Self-cleaning fluidised bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. Recent advances in equipment design have increased the scope of application to include indirect heat transfer in slurry environments, including fouling, scaling and viscous slurries. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve heat transfer problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials may be used.

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag. The further expansion of New Zealand Steel's primary steelmaking capacity to replace the currently imported hot and cold flat rolled products is under consideration. The requirement to produce about 600 000 tonnes of steel slabs will be an opportunity to further modify iron and steel making plant and processes to optimise the economics. The conceptual and preliminary engineering selection of options is described.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

The engineering properties of soils and tailings often exhibit significant anisotropy. One area where this has been well documents is undrained shear strength. Materials sheared in directions close to the principal stress direction in situ, i.e. triaxial compression, typically exhibit higher undrained strengths than those sheared in other directions such as simple shear. Importantly, along the most common critical failure surfaces relevant to tailings stability, whether primarily through tailings or a critical foundation layer, saturated materials are generally much closer to the simple shear loading direction than triaxial compression. Therefore, testing undrained shear strength of tailings or foundation soils in triaxial compression is likely to result in overestimation of the relevant strengths for design. Although these issues have repeatedly documented in the geotechnical literature for over three decades, they are not appreciated sufficiently across our industry. In an attempt to address and highlight these issues, a review is carried out of historical reference to the importance of simple shear loading. Attention is then drawn to the techniques applied in three recent post-failure investigations, where simple shear testing was applied. Finally, some relevant laboratory test results from a recent project in which the author was involved are outlined.CITATION:Reid, D, 2018. HPGRs (high pressure grinding rolls) have been developed within the last decades for energy efficient processing of a wide variety of ores. Special interest has been raised by projects increasing the capacities of processing plants by installing HPGRs prior to ball mills. Bond ball mill tests have been used for decades as a base for ball mill dimensioning in mineral circuits. For final CAPEXOPEX considerations of the processing circuit, one key question is about the level of grinding energy split between HPGR and downstream grinding stages. This is especially interesting if the downstream process comprises multiple grinding stages combined with separation steps. The paper presents investigations on grinding energy consumption, size distribution and microfracturing of HPGR products, which affect the efficiency of the whole comminution and sorting process.

The final arsenic bearing waste products at the majority of metallurgical and chemical enterprises are cakes in which arsenic is present in the form of calcium arsenate. Burial of cakes demands construction of special burial sites and does not guarantee reliable protection from arsenic penetration into the ground and surface waters. Under laboratory conditions we developed technology for processing calcium arsenate cakes with obtaining low toxic products suitable for long-term storage, meeting environmental requirements. The investigations have shown that thermal processing of briquetted mixtures of cakes containing 15 - 20 per cent weight of pyrite under the temperature of 873 - 923¦K during 45 - 60 minutes gives briquettes sufficiently hard for transportation and long-term storage. Arsenic, under high sulphidisation temperature is bonded into low solubility non-volatile iron sulphide bearing compounds having chemical properties similar to the natural arsenic compounds. Solubility of the obtained products in neutral, acid and alkaline media was investigated during long period of time (three to 12 months). It was determined that arsenic content in the solutions did not exceed the norms for cultural and welfare basins and fish-ponds.

Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions intended to compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by development projects. The use of biodiversity offsets in the context of mining has significant potential for enabling mining to take place in areas with biodiversity values, where it would not otherwise be possible to meet the relevant legal tests under the Resource Management Act 1991, and potentially the Conservation Act 1987. This paper looks at the concept of biodiversity offsets (and environmental compensation generally) both in New Zealand and internationally, and considers how lessons learned overseas may be adapted for this country. In New Zealand the practice of biodiversity offsets and environmental compensation is ad hoc and variable. The challenge with biodiversity offsets is to establish a transparent and coherent means of identifying the overall priorities and objectives of adopting such an approach, as well as how the relevant values are measured and protected. Establishing a methodology for quantifying biodiversity value, and the need for clear policy guidelines on biodiversity offsets are identified as key areas in need of wider discussion.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

Lightning Ridge, Australia, is the largest opal producing area in the world. Most opal is mined from shallow underground mines by individuals or small partnerships with the industry having been protected from large-scale development to date. The safety performance of opal mining has lagged both general mining industry standards and community expectations. The application of geotechnical analysis to the opal fields has the potential to considerably reduce injuries and fatalities. With consideration of the local culture, preliminary geotechnical analysis has been applied to some current methods of work utilised at Lightning Ridge. Practical solutions have been advocated and are presented in this paper. Improvements to safety generated by these practical solutions indicate that further geotechnical research at Lightning Ridge is warranted and would be beneficial.

The Trident Gold Deposit has been successfully developed by Alacer Gold (formerly Avoca Resources Limited) into a 1.3 Mt/a operation in the space of four years from discovery to first gold pour (2008). The current in situ Resource for Trident is estimated to be 5 900 000 t @ 5.0 g/t for 940 000 ounces at a cut-off of 1 g/t or 2 g/t depending on ore style. Production to date (Alacer and previous owners) is in excess of 500 000 ounces. The deposit lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, where it is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, midway between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz). Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (Eastern Zone, Western Zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro; and thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed primarily at sheared lithological contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies. The initial interpretation of the Trident Deposit was based on steeply-dipping structures controlling the zones of mineralisation, with much of the targeting and drill-testing aimed at this style of orebody. Subsequent exposure of the orebodies has identified a series of shallow-east dipping mineralised systems (interpreted to be large reverse shears) that at their intersection with the steep-dipping structures cause significant gold enrichment. It is postulated that both orientations are primary fluid pathways with the intersection between the two resulting in zones with significantly high concentrations of gold mineralisation (in excess of 300 000 ounces). This new understanding on ore controls at Trident has identified that the thin lode-style shear-hosted laminated veins are continuous for over 1700 m along strike as they step en echelon down-plunge. In addition, a repetition and periodicity to the intersection between these steep dipping lode-style systems and the shallow-dipping mineralised zones (estimated to be 700 - 900 m down-plunge) has been identified which has considerably increased the down-plunge potential of the Trident Deposit.

Mining and metals projects have tended to increase in both scope and cost to a point where many projects are Droperly designated as superprojects. Specialist engineer- constructors have developed organisations and systems to provide project management services during the design and construct phase of large projects. However, the engineer-constructor is also required to provide a wide spectrum of services during the evolution of large projects prior to the construction phase. Some common phases of pre-construction evolution are identified together with the associated types of specialised services which may be required. A project management team approach is described which has been developed for the design and construct phase. It is suggested that a modified matrix organisation could be adapted to the provision of special- ised services as well as to project management for ore-construction phases of the project.
