When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

The placement of chemically reactive mine wastes in mined out pits (æpit backfillingÆ) is increasingly seen by industry as best practice to manage long-term environmental risks. This is primarily because leaving wastes at the surface, or allowing pit lakes to develop, can result in unacceptable environmental risks. The costs and practicality of mitigation options such as installation of covers and community expectations of landform re-construction to achieve a post-mining, beneficial land use are also important drivers for pit backfilling.Pit backfilling can significantly reduce the post-closure risks to receiving environments, by minimising seepage due to tailings, acid/solute generating waste rock and/or salts derived from mine water treatment. Environmental risks are often highest where wastes are located close to the ground surface, due to relatively high rates of groundwater movement in near-surface aquifers and/or failure of engineered structures due to rainfall/erosion processes. Placement of these wastes at significant depth in pits, subject to mine planning and environmental assessment, can address these risks by increasing the path length and resistance from contaminant source to receptor, thus enhancing encapsulation of the wastes.Pit backfilling can also be cost-effective for mining companies. This is because existing pits are developed on the basis of an economic return and thus provide an opportunity to store tailings in an existing æengineered structureÆ at little or no incremental cost when compared with building and operating a new tailings or waste rock storage facility, often encompassing complex cover/drainage management systems. Key issues for consideration are mine planning, the long-term geotechnical behaviour of the wastes (eg consolidation of tailings which leads to release of acid/solutes in tailings porewaters), seepage rates to downstream receptors/agreed end point criteria and potential resource sterilisation. Internationally, mine closure guidelines are also showing a greater recognition of pit backfilling in the context of allowing mining companies to meet agreed post-closure land use objectives.In summary, pit backfilling can enhance the encapsulation of chemically reactive mine wastes and environment protection, and with agreement on post-closure beneficial land use, can also help to deliver post-closure benefits to communities.CITATION:Puhalovich, A A, 2012. In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

Separation of fine and coarse particles as separate streams prior to flotation, and their differential treatments, could substantially increase recovery and reduce collector consumption. A series of simulations was carried out to quantify the benefits from plant scale implementation of such a treatment at the Ispat Inland flotation circuit (Minorca mine). The study involved detailed plant sampling and sample analysis to generate the data needed for simulation studies. Samples were taken from all the streams from flotation feed to final concentrate, as well as cell lips and cell pulp. Sampling was repeated for the second ore blend that was processed by the plant during different periods of a year. Sample analysis involved sieve analysis and size by size chemical analysis for total iron, magnetic iron and silica. Raw data were mass balanced, and flow rates within the circuit were calculated. Mass balanced data were used to calculate model parameters representing the existing conditions. Usim Pac was used for both mass balancing and simulation studies. Available pilot and bench scale data were utilised to define the modified flow sheet and expected performance. The simulated flow sheet included classification of flotation circuit feed by hydrocyclones. While the coarse fraction followed the existing flow sheet, the fine fraction was sent to a magnetic separator. Magnetic and rougher flotation concentrates were combined to form the final concentrate. Two simulations for each blend were carried out. The first one assumed that there would be no change in size by size kinetic behaviours of both gangue and magnetite due to this modification. This was named as the worst case scenario, in which particles had a longer residence time due to reduced flow rates within the flotation cells. The second scenario anticipated that there would be an increase in recoveries of gangue and magnetite going into froth launder due to more efficient use of collector in absence of fines. Results showed that pre-classification of flotation feed could improve the flotation recovery by 0.3 - 0.5 per cent, with the major benefit being significant reduction (40 - 60 per cent) in the amount of collector used.

Assessing the uncertainty and risk in mineral resource estimation is required for best practice and is implied by the public reporting codes in the categorisation of mineral resources and reserves. One industry best practice is quantifying the risk on future production for a given period, which can be done using two geostatistical approaches: conditional simulation and drill hole spacing studies based on estimation variances. Conditional simulation can provide a more complete and flexible answer to the problem, but it takes a fair amount of time to complete. Drill hole spacing studies are simpler, faster and can provide reasonable assessments of mineral resource uncertainty.This paper is a presentation of the principles, theory and practice of drill hole spacing studies. Various types of risk assessment are considered. Difficulties encountered in practice are discussed, and solutions are proposed. The important parameters impacting the results are reviewed. My topic for today is the Crown Minerals of the future. New work initiatives are underway and the organisational structure is being overhauled. These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.

Lateritization appears to be associated with the early phase of the supergene process and if ilmenite grains are encased in iron oxides no further alteration proceeds.

It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. This paper outlines the methodology that will be used in this study.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. In addition, future geomet programs will focus on generating data from all available drill core programs, not just dedicated geomet drill holes, and will incorporate new types of data, such as hyper-spectral information, for improved geometallurgical estimation.CITATION:Wright, B, Carroll, T, Flanagan, M, Sua, T and Van Dijken, B, 2013. Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

There are two discrete aspects to collecting portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to obtain reliable results and to comply with reporting requirements under the 2012 edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012) – sampling method and quality assurance. A robust sampling program is required to obtain representative material for analysis. The appropriate method should be established for a particular project using a small orientation study. A variety of approaches to sampling soils, drill cuttings, rock faces and diamond drill core are discussed. These include using multiple spot analyses, scanning using a single operating beam and the collection of cutting saw pulps. The operator must also be aware of the attenuating effects of analysing through sample bags of different material types for various elements as well as the limitations of current pXRF instruments in reporting reliable data for certain elements. The analysis of the samples must also be accompanied by a quality assurance program in order to generate data that are ‘fit for purpose’. This includes recording X-ray tube resolution on a routine basis, using matrix-appropriate standards for which total elemental concentrations are available, using silica blanks, capturing sufficient duplicate analyses to constrain data precision and obtaining check assays to calibrate pXRF data against laboratory data. Examples of quality control approaches and data are presented. Table 1 of the 2012 JORC Code also recommends that information on instrument make and model, reading times and calibration be provided in any reporting of pXRF data. To this should be added information on operating mode and temperature, software version and moisture content of the samples. A robust sampling methodology with a suitable quality assurance/quality control program should produce pXRF data of sufficient quality for public reporting purposes, provided that the data are presented using appropriate cautionary language and adequate supporting information.CITATION:Arne, D C and Jeffress, G M, 2014. As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015.
