The mining and concentration operations of New Zealand Steel have been carried out initially from the Waikato North Head (WNH) deposit since 1969 and subsequently from the Taharoa deposit since 1972. Over the years the WNH operation has produced about 1.2 million tonnes of concentrate which has been converted into steel, while total exports to the Japanese Steel Industry from Taharoa reached five million tonnes in February of this year. Recent expansion plans both in domestic steel production and in the ironsand concentrate export market have made it necessary for the company to look closely at, among other areas, the mineral processing of the titaniferous ironsands in both deposits. This paper deals with the recent test work carried out at WNH and Taharoa on the use of the cone concentrator unit as a primary gravity concentrating unit ahead of the magnetic separation stages and as a cleaner concentrator following the primary magnetic separation.

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. This paper is concerned with the influence of engineering geology on design of Wall Control Blasts. In the Introduction, the Blast Management Framework and the Blast Design Requirements classification system (previously developed by the author) is drawn upon to set the context. Blasting objective for all wall control blasts involves both profile and damage control. Four classes of approaches for blast design are outlined and briefly discussed. Five distinct wall control blasting techniques are summarised. The general relationship between geology and blast design is explored in the paper. Influence of geology on pre-split and post-split design and blasting direction is highlighted. Wall damage modelling from the closest row of blastholes is also introduced using the Analytical Damage Model (ADM). The relationship of rock properties and explosive selection and in particular the Mach wave generation is introduced to assist blast designer in this regard. Finally a Conceptual Model that relates vibration, damage and rock mass condition has been presented along with some applications that have been undertaken by the developer. Eight conclusions have been formulated based on extensive work in this area and the current study.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. Gold was discovered at Waihi in 1878. In 1987 the modern Martha Mine opened in the middle of the town of Waihi. Newmont Waihi Gold as the current licence holder has been operating the mine since 2000. The current open pit was scheduled to stop production in mid 2006. An underground mine is currently being developed to the east of the town.   In 2001 serious subsidence issues from historical underground mine workings outside the mining licence and the forecast closure of the open pit acted as a catalyst for the development of new communication initiatives.   In this context Newmont Waihi Gold and the Hauraki District Council initiated a community consultation process with the people of Waihi. The Waihi Community Consultation Committee (WCCC) was established in May 2003. After an initial brief to act as a forum for community participation in closure and rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, the group quickly took on a much more proactive role working towards the long-term social, environmental, cultural, economic and spiritual sustainability of Waihi.   In the course of over three years of meetings all groups represented on the committee have presented their views, developed ideas and established an organisational structure to bring those ideas to fruition. The challenge now is to work together to consolidate likely options, seek sources of funding, produce business proposals and implement the plan for the future of Waihi.   This paper backgrounds the experience to date and describes the outcomes of the process. For more detail on process considerations this paper should be read in conjunction with Part C by process facilitators, T Clark and S Stewart. A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control is complex and depends on many dynamic process variables. Good control strategies ensure that a mill is operating as close to optimal as possible, resulting in significant economic benefits to an operation. Pueblo Viejo, a gold mine in the Dominican Republic, has been actively improving their control strategies since start-up in 2012, and one of these initiatives was to install an acoustic monitoring system on the SAG mill. The data from the system is used to optimise the mill’s performance by limiting the time the mill is either running too quiet or too loud. The lower limit is an indication that the charge in the mill is too high for efficient breakage or that the mill speed is too low and grinding media are not striking the toe of the charge. Conversely, when the acoustic emissions from the mill are too high, this can indicate that the balls are striking above the toe of the charge, resulting in inefficient grinding and excessive liner and lifter wear. Adjusting mill operating conditions to keep acoustic emissions in the ‘sweet spot’ between these limits results in more efficient grinding.Pueblo Viejo installed a Metso SmartEar™ to monitor the acoustic emissions of their SAG mill in January 2013. This system has been installed on many mills around the world and is specifically designed for optimising SAG mill control. One system output is the impact counter which measures steel-on-steel impacts on the mill shell. The impact counter uses both frequency and time domain analysis to approximate the number of ball impacts per minute. This method of analysis excludes parts of the sound signal not associated with steel-on-steel impacts and gives an accurate measure of this critical control parameter. After the acoustic system was installed, Pueblo Viejo collected data to determine the upper and lower limits for the impact count variable. The live data is available to the mill operators and it is used as one of the key operating variables to control the mill.Through continuous improvement and the use of advanced technologies like SmartEar™, Pueblo Viejo are improving the control and operation of their SAG mill, resulting in reduced liner wear, more efficient mill performance and optimised energy consumption. Renison Mine was developed as the first all diesel mine in Australia. The foresight of the early planners in committing the Mine to Decline access has paid dividends in the past two decades with Renison Mine establishing itself as one of the most productive underground mines in the world. The excellent productivity has also resulted from the development of mining equipment technology, both on the part of the equipment suppliers and through the coordination of the Mining, Automotive and Technical Design Sections at Renison Mine. Constant improvements in truck and loader design, the design of specific equipment to carry out specialized tasks such as installation of services, scaling and ground support and the conversion to electrically powered equipment have been ongoing at Renison. Currently, larger scale trucks are being investigated for ore and waste haulage due to increased haulage distances and production requirements. It appears as though an articulated low profile truck of around 50 tonnes capacity may provide the short term solution based on the performance data available.

As part of the current NERDDC funded project studying Dragline/Hopper/ Crusher/Conveyor systems for overburden removal, an investigation was carried out to assess the feasibility of automating the swing-to-dump phase of the dragline digging cycle in order to main- tain consistent performance of spotting the bucket above the hopper prior to dumping. The study involved design of automatic position controls for the hoist, drag and swing drives and simulation of detailed mathe- matical models of the three electromechanical systems and their associated electrical control schemes. The design of the hoist and drag systems to position the bucket in the boom plane is relatively straightforward. Simulation results show fast and accurate performance, with no evidence of interaction between the two drive systems through the ropes. The design of the swing position control system involves special strate- gies to cater for variable inertia and to damp the pendulum oscillations of the bucket. The use of a bucket pendulum model and variable dynamic compensation embedded within the feedback control loop, along with optimal speed/angle slowdown trajectories, has yielded fast and damped positioning responses under simulation.

The basic make-up of the majority of currently produced bulk explosives has changed little in the last 20 years. These explosives would be described as mature in a life cycle analysis. Therefore these explosive products and the practical rules for their use are well understood and well established. In recent years there has been interest in low density explosives, predominantly due to ammonium nitrate shortages and the associated increase in the cost of explosives. In the use of low density explosives some of the practical rules for the more commonly used bulk explosives do not apply. Therefore a shift in the thinking among users is required. At a number of mines low density explosives have been trialled or are being used, utilising the practical rules that apply to bulk explosive products. This has led to poor blast results in many situations. These poor blast results have often then led to a reduction in the use of low density explosives at the mine. This reduction does not acknowledge the advantages that can be gained from this product in the area of reduced cost of mining. This paper looks at low density explosives and discusses how and why these products work. Included in the paper are some practical ideas and examples of how low density explosives can be effectively used at the mine site.

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

An Australian Working Group has been compiling a guide for operators to use in order to improve the efficacy of their routine and non-routine sampling tasks within their coal preparation process. The guide focuses on unit operations within the process, and not conveyor belts or transfer stations that are adequately covered by the existing Standard ISO 13909.Representative sampling of unit operations is generally an after-thought following plant construction, whether that be a result of oversight, or more commonly, capital cost minimisation during initial construction. Minimising capital cost by avoiding adequate sampling systems is generally a poor decision, since the result is a process that cannot be adequately measured, meaning that it cannot be adequately managed and optimised.The use of the term ‘guide’ rather than ‘standard’ is intentional. Practical means of sampling unit operations within existing plants generally relies on a compromise between sample representativity (minimisation of bias) and sampling feasibility. The guide does not endorse poor sampling practice, but instead offers practical guidance to overcome, to the extent reasonably possible, real-life limitations.When it comes to sampling any particular process, it is almost always necessary to make a professional judgement as to whether or not the proposed samples are likely to be sufficiently representative such that the sampling will be worthwhile. Such judgement needs to be exercised by personnel who understand the principles of sampling, as they apply to the stream being sampled. There are many circumstances where available methods for sampling of a particular stream will be meaningless, and in such circumstances analytical data from that sampling will only serve to propagate poor decision-making.This paper outlines the approach for the guide, the areas it covers and the approaches adopted for different types of unit operations and associated equipment configurations.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Docherty, J, 2017. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O.
