In a company's quest for financing the development of a new mine, it will make calls on stockbroking houses and banks. The choice of the best-fit broker or banker is of great importance, and in the case of the miner, this is a house that has an intimate understanding of the mining industry, particularly one that has a solid staff complement of personnel with operating mine experience at a senior level. The most important document that the company will present to support its financing request will be the Feasibility Study. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. Rothschild Australia Limited assists its client companies by supplying a detailed framework so that they will be in a position give the bank the information it needs to complete its technical `due diligence' study within a mutually agreed time. Successful management of geotechnical risk at a mining operation is more than just having a good ground control management plan or using advanced numerical modelling and the latest monitoring technologies. The fundamental requirements for effective geotechnical risk management include identification of potential failure modes, identifying and implementing appropriate controls, and demonstrating the effectiveness of those controls. Effective geotechnical risk management requires an integrated approach by confirming that appropriate risk management systems have been identified and implemented (management plans, procedures etc), and that these systems are executed consistently in the field across all working areas. Development of a thorough integrated auditing process executed by an experienced team of technical subject matter experts with substantial operational knowledge, provides a more complete picture of catastrophic hazard management. Following consistent evaluation criteria allows benchmarking of systems and implementation compliance between the sites being audited, and the results can then be ranked against other operations in an industry database.

The opportunities offered by an increasingly volatile world invite the international consultant or engineering services contractor to broaden attitudes, diversify interests, expand capabilities, retain and develop specialist skills and base judgements upon sound principles and solid experience. The wide-ranging scope of this review reflects such a change but the topics of discussion are not intended to be exhaustive or to detract from many other current developments.The subject of environmental protection, effluent control and pollution prevention is a primary consideration in the application of many mineral processing technologies but is not covered here. There is an array of developments relating to noxious gas emissions and toxic wastes and the paramount importance of this matter justifies comprehensive conferences dedicated solely to the application of suitable measures. This review concentrates therefore on the main stream processing techniques for the primary recovery of values.

Thiosulphate is an attractive alternative reagent to cyanide for processing gold ores. It is relatively cheap and non-toxic, forms relatively strong gold and silver complexes, and readily leaches gold ores in ammoniacal solutions, catalysed by Cu(II). It is particularly suited to carbonaceous ores where the recovery of gold by cyanide is poor. However research over the past 20 years has identified a number of issues and impediments that must be understood or overcome before an overall process can be demonstrated as practical and economic for typical oxidised gold ores. This paper reviews our current understanding of thiosulphate chemistry and mechanism of gold dissolution, and discusses the stability of thiosulphate and polythionates. It then reviews the results of leaching various gold ores that have been reported in the literature, discusses gold recovery options, and considers environmental and toxicity issues. Some of the issues that require further research include decreasing the oxidation of thiosulphate by Cu(II) or other oxidants, increasing the extraction of gold compared to cyanide, and understanding the variation in gold recovery between ores. More work is also required to minimise the effect of polythionates on gold recovery using resins or alternative absorbents, to improve the elution of copper and gold from resins, and to recycle or minimise the concentration of reagents.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance in terms of produced ore grades and quantity and extraction process efficiency often deviate from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.With the development of modern information and communication technology over the last decade, a flood of data about different aspects of the production process is available in a real-time manner. For example, sensor technology enables online characterisation of geochemical, mineralogical and physical material characteristics on conveyor belts or at working faces. The ability to utilise this additional information and feed it back into reserve block models and planning assumptions opens up new opportunities to continuously control the decisions made in production planning to increase resource recovery and process efficiency. This leads to a change in paradigm from a discontinuous method to near real-time reserve reconciliation and model updating, which calls for suitable modelling and optimisation methodologies to quantify prior knowledge in the reserve model, process and integrate information from different sensor sources, back propagate the gain in information into reserve models and efficiently optimise operational decisions in real-time.This paper introduces the concept of an integrated closed-loop framework for real-time reserve management, incorporating sensor-based material characterisation, geostatistical modelling under uncertainty, modern data assimilation methods for sequential model updating and mining system simulation and optimisation. The base metal industry mines and processes hundreds of million tonnes of ore per annum to produce saleable products and large tonnages of waste by-products such as tailings. These ores usually contain less than 1 wt per cent of toxic elements (As, Sb, Bi, Cd, Se, Te, Hg, etc), which are subsequently treated with the other components in the ore during the production of concentrate through to saleable metal products. The deportments of minor elements across the various unit operations of a process flow sheet do not normally receive the attention that the major elements receive. However, these minor elements can have a major influence on the quality of the products as well as an economic and environmental impact. Therefore, a high degree of control over their deportments is a key step in reducing their dispersion in the biosphere. Ongoing work at CSIRO has been examining minor element deportments across unit processes used for smelting and refining and the options for early removal of minor elements, as well as methods for safe disposal of some toxic elements. This paper provides an overview of the R&D activities undertaken at CSIRO to develop tools and methodologies for improved management of minor elements during the processing of sulfide ores.

Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. "In the platinum group metals (PGM) industry, smelters are often perceived as ‘black boxes’ that have to process concentrates of variable mineralogy and originating from multiple mines operating along strike or downdip from each other in the same geographical region, as is the case in the Western Bushveld of South Africa. However, PGM smelter complexes are much more sensitive to concentrate blend variation than most metallurgists or geologists would anticipate.This paper will review the impact of concentrate blends deriving from a number of concentrators processing ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) on smelting and converting behaviour and the constraints they impose upon smelter operation. Significant variation in behaviour is not only noted between the main mineralisation types, namely the Merensky and Upper Group 2 (UG2) reefs, but also within a given reef type. Due to the way PGMs are mineralised and finely disseminated, concentrators have to grind concentrates ultra-fine to liberate the PGMs and provide a sufficiently high-grade concentrate for smelting.The chemistry and mineralogy of the concentrates vary with the type of mine (open pit versus underground), the reef type and varies along strike; this variation impacts numerous key smelter parameters such as the base metals content, the matte fall, the converter aisle capacity, sulfur dioxide gas production, furnace matte and slag temperatures, and the accumulation of high smelting chromite-spinel minerals that has led to significant smelter upset conditions such as catastrophic furnace hearth and sidewall failures.Due to the production intensity of smelting, ie its high rate of processing per unit volume, smelters have been found to be far more sensitive to rapid variation in concentrate properties, highlighting the need for adequate blend control.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, 2016. There has been an ongoing research on coal and gas outburst for the past two decades at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Wollongong. Research study began with a humble beginning, initially conducting basic laboratory studies on the coal and gas properties, progressing into the determination of gas content of coal by sorption technique and the effect of gas pressures on coal strength. The present laboratory facilities and research interests are extended to include the study of coal permeability and shrinkage properties and their effect of gas drainage characteristics with respect to gas type, and pressures. All the changes are examined with respect to changing in-site geological conditions of the coal deposit investigated. The aim is to provide a long-term support to industry in establishing a data bank for Australian coal deposit characteristics and properties.

Hillgrove, situated on the New England plateau of New South Wales, is an area rich in history and resources. Key resources are predominantly antimony, gold and scheelite and the area surrounding the historical field is environmentally sensitive and topographically challenging. Since acquiring the Hillgrove leases, Straits Hillgrove Gold has undertaken a significant exploration program on these historical mining areas with the goal to return the field to production. This exploration program has enabled Straits to significantly increase the resource base and has subsequently enabled the planned redevelopment of Hillgrove to be realised. In October 2006, installation of mining infrastructure and the initial stripping of existing development had commenced. To successfully redevelop Hillgrove, Straits has had to adopt a highly mechanised, trackless, diesel mining operation which will see the production rate commence at an initial rate of 250 kt/a of ore from a narrow vein environment. This ore will be processed on site to produce antimony metal, gold bullion and a scheelite concentrate.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

"The Stockman base metals project is situated in State Forest in the alpine area of East Gippsland, Victoria, adjacent to a National Park and within the headwaters of a major Ramsar-listed wetland catchment and the Murray-Darling River system. Site topography is steep, and elevated (650 m – 1200 m above sea level), and subject to circa 1 m annual rainfall, with occasional winter snowfall. The project consists of two volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits to be mined by underground methods and treated in a 1.0 Mt/a central concentrator to produce copper and zinc concentrates for export over a ten year operational life. New resource projects are rare in Victoria. Recognising the sensitive setting, planning for the Stockman Project, which is now in the advanced permitting stage, has focused on balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes to ensure social licence to operate is secured and can be maintained. This has involved close attention to triple bottom line (TBL) risks and outcomes. Stockman has successfully gained State and Federal approvals via the Environmental Effects Statement process. The process of obtaining these approvals has required close attention to effective stakeholder involvement, and management of a lengthy and difficult approvals process, which is still to be finally concluded. This paper is a case study of the process of that permitting and the issues encountered to date. Key learnings from the experience have included: successful approvals require close attention to much more than just the project and its technical aspects and physical setting – effective stakeholder involvement and endorsement is critical the differing consultation requirements for local, regional and government stakeholders, to design and plan implementation of a project to meet TBL objectives, and to gain social licence to operate within the Victorian approvals process, the need for an effective lead government agency with policy authority dealing with material policy change requiring post-closure financial sureties estimating realistic permitting time and cost during the project evaluation phase. This paper discusses the challenges, solutions and lessons learnt as tunnelling work continues on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) project.The MMSR project is a $220 million dollar project for the Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of approximately 4.2 km of new sewer from the southern fringe of the CBD through the inner metropolitan suburbs of Port Melbourne and South Melbourne.Of the 4.2 km of sewer currently in construction approximately 2.2 km will be constructed using a 2.95 m diameter Lovat EPB tunnel boring machine (TBM) with approximately 1.9 km of small diameter (300 to 600 mm) reticulation sewers constructed using trenchless techniques.These sewers are being constructed in a dense urban environment, which means that the tunnels and shafts are often in close proximity to buildings and structures. The underground constructionof the sewer is further complicated by the variable geology of the ancient Yarra River delta which includes weathered basalts, the infamous Coode island silt formation and fine loose sands.Some of the key challenges and lessons learnt so far during construction include:· steering and alignment control of the TBM through very soft silt with little residual strength,· development and refinement of a monitoring and alarm system for leaving the machine dormant on a day works only project,· control and measurement of tunnel lining defl ection during ring build and grouting,· prediction and monitoring of surface settlements during tunnel excavation,· improved understanding of the geology and hydrogeology at this previously unchartered area of Melbourne,· consolidation settlement due to dewatering at shafts required careful construction controls, and· ground support and excavation in close proximity to the existing 110 year old sewer which requiredvery detailed risk control measures.
