Archaeometallurgical remains can be a valuable source of information about past technological activities and, by inference, the societies that undertook them. Material traces of former metal-producing or metal-working centres can include raw materials, products, or metallurgical installations such as mines, furnaces or forges. Of these remains, the most common is slag, often left undisturbed since its original production. Physical and chemical analyses of archaeological slag and metal can often reveal the processes and materials involved in their formation. Mineral composition and softening temperature of a slag, for instance, can indicate the conditions of the metallurgical operation, such as temperature and atmosphere and, thus, help identify metallurgical processes which took place at a site(1). The present report illustrates the value of such analysis. Metal-working remains from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, near Midland, Ontario, on the south side of Georgian Bay have been analyzed in order to determine the techniques and processes used by the 17th-century blacksmith who worked at the mission headquarters from 1642 to 1649. Samples were selected from a very large collection of blacksmith refuse which was excavated from the site by archaeologist Kenneth Kidd in 1941-42(2).

L’industrie minière génère chaque année une quantité considérable de rejets miniers, principalement sous forme de stériles ou de résidus de l’usine de traitement. Les stériles sont des roches sans valeur économique, excavées pour atteindre la roche minéralisée. Ils sont usuellement empilés en surface formant des haldes à stériles. Les résidus miniers sont des roches finement broyées, mélangées avec de l’eau, résultant du traitement du minerai. Ils sont généralement pompés et entreposés en surface dans des parcs à résidus. Cependant, leur stockage peut être sujet à des instabilités géotechniques, mais également géochimiques, pouvant entrainer des problèmes environnementaux majeurs, tels que le drainage minier acide (DMA). Le DMA se produit lorsque des minéraux sulfureux, contenus dans ces deux types de rejets, s’oxydent au contact de l’eau et de l’oxygène [1]. Le DMA se caractérise par une solution acide (pH inférieur à 6) riche en métaux, contaminant les eaux souterraines et de surface et représentant alors un danger pour la faune, la flore et la santé humaine [2]. La remise en état et la fermeture des sites miniers doivent donc être pensées dès la phase d’étude du projet d’exploitation, afin de proposer une méthode de gestion des rejets qui permettra de limiter les impacts environnementaux pendant et après l'exploitation.

Solvent extraction (SX) is a widely used method for the extraction of copper from pregnant leach solutions or other ionic solutions in hydrometallurgical applications. About 17% of total refined copper production worldwide is produced using SX followed by electrowinning (EW). Conventional SX units, such as mixer-settlers, consume a large amount of extractant, offer poor process control and yield low extraction efficiency. Extraction efficiency is poor due to low specific interface area, crud formation, emulsification, and slow phase separation stage. Micro solvent extraction (micro-SX) is a rapidly developing technology that provides an opportunity for improved process control, higher extraction efficiency, lower residence time and, as such, has a potential to reduce the environmental footprint of SX operation. In this research, extraction of copper ions in an acetate buffer media is investigated using D2EHPA with kerosene as a diluent. Chemical factors such as extractant concentration and ionic concentration of aqueous phase are varied to determine the optimum conditions. Subsequently, the extraction efficiency and reaction time of new micro-SX reactors are compared against previous bulk SX studies. Extraction in the microfluidic reactor was observed to be faster with a residence time more than an order of magnitude lesser than bulk SX. This study forms a prelude for developing new modular micro-SX units which will enable continuous, effective, and safe operation on a large scale. In future studies, numerical and analytical models validated through this work will help eliminate rigorous experimentation and enable faster design and fabrication of micro-SX units. INTRODUCTION Conventional industrial solvent extraction (SX) units such as mixer-settlers, extraction columns present various disadvantages. Low specific interfacial area, crud formation, and emulsification in industrial reactors lead to long extraction times and severely hamper extraction efficiency (Priest et al., 2011; Chen et al., 2017). Microfluidic extraction considerably improves upon the current extraction practices by (1) creating a large surface to volume ratio that enables rapid mass transfer across the interface, (2) better process control, and (3) easier separation of phases (Kashid, Renken, & Kiwi-Minsker, 2011; Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014). These factors establish micro-SX as a crucial mode for process intensification. Although, a micro SX unit has significantly low processing volume than conventional extraction methods, their throughput can be increased via massive parallelisation (‘numbering up’), which is an area of active research (Darekar, Singh, Mukhopadhyay, & Shenoy, 2016a; Kriel, Woollam, Gordon, Grant, & Priest, 2016).

Gold passivation in thiosulfate leaching media is a major barrier to its implementation. Addition of Cu (II) into the leaching solution has shown to aid in gold dissolution, but the mechanism by which it acts, and its role in the passive layer, remains unknown. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), in tandem with linear sweep voltammetry, were employed to determine the dependence of leaching currents on mass transport and for fingerprint identification of sulfur species on the surface of gold. SERS leaching experiments were performed using gold nanorod electrodes that showed increased stability compared to other SERS active surfaces.

"The Nd-Fe-B scrap was placed in Fe crucible with pure Mg in an Ar atmosphere, and the scraps were melted using an induction heating method. The effects of experimental parameters such as melting temperature (range of 993K to 1073K) and holding time (15min-600min) on the ability of extraction were investigated. The microstructure and diffusion layers were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the constituent phases were characterized using XRay Diffraction (XRD). Diffusion of Nd through the Nd-Fe-B scrap into liquid Mg was described, and the diffusion coefficient of Nd in liquid Mg was estimated.INTRODUCTIONNd-Fe-B magnets are usually produced either from comminuted melt-spun ribbons as bonded magnets or hot pressed bulk magnets, or by sintering in conjunction with prior green compaction in an applied magnetic field (Sagawa et al., 1984). These magnets have been widely used for various electromechanical and electronic devices such as voice coil motors (VCMs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Samardzija et al., 2012; Matsuura et al., 2006). The production of the Nd-Fe-B magnets is increasing by about 20% per year because of their excellent magnetic properties. However, the expansion of Nd-Fe-B magnet market induced a concern for the scarcity of Nd at the aspect of natural resource. Therefore, the development of an effective recycling process for Nd-Fe-B magnet scraps is an extremely important issue from the viewpoint of resource and energy conservation. Several recycling processes for the Nd-Fe-B magnets have been proposed (Uda et al., 2002; Lyman et al., 1993]. It has been reported that the best separation of rare-earths from the Nd-Fe-B magnets is obtained by sulfuric acid dissolution followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. However, this process can make a large amount of waste water including dangerous solutions. Recently, (Xu et al., 2000) have reported a technique to extract Nd from 18Nd-72.4Fe-0.9B-1.82Pr-5.3Dy (wt.%) magnet scrap by using liquid metal extraction (LME) processing. However, these techniques seemed to be difficult for application, because the scraps consist of an infinitesimal amount of other minor elements (Pr, Dy, Cu, Al and Tb), and these minor elements can make a new intermetallic compounds with Mg. Also, some oxides or the plated Ni metal can be preventable to reaction between solid-liquid (S/L) interfaces. For these reasons, the substantive reaction mechanism between Mg and Nd-Fe-B scrap is not clear. In this study, the simple composition of 33Nd-66Fe-1B (wt.%) magnet scraps were prepared using an induction melting process. The effects of the experimental parameter on the diffusion properties between Mg and scraps were investigated to determine whether these methods could be used in industrial application in a liquid metal extraction (LME) process."

"In a continuing investigation into the development of uranium alloys for armament applications, some complex base alloy corn positions were modified by varying the amount of alloying elements and by removing one or two of the alloying elements in turn from the base alloys. These uranium-base alloys were specially formulated in a search for heat-treatable, high-strength, ductile, high-density alloys. All alloys studied were ternary, quaternary or more complex alloys of uranium with molybdenum, zirconium, niobium and vanadium. Each cast alloy was studied under three different heat-treatments, and its mechanical and corrosion properties were determined. It was found that although most of the alloys studied had the hardness and strength required, they were extremely brittle and notch-sensitive under tensile stresses."

Fieldwork in the Meguma of Nova Scotia and Archean equivalents shows that bedding-parallel quartz lode gold veins (LVs) commonly occur at the top of graded elastic sequences. We define a "gold cycle" (GC) by analogy with Bouma turbidites and show that most "shear zones" and "lamprophyres" correspond to the upper pelagic-pelitic (E) division. We describe GCs from Archean Chester Twp, ON; Elmhirst, ON; Bourlamaque, QC; "intrusions" and interpret them as crystal tuffs and tuff-breccias. Extensive early Archean pyroclastic volcanism is implied: the genesis of trondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks must be re-examined. The geopetal nature and asymmetric alteration of LVs indicates genesis from sea-floor hydrothermal vents. Textures suggest that often quartz was deposited as a gel. Vent geometry (fracture, point source or diffuse seep), bottom topography and vent spacing is reflected in wade-thickness plots. GC facing directions survive metamorphism. The Bourlamaque batholith was a flat-lying sheet of quartz-feldspar-hornblende crystal tuff, and isoclinal folding has repeated one or more gold-bearing horizons. Syngenesis clarifies and simplifies LV formation with major implications for models. Exploration becomes more cost-effective. Basin analysis, whole rock geochemistry, ore lens geometry and vent spacing can be used.

In 1984 and 1985, two 7.6m diameter TBM tunnels were driven from the Donkin-Morien peninsula in Nova Scotia to access the Harbour coal seam. The design of the ground support was based on identifying zones of rock failure through the application of the Hoek Brown failure criterion and the early use of finite element analyses. In 1992, the mining project was abandoned and the tunnels allowed to flood. Monitoring data from the tunnel was subsequently used as a case study in the development of the concepts of brittle rock behaviour. In 2007, the tunnels were pumped out as part of a feasibility study into the reintroduction of longwall mining into the coalfield. There is a good match between observations of the collapse zones in the roof and sides of the tunnel and a simple elastic analysis using brittle parameters, a spalling limit of 5, and a low independent shear modulus. The brittle analyses form the basis of the design for the resupport of the tunnels.

"Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). The mineral inventory, based on drilling, is 8.568 Moz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn at average grades of 0.72 g/t Au, 0.34 wt% Cu, and 2.13 wt% Zn (inventory for a cone at $400/oz Au and $0.80/lb Cu by Norby and Orobona, 2002)."

In this work, structural and electronic properties of smithsonite (ZnCO3) and cerussite (PbCO3) as the typical lead-zinc oxide minerals is simulated by means of DFT. The calculated results could be concluded as: (1) The density of states (DOS) of Zn atom in ZnCO3 is nearer to the Fermi level than that of Pb atom in PbCO3, suggesting that the Zn atom of ZnCO3 is more active and easier to interact with water molecules and hydroxyl ions. Smithsonite, therefore, could be more readily depressed in the flotation process. (2) The bond population value of Zn-O (0.23) and C-O (0.92) in ZnCO3 is obviously larger than that of Pb-O (-0.01) and C-O (0.85) in PbCO3, indicating that the covalent characteristic of ZnCO3 is stronger than that of PbCO3. (3) It is shown that the charge of Pb (+1.32e) in PbCO3 is more positive than that of Zn (+1.22e) in ZnCO3, suggesting that cerussite is easier to interacting with HS- compared with smithsonite in the flotation process. In summary, the structural and electronic property of smithsonite is completely different with cerussite, leading to the difference of their flotation behaviour.

A current problem in gold production is the presence of copper minerals which dissolve during conventional cyanidation practice. The dissolved copper causes several problems in the different stages of the process. This issue is the base for copper elimination/recovery methods such as the Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling, and Thickening (SART) process, which is currently used in gold production plants around the world. Even though the process is well established, new challenges appear as the composition of the solution varies from ore to ore, in some circumstances affecting the performance of the SART process. This work presents a thermodynamic study and experimental tests performed to understand the role of the initial copper concentration and sulfur addition, on the efficiency of the copper removal. For a constant cyanide concentration, an increase in the initial copper concentration causes a decrease in copper removal; high sulfur/copper molar ratios favor copper removal. We demonstrated that the cuprous sulfide formed from solutions with high ionic strength, presents better sedimentation rates than solutions with less ionic strength. For solutions with low sedimentation rates, the use of some pretreatment is necessary to facilitate the sedimentation such as addition of flocculants, particle recirculation and the used ultrasonic pretreatment.

"A new process for treating scheelite for the production of tungstic tri-oxide is described. The novelty of the process resides in that an ion-ex-changer is used to convert sodium tungstate to either ammonium tung-state or tungstic acid.The process consists of a conventional hydrochloric acid leach of the scheelite concentrate, and the dissolution of the impure tungstic acid thus produced with sodium hydroxide at pH 8. The sodium tungstate solution is clarified and passed through a column of Dowex 50Wx8 ion-ex-change resin to exchange the sodium ions for either hydrogen or ammonium ions, both being suitable. The tungsten-bearing column effluent is evaporated to crystallize the tungsten as ammonium tungstate; the crystals are washed with nitric acid and water and decomposed by heat to pro-duce tungstic trioxide of high purity.Ninety-six per cent of the tungsten in the concentrate may be re-covered as tungs tic trioxide (W03), and the reagents consumed are 0.7 g HCl, 0.41 g NaOH and either 1.73 g NH.Cl or 225 g HCl per gram of tungsten."

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain and Portugal) contains one of the largest reserves of pyrite in the world with mining activities dating back to prehistoric times. About one hundred abandoned mine wastes and galleries release a huge acidity and metal load to the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Once the mining activity is over, polluting discharges can persists for decades or even centuries with no specific responsible entity. In-situ passive remediation technologies are especially suitable for these orphan sites. The concept is to insert a reactive porous material in the natural flow path of contaminated surface and ground waters, and it is implemented through infiltration ponds and reactive barriers, respectively. Calcium carbonate pea-size gravel is the common alkalinity supplier to neutralize acidity and precipitate metals. These remediation systems have been traditionally implemented in coal mines. However, the acid drainages from the Iberian Pyrite Belt contain metal concentrations one to two orders of magnitude higher than those from coal mines and require special designs to avoid quick clogging or passivation (coating) of the grains of reactive material. To overcome these problems, a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate (DAS) mixed from fine-grained limestone sand and a coarse inert matrix (e.g. wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate. The high porosity and the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retard clogging. However, limestone dissolution only raises pH to values around 6.5, which is sufficient to precipitate the hydroxides of trivalent metals (Al, Fe), but it is not alkaline enough to remove divalent metals. Magnesium oxide, which hydrates to Mg hydroxide upon contact with water, buffers the solution pH between 8.5 and 10. A DAS system replacing limestone with caustic magnesium oxide has been tested to be very efficient to remove divalent metals (Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb) from drainage previously treated with limestone.

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

"Introduction The Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a provincial crown corporation which operates under a mandate to supply all customers within Saskatchewan with electricity and natural gas. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation operates two coal mines within the province of Saskatchewan. The Souris Valley Mine is located a few miles south of the city of Estevan and produces approximately 300 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped about four kilometres by truck and burned at the 882 MW Boundary Dam Power Station, also owned by the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The Poplar River Mine is located just south-west of the town of Coronach, Saskatchewan which is some 190 kilo metres west of Estevan. This mine produces approximately 1 675 000 Mg of lignite per year. The lignite is shipped seven miles by rail to the Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Power Station. The Poplar River Mine is the sole sup plier of fuel to the Poplar River Power Station, which generates some 300 MW of electrical power. A second 300 MW unit is due to be commissioned at the Poplar River Power Station in mid-1983 and the Poplar River Mine will have doubled its capacity to approximately 3 350 000 Mg per year by that time: Souris Valley Mine Geology The Souris Valley Mine extracts lignite from the Estevan seam of the Ravenscrag Formation. This formation is of Tertiary age and was deposited during the Paleocene Epoch. The Ravenscrag Formation outcrops throughout southern Saskatachewan and all coal mined in the province occurs in this formation. Ravenscrag sediments are deltaic in origin and are composed of a series of fine sands, silts, clay and lignite deposits."

"Strain rate and temperature dependent deformation conditions are present during elevated temperature forming of aluminum and other metallic materials. While many constitutive laws have been proposed to represent such deformation conditions, a closer investigation often reveals their limited applicability in terms of fit to the experimental data, and interpolation within and extrapolation outside of the range of experimental stress-strain curves. This is often because material-specific primary deformation mechanisms of temperature-dependent strain and strain rate hardening are poorly captured. In the present work, the Voce-Kocks constitutive model based on mechanics of dislocations storage and annihilation has been found to be suitable for many metallic materials. The model was modified to include the effect of temperature dependent shear modulus. The modified model is then employed to represent the experimental data obtained from uniaxial tensile tests on AA7075-O sheet at elevated temperatures and strain rates. Also, hot gas bulging tests were conducted to verify the applicability of this model. Further, finite element simulation of the hot gas bulge test was performed by incorporating the model as a user material subroutine. Good general agreement was observed between the experimental and FE model predicted results. Some sources of discrepancy in the prediction are also discussed.INTRODUCTION There has been much interest in light-weighting of automobiles from automotive related industries to reduce overall carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency of the vehicles. Aluminum alloys, and especially the medium-strength 5xxx and 6xxx series alloys, have been the primary focus in the last 3 decades to reach the above environmental goals (Huo, Hou, Zhang, & Zhang, 2016) whereas aerospace industry has traditionally focused on high strength 7xxx series aluminum (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu) alloys for structural components (Deng, Yin, & Huang, 2011). Recently, there has been much interest in high strength 7xxx series aluminum as a replacement for heavier steel automotive structural parts such as A-pillar, B-pillar, side impact beams etc. (Harrison & Luckey, 2014). This is both interesting and challenging since the above aluminum structural parts will need to not only meet impact safety standards but also possess sufficient formability for manufacturing such complex parts. Since the formability of high strength 7xxx series materials is quite poor at room temperature, much interest has focused on improving both formability and final part strength via high rate hot stamping, in-die quenching, and subsequent artificial ageing process steps (Kumar & Ross, 2016)."

"Abstract-Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstone belt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartzfeldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolite dikes. Several generations of mafic dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoic to the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silica rhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by flat to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic mafic rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arc signature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts. The andesites, quartz-feldspar porphyries, rhyolites and quartz monzodioritic stock are calc-alkaline, with strongly sloping REE patterns, enrichments in the large-ion lithophile elements, and depletions in the heavy REE and high-field-strength elements, features which are typical of more mature island-arc settings.At Omai, two types of gold-bearing veins can be distinguished: vein sets (± stockworks) and tension veins, both post-dating the regional metamorphic peak at the level they were emplaced. The relationship between the gold mineralization and its host lithologies does not seem to be genetic. Rather, the emplacement of mineralization was strongly influenced by the rheological contrasts between the intrusive/subvolcanic bodies and the volcanic/sedimentary country rocks. These contrasts helped to focus the regional stress upon the more competent intrusive subvolcanic bodies, resulting in brittle fracturing, and therefore in greatly enhanced permeability to hydrothermal fluids. The Omai gold mineralization can be classified as late tectonic, with its emplacement controlled by the last brittle to brittle-ductile stages of the Trans-Amazonian orogeny."

"Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."

An investigation into the use of Tetronics International’s thermal plasma technology based pyrometallurgical smelting process for the recovery of both platinum and rhenium was conducted. 1000 kg of Pt-Re catalysts containing 0.36 wt% Pt and 0.21 wt% Re was blended with fluxing agents, reducing agents and an iron based collector metal precursor and then fed into a plasma furnace over five individual trials at Tetronics International’s facility in Swindon, UK. Both platinum and rhenium partitioned to an iron rich collector metal phase in the furnace, which formed in-situ and accumulated beneath a less dense slag phase, derived from the inorganic substrate of the catalyst, and was easily separable. The levels of Pt and Re concentration achieved in the iron collector made it suitable for subsequent final refining. Technical recovery efficiencies of =98% for both platinum and rhenium were achieved and the concentrations of the metals in the recovered metal bullion were 2.23 wt% Pt and 1.35 wt% Re.

"Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstonebelt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with ma?c-ultrama?c intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartz-feldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolitedikes. Several generations of ma?c dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoicto the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silicarhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by ?at to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic ma?c rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arcsignature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts.
