Remote sensing, in general, is the recording of light and heat from a planet's surface within a certain range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For the Earth, systems capable of this recording are the MultiSpectral Scanner (MSS) and SLAR. The former is the recording system used in satellite and will be discussed in the next section. SLAR stands for Side Looking Airborne Radar. This device sends invisible radar waves which illuminate the Earth's surface. The reflected waves are subsequently recorded as images. The system can operate through darkness and dense cloud cover, and is particularly suited for the study of geological structures at both large and small scale (Wayland 1976). Remote sensing techniques are now widely being made use of in mineral exploration, especially for those last remote 'sanctuaries' where geological data are meagre or non-existent. For places like Borneo, West Irian, the Amazon Basin etc. remote sensing, in the form of both satellite imagery and SLAR, is of considerable help, in fact more often than not the only help, to delineate geological provinces, geotectonic domains and meaningful lineaments. In the case of New Zealand, well made geological maps at scale 1:250 000 by the Geological Survey are available to the public and these provide useful preliminary grounds for the selection of target areas. However, even in this case LANDSAT imagery can be of aid as will be shown later.

Coal production from Coal & Allied's Hunter Valley No 1 open cut is presently hauled 10 km by road to washing and train loading facilities at Liddell. This road haul, using bottom dump trucks on a bitumen sealed road, presents some unique earthmover tyre problems. Sound tyre management has controlled one potentially serious problem, that of heat damage, implicit with such a long haul. Tread abrasion or wear is therefore the limiting tyre performance factor. Study of abrasion mechanisms and interpretation of abrasion patterns has facilitated an understanding of the wear processes involved. This understand- ing has highlighted the importance of front tyre wheel alignment. The development of irregular wear is shown to be related to the mildness of the abrasion and methods of remving irregular wear are presented. In conclusion haulage by large off highway trucks on long sealed haul roads has been eooncoically and technically successful at Hunter Valley No 1. Deformed regions of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia, contain several major iron ore deposits where banded iron-formation (BIF) of the Dales Gorge Member was converted to martite-microplaty hematite. The genesis of these ores remains controversial, in part because no study has systematically documented how stratigraphically equivalent rocks change chemically from undeformed regions into the deposits. Profound chemical and mineralogical differences do occur between rocks in the undeformed north and mineralised south. BIF and shale can be classified into three types: BIF, altered BIF and iron ore, and black shale, altered black shale and red shale. A series of low temperature (20 to 250¦C) chemical reactions can explain the observed differences in chemistry and mineralogy. The inferred reaction paths indicate that no single process could have produced all of the altered rocks at Mt Whaleback. Recently described carbonate-rich, silica-poor rocks at Mt Tom Price (Taylor et al, 2001) suggest this alteration sequence is even more complex. Our favoured explanation for the genesis of hematite ores is one that can explain deposits at Mt Whaleback and Mt Tom Price: following regional metamorphism, hydrothermal fluids locally formed carbonate-rich, silica-poor BIF with magnetite and carbonate-rich altered black shale. Subsequent surface derived fluids oxidised this magnetite, crystallised microplaty hematite (mpl) and eventually dissolved carbonates and silicates leaving high-grade ore. Either during or sometime after mineralisation, acidic, oxygenated fluids converted altered black shale to red shale and unaltered BIF to martite-rich BIF without carbonates across the southeast of the province.

At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. Low displacement fault zones often comprise a mesh of interlinked faults, extensional-shear and purely extensional vein fractures. Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major through going faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf > s3, at least locally) and the condition Pf ~ s3 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid over pressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc. Fluid redistribution in the crust is influenced by maximum hydraulic gradient (not necessarily vertical), by existing permeability anisotropy arising from bedding and other forms of crustal layering, and by structural permeability developed under the prevailing stress field. Strong directional permeability develops in the s2 direction, parallel to fault-fracture intersections within the mesh and orthogonal to fault slip vectors. In particular tectonic settings, stress-controlled permeability allows strongly focused flow through fault-fracture meshes with high potential for mineralisation. Favoured localities for mesh development include short-lived link structures along large-displacement fault zones such as dilational jogs, lateral ramps, and transfer faults.

Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. In mining industries, materials loading and handling costs represent a significant component of the total (capital and operation) costs. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading and haulage system with the lowest total cost. The optimal size and number of equipment calculation are very important task for mining engineering because loading and haulage equipment are major proportion of open pit mining cost. Capital and operating cost are considered in objective function with respect to interest rate, insurance and tax in non-linear form. Shovel and truck annual productivity constraint, fleet matching constraint and number of truck per shovel constraint are incorporated in this optimisation problem with continuous variables. This formulation will yield total cost minimisation per hour and good accuracy compared to previous methods.

The history and milestones in the evolution of support systems utilised in the mass-mined chrysotile mines of Shabanie and King are discussed in detail. The use of block caving, false footwall or sublevel caving mining methods brings with it some major support problems, which are exacerbated, in our low rock strength mining environments. The paper discusses the various support elements and systems that have been used successfully or otherwise in these operations. Some predictions for the future of rock reinforcing in our ground conditions are highlighted, in relation to geomechanics, levels of mechanisation and production risk analysis.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling is a useful tool that can assist engineers in designing effective ventilation systems for the control of airborne dust generated during mining operations. Thistechnology can save time, effort and the costs associated with re-work or the traditional on-site experimental field trials by running desktop 3D simulations of the various proposed scenarios using state-of-the-art CFD analysis tools. Before implementing a dust management system, an understanding of the behaviour of airborne dust particles in the face zone can be achieved, which can improve the confidence in the secondary ventilation and dust management design. Usingadvanced numerical models, suitable dust extraction strategies can be foreseen, and multiple scenarios can be simulated and investigated quickly. As a case study, dry drilling operations in Kimberlite orebodies produce large quantities of fine dust which poses health and safety risks. An effective dust management system is required to achieve acceptable face conditions. A possible practical solution is a ducted exhaust ventilation system with a force fan in the face zone. This paper demonstrates how CFD analysis can be used as a tool to assist the design engineer with validating and optimising the proposed ventilation design by tracking the trajectories of different size dust particles, to determine the best equipment layout and appropriate flow rates which minimises airborne dust.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Although cyclones have been around in their current form since the early-1890s, there have been some exciting new developments, which have extended their efficiency/operation. These developments have taken place with both dense medium and classification cyclones. The more noteworthy developments are:Inlet designInlet design is the determining factor in classification cyclone capacity and efficiency. The recently developed ribbon inlet with patented pressure bulge has not only resulted in unbelievable increases in capacity, but also in efficiency. Sharpness of separation corresponding to an alpha value of greater than four has been achieved! Secondary offtakeOne of the factors leading to reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of coarse particles in the cyclone overflow. The secondary offtake has been developed specifically to scavenge these particles from the cyclone overflow with great success. Water injectorThe other major factor resulting in reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of misplaced fine particles in the cyclone underflow. The water injector, which has been around for many years in various forms, can reduce this short circuit fraction by up to 50 per cent. 3-in-1 cycloneThe 3-in-1 cyclone combines the inlet design, secondary off take and water injector into a single unit resulting in the most efficient classification cyclone available in the market. The RejectorTMIron ore has a high yield to underflow and traditional dense medium cyclones have always been spigot constrained. The Rejector TM is an exciting new development whereby the spigot capacity has been increased substantially. The application of the Rejector TM will result in fewer/smaller cyclones being required for a given duty resulting in efficiency gains and reductions in both operating and maintenance costs.

Organo-sulphur-based collectors (eg xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates) are widely used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Xanthates (ROC(=S)Sû), for example, adsorb strongly at sulphide mineral surfaces, in a reaction that is electrochemically coupled with the reduction of dissolved oxygen. One of the oxygen reduction products, hydrogen peroxide, reacts directly with dissolved xanthate, leading to its oxidative decomposition. Experimental work has been conducted, using ethyl xanthate, to understand the molecular mechanism by which hydrogen peroxide reacts with xanthates. A number of degradation products have been identified, some of which have not been reported previously. This oxidative decomposition reaction pathway is discussed in the broader context of xanthate decomposition in flotation systems. One of the identified ethyl xanthate decomposition products, ethyl perxanthate (ROC(=S)SOû), has been observed in the process water of a number of mineral processing operations. The interaction of this molecule with goethite (α-FeOOH) particles, typical of that found in tailings dams, has been studied in more detail using attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-FTIR. The ethyl perxanthate molecule has been found to coordinate to iron (FeIII) at the goethite surface, and undergo a surface-catalysed decomposition process. In the presence of both PbII and goethite, a ternary surface complex is formed, where ethyl perxanthate is coordinated directly to surface adsorbed PbII atoms. The results obtained give some insight into the environmental fate of ethyl xanthate in tailings streams, and a basis on which to consider the environmental importance of such species in tailings dams. Strategies for the destruction of residual xanthate levels in waste water streams are discussed in terms of the likely reaction products.

The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases.   The d18Oquartz values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9ë. Calculations show that the d18Oquartz values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

Most mining operations have been happy to live in blissful ignorance of what their equipment is really capable of. Shareholders have been shown increasing tonnes output per employee (due to rationalising employee numbers). It is now known that the best practice for large mining trucks is 52 per cent higher than average or best practice for excavators is 41 per cent higher than average, or 38 per cent in shovels or 35 per cent with draglines, etc. The data is available. The bell curve of performance is flat. Substantial underperformance is rife. If you are working in or supplying equipment or services to one of the majority of operating mines that donÆt achieve best practice surely you want to know why. Or maybe you donÆt? For many mining people this sort of knowledge could be dangerous to their career so keeping the MD or CEO in the dark is a good option. Many suppliers donÆt want the performance of their equipment benchmarked? Mining consultants donÆt have the data so they are happy to keep guessing. Unfortunately, many Business Improvement or Business Excellence projects are about ticking the participantÆs æcareer boxesÆ. The first step to capacity utilisation is knowing what the capacity is. Even then people and culture will get in the way. People are the biggest hurdle to capacity utilisation. This paper will discuss what the mine of the future (and today) will need to do to utilise the productive capacity of its assets. It is not just benchmarking. It is not just automation. It is not just technology. It is about engaging those people who impact on equipment performance; right from the operator up to the Mine Manager. Doing it better involves a process to facilitate change and a culture which says it is OK to try even if you are wrong.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

Post-metamorphic structural evolution of Otago Schist resulted in a pattern of northwest and northeast striking faults and fractures cutting the basement rocks. These faults have been reactivated several times since Mesozoic metamorphism. Gold-bearing quartz veins which have been exploited sporadically over the past 130 years are almost invariably hosted by northwest striking structures, and most exploration has been focussed on these structures. There is evidence for hydrothermal activity and mineralisation along some of the northeast striking structures, although there has been very little work done on these structures. Our study is attempting to characterise the hydrothermal processes in the northeast structures, in comparison to the northwest structures, in order to see if further detailed exploration is warranted. There is evidence for both normal and reverse senses of movement on northeast striking faults, and some of the faults have evidence for early ductile deformation overprinted by later brittle structures. Northeast striking structures host stibnite mineralisation in places, and faults are locally silicified or extensively impregnated with ankeritic carbonate. Sulphides are rare in veins, but do occur in some hydrothermally altered host rocks. Hydrothermal haematite accompanies extensive silicification along the Manuherikia fault zone near Alexandra. Anomalous gold concentrations occur in some hydrothennal zones, and in downslope sediments in some localities.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013.
