"Introduction to the Syncrude OperationSyncrude Canada Ltd., located 42 km north of the city of Fort McMurray, Alberta, (Fig. I) is an integrated operation that has produced synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca oil sand deposit since 1978.The operation, consisting of a surface mine, an extraction plant, a bitumen upgrader, and a utilities plant, is currently capable of producing over 60 million barrels of crude oil per year. Production is expected to increase to 70 million barrels of crude oil per year over the next five-year period with no major changes to equipment or process planned.The Syncrude surface mine, producing a total of 675 000 tonnes of ore and waste per day, rates as one of the largest mines in the world. A strip mining method is utilized, with two or three operating benches necessary to excavate a total depth varying between 60 m and 70 m. The 20 m to 30 m of overburden is removed by electric and hydraulic shovels and 200-ton haul trucks, and dumped in the mined-out pit for final storage. The overburden operation creates a flat bench near the top of the ore zone on which the four 60 m3 draglines operate. The draglines excavate interbanded ore and waste in the highwall, with ore placed on the operating bench in windrows, and waste returned to the mined-out pit. The windrowed ore is reclaimed by four bucketwheel reclaimers, and discharged onto a conveyor system for transfer to the extraction plant."

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

"The Kidd Creek copper smelter started operation in June 1981 using the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process. A steady increase in plant production rates has been demonstrated, and the annual tonnage of concentrate smelted is now double the original design rate. This paper summarizes recent modifications made to increase concentrate feed rates, increase on-line time, reduce copper losses and control the impurity level in anode copper. It includes improvements made to furnace design, improvements to reduce downtime f or boiler cleaning, and improvements made to the acid plant to allow handling of increased gas flowrates and higher gas strengths while maintaining low acid plant emission rates. IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Division of Fal conbridge Limited operates a base-metal mining and metallurgical complex, located in Timmins, Ontario, which includes an underground mine, a 13 500 tonne/day concentrator, a 130000 tonne/year zinc plant and a copper smelter and refinery, The copper smelter and refinery were commissioned in 1981, with an installed capacity of 59 000 tonnes/ year of cathode. The smelter, utilizing the continuous smelting technology of the Mitsubishi Process, has subsequently been expanded in production capacity, and in 1991 produced 113 500 tonnes of blister copper The capacity of the refinery, which uses Onahama No. 3 tankhouse technology, has been increased to 96 000 tonnes/year of cathode. The capacity increase at the smelter has been realized through the input of additional oxygen to both the smelting and converting furnaces, without increasing the process off-gas flowrate through the associated waste heat boilers.In this paper, a brief review of smelter operation and modifications in the period 1982 to 1987 is presented, together with a more detailed discussion of operation during 1988 to 1991, and a discussion of future planned improvements."

"Most deposits display a high degree of geological and mineralogical complexity that can affect metallurgical processing. Therefore, the proper characterization of the ore and gangue minerals requires a multi disciplinary approach combining geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and processing. However, mineralogy to a large extent informs the metallurgical process. Automated methods can be used throughout the mining chain from advanced exploration through to production.In this presentation we discuss actual case studies where automated mineralogy has been applied in a geometallurgical framework at a pre-feasibility to feasibility level. These include examples from a strongly serpentinized magmatic Ni deposit (Dumont) and a magmatic Cu-Ni deposit (Maturi). Mineral speciation and ratios, e.g., chalcopyrite, cubanite, and pentlandite/pyrrhotite are critical to model the Cu-Ni magmatic deposit. In the serpentinized Ni ore, automated mineralogy is used to speciate the Ni minerals into sulphides, alloys and refractory Ni in the silicate matrix.The mineralogical results are linked to the metallurgical test work in order to model the geometallurgical domains. These case studies will illustrate how mineral quantification and improved understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy reduce technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning (e.g., Dunham et al., 2011). It is aimed to improve the understanding of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical parameters of an ore. Informational gaps among the different disciplines are often apparent. Automated mineralogy is shown in many studies (e.g., Eppinger et al., 2013, Philander and Rozendaal, 2013) to constitute the link between geology and metallurgy. The geometallurgical approach can provide specific data to geology, mining and mineral processing development and plant operations. The scope of the automated mineralogy is to illustrate how mineral quantification can improve the understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy, and reduce the technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development."

"A market survey of all underground mines in Canada (Fig. 1) was completed to determine the ex1ent to which cable bolts are being used as ground support. One hundred and nine questionnaires were distributed with 65% of them being returned completed. As a result, the quantity, types and locations of cable bolt installations have been determined. In addition, the grout pumps used, time required and cost of installations have been addressed. The popularity of other support types used in underground mines is summarized.IntroductionRock reinforcement consists of installing support within the rock mass (internal) or within the excavation (external). Within the past twenty-five years several new types of ground support have been introduced within the mining industry. Cable bolts were first introduced to the Canadian mining industry in the 19605 (Gramoli, 1975).Cable bolts have gained increased acceptance as a method of ground support during the past decade. The cable bolt is comprised of one central wire surrounded by six slightly smaller outside wires and typically having an over-all diameter of 15.2 nun to 15.9 nun (0.6 in. to 0.625 in.). The cable wires are made from high-strength steel with an ultimate strength of 26 tonnes (58 000 Ibs) (Goris, 1990). Current cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to reinforce the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used in open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods (Fig. 2).They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, they are generally less than 20 m (65.5 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage compared to previously used ground support is that the cables are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils allowing relatively long support to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m).With the advent of bulk mining methods which require comparatively large stopes, it has necessitated the use of relatively long support tendons to stabilize the large spans being created. As a result, the use of cable bolts for ground support in mines has increased significantly within the past decade."

"A 2D finite element modelling (FEM), based on pure Lagrangian approach, is developed for studying the serrated chip formation during high speed machining (HSM) of 7075-T651 alloy. The solution was achieved using a commercial software package, ABAQUS/Explicit v6.13. The Johnson-Cooke (JC) constitutive equation is used to describe the work material behaviour. Moreover, the JC damage equation is implemented into the FEM to take into account for the shear localization during the serrated chip formation. Modified Coulomb friction model has been used to characterize the sliding/sticking effects on the tool-chip interface with the friction coefficient and shear flow stress determined by force calibration and machining data, respectively. The proposed FEM is validated using experimental data obtained in HSM of 7075-T651. The FEM was able to predict accurately serrated chip morphology. The intensity of chip segmentation was found to increase with cutting speed.INTRODUCTIONHigh speed machining (HSM) is one of the most used processes for manufacturing aircraft parts with aluminum alloys. For aluminum alloys, the use of HSM increases metal removal rate and reduces the formation of built up edges and burrs. However, it was found that serrated (also named segmented or sawtooth chip) and discontinuous chips can be produced during HSM of some high strength aluminum alloys, such as 7075-T6 alloy (Rao & Shin, 2001). Many parameters were found to affect the segmented/discontinuous chip formation during the machining of aluminum alloys.There are two cases in which the serrated chip can forms: the first is when machining hardened materials (Morehead, Huang, & Luo, 2007), and the second, when machining ductile materials with a cutting speed higher than a critical value (Barry & Byrne, 2002). Different theories and models were developed in order to explain the formation mechanism of such kind of chips. According to Astakhov (2006), the segmented chip formation is attributed to variations in stress and plastic deformation states, and resulting temperatures on the cutting zone. Liyao et al. (2013) stated that the segmented chip formation was mainly attributable to adiabatic shear instability/catastrophic strain localization. Others (Vyas & Shaw, 1999) suggest that the fracture/crack propagation mechanism is at the root of chip generation."

Methods for arsenic compound removal from aqueous solutions include processes such as: coagulation, adsorption, membrane techniques, electrochemical and biotechnology techniques. Advanced oxidation using both UV radiation and strong oxidizing agents such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide may also decompose these compounds. It is known that effluents from metallurgical processes contain inorganic arsenic compounds in addition to the organic compounds such as: dimethylarsinic acid and phenylarsonic acid. This paper presents the conditions that lead to the formation of deposits containing mainly arsenic, such as pH, the wavelength of the radiation and the type of oxidant, for this type of effluent.

"Abstract - Banded iron formation rocks associated with massive sulfide lenses in the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag deposit in the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex, South Africa , were investigated with respect to the geochemistry of manganiferous silicate-rich bands. Two common varieties of these are: amphibole- and garnet-rich iron formation bands. The results reveal that the former are enriched in Fe, Mg, Cu, Co and S. The garnet-rich bands are enriched in Mn, Ca, P, Pb and Ba with significant detrital contamination of Ti, Al, Zr, Cr, Y, V, Ni and Nd.The silicate-rich bands have compositions, in terms of, Si/Al, Si/Fe, Fe/Mn, La/Ce and Co/Zn, comparable to submarine chemical sediments which precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. The garnet­ and amphibole-rich bands are interpreted as ""evolved"" and ""immature"" hydrothermal sediments, respectively. The latter resulted from rapid precipitation after exhalation, whereas the former had a longer residence within sea water. The silicate-rich bands both exhibit increasing Mn/(Mn+ Fe) fractions, which are consistent with a variation expected from proximal to distal depositional settings. The prevalence of garnet-rich bands over amphibole-rich bands is interpreted as the result of injection of hydrothermal fluids from a single vent situated along the northwest margin of the Broken Hill deposit."

In order to improve the utilization rate of blasthole and blasting effect in vertical shafts, 5 kinds of millisecond blasting model tests with three circle vertical blastholes have been conducted in various delay times with concrete as model material. The blasting effects of millisecond blasting model tests are investigated from cutting volume, cutting depth, and blasting fragmentation, then a reasonable delay time is obtained. In the middle of concrete model, there are 4 blastholes uniformly distributed in the first circle, 6 blastholes uniformly distributed in the second circle, and 10 blastholes uniformly distributed in the third circle. Each blasthole is charged with one millisecond delay electric detonator, and the rest is blocked with stemming. The depth of blastholes in the first and second circle is 180mm, which is 20mm deeper than those in the third circle. After initiation, the blasting cavity is cleaned up, then the cutting volume and cutting depth are measured. Meanwhile, the blasting fragments are gathered and have analysed by function Rosin-Rammler. The test results show that when the inner two circle blastholes initiated simultaneously and the third circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 3920 cm3 and 68 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 53.2 mm and 74.6 mm respectively. While when all three circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is also 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 10705 cm3 and 118 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 51.0 mm and 81.7 mm respectively. The researches indicate that for millisecond blasting with multiturn blastholes, the reasonable blasting scheme is multiturn blastholes initiated in millisecond delay and the reasonable delay time is 50 ms.

"Factors affecting the extraction of gold are of a mineralogical nature. Knowledge of the mineralogy of the ore or metallurgical product to be treated, if appropriately combined with the metallurgical test work, may improve gold recoveries. .This paper outlines the mineralogical techniques f or the study of gold ores and metallurgical products and describes the gold mineralogy in relation to its metallurgy. An effective plan for studying refractory and other difficult ores, combining metallurgical test work, chemical analysis and mineralogy and capable of giving positive results over relatively short periods of time, is suggested.IntroductionFactors affecting gold recoveries are of a mineralogical nature and include (i) the gold-bearing minerals, (ii) their grain size and, particularly where the grain size is very fine (10 microns in diameter and less), (iii) their host minerals and (iv) the association these form with the gold-bearing minerals.Mineralogical studies of gold ores and metallurgical products containing gold in economic amounts (today down to 1/10 of one ounce per tonne or 2.84 ppm) are difficult and time consuming. Mostly because of such reason, metallurgical testing (test work) is usually done simply by trial and error without understanding the causes for failure or success.Mineralogical studies, if appropriately conducted and combined with the test work, provide an efficient mean s of improving recoveries through the understanding of gold losses derived from the use of the wrong technique for separation. The information they provide is therefore the first step in the development of recovery techniques, for those ores where the test work alone failed to produce positive results."

THE problem of dust control in metal mines has, of late years, received considerable attention. In 1932, a detailed study of dust conditions at the Sullivan mine was undertaken and, while there are no actual data available regarding conditions prior to that date, there has unquestionably been a great improvement as a result of the investigation and of the preventive methods adopted. In attacking the problem, three main factors were considered: first, and most important, how to prevent dust from being formed; second, how to depress or collect it if formed; and third-if unable to accomplish these-what precautionary measures must be adopted to prevent inhalation of this dust. Seven distinct methods of dust control are now practised at the Sullivan. Six of these are employed underground; they are tabulated below in the order of their relative importance. The seventh method is used in the crushing plants on the surface. "The Nechalacho rare metal deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is currently being taken through Feasibility Study by Avalon Rare Metals Inc. QEMSCAN analysis and supplementary electron microprobe analysis were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and determine REE distribution among the minerals. QEMSCAN mineralogy was performed to provide textural information on the mineralization, determine the variability of the ore and identify REE domains, and the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix consists predominantly of silicate minerals. The REE minerals include allanite, monazite, synchysite, columbite, fergusonite, and bastnaesite. Zircon is present in considerable amounts and is a REE carrier. Fergusonite and zircon account for most of the HREE, and monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite the LREE. QEMSCAN mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data are implemented to define the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, and predict recoveries and grades.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties.Economic and potentially economic REE deposits form two main groups, a more commonly occurring “light rare earth element” (LREE) group containing lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium and a less commonly occurring “heavy rare earth element” (HREE) group which, in addition to the LREE, contains elevated concentrations of the more valuable REE, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, yttrium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and scandium. The first group is hosted primarily by carbonatites and the second by highly alkaline (Na + K > Al) silicate igneous rocks. The LREE are produced mainly from bastnaesite, monazite, etc., while HREE are produced almost exclusively from low-grade secondary ion adsorption clay deposits in which the REE are adsorbed onto the surfaces of kaolinite and halloysite, clay minerals produced by the weathering of granite and sediments. HREE are also found in fegusonite, zircon, xenotime, etc but are not produced presently from these minerals. China is responsible for 97% of the World’s production of the REE, mainly from the giant Bayan Obo, carbonatite-related deposit and from the clay deposits mentioned above.Quantitative automated mineralogy is increasingly being applied to ore deposits. It helps users to understand and improve mineralogical parameters for geological and metallurgical purposes. Data include textural characterization, to quantification and distribution of ore and gangue minerals, liberation and association of the REE minerals. The data can be used to define mineralogical domains and predict the metallurgical response of the ore (Gunning, de Souza, & Grammatikopoulos, 2009)."

The renewed interest of the past few years in the Appalachian and Michigan oil provinces has not, as yet, created any marked increase in activity in Southwestern Ontario. During 1960 development drilling in-creased somewhat over 1959, but exploratory drilling decreased slightly. More attention was devoted to the deeper horizons, but lake drilling de-creased considerably. Oil production reached a new peak and gas production increased slightly. During 1960 an interesting oil and gas discovery was made in the Cambrian and gas discoveries six miles off-shore in the eastern part of Lake Erie were made in the Clinton-Cataract zone of the Silurian. This paper reviews activities during 1960, summarizes the discoveries made to-date and the pertinent exploration data relating to the prospects of the region and discusses some of the economic aspects of exploration and development. In the overall open pit mine planning process, mining phase design is a strategic driver in guiding and constructing the block extraction sequence and determining the annual net cash flow distribution. Mining phase design should obey some practical constraints, such as ?minimum mining width? and ?flat mining phase bottom?, to allow space for haul road development and truck and shovel access on each bench. However, these practical mining phase design requirements are not taken into account in all first-cut mining phase design methods and post-processing is always required to convert an impractical design to a practical one, resulting in a potentially significant loss of Net Present Value (NPV) relative to the first-cut impractical designs. In this paper, we present a method using a meta-heuristic algorithm ? Simulated Annealing ? to enforce those practical constraints in determining a mineable phase design whilst ensuring minimum NPV loss.

Air is the gaseous substance that envelopes the earth and forms its atmosphere. It is remarkable in the constancy of its composition; for while this is being continually changed as the result of the respiration of men and animals, and by addition of gases arising from organic changes and the products of combustion, it is ever being brought back to normal and the proper balance restored by the processes of plant and vegetable life. Nature sees to it that the air in which we live and breathe is kept purified. This does not apply to the air in a coal mine, where there are no natural forces to change and make use of the different gases formed or evolved, and where mechanical ventilation is the only effective means of keeping the air pure. The atmosphere consists of oxygen and nitrogen, not in the combined state but merely mixed. By volume, the composition is: oxygen, 21 percent, nitrogen, 79 percent, there being included with the latter small quantities of such substances as water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitric acid, ammonia, ozone, argon, neon, and organic gases. Of the two principal gases which form air, oxygen alone supports life. When air is inhaled into the lungs the oxygen is absorbed by the blood, which carries it through the body to nourish and energize it. Exhaled air consists of water vapour and about 4 per cent carbon dioxide, with from 16 1/2 to 17 per cent oxygen and 79 per cent nitrogen; the oxygen alone having been drawn on to any considerable extent.

"Afton Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) operates an 8500-tpd open-pit copper-gold mine near Kamloops, R.C. The pit is currently 480 feet deep and will reach an ultimate depth of 800 feet. The east, south and west walls of the pit are composed of Triassic andesites (Nicola Volcanic Formation) and contemporaneous sub-volcanic intrusions of micro-syenite, microdiorite, diorite and picrite-basalt (Iron Mask Pluton). The north wall of the pit consists of Tertiary sandstones, shales and mudstones (Tranquille formation) and dacitic dykes, sills, flows and tuff s (Kamloops Volcanic Formation).The Afton copper-gold orebody (30 million tons of open-pit ore with a grade of 1.0 per cent copper, 0.016 oz/ton gold and 0.12 oz/ton silver) occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask Pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The Triassic-Tertiary contact is a complex fault system dipping 65 degrees southward and causing the Triassic rocks to overlie the Tertiary rocks. The detailed trace of this contact is very intricate due to the mutual interference of three principal fault systems.The dominant geological structures in both Triassic and Tertiary rocks are faults striking WNW and dipping 65 degrees southward, i.e. sub-parallel to the orebody (strike faults). Cross faults and oblique faults are abundant and highly significant in some sectors of the pit. The Tertiary sedimentary rocks show an early series of northwesterly plunging folds deformed by a later series of northeasterly striking folds. Major lithological and structural boundaries divide the pit into 8 structural domain s within which the pitwall slope stability is controlled by the local geological structures and lithology.Assay data from production blasthole samples and exploration diamond drillhole samples show a log-normal frequency distribution, with a fairly low relative variance. Variograms computed from production blasthole samples show good continuity with elliptical horizontal zones of influence which are truncated by the major faults that bound the ore zone."

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. Today's rare earth industry is undergoing significant and rapid evolutionary change toward greater reliability and diversity of supply, increased security of supply chains, and better price forecasting. Technology innovation is reducing rare earth production costs while decreasing the impact of producers on the environment. Advances in rare earth material science are reducing the need for relatively scarce heavy rare earths (HREEs) in high-performance neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent rare earth magnets and opening the NdFeB magnetic market space for a broader range of downstream applications. Rare earth producers such as Molycorp are increasingly able to offer long-term supply agreements with forward price predictability, something that has not been the case for many years. All of these trends are helping to restore the confidence of customers and other stakeholders in the rare earth space. That increased confidence is likely to bolster global demand for rare earth materials and expand innovative utilization of these remarkable materials.
