"Flotation selectivity becomes progressively more difficult to achieve with decreasing particle size. One of the possible problems is agglomeration, i.e. particles clustering together. One mechanism derives from the surface charge all particles develop in water. Agglomeration driven by surface charge is known as coagulation. One form is coagulation between particles of two different minerals of opposite charge. Another is coagulation between particles of the same mineral when conditions are such that the charge approaches zero.The paper describes the method of measuring charge and a new automated settling technique for measuring agglomeration. The phenomena are illustrated with galena and pyrite. Methods of assessing the importance of agglomeration in the plant environment are still to be developed.IntroductionFine particles can agglomerate (i.e. adhere to each other) under certain conditions. This is counter-productive for any physical separation process, including flotation. One cause of agglomeration derives from the surface charge that all particles develop in water. Agglomeration due to surface charge effects is referred to as coagulation. There are two forms of coagulation. If the surface charge is brought to near zero then the force of repulsion is lost and particles coagulate. This usually applies to particles of one mineral type and the technical tenn is homocoagulation. On the other hand, if two particles have opposite charge there is an attractive force. Since the particles in this case are usually different minerals this is known as heterocoagulation.Both types of coagulation can cause minerals to be misplaced. In the case of heterocoagulation this is fairly obvious. One example that may be familiar is slime coating (fines of one mineral coating larger particles of another) But even homocoagulation can be a problem an agglomerate of the same mineral particles can entrap particles of another mineral."

EARLY in 1951, Falconbridge undertook a research program aimed at the development of a sulphate roasting process for the recovery of the non-ferrous rnetals from the nickeliferous pyrrhotite fraction of Falconbridge ore, in order to reduce the tonnage of iron entering the srnelter. Such a method, it was hoped, would permit a high recovery of the nickel from pyrrhotite otherwise entering the smelter feed, thus not only raising the grade of the latter and reducing its iron content, but also providing an iron oxide residue useful as a source of by-product iron ore. At an early stage in the exploratory laboratory test work it was found that the degree to which the nickel could be solubilized by the sulphating roasting treatment was limited by particle size and the ex-tent to which the pyrrhotite concentrates were freed of the nickel occurring as physically separable pentlandite, a mineral relatively difficult to roast. "Rubber liners at Denison Mines Limited are used in 10 1/2x 24' low discharg0 pebble mills. These were originally 10 1/2 x 13 Dominion overflow type ball mills. Experience here shows that the wear of rubber and ni-hard lifters is approximately the same in the feed end half of the mill, while the wear of rubber lifters is much greater in the discharge half. The wear of rubber plates is considerably less than white iron in the feed end half of the Mill and slightly more in the discharge end half of the Mill. Rubber components are lighter to handle but their installation is time consuming. This leads to the conclusion that a combination of ni-hard lifters a~~ rubber plates is the most economical compromise in Denison's case, for the Mill. "Traditionally deep shaft sinking from the ground surface was carried out using drill and blast methods. Although large diameter blind shaft drilling has been carried out successfully on numerous occasions previously, including as early as 1852 in Germany (Auld, 1995), little attempt has been made until more recently to mechanise the shaft sinking excavation process using down-the-hole machines. This paper reviews the development of deep shaft sinking machines from the early 1970’s up to the present day. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance, in order to access natural resources faster, and labour safety is increased compared to drill and blast operations. However, shaft sinking machines need to be capable of accommodating all the basic requirements for deep shaft sinking, namely: 1. Excavation and muck removal 2. Ground stability control 3. Groundwater ingress control 4. Temporary lining installation 5. Permanent lining installation and watertight sealing 6. Ventilation 7. Secondary means of egress for personnel In addition, how the machine operates in the shaft is an important factor, either slung on ropes from a surface headgear or on its own in the bottom of the shaft. An all-embracing machine which can deal with all of the above conditions is impossible but many of these requirements can be incorporated into a single machine. Deep shaft sinking also differs greatly from normal tunnel construction which employs the use of either a roadheader arm installed within a shield or a full-face tunnelling machine for excavation. Hydrostatic pressure and ground stability problems increase with depth, whereas in tunnelling the depth is normally relatively shallow and the aforementioned factors remain approximately constant along the tunnel length. DEEP SHAFT SINKING MACHINES All the shaft sinking carried out previously in the UK was by the traditional method of drill and blast. Elsewhere, in other parts of the world, attempts have been made to mechanise the process."

"One of the main drivers of overall profitability of pyrometallurgical vessels is refractory lining campaign life. Increased economic pressure to improve vessel life requires innovative solutions to the problem of refractory cooling. Hatch has recently developed a high-intensity, waterless cooling system that bridges the performance gap between external shell cooling and internal water-cooled copper elements. External shell cooling has a limited effectiveness in protecting the refractory lining, because it is thermally insulated from the hotface of the lining by its thickness. This situation does not improve until the lining itself has become worn near the end of the campaign. The patented technology developed by Hatch overcomes this problem by positioning high-velocity air-cooling channels within the lining, closer to the hotface where the cooling benefits can be realized throughout the entire duration of the campaign. The current paper presents the development and application of Internal Air Cooling technology as well as results from the pilot campaign in an operating commercial vessel. Various adaptations for this novel, cost-effective and inherently safe system are also discussed."

Several commercial polyacrylamide flocculants most widely used in Western Canadian mineral processing plants have been analyzed chemically and compared in standardized settling tests as aids to thickening and clarification. Data are included for both dry and liquid-type flocculants. Percentages of active ingredients in these commercial products varied Widely. Performances were compared on the basis of: equal additions of active ingredients, nearly equal molecular weights and nearly equal degrees of ionic character. Based on zone settling velocities and supernatant clarities of siliceous slurries coagulated by lime additions, dry flocculants proved more economical than liquid flocculants. Using these same two criteria, the most highly anionic were more effective than either weakly anionic or non ionic polyacrylamide- type flocculants.

Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit. This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration. The achieved plant stability and increment of ore throughput are also reported in this paper.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

"This paper presents the latest flotation development testwork conducted in 2015 on the ‘B Zone’ samples from the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC). Since the discovery by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), metallurgical development has been under taken by a number of mining companies targeting various value metals, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths.Most recent, Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest) completed a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in 2013 where the flowsheet was relatively complex and led Quest to explore alternative options. In 2014, the PFS flowsheet was simplified and one of the features introduced was pre-concentration by rougher flotation. The combined rougher flotation concentrate and slimes successfully recovered >90% TREE in 60% mass thus reducing capital cost and technical risks of the downstream hydrometallurgical processes. The latest flotation development testwork focused on achieving a pre-concentrate in which >80% TREE are recovered in 20% mass. Two separate reagent schemes, based on an ester phosphate collector (Clariant 1682) and a benzoylhydroxamic acid collector (Florrea 7510), were developed. Parameters evaluated in the development testwork included desliming, secondary yttrium and zircon collectors, depressants, temperature, conditioning temperature, time, and density, pH, sodium silicate type, cleaning, and flowsheet configuration. Both developed reagent schemes achieved the targeted metallurgy.INTRODUCTIONThe Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC) was discovered after geological survey and mapping studies by Geological Survey of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources between 1967 and 1980. Subsequent exploratory drilling programs by Iron Ore Company (IOC) in the 1980s found that the REE and high field strength element (HFSE) mineralization were within the central region of the SLAC which was named A Zone by IOC and later renamed Main Zone by Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest). Additional exploratory drilling outside the Main Zone by IOC and later by Quest, led to the discovery of B Zone, which was recognized as the most significant deposit of rare earth elements, yttrium, and zirconium in the SLAC. The B Zone Indicated Resources are estimated at 278.13 Mt at 0.93% total rare earth oxide (TREO) and Inferred Mineral Resources are estimated at 214.35 Mt at 0.85% TREO (Oyediran et al., 2014)."

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Proper fan design remains a major factor in reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), which means that there are compelling reasons for making use of comprehensive factory testing at full power before fans are dispatched to site to simulate the mine’s current and future design requirements, and thus verify the fan’s effectiveness in ‘real’ conditions.INTRODUCTION A primary mine fan is considered the heartbeat of the entire mine ventilation system, drawing fresh air from the surface and providing a safe environment for miners. A ventilation system’s lack of performance often leads to a reduction in acceptable air quality levels for underground working operations and can potentially have an adverse impact on production rates."

A local additional potential model (LAPM) was developed to illustrate the role of strain rate in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of pipelines. According to LAPM, both density and mobility of the local active spots on the steel surface, i.e., dislocation emergence points, increase linearly with strain rate. Generation of such active spots introduces an additional negative potential locally, affecting the electrochemical reaction and, consequently, the susceptibility of the steel to SCC. Electrochemical corrosion measurements, slow strain rate tests and electrochemical hydrogen permeation test were combined to demonstrate the validity of LAPM to illustrate pipeline SCC in an acidic soil solution. It is found that a maximum of the SCC susceptibility occurs at strain rate of 10-6 s1, which is associated with an enhanced hydrogen evolution due to the local additional potential (LAP) effect.

ALTHOUGH cylindrical grinding mills have long been used, there is wide divergence of opinion as to what constitute best operating conditions. Questions such as mill diameter, diameter-length ratio, revolutions per minute, type and size of grinding media, volume of charge, circulating load, pulp level, pulp consistency, liner design, and size of feed, have all been given serious consideration by competent scientific investigators as well as by operators. While many laboratory and plant tests have been made that would seem to justify certain definite conclusions, there is a dearth of definite data giving actual results obtained when a grinding mill working between fixed limits is operated at its maximum capacity under varying conditions as to ball load, circulating load, speed, etc. In tests conducted recently at the Hollinger, extending over a period of thirteen months, to determine the best operating conditions for a ball-mill 6 ft. 6 in. diameter inside the liners, some very interesting facts have been ascertained. This paper is presented in the desire to make public the results of these tests and not with the idea that the last word has been spoken in regard to grinding. We feel, however, that these facts justify certain definite conclusions and hope that, by the fullest and frankest criticism and discussion, the essentials necessary for the correct design and operation of grinding mills will become better known.

This paper describes a platform for autonomous operations in open pit mining environments. A typical operation consists of: (1) Initial locomotion toward a remote worksite; (2) Pattern navigation within the worksite; (3) Worksite manipulations and (4) Return locomotion to the start location. The platform includes precise localization module based upon the fusion of odometry, inertial and GPS measurements. The guidance module starts from a set of way points specified on a GPSreferenced map and plans and executes the mission. A typical mission includes specified manipulative tasks along the navigation path. During motion execution the on-board system continuously verifies that the path is free of obstacles and that the hardware is not overloaded. Momentary losses of external positioning measurements does not adversely affect the performance, owing to the redundancy in position and heading estimation. A rehearsal phase follows planning and allows the supervisor to examine the kinematic behavior of the platform during motion, thus reducing the need for continuous monitoring during execution and providing protection against potential losses of communication.

The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited operates five underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. Four of the mines, the Frood-Stobie, Creigh-ton, Murray and Garson, are located on the south range of the basin with-in a radius of IO miles of the centre of the city of Sudbury. The fifth mine, Levack, is on the north range about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. In 1960 the total ore production was in excess of 16 mil-lion tons, 95 per cent of which was produced from the five underground mines and the balance from the Frood-Stobie Open Pit. Mining at this open pit is nearing completion and underground production has been expanded to replace the open pit tonnage.

The Peñoles Mining Division has eight Mining Operations and in seven of them, flotation is used to concentrate the metal and mineral values. THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. His Observations on the Magda/en Islands is included in the New York State Museum Bulletin 149, seventh report of the Director, 1910.
