosed by this vertically schistose amphibolite lies near the eastern tip of a granitic intrusive. The relationship of this intrusive to the pegmatite is obscured by Bernie lake. To date, the pegmatite body has been delineated aver an area of approximately 80 acres; it attains a maximum thickness of 280 feet. Several distinct zones, including three assemblages of economic importance, comprise the pegmatite itself. The combined spodumene and lepidolite assemblages provide a recoverable defined lithium ore reserve of almost 5 million tons averaging more than 2 per cent lithium oxide. The recoverable cesium ore of the pollucite assemblage provides 300,000 tons averaging more than 20 per cent cesium oxide; this represents more than half of the western world's pollucite reserve. The Bernie Lake pegmatite deposit, owned by Chemalloy Minerals Limited, is well located with respect to the growing United States markets, and its reserves of cesium are large enough to enable it, under favourable economic circumstances, to become the major producer of this metal in North America."

"Mine hoist brakes must meet the following statutory performance criteria:- There should be two independent braking systems; at least one should act directly on the hoist drum.-If one brake fail s, the others should be able to retard and stop the hoist safely before the descending conveyance, carrying the rated load, reaches any obstruction.- When all brakes apply, decelerations should not be so violent that men travelling in the conveyance are injured.- The brakes shall not overheat and fade during an emergency stop.This paper discusses design principles and capacities of caliper and disc type brakes, when applied to double drum and friction hoists of equivalent capacity.IntroductionThis paper is about the brakes that are used on mine hoists; their functions, especially in emergencies, typical design, and how they are operated, controlled, tested, and adjusted.There are two basic types of mine hoists:1. Drum hoists, where the ropes are attached to, and coil on drums. The simplest system has only one drum. Most such hoists, however, have two drums, attached to a common shaft. Ropes are wound on each drum in opposite directions, so that when one conveyance is being raised, the other is lowered. The conveynaces may travel in vertical or inclined shafts. In the latter case, the hoist s are referred to as slope hoists.2. "A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

The orebodies of the Giant Yellow-knife mine occur in zones of schist, in an assemblage of typical Precambrian greenstones which form part of the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. One of the most interesting problems at the mine concerns the fold-like attitudes assumed by the schist zones. The internal structure of the zones and orebodies provides much evidence of folding. A logical conclusion would be that the zones represent a single horizon which has been folded and drag-folded in the ordinary course of mountain building. However, surface mapping, and correlation of certain marker horizons, in underground work, indicate a homo-clinal succession of steeply dipping flows. If this concept of the geology is correct, the zones must cross-cut the regional strike at a small angle and, in the over-all aspect, the regional dip at a large angle. A mechanical interpretation of the zone structure is presented as a suggestion for the present until new evidence is found.

"Following the acquisition of grinding- circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all ""best-fit"" criterion. A search is conducted with the minimum set of water masses and narrow size ranges of solids around the circuit (called search variables), which permit the computation of any of the measured data points. Search variables are used to calculate measured values for an objective function of the form: [ ] where W, is a weighting factor•, M1 is a measured value and M. is a corresponding . value calculated from search vanables. The best values of M, are those which minimize R. The above method is compared with others that have been utilized for mass balancing circuits."

A research project was conducted at the University of British Columbia (UBC) resulting in the development and evaluation of a novel comminution circuit incorporating autogenous grinding and parallel trains of cone crushers and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). A primary driver for the circuit was to treat ore from deposits with clay and variable hardness. This paper summarizes the unique pilot-plant test program that was developed as a basis for experimental simulation and lists the main findings of the research, including the circuit?s potential operational cost savings compared to a conventional SAG circuit.

"The 1994 Quebec Budget included a significant overhaul of the mining duties sys-tem in that province: broadening the base and lowering the rate, all in the name of “ensuring the integrity of the taxation system"" and ""enabling the State to collect fair compensation "". The reforms hit hardest on the small, lightly-capitalized producer, by repealing the basic annual exemption, limiting the refund for losses, and significantly reducing the investment and processing allowances. There is some relief provided in the form of faster depreciation rates and a lower nominal tax rate, but the thrust of the overhaul is clear -higher taxes on the mining sector.IntroductionAlthough Quebec's mining tax regime represents under 10J0 of the province's revenue base, and was significantly reformed in 1979 and 1985, the May 13, 1994, provincial budget introduced further significant changes to the Mining Duties Act, The hope (on the part of the province) is to reduce the provincial ""subsidy"" for mining by $20 mil· lion per year by 1996."

At The Steel Company of Canada, Limited, iron oxide dust from the basic oxygen open hearths is being collected by means of electrostatic precipitators. The utilization of this dust, which has been hampered by the presence of zinc and lead oxides and sulphur compounds, is made possible by direct reduction in a rotary kiln. The description of the dust collection system and the results of kiln tests are presented.

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

"The air classification of moist bulk materials is addressed in the literature insufficiently. Therefore a feasibility study investigated the influence of feed moisture on the separation efficiency expecting a reduction with higher moisture content in the feed. Two iron ore samples were characterized in terms of the nature of bonding of moisture as well as its effect on the agglomerate strength. The classification tests themselves were conducted with two dynamic laboratory air classifiers at cut sizes from 45 to 110 µm and a moisture of the feed material between 0 to 10 wt.-%. The quality of classification was assessed by split factor, cut size, separation efficiency, moisture of both products, as well as the yield of the fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. An initial approach was found for a technological implementation: A sufficient drying of a moist feed can be realized simultaneously to the pneumatic transport inside the classifiers. In the present case the drying effect and dispersion intensity was sufficient to provide good separation results up to 3 wt.-% feed moisture. An additional drying step was necessary beyond 3 wt.-%.INTRODUCTIONSpecific information about the influence of moisture in air classifiers is very rare. Mostly only dry products are processed and/or drying prior to classification is recommended. Apart from the specific influence of the feed moisture a lot of literature can be found regarding air classification itself. Altogether air classification can be divided into several sub-process (Leschonski, 1977):- dosage of the feed material,- dispersing the solid feed material into a gas stream,- feeding the dispersed material into the classification zone by pneumatic conveying,- separation of coarse and fine particles, and- separation of fine particles from gas.For wet feed particles also drying plays an important role. Interesting for the present investigation are the humidity of the feed and its influence on the single sub-processes."

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. Gekko détient la licence exclusive pour la résine AuRIX®100 produite par Purolite, et la colonne G-REX a été spécifiquement conçue pour cette résine. "This paper refers to a new process for the full recovery (above 98%) of zinc and other valuable metals (Pb, Ag, Au) accompanying zinc in its concentrates while iron is separated as a marketable product free of any harmful impurities and suitable for sale to the cement industry. The process has been especially designed to achieve the following goals: maximizing the recovery of zinc and those valuable metals that are present in most zinc concentrates (lead, silver, gold); allowing the recovery of other valuable metals such as indium or germanium that could be present in some zinc concentrates; avoiding or minimizing the need for residue disposal in safe areas as it is the common practice nowadays in the zinc industry. Finally, the process achieves the previously related goals at a competitive cost, in line with the existing more efficient operations while using conventional equipment working under atmospheric conditions. The new process can be easily implemented in those smelters using the jarosite or goethite processes as well as in those smelters using direct leaching as a part of the processing facilities. A study has already been conducted on the use of jarosite in the cement manufacturing process, in the raw mix preparation as well as for a set controller. It shows that use of clean jarosite in the manufacture of ordinary Portland cement can result in improved quality of the clinker. Jarosite showed compatibility to influence the burning characteristics of the cement raw mixes. The presence of SO3 bearing mineral phases such as natrojarosite showed the suitability of clean jarosite for use as a set controller in cement production.INTRODUCTION Iron is by far the most abundant impurity accompanying zinc in its concentrates, and consequently, iron residue disposal is a major environmental concern for many zinc smelters in the world. This is especially true during the last 30 years when environmental restrictions became more and more strict. Much research work has been carried out during the last 30 years to try to find a solution for this important issue, but with little success. Only the jarofix process represents a partial solution to this problem as jarofix is stored nearby the smelters with certain limitations as a non-contaminant residue. However, it does not avoid the need to dispose of an important amount of residues every year, representing an environmental liability. Meanwhile, the number of countries limiting or banning the disposal of iron residues generated by the zinc smelters is growing, so that the solution to this problem is becoming an urgent matter right now. At the same time, the lack of appropriate available land for iron disposal is also a major concern in many cases."

The study on the material properties of frozen soils in China was being developed quickly in the past decades of years, because of the increase of the engineering constructed in frozen soil regions on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, and numerous research results were achieved mainly about strength and deformation behaviour and constitutive models of frozen soils. Studies have shown that the deformation procedure of frozen soils is irreversible; therefore, it is more appropriate to research mechanical properties of frozen soils by means of damage mechanics theory. In this paper, an elasto-viscoplastic anisotropic damage model is presented by introduction of Perzyna viscoplastic equation into analyzing the deformation of frozen soil. In addition, an anisotropic damage evolution equation is obtained by means of extending non-viscous damage to viscous damage. Triaxial tests at different strain rates are chosen to illustrate the application of this model, and good agreement between experimental data and numerically simulated results is obtained. The calculated results indicate that, under the same conditions, the damage at higher strain rate is less than that at low one. So the phenomena are explained from damage mechanics that the frozen soil has larger elastic modulus and shear strength at higher strain rates, and explained from mechanism that the emergence and development of micro-cracks in the body of frozen soil can be to some extent retarded at higher strain rates.

The correct application of large crater blasts in unfrozen tar sand is an effective means of resisting frost penetration during winter. This results in much higher productivity and considerably less down time with excavators during winter operations. The resulting flatter angle of repose of the highwall has readily been accommodated with slight modification to bucket-wheel excavator operating procedure. Other mining schemes call for large draglines to be located on top of the highwall, which can be as high as J80 feet. The question now arises as to the effect that blasting might have on the stability of such a situation in which the highwall includes potential planes of weakness. This paper applies blast vibration data from large-scale blasting in tar sand to the stability analysis for typical production situations likely to be encountered and indicates safe scaled distances to be employed between dragline and blast.
