Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

Most operations, when considering their comminution circuit, are primarily concerned with achieving the desired particle size distribution to obtain adequate liberation for the separation process, at minimum cost. Invariably, the effect the grinding media has on the subsequent separation process (ie flotation, leaching) is not taken into account when selecting the media. This choice is driven by cost rather than metallurgical outcomes. Maximising valuable mineral recovery, with optimum selectivity against gangue minerals, is about good particle preparation. And, particle preparation is strongly related to achieving adequate mineral liberation with the correct pulp chemical conditions. However, the pulp chemistry of a system is largely ignored and relies heavily on pH control and the addition of appropriate reagents (collectors, frothers, activators, depressants). The changes effected by the addition of the various reagents are obtained through conditioning the ground pulp prior to or during the concentration stage, subsequent to grinding. Frequently, reagents are added during grinding with good effect, but the impact of the grinding media on down stream processing is usually overlooked. A number of case studies examining the effect of grinding media on pulp chemistry and subsequent flotation performance were completed on several different sulfide mineral systems (for example, lead/zinc, copper, refractory gold). The evidence suggests that a change in grinding media type from forged to high chrome (ie conditioning the pulp during grinding) resulted in a shift in pulp Eh to less reducing conditions, an increase in the dissolved oxygen content of the pulp and a reduction in the iron species present. The changes have a positive impact on flotation behaviour. The results of the case studies are discussed.

Japan is the largest coal importer in the world, importing from Australia, China, Indonesia, Canada, Vietnam, etc. In Indonesia, most of the produced coal is extracted from open cut mines. More open cut coal mines will be developed to fill the demand for coal in Indonesia and the world. Many surveys and projects for developing new coal mines and transferring mining technology are being conducted in tropical counties such as Indonesia and Vietnam with the aid of the Japanese Government. It has, however, been pointed out that excessive and precarious development of mines in tropical areas will damage the environments around the mines including cultivated lands, and reduce the precious rainforest. This would undoubtedly exacerbate the instability of the global climate and the food crisis in the world. This paper describes the effects of flyash on the control of acid mine drainage in order to avoid potential negative impacts on the environment caused from open cut coal mines.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa copper mine project, located in the Ica region of Peru. The Mina Justa IOCG orebody comprises of a sulfide mass overlain by an oxide cap with a sharp transitional zone between the sulfide and oxide masses. The primary target metal is copper, but there are minor amounts of gold and silver. The oxide will be treated by HPGR, crushing and vat leaching, whereas the sulfide will be treated by HPGR, milling and froth flotation. The processing selections are due to some unusual ore characteristics which have required relatively unconventional solutions.Vat leaching was chosen over heap leaching and other processes after detailed trade-off studies found it to be the most attractive, primarily due to the high acid consumption of the ore. The sulfide flotation produces a wide range of concentrate grades due to the complex nature of the mineralogy. The selection of HPGR circuits for both the oxide and sulfide ore is due to the extremely hard and competent nature of the deposit. Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K1) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and tne formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

The planned extraction of deeper copper ore at Isa Mine has necessitated a review of existing equipment and methods to contain costs and improve working conditions. Mining is in progress for a crushing-conveying system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 Orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of ore to the crushers and conveying of the crushed ore by cable belt conveyor to existing shaft loading facilities, a distance of about 2 km. To develop part of the conveyor drive a new machine will be used, the Robbins MM120 Mobile Miner, a joint development project between The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The Mobile Miner uses a rotating cutting wheel to excavate headings 3.7 m high and from 4.7 m to 7.5 m wide. To ventilate the deep crusher complexes and associated development at high virgin rock temperatures, a refrigeration plant will be built on surface to reticulate chilled water underground. Bulk cooling of air to the 3000/3500 Orebodies and the southern crushers will be combined with the reticulation of chilled service water to the lower workings of the mine.

An examination was made of the filtration characteristics of a haematite slurry using a range of polyacrylamide based flocculants in solutions containing up to 3 per cent sodium chloride. The polymers used were "high" and "Iow" molecular weight and had from 0 to 40 per cent charged groups.Increasing charge density tends to reduce the dose required to achieve optimum performance measured by filtration rate and by cake moisture. In general increased salt addition tends to increase the dosage required to achieve these optima. Both these observations result from the change in polymer extension and accord well with the bridging theory of flocculation.The dose required for optimal cake moisture is up to three times greater than that required for optimal filtration rate. This effect is reasonably consistent for all polymers studied and appears to be non-linearly dependent on salt concentration, with the difference being small at 0 and 3 per cent but quite significant at 1 per cent.

Modelling and simulation are important aspects of flotation research, which may assist in the design of new circuits and the optimisation of existing ones. Flotation research in the AMIRA P9 project has developed a methodology for flotation plant modelling based on determination of cell (pulp) characteristics. froth characteristics, and ore floatability (using floatability components). The implementation of this methodology requires the determination of ore floatability, to which end a small flotation pilot plant known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) has been designed and then built and kindly made available to the AMIRA P9 project by Baker Process. The FCTR has a 2 tph capacity and consists of six 130 litre rougher/scavenger cells and six 50 litre cleaner/recleaner cells. The Mintek FloatStar pulp level control system is used to control the pulp level in all cells. A number of experimental procedures have been developed for using the FCTR to obtain the data required for the P9 flotation models. These procedures include how to determine the floatability parameters, Pi and mi, the bubble surface area flux, Sb, the mean residence of the pulp in the cell, t, water recovery. Rw, froth zone recovery, Rf, and the degree of entrainment, ENT. The flexibility of the FCTR allows it to be used in numerous flotation studies such as stream characterisation, reagent testing, grinding experiments, power studies, oxidation studies, and scale-up and simulation studies. This paper will describe the design and operation of the FCTR and the procedures that will be used to obtain data from the rig for modelling purposes.

Queensland legislation, industry codes and policies relating to mine rehabilitation and closure create the expectation of successful progressive rehabilitation and that the post-mining environment is being returned to a condition suited to a pre-agreed, beneficial end use. Yet none of the rehabilitated mined land in the Bowen Basin has been certified as successful by authorities suggesting there is a gap between current rehabilitation and the full environmental outcomes that the legislation could deliver. We tested the veracity of this perspective and reflect on where responsibility for any discrepancy lies.We first reviewed current Queensland legislation and industry codes relating to stakeholder engagement, rehabilitation, closure planning and post-mining land use. We tested the accessibility of the documentation trail for several recent coal-mining projects in the Bowen Basin and examined the level of detail in approval documentation. We then assessed the rehabilitation performance reports of these mines in relation to the contents of their approval documents. Legislation, guidelines and codes repeatedly emphasise the need to plan for closure before mine operations begin and to progressively perform rehabilitation with an agreed end-use in mind. Early stakeholder involvement in these processes and transparency of actions and outcomes are also encouraged by government publications. Overall, in terms of transparency, we found that relevant documents are generally available to the persistent enquirer. However, the rehabilitation and closure undertakings given in both mine company and regulator documentation were commonly generic and rehabilitation obligations were not explicitly incorporated into rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation reporting was also weak in that no distinction is required between successful and unsuccessful revegetation, nor to closure objectives and mine completion criteria. Responsibility for the apparent disconnect between regulatory intent and actual performance appears to begin with the regulator too readily allowing generic information and in not requiring performance reporting to correspond with approved post-mine conditions. As a result, companies may have a much greater rehabilitation and closure risk than mine management expects. Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

Triboelectric Separation - Beneficiation of Coal The performance of triboelectric separators is highly sensitive to the selectivity of the particle charging process. This paper presents a quantitative study on triboelectric coal beneficiation. The performance of different charging media was studied. Stainless steel was identified as having a work function between that of coal and silicate gangue and found to be the optimum charging medium for coal beneficiation. Recent results from separation tests were performed where silicate gangue was separated from crude coal using a parallel plate free-fall separator are illustrated.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

The sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is becoming more widely adopted as an underground mining method as mines become deeper and target lower grade mineralisation. SLC has been successfully adopted in increasingly complex and wide-ranging conditions in the past 10–20 years, demonstrating the flexibility of the method. Various challenges encountered at SLC mines around the world have led to significant differences in operating practices, mine performance and mine productivity. Unfortunately, aspects related to productivity, operational performance and best practice are not widely published and remain with individual companies. Limited information is publicly available to compare operational performance of SLC mines in the various conditions where the mining method is now being applied. To overcome this shortcoming, a global review of SLC operations was undertaken over a three-year period as part of the Cave Mining 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the review was to document technical and operational practices, hazard management strategies and key benchmarking metrics at SLC mines around the world. A total of 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies were included in the project. The main outcome of the project was a manual of operational and technical practices, benchmarking of key metrics and documentation of the current state-of-the-art for each aspect of SLC mining. This paper describes the main findings from the benchmark in terms of mine productivity, including mine development, production and mining costs. The implications of mine scale, depth and ground conditions on operational performance at each of the benchmarked mines is described and charts are provided comparing key productivity metrics.
