The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

While magnetic surveys are the most common geophysical method used in mineral exploration, magnetics and geology remain to be fully integrated quantitatively in iron ore provinces. Although high-resolution aeromagnetic data has been collected over prospective areas of the Hamersley Province, much of the information in the data sets has hitherto not been fully exploited due to a lack of suitable interpretation methods. Recent advances in the processing and modelling of magnetics in highly magnetic terrains, constrained inversion and 3D visualisation and understanding the magnetic properties of banded iron formations and iron ores potentially create the capability to generate realistic 3D mapping of magnetite and hematite concentrations over large areas. Initial processing of conventional total magnetic intensity data produces true potential field maps that are unaffected by local perturbations of the regional geomagnetic field direction by intense local anomalies. The true potential field can be converted into vector and tensor components, each of which emphasises different structural features of the geology. Scalar quantities derived from these components simplify interpretation, using new methods, developed by CSIRO and elsewhere, that are less sensitive to magnetisation direction. Preliminary interpretations allow interpolation between mapped units and structures and evaluation of remanence and anisotropy effects. Accurate modelling requires rigourous treatment of self-demagnetisation and magnetic interaction effects. Semi-automated constrained inversion, combining magnetics with available geological information and other geophysical data, can be utilised to generate models of disposition of major magnetic units and the 3D magnetisation distribution within them. The final stage of interpretation is to exploit the understanding of magnetic properties (susceptibility, anisotropy and remanence) developed over many studies by CSIRO, the University of Western Australia and others to convert the interpreted magnetisation distributions into 3D maps of magnetite and hematite contents, which are the quantities of direct exploration interest.CITATION:Clark, D A, Foss, C A, Austin, J and Hillan, D, 2015. In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

Based upon specialised experience of rope mechanics spanning over 20 years, this paper reviews the processes of degradation and fatigue that are relevant to hoisting ropes in mines. The review is brought up to date with an account of the most recent work in this field, which identifies a torsional fatigue process and quantifies the impact of degradation upon the residual service life. A proper understanding of these processes is important in determining how different parameters of hoist design and operation interact to determine rope life. This knowledge is also important in informing decisions relating to rope discard based upon observed condition, as well is identifying the critical features that must be quantified reliably during inspection.

The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

The unique characteristics of the Target orebody and modernistic approach to mining present significant challenges and a concomitant high potential for new opportunities. The break-away from the traditional labour intensive mining methods improves both safety and productivity significantly. The intention of the paper is to illustrate the application of well known mining methods to the particular requirements of a complex orebody at depth. The evolutionary process followed to establish the final mining method design provides insight behind the finished product, and the modern approach to the planning and service principles equips the reader with a suite of mining engineering ideas.

extremely powerful tools for building predictive and generative models. ML can be used for building highly accurate regression and classification models. But without careful data science and statistical analysis, a regression or classification model could be highly biased and completely wrong – and we may not even realise. An example rock density estimation task will be used to illustrate the potential gains and possible pitfalls in using ML and AI in Mineral Resource estimation. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing! For most simple regression or classification problems, very little. For density estimation, using the global mean may be all that is possible, but the resource classification would need to reflect the uncertainty in global estimation of tonnage. Everything! From data collection and measurement, from selecting ML and AI techniques and designing the analysis workflow to our own cognitive bias. The things that could go wrong are vast and may include but not limited to asking the wrong question, not asking questions, data bias, measurement errors, insufficient data coverage, not collecting the right variables, not collecting enough observations, collecting clustered samples, unbalanced data, filtering out data without reason (outliers), clipping data (outliers), relying on automatic feature selection, including irrelevant variables, excluding relevant variables, geological interpretation, changing context, blindly following best practice, splitting small data sets, subsetting large data sets, using the wrong tool for the task, insufficient budget to complete the analysis, not allowing enough time for testing and experimentation (the science), focusing too much on building the model (the engineering), not learning from the data, our assumptions, our preconceptions, and our skill. This paper will explore the question of how training regression models to predict rock density are affected by gaps in the data (missing observations and missing variables). What could possibly go wrong?

The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".

A major problem with many items of underground equipment is that they have either been converted or adapted from surface equipment, or that they have been designed and assembled in comfortable offices and factories with adequate lighting, specialised tools, and ample space. As soon as they are in use underground in cramped spaces maintenance frequently becomes difficult, parts are awkward to change, and a whole range of accidents can happen.Similarly, ingenious operators discover a whole range of uses for which the equipment was not designed, such as using a loader bucket for a work platform, or scaling backs with it.Design modifications of equipment and removal of hazardous components that can trap limbs is expensive when the dangers are discovered in operation, sometimes posthumously, and it is not surprising that workers compensation insurance premiums are high. The cheapest place to ensure that equipment is safe is in the design office, where the operator should be considered first, rather than being added to a purpose built machine as an afterthought.

The northern Drummond and Bowen basins region represents one of AustraliaÆs most prospective areas for epithermal vein and stockwork style gold deposits, with both low and high sulfidation epithermal mineralisation known in the region. 3D-GIS reconstructions, numerical and probabilistic modelling (UDEC, FLAC 3D and WofE) are used here to develop a better understanding of the controls operating on the mineral systems of the region and are aimed at enhancing predictive capabilities. Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

Effective minesite water management requires that this issue be treated as a risk management exercise. The management process is generally far from simple and by necessity must involve a range of personnel covering a siteÆs commercial, operational and environmental interests and responsibilities. The challenge to be collectively faced by these stakeholders is to strike the correct balance between risk and cost. On the other hand, the challenge to be faced by technical services support personnel is to provide stakeholders with information in a format that they can use with confidence. This paper presents the application of continuous operational simulation (OPSIM) modelling techniques to establish appropriate risk profiles for minesite operations. It is necessary that the format of these risk profiles be generic and equally applicable for defining the risk of occurrence for a relatively comprehensive range of activities û eg from of a non-compliant discharge, to the risk of failure to meet production targets. What is more, the profiles need to be quantitatively based and capable of reflecting change in system response to varied operational or management strategies. The techniques presented in this paper are based around a key assumption that long-term records of the climate contain within them sets of sequences that are representative of what can be expected in the future û that is, the droughts, floods, cyclones, good years and bad, long or short, and everything in between. Therefore, if these historical records are run through an OPSIM model for a particular site, then the simulated operational characteristics can be taken as being representative of what can be expected in the future, in the long-term. This lends itself to statistical analysis and translation into the required risk based format. Water Solutions Pty Ltd have been working with Capricorn Coal Management to develop a relatively comprehensive OPSIM model of their operations at German Creek Mine, Central Queensland. Outcomes from the modelling have been used in recent times to provide mine management with risk-based guidelines for both securing and containing mine water inventories. One of the more interesting tasks has been to establish risk based inventory levels that, if reached, would trigger the immediate implementation of a contract for the desalination and re-use of mine water, at predefined rates. Also, lead-time warning of the occurrence of a possible trigger is of importance to operational and commercial planning. To service this requirement the OPSIM model is regularly used to produce lead-time estimates to defined levels of confidence. Case studies of these, and other, applications of the OPSIM model at German Creek Mine are presented in this paper and serve to demonstrate an effective methodology for practical risked based water management.

Underground mine planning requires an optimal stope layout as a prerequisite for the definition of an optimal production schedule. The procedure to generate an optimal stope layout considers an orebody model and economic parameters as inputs. It evaluates all possible combinations of mining blocks and creates a set of stopes by satisfying the physical mining and geotechnical constraints. Thus, the procedure is computationally complex, and generating a solution to the problem is a challenge. This paper presents an implementation of a new heuristic algorithm that solves the stope layout problem. In two case studies, the algorithm achieves 11.2 per cent and 22.5 per cent superior solutions to the industrially available maximum value neighbourhood approach.CITATION:Sandanayake, D S S, Topal, E and Asad, M W A, 2014. The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.
