Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.

The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.

Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. The Zapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level. However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. For many years, in numerous settings, the need for a language-fair and culture-fair assessment test has been identified as a significant issue for employment and selection for training of remote indigenous community members. Pivotal to the successful implementation and application of such a test is for it to gain the acceptance and trust of the local indigenous communities as a fair assessment and for it to provide organisations with an accurate predictive tool. However, when western tests have been used with indigenous groups, inherent language and cultural bias have had a significant negative impact in terms of community acceptance. These have also affected the accuracy of performance predictability. The Queensland Test was developed to overcome these problems. Originally developed for use in Papua New Guinea, it reduced training failures by 20 per cent. Later refinements were made and it was used with Aboriginal Australians. Since 2002, assessment tests have been used by the Freeport mine in West Papua to support their recruitment, selection and training processes for the local indigenous community, the Seven Suku Tribes. The initial process included the application of standard æwesternÆ assessment tests, which did not provide valid selection predictions, with community members and elders describing these tests as unfair and the organisation being concerned that the results were not accurate. A trial of the Queensland Test was conducted and a high correlation was established between the performance of FreeportÆs current Seven Suku employees as assessed by their managers and their Queensland Test results. Based on the results of this pilot the Queensland Test was successfully implemented as the primary selection tool for potential employees from these local indigenous groups. The testing materials and method gained community trust and support, with tribal elders describing the Queensland Test as a fair and suitable selection tool for their community members. Such results have sparked an interest within the Australian Mining industry, with similar results being reported from a recent trial. The Queensland Test has been implemented at a major site in Queensland and is being investigated for use elsewhere.

Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.

The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

The high temperature processing of nickel laterite ore is currently dominated by the Rotary Kiln- Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology. The ratio of SiO2/MgO (S/M) in the ore is one of the critical parameters that determines the success of the RKEF process. Incompatible S/M ratios in the ore can cause aggressive chemical interaction between the slag and MgO refractory. The slag-refractory interaction at conditions relevant to nickel laterite ore smelting was investigated in the present study. Synthetic mixtures representing the slag compositions of nickel laterite ore smelting were prepared by mixing MgO, SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, and Fe and heating the mixtures in steel containers at 1300°C under an argon atmosphere for 3 hrs. Pure MgO crucible were used as containment material in the melting process of the mixtures to represent the MgO refractory. The kinetics of the slagrefractory reaction were investigated using samples with selected initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 (wt/wt) (with constant CaO = 3 wt per cent, Al2O3 = 5 wt per cent, FeO = 10 wt per cent) by performing melting at 1500°C in MgO crucibles for 5, 30, and 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. The effect of the S/M ratio in slag on the slag-refractory interaction was also investigated by performing melting of mixtures with different initial S/M ratios of 1.75, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 (wt/wt) in MgO crucibles at 1500°C for 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. After the melting process, each sample was quenched in water, mounted in resin, ground, polished, and coated. The interaction between the slags and MgO refractory was then evaluated by analysing the polished samples using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.0 thermochemical software were performed based on the experimental slag compositions, refractory, and conditions to support the evaluation process. The results show that a higher S/M ratio in slag leads to a higher tendency for the refractory component to dissolve into the slag. A higher S/M ratio in slag also leads to an increasing extent of solid-state diffusion of iron oxide into the remaining refractory grains. The dissolution of MgO into the slag is rapid; the MgO concentration in the final slag increased by 2.4 wt per cent and 5.7 wt per cent at initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 wt/wt, respectively, within 5 and 30 mins of the melting process.

The local cumulative distribution function (lcdf) of a selective mine unit (SMU) can be estimated by conditional simulations using the statistics derived from the sample points, generating multiple equally probable scenarios. Conditional simulations permit the evaluation of the lcdf at any support, taking into account the spatial variability, ie the variogram, and the two statistical moments, mean and variance, of the conditioning samples. The SMU ore losses and dilution depend on the mining method and mining equipment selectiveness that, in its turn, depends on the predicted block size. A new approach to predict ore loss and dilution was developed in this study. Monte Carlo simulation is used to randomly generate a grade value derived from the lcdf at the mining stage (Zs_mc(t)) in order to make a decision about the SMU destination, ie processing plant (ORE) or waste dump (WASTE). If Zs_mc(t) is lower or equal to the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is ORE and, conversely, if Zs_mc(t) is higher than the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is WASTE. Considering these binary destinations ORE/WASTE, at the mining time t, and combining each realisation of the simulated random function Zcs_i (X), there are four possibilities for each SMU simulated value: 1. the block was simulated as ore and is actually ore (OO), 2. the block was simulated as ore and is actually waste (OW),3. the block was simulated as waste and is actually ore (WO), and 4. the block was simulated as waste and is actually waste (WW).The dilution factor is given by possibility 3 (WO), while the ore loss factor is represented by possibility 2 (OW). These results comprise the classical classification and reconciliation plots used in the mining industry. The new procedure proposed in this paper is based on the use of all the equally probable simulations to define the ore loss and dilution factors. An application of this methodology was carried out at Vale's iron mine in Brazil. The grade of silica was simulated and 50 multiple equally probable 3D models were generated. The mean and the standard deviation of the ore tonnage (OO + WO) for the 50 realisations, was 233 Mt and 0.5 Mt, respectively. The mean grade increased for the diluted ore (OO + WO) as well as their respective coefficient of variation (CV). The CV increases from 62 per cent in the undiluted ore (OO), to 101 per cent in the ore, considering the dilution factor (OO + WO). The mean ore loss (OW) was 10 Mt and the waste tonnage dilution (WO) was 9 Mt.

High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. Understanding the relationship between deformation events, fluid pressure evolution and the partitioning of strain is paramount in understanding the distribution of gold and for focusing on future target areas.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Blenkinsop, T G and Nugus, M J, 2013. THE object of this paper is to offer some suggestions to assist metallurgists to supervise the operations of flotation plants. We do not yet thoroughly understand what "flotation" is or "why minerals float" and all attempts that have been made to explain the phenomena have been based on theory or imagination, and have not been capable of substantiation by practical demonstration, or even by laboratory tests; but it is wellknown that particular minerals will float in a liquid under certain specified conditions, and that some other minerals will not float under those conditions, and that, if a mixture of the two classes of minerals be subjected to those conditions, there will be separation of the minerals, of which one class will float and the other will remain unfloated as a residue. The duty of the flotation expert is to so control the operations and the conditions of the liquor as to obtain the best commercial result from the ore he is treating. The chief controlling factors in a flotation plant appear to fall under the following eight headings, all of which are important:1. Crushing.2. Rate and regularity of feed.3. Density of pulp.4. Temperature.5. Addition agents.6. Condition of circuit liquor.7. Agitation.8. Aeration.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of milling and flotation circuit configuration on flotation performance of platinum-bearing ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. Pilot plant trials were conducted at Lonmin Platinum using a highly automated pilot plant (a floatability characterisation test rig or FCTR), with a pilot ball mill, a stirred media detritor and an ISA mill. Different milling and flotation configurations were tested, without changing the overall grind size distribution or flotation residence time from one circuit to the next. Results from the pilot plant tests indicate that staged grinding, with intermediate flotation stages, can achieve significant performance benefits in comparison to a single grind-float circuit, for an equivalent overall grind and flotation residence time. These findings are explored qualitatively, in terms of the recovery and transportation of fast, slow and non-floating platinum-bearing particles through the various milling and flotation stages, and an optimum strategy for the separation of this type of ore is explored and discussed.

In 2021 the ports of Port Hedland and Dampier in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia handled 900 Mt of iron ore. This ore was produced in the Hamersley’s mines and transported by trains to the ports for subsequent export. Dust, which is generally considered to be particles less than 100 μm in diameter, is generated at all steps in the supply chain. Whilst all dust may have potential impacts on human health and mangroves and buildings a proportion of the dust is classed as respirable (PM10) dust, which consists of particles <10 μm in diameter. In 2021, in response to the community concern with iron ore dust, CSIRO commissioned an internal study to characterise and benchmark the dustiness of the different ores and to develop targeted strategies to minimise dust impacts, without affecting other iron properties, such as stickiness during transportation. A specific concern is that that the dust in the PM10 fraction may contain significant amounts of particulates, such as free silicates which may have health implications for the workers and residents. This study provided detailed mineral and chemical characterisation of the dust generated from the railed fine ore products for five generic Australian ore types: Australian Channel iron Deposit (ACID), Australian Brockman (AB), Australian Marra Mamba (AMM), Australian Pilbara (AP) and Australian magnetite (AM). The dust from these fine ore products were compared to that generated from a sample of Brazilian Hematite (BH) type ore fines. The ores were evaluated for their physical, chemical and mineralogy properties, dust generating potential and understandings of the relationship between the dustiness of iron ores and their physiochemical properties. The size distributions of the railed fine ore products were determined and a suite of analyses were conducted on subsamples of total (-106 μm) and fine (-38 μm) dust. For all the ores, the total dust fraction contains less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than did the bulk ore. The fine dust fraction contained even less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than the total dust fraction. This suggests that the iron ore dust contains more clay and potentially free silica than does the bulk ore. These findings were supported by optical and Scanning electron microscopy analyses of the samples. Dustiness measurements were made for each of the different ores (-106 μm) to investigate the relationship of dustiness of various iron ores with their physiochemical properties and assess their responses to dust suppression by the application of water sprays.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at this important conference attended by aspiring mining professionals, some of whom will become the leaders of the mineral resources industry that forms the solid foundation of AustraliaÆs past and that will fuel the exciting growth of AustraliaÆs future.I want to briefly touch on the history of our business, then look at the opportunities that exist in the contract mining industry and finally comment on what the educators need to consider in their curriculum to meet the needs of our business. Byrnecut started out as an idea in early-1987 developed by a group of four mining people. At the time the industry was on the high end of a mining boom, the era of the Bonds, Connels, Skases and so on. Riding on this wave of euphoria we borrowed $600 000 from the National Australia Bank and, without having enough knowledge to lose sleep over the potential risks, started business in mid-1987. The euphoria quickly evaporated with the 1987 October stock market crash. The bank pulled our overdraft, equipment finance rates increased to over 20 per cent per annum and my house was mortgagedseveral times over. The business learning curve was extreme for a young mining engineer who had developed his trade in the relatively sheltered environment of a large public mining house, namely WMC. We were somewhat bitter that the banks had done a runner. We were a private company, backing the business with personal assets with our shoulders to the wheel, whilst the Bonds of the world had theirnoses in the trough ripping off mum and dad shareholders. All of this had a sobering effect, namely keep your feet on the ground, stick to the knitting, work hard and worship cash flow. Since that stressful but adrenaline pumping beginning the company now employs over 600 people and is now working for major mining houses at over a dozen locations in Australia, east Africa and WesternEurope and the National bank is again our banker. On this basis I consider myself qualified for the subject of this speech.

One of the key aspects to develop sustainable metallurgical production is to ensure that the predictive power of thermodynamic tools is brought up to a new level of accuracy and reliability. Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of&apos;search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques.
