Large scale rhyolitic volcanism is an important process at some convergent plate margins because it leads to chemical differentiation of the upper.-crust and is responsible for the production of long lived near surface thermal anomalies; the Taupo Volcanic Zone is.a Quaternary example. The main features of the magmatic systems-of the zone. are the existence of large high level chambers containing homogeneous silicic magma which erupt at intervals of thousands to tens of thousands of years. Geochemical work on the deposits resulting from these eruptions has shown that with few exceptions the magmas have been remarkably uniform in their . composition throughout the history of the zone although individual batches with lifespans of the order of. one hundred thousand years can be recognised by subtle differences in trace element ratios. Basalt is a rare proportion of the rocks exposed at the surface but has played a major role as a medium for heat transfer and as an end member in chemical mixing processes.

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. My closest personal connection with the problems of rehabilitation comes from two years spent on a project at Weipa. At the beginning I am fairly certain that the engineers did not understand the mental processes of the ecologist they were dealing with. I am absolutely certain that the ecologist did not understand the minds of the engineers. This form of the two cultures problem is the root of some of the matters that lie behind this lecture. It is possible to establish a stabilising cover of vegetation on virtually any land surface, short of a cliff. While the biologist knows this he also knows that the physical and chemical nature of a given acre of land combines with climate to define quite sharply just what plants can be grown there. In the case of land after mining the range of plants may be quite limited. The engineer, and his masters in the accounting section, seem (in my experience) to expect that rehabilitation can be carried on with equal speed and facility in any location. This belief commonly leads to a situation where rehabilitation is not considered until mining is well under way. True, the mine must be proved as an assured profit- earner before money can be justified for the non-productive (to the miner) expense of rehabilitation. But when the miner finally starts rehabilitation he does not always get a convincing and speedy result. Furthermore, the failure may not be easy to overcome. This is even more likely to be the sequence of events if the miner wants, or is obliged, to specify the exact type of vegetation to be produced, e. g. commercial forest, pasture,' or the original native vegetation.

Passing a direct current through a jointed fine grained soft rock mass auses the movement of water by the process of electric-osmosis. There are other processes such as electrolysis which transport ions that interact with associated ions and can, in turn, be oxidised. This results in the dissolution products being transported towards the cathode electrode. In the cathode region the ferrous hydroxide is oxidised to ferric hydroxide %%ith consequent precipitation. The cracks and joints are current pathways, along which the ferric hydroxide is deposited. This deposition reinforces the joints and increases the shear strength. By adding calcium chloride to the anode, the rate of corrosion is increased with the concomitant increase of deposited ferric hydroxide along the joints. This, in turn, significantly increases the joint shear strength. The process is pervasive in that the current via the water paths travels through the crack and joint systems The result is that not only specific joints are reinforced but the cracks and mtciconnected voids are also reinforced.

Dr Claude Martin,Director General,WWF International The four quotes above well illustrate the challenges faced by companies and conservationists in attempting to achieve the societal goal of sustainable development. That this aspirational goal itself is far from clearly defined, although it has been widely accepted and endorsed by governments, business and civil society, exacerbates the challenges. Sustainable development has as its central thesis the integration of environmental, social and economic policy. Its attainment by business has been described John Elkington (1998) as the pursuit of the ætriple bottom lineÆ - the achievement of social and environmental targets, in addition to the traditional economic bottom line. It is self-evident that business is both competent and comfortable defining and measuring economic performance and reporting that performance to internal and external audiences. As long as information has been prepared according to the established standards of measurement and reporting of economic performance, all audiences can have confidence in its accuracy. Business does not enjoy the same competence and comfort with regard to social and environmental performance. This is no startling condemnation of business, any more than it is a criticism of governments, non-government organisations (NGOs) or academia. It is a statement of fact that the tools to allow for credible definition and reporting against the other two components of the ætriple bottom lineÆ have yet to be fully developed and are, therefore, far from being widely accepted. Crucial to achieving sustainability is the ability to measure progress toward the goal. The task is to develop means to define appropriate performance standards and to credibly measure and report company environmental and social performance against those standards.

Much of the data required for the evaluation of mine design is obtained from bore cores. It is essential to collect data that is useful and not to overlook features which might have adverse effects upon the mining practices and which might not be readily discernible to the untrained eye when examining bore cores. Interpretation of the data has progressed from the use of single-value properties, such as ultimate compressive strength or Young's modulus, to the utilisation of most measurable quantities. The simulation techniques used employ physical and mathematical models for prediction of mining conditions or strata behaviour. The application and capabilities of these methods to mine design are discussed.

Mineralogical information obtained from plant surveys is subject to errors, both due to sampling and experiment. To reduce these errors, and to ensure that information is consistent, a data reconciliation model has been developed for mineralogical data. Its capability includes mass balancing size data, total assays, assays within size-classes and liberation data. Unlike any other mass balance package, this package also allows reconciliation of the complex mineralogical information. For example, particles cannot simply be treated as binary, but consist of combinations of many minerals. Hence the distribution of mineralogical information is multidimensional and the mineralogical distributions are referred to as multiphase. In this paper, the different levels of mass balancing are explained, including how to mass balance liberation data. Furthermore a new technique based on probability theory can be used to infer distributions even when there is insufficient information to perform a mass balance, and this technique is also explained. Results for various stages are given.

It is the commonly held belief that, because the separation of liquids from solids takes place considerably faster in high rate thickeners than in conventional thickeners, high rate thickeners (HRT's) must use more flocculant than conventional thickeners. Data collected from a wide range of thickener users in Australasia and data presented in the literature is analysed. In addition, pilot plant data, with direct comparisons between HRT's and conventional thickeners, is presented. It is concluded that the flocculant consumption for both thickener types is in the same range.

Selenium is a minor constituent of the raw materials processed by the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited. Certain proposed raw materials contain higher levels of selenium, and these will create a problem with regard to the composition of liquid effluent discharged from the smelter. A method has been developed for removing selenium from the smelter circuit by the sulphation of the fume collected in the Acid Plant electrostatic-precipitators. It is planned that by treating 10-20% of the total dust arisings there will be a substantial reduction in the levels of selenium reporting in effluents when treating selenium-bearing raw materials. The selenium is recovered in elemental form.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. This data is intended to provide a quantative cost comparison of one 40 800 kg. pull down rotary blast hole drill versus two smalter drills in the 18 100 kg. pull down class. While this cost analysis is affected by blast design, this paper is not intended to be a treatise on blasting theory and therefore places more emphasis on costs than on blast design. All costs, prices and production rates in this paper are estimates and should be used for comparison purposes only. The drills are sized in order to maintain a production rate sufficient to stay ahead of a dragline that is excavating in an average overburden (sandstone and shale). The large drill will use 270mm bit and penetrate at a rate of 0.012 m/s (scheduled basis). The small drill will use 170mm bit and penetrate at a rate of 0.010 m/s (scheduled basis).

The method of supporting excavated roofs in underground coal mines by conventional roof bolting systems is challenged due to its shortcomings of being time-consuming and leading to possible unsafe installation. Though a few alternatives have been considered, the ultimate and most efficient bolting method has often been conceived as one using a self-drilling roof bolt, or a Rapid Face Bolting System (RFBS). The on-going Rapid Face Bolting Project undertaken by the University of Wollongong includes a special tubular bolt design.The tubular bolt designed for the RFBS is a "single-pass" bolt equipped with cutting tips used to drill a bolthole to accommodate the bolt. Different from that of the coring bit employed in geological site investigations, the principal design consideration for the tubular bolt is low cost associated with a small working life for the cutting tip.

Asian countries are now facing very crucial aspects of urban living under the recession of the economy. The current situation is such that those hard aspects may make the living standards worse and worse in the next century, unless proper measures are taken on the infrastructure for urban lives. More than half of the population in Asian countries are now living in cities. Nowadays, the socio-economic development of the Asian countries has been closely linked to the development of world economy because of the border-less economy system. The population inflow to big cities is inevitable as the Asian countries step into an industrialised economy. Such a tendency will be further accelerated when Asia becomes a centre of financial business in the 21st century. The government of any country has realised the situation very well. The United Nations has established a specific agency to solve the problems caused by the rapid urbanisation. This global agency for urbanisation is named United Nations Center for Human Settlement and it is so called Habitat. There are three Habitat offices in the world, Nairobi in Kenya, Santiago in Chile and Fukuoka in Japan. The activities of Habitat offices cover a wide field of issues such as housing, urban development, infrastructure and environment, etc. Habitat Fukuoka Office is serving Asia and Pacific in co-operation with the government offices concerned.

The concept of "profit" is implicit in the definition of an ore reserve. It is suggested that the flexible concept "economic" is more appropriate. This allows different economic considerations to be taken to account when determining what is ore at the feasibility study stage; during actual mining production; before mine closure; and from the viewpoint of the national economy. Economic factors which are highly variable, and largely beyond a mining enterprise's control, affect the economic exploitation of a mineral resource. Major economic factors include: metal prices; operating costs; the cost of original and replacement capital equipment; the cost of capital; taxation and royalties; inflation; exchange rates and the state of the world economy. The paper suggests why a careful quantification of the average value, trend, and variation from the trend of major economic factors should be made and how this will lead to a better definition of ore reserves. The paper also discusses the necessity of reappraising economic factors during the life of a mine in order to maximise the economic surplus and to minimise the wastage of natural, economic and human resources employed in mining.

The Bowen Basin of Queensland and the Hunter Valley of New South Wales are the two largest black coal producing areas in Australia. Mining activities require the availability of large on-lease storages for water and tailings. The legislative framework for the regulation of large dams is slightly different between the states. The paper provides a broad outline of the regulatory framework in each state, with particular reference to Queensland and New South Wales. In New South Wales, water storages and tailings dams are treated similarly by the regulator. Under the Queensland Water Act 2000, now proclaimed, referable dams are restricted to water supply dams the failure of which involves population at risk downstream. Tailings dams are excluded, being deemed hazardous waste dams regulated under the Environment Protection Act 1994. These storage facilities are required to include a ædesign storage allowanceÆ so that the possibility of spillway discharges is minimised. New South Wales is moving toward this requirement. A curious anomaly is emerging in Queensland: the legislative definition of hazardous waste û material resulting from the processing of minerals û does not extend to coal tailings since coal is not included in the definition of a mineral. The paper explores this and other ramifications for mining operations of the new legislation as well as general trends in criteria affecting the cost of providing water and tailings storages.

There are presently no suitable underground mine production scheduling optimisation models available for application to sublevel stope mining. Scheduling underground production for maximum return is therefore still a manual process, which generally involves scheduling production from the next available highest cash flow stope within the operational constraints of the project. In most mining operations, the scheduling problem is too large and complex to guarantee truly optimal results through manual scheduling. This paper reviews some general optimisation studies that have been proposed for underground hard rock mining. Furthermore, an example of a mixed integer programming model is presented for a small conceptual sublevel stoping operation. Comparative results of a schedule generated by a mixed integer programming (MIP) production scheduling model and a manually generated model on a nine stope example is presented. Results indicate that the potential benefits of the MIP production scheduling model for the purpose of maximising NPV are significant. Finally, a new constraint was formulated to limit multiple exposures of fill masses for use in an existing MIP production scheduling model. Testing of the formulation took place on the central stope of the nine stope example, which showed that the formulation performed its task without breaking other operational constraints.

The recent description provided by Scott (1981) of the Ardlethan alteration systems is of particular interest as it draws attention to the analogy between Ardlethan and the porphyry tin systems of Bolivia (Sillitoe et aI, 1975).During 1978-1979 a parallel study of the mineralization confirmed that the extensive alteration pattern relates to a series of breccia pipes which provide access channelways for the mineralizing solutions (Clarke, 1979). Many of the results reported by Scott are difficult to interpret without this concept and this short discussion is intended to provide additional perspective to the proposed porphyry tin model.The breccia pipe systems are centred upon each of the major mineralized zones (Wild Cherry, Carpathia, Stackpool and White Crystal) and with the exception of the White Crystal collapse breccia the major pipes are of the hydrothermal intrusive type. They range considerably in size and shape and at least two ages of formation are revealed by their cross cutting relationships at the Stackpool, Carpathia and Ardwest regions. Individual pipes or groups of pipes have distinctive alteration/infill characteristics and the entire system can be viewed as a complex porphyry tin system evolving with time. The recognition of pipes of different types and ages reveals a situation considerably more complex than suspected by Scott, and hence both the geochemical data and modelling require reinterpretation.For instance, the geochemical data contained within Tables 2 and 3 (Scott, 1981) relate to two separate breccia pipes which correspond to the South Cherry and Ardwest ore zones respectively. Although it is probable that both pipes are temporarily identical it is important that the geochemical data be viewed in context. The brecciation is extremely difficult to recognize and it is probable that the chemical compositions given represent mixtures of altered fragments and rock flour, together with material precipitated from solution as matrix, along microfractures, within small vughs, etc.

The evaluation programme and procedures develop- ed for Saindak porphyry copper-gold-silver- molybdenum deposits located in an isolated area in an extremely and region of Baluchistan are described in detail. Due to its isol .ted location, far removed from supply centres, harsh climate, paucity of water and non-availability of even unskilled labour, Saindak presented problems for which no ready made solution exist- ed. It is hoped that this Paper may be of some value to those in the LDCs who may wish to undertake similar ventures.
