BUT little was known of the coals of Southeastern Ohio until the present survey of the State under Dr. Newberry began its work. The results of the geological investigations of Prof. E. B. Andrews in this region, and of the chemical investigations of Prof. T. G. Wormley, both of which appear in the reports of the survey for 1869 and 1874, and more recent special reports by the former, together with some data for which I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Newberry, and my own limited observations, have served me for the preparation of the following notice of the coals lying on the western border of the great Appalachian coal-basin in the region drained by the Hocking River and its tributaries, and belonging to the Lower Coal-Measures. Some uncertainty exists as to the place in the succession of the lower coals to be assigned to the seams known and mined in the Hocking Valley. It is the opinion of Prof. Andrews that the inequalities of the original surface were such that we cannot identify in that region the lowest coals known in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the contiguous parts of Ohio, but that we must rather count from above downwards. These conclusions Dr. Newberry is not prepared to accept, and further researches will be necessary before certainty can be attained in this matter. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet. Cobalt and nickel have been diffused at tracer concentrations in gold at several temperatures in the range from approximately 700° to 950°C. The diffusion penetration profiles were determined by a serial sectioning technique in which the gold is first anodized and then the anodic layer is dissolved in acid. In this ulay sections as thin as 250A could be removed reproduci-bly. In all cases, the region close to the specimen surface was characterized by irregular behavior in the sense that the logarithm of concentration was not linear in the square of the penetration distance. In sotne cases, there zuas an indication of the operation of very slow dijfusion in this region, while in others the apparent diffusion coejj'icient was negative. Possible reasons for this anomalous behavior are briefly discussed. In recent years it has been found that the region close to the surface of a metal can sometimes exhibit anomalously slow diffusion characteristics relative to the interior of the metal. One of the best examples of this fact is the work of Styris and omizuka,' who showed that the apparent diffusion coefficient for zinc in the region withi: about 1 p of the free surface of copper was about ,,,, that at deeper penetrations. This result is particularly interesting, because it is free from the possibly complicating effects of low solubility of the diffusing tracer in the solvent metal. In the case of diffusion under conditions of low solubilitjr, interpretaticn of the results in terms of lattice diffusion is difficult because of the enhanced short-circuiting produced by segregation to dislocations.2'3 Measurements by Duhl et 1. suggest that cobalt diffusing in gold may also show a near-surface effect of this type. Once again the solubility is high, so that this result could be of great interest. However, the technique used for analyzing the diffusion penetration zones by Duhl, viz. the counting of residual gamma activity in the specimen following sectioning, appears to have indicated a near-surface effect in a parallel experiment on the self-diffusion of gold reported at the same time. The latter result is known to be spurious, since Kidson5 has demonstrated that self-diffusion in gold does not show this effect. Duhl et 01. also reported some measurements on the diffusion of nickel in gold, but failed to give any data for the near-surface region. As the solubility of nickel in gold is high, such data would also be of special interest. We, therefore, decided to conduct another set of experiments on the diffusion of nickel and cobalt in gold, using a sectioning technique that allows the individual sections to be assayed for solute content and thus gives direct determinations of penetration profiles. Also, by sectioning with an anodizing/stripping tech- nique, very thin layers can be removed and the region close to the surface studied in detail. MATERIALS The gold specimens were supplied as single crystal disks $ in. in diam by a in. high by Monocrystals Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. The gold itself was of spectro-scopic purity, i.e., better than 99.99 pct pure. METHOD Specimen Preparation. One flat end face of each gold crystal was spark planed with a Servomet spark erosion machine set for minimum spark energy. Following this treatment the crystals were preannealed for 2 to 4 days at temperatures of either 400" or 700°C. The three crystals preannealed at 700°C showed signs of recrystallization. The spark-planed end face of each crystal was then coated with the appropriate amount of 63i or 60 radioactive tracer. This deposit was laid down in a simple plating bath containing the as-supplied solution of the radioactive isotope as well as sufficient ammonium oxalate to saturate the solution. Some ammonium oxalate remained undissolved on the floor of the bath for this purpose. During plating further additions of ammonium oxalate were sometimes required to allow the plating to continue satisfactorily, perhaps due to passivation of the undissolved oxalate already present. The thickness of the deposited layer was determined by comparison of the apparent surface activity of the plated specimen with that of a similar specimen having a weighable deposit of the isotope on its end face. Correction for self-absorption of the radiation was made in this calculation. Annealing. The deposited crystals were annealed in a hydrogen atmosphere in sealed silica tubes. During this heat treatment they were supported, active face down, on optically flat silica plates. The temperature was measured with calibrated Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples, and the tabulated values can be taken to be correct to Z°C. All the crystals showed evidence of recrystallization following these heat treatments, suggesting that initially they may not have been good single crystals or had suffered strain during delivery. Concentration Profile Analysis. After annealing, the crystals were sectioned by the anodizing-stripping technique.6 The anodizing involved suspension of the specimen with its cylindrical axis horiz6ntal by a gold wire in a 200-ml beaker containing 1 M Hg304. A cathode in the form of a strip of gold sheet, 2 in. wide and positioned to be in contact with the curved side of the beaker, completely encircled the specimen. An anodizing current of 30 ma, corresponding to a current density of 5 ma per sq cm on the surface of the specimen, was passed for times ranging from 5 to 150 min depending on the thickness of gold to be removed; the solution was stirred continuously during this process. The term "slime-coating" is not new in the art of flotation; the phenomenon has been observed and described by Taggart;(l)† Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) and by Ince.(3) Notwithstanding that flotation was introduced for the treatment of finely crushed ore, the adverse effects of slimes have been recognized since the earliest days of the process, and the Elmore, Delprat, Potter, and other processes actually specified desliming of the ore prior to treatment. The cause of this trouble has been studied and described by Taggart;(1) Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) Ince;(3) Morrow and Griswold;(4) and by Gaudin and Malozemoff.(5) Old Theory of Slime-coatings At present, so far as published work shows, there seems to be but one theory for the mechanism of slime-coatings. Ince(3) states that they are due to attraction between electrostatic charges of opposite sign on the sulfide and on the slime particles, supporting this theory by migration experiments in the Burton tube. He also used the microscope in conjunction with a glass cell employed by Beans and Eastlack(6) in studying migration, but met with interference from endosmosis. Several attempts have been made in the Department of Mineral Dressing at Columbia University to duplicate Ince's experiments with the Burton tube, but the results have never been convincing. Formation of precipitates which settled through the pulp levels, and evolution of gas at the electrodes, which disturbed the interface between the pulp and the distilled water above it, seriously interfered with observations. However, by use of the migration cell shown in Fig. 1, endosmosis effects and the disturbances due to precipitation and gas evolution were avoided, and distinct and reproducible migrations or absence of migration were observed. The cell was made of bakelite and had platinum electrodes. ECONOMIC waste caused by mine fires may become considerable,15 especially if a fire is allowed to spread or temporarily to get beyond control. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to make every action count. To contribute toward its extinction effectively it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment, and continuously thereafter, what is happening at the seat of the fire, which may be in a remote or inaccessible area, and also to recognize what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. In combatting a fire the mining engineer and the chemist should cooperate, first deciding upon the course of action to be taken and then drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required to carry out proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which these operations could be performed, and upon the chemist's knowledge for the results to be expected therefrom. After the initial steps to be taken have been decided, it devolves upon the mining engineer to see that they are carried out and upon the chemist to evaluate the results and to keep the mining engineer continuously informed in regard to a variety of matters-such as the composition and toxic or asphyxiating properties of the atmosphere in which the men may be working, whether the fire is increasing or decreasing in intensity and its probable temperature, the quantity of air leakage and the explosion hazards of the fire area. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what the chemist can and cannot contribute as a member of the fire-fighting personnel. The technical literature contains several hundred papers relating directly and indirectly to mine fires, and this fact alone is testimony to the complex nature of the phenomena involved in the birth, life, and final demise of a fire. A fire may be stopped (I) by preventing oxygen from reaching the coal or (2) by removing the conditions necessary for the rapid reaction of coal with oxygen; i.e., decreasing the temperature. All methods of prevention or control. necessarily must be based upon one or the other, or both, of these two principles. . The chemistry of a fire may be understood readily if the low-temperature oxidation of coal is considered as a starting point; then oxidation at higher temperatures (or combustion) ; and with these, the composition of the solid and gaseous products resulting from the oxidation or from the effects of the heat liberated. This discussion refers particularly to Pennsylvania anthracite, although much of the material applies equally well to coals of lower rank. OXIDATION OF COAL Oxidation of coal fundamentally is confined to the surface; that is, the rate at which oxygen penetrates into the interior of a solid block of coal is so slow that it may be ignored.6,16 Oxidation starts when a fresh surface is exposed, and the rate is

THERE have been two important accomplishments of the Truman administration; the Hoover Commission report on inefficiency and waste in government and the report of the Paley Commission on the natural resources of the United States. Both reports are in the interest of the American people and should transcend the boundaries of political parties. Both reports are starting points for the formulation of policies which must be continuously revised to meet changing conditions. Regardless of the outcome of the election the principles embodied in these two great documents must be kept alive. The Paley report is right in our own bailiwick of mineral raw materials and it behooves us to study it carefully as our responsibility to posterity. To those in the mining industry who have limited their field of observation to moving rock or to metal prices it may come as a surprise that our production of such staples as copper, lead, and zinc has fallen behind increased requirements to the point that substantial tonnages must be imported. Iron ore is next on the list and everybody knows that such metals as tin, tungsten, chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt are imported almost exclusively. The crisis in raw materials pointed up by the Paley report has been reported annually by Elmer Pehrson and others to small gatherings at the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the Annual Meeting for as long as we can remember. In September 1949, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held an international resource conference at Lake Success which disclosed these same grave conclusions: - Consumption of raw materials is multiplying at an alarming rate, faster than discoveries or replacements are being made. - Production has been wasteful and utilization lavishly beyond enginee¬ing and practical requirements. - Industrialized nations are depleted and many raw materials consumed by industry are not found in the industrialized countries. - Nations formerly exporters of raw materials are increasingly building their own consuming industries. - Political forces in the world are limiting access to raw materials. The Paley Commission selecting the quarter century, 1950 to 1975, to project raw material requirements for the United States, pointed out obstacles to meeting these requirements, and made recommendations for procurement. It is not important that we disagree that cobalt consumption will reach 344 pct of present, or fluorspar 187 pct when iron and ferroalloys are only expected to increase 75 pct. What is important it that the fabulous appetite of the United States for mineral raw materials has consumed more since World War I than was consumed by the entire world in all recorded history prior to 1914. And, unless the people of the United States are satisfied to remain at their present standard of living (which is unthinkable) this consumption is correctly plotted by the Paley Commission as continuing to expand. If the U. S. is to continue on a course of progress, it must procure raw materials wherever it can at the lowest possible cost. Natural resources are clearly an area in which the broadest cooperation between industry and government must exist to achieve efficient exploitation, economic consumption, and expansion of sources of supply. The message of the Paley report requires action comparable to that of the North Atlantic Pact. Its implication is as significant as military preparedness. It is a world problem. It is a mining engineering problem. Don't let it die!

There is an accelerating acceptance of change by management of cement companies. Diversity of response is noticeable in efforts across the country to reverse the downward trend in profits that brought margins in 1966 to the lowest point in 20 years. New concepts are emerging among managers as they seek to increase the efficiency in use of the basic corporate resources of men, capital and technology. The shift towards computerized control of cement manufacturing is making new gains as is diversification of cement companies into allied fields such as production and sale of natural and light- weight aggregates, crushed stone and concrete products. Increased interest in special products such as white cement and further moves overseas are also significant. Perhaps the most dramatic event of recent years occurred in Washington at hearings before the Federal Trade Commission where cement producers split on whether there should be FTC guidelines that would prevent ownership of ready-mixed concrete producers by cement companies.

Oil and gas development as well as extensive leasing in Kentucky during 1940 has shown a marked improvement over the past three years.$ The most noticeable improvement is the gas development in eastern Kentucky and the deep tests being drilled by major oil interests. In western Kentucky, 406 wells were drilled, of which 173 were oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 221 were dry or abandoned. The number of dry tests was large, because no important, new oil or gas pool was discovered and many of the dry holes could be considered wildcat tests. However, with either oil or gas possibilities from Pennsylvanian formations on through Mississippian, Silurian, Devonian, and Ordovician, this percentage of dry holes seems rather high. Many of the dry tests possibly should have been tested in deeper horizons before being abandoned: namely, Silurian and Ordovician ages. In eastern Kentucky, 213 wells were drilled, of which 113 were gas producers, 61 were oil wells, and 39 were dry holes. Of these wells, 117 were drilled in the most important Big Sandy gas field, in Floyd, Pike, Knott and Martin Counties, and of this number 103 were gas producers, 5 were oil wells, and 9 were dry holes. In the Big Sinking oil field of Estill, Lee and Powell Counties, 70 of the remaining 96 wells were drilled, j6 being oil producers. During 1940, four deep tests were drilled in eastern Kentucky. One test penetrated the Knox dolomite in Knox County and was dry; no St. Peter sand was encountered. Another test in Lee County had some gas in what might be called St. Peter sand, according to the State Department, and also some gas deeper in the Knox dolomite. In Wolfe County, a small oil well was completed in the Ordovician, which was undoubtedly of Trenton age. ilt the present time, four deep tests are being drilled, all of which will go to the Knox dolomite. In Elliott County, on the Burke dome, the Inland Gas Co, is drilling at 3650 ft. In Magoffin County, on the Paint Creek uplift, the Cumberland Petroleum Co. is drilling at 3800 ft. In Clark County, in the Ruckerville fault area, W. 0. Allen is drilling at 1800 ft. In Laurel County, on the Sinking Creek dome, the Globe Oil and Gas Co. is drilling at I750 ft. If production is encountered in the Trenton, St. Peter, or Knox dolomite in any of these tests, eastern Kentucky will experience a marked increase in deep development.

It is characteristic of most shales and surface clays that a bloated or vesicular structure is produced by burning to a sufficiently high temperature, usually about 150° to 200°F. above the normal maturing temperature used when making common brick of the same material. Early investi-: gators recognized this phenomenon and attributed it to the release or expansion of gases in the vitrified piece. A number of theories have been advanced on the source of the gas and the manner in which it is evolved, but none has been proved conclusively. T. E. Jackson's1 early theory that bloating was due to oxygen evolved by ferric oxide in forming ferrous oxide or ferrous silicate was never substantiated by - experimental work. Orton2 thought this explanation unlikely, as all clays should bloat at the same temperature, if this were true. He found that clays bloated in the range from IIoo° to 17oo°C. Also, many clays containing iron did not bloat at all, but fused. Orton also stated that oxida- tion of different types of carbon was a source of gas during burning of clay and should be expelled before vitrification was reached. Seger3 said that he had dissolved ferric oxide in glass with no apparent evolution of gas. Matson4 came to the conclusion that ferruginous clays burned ' to vitrification in an oxidizing atmosphere did not have the iron in a ferrous form. According to Wilson,= the gases responsible for bloating might be entrapped air, water, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and hydrocarbons. He spoke of two causes of bloating: (I) incomplete oxidation below the vitrification temperature, and (2) decomposition of compounds and evolution of gases above the vitrification temperature. Decomposition of calcium sulphate was given as the principal example of the latter. Bleininger and Montgomery0 stated that if any time after vitrification began the evolution of gaseous matter was rapid enough so that pressure was produced within the clay, bloating was certain to take place, and a vesicular structure would be formed. They recognized that initial structure, rate of heating, kiln atmosphere, and many other variables affected bloating. Work done by the Emergency Fleet Corporation7 indicated that clays suitable for bloating should be high in compounds of metallic oxides, carbon, sulphur, sodium, potassium, or other equivalent compounds, which either act as a flux or give off gas. Orton2 studied the chemical status of the carbon, iron, and sulphur in clays during various stages of burning, using a Huron shale that bloated under oxidizing or reducing conditions. He found that only a small amount of sulphur remained in the clay and that it could be detected only by dissolving the clay in hydrofluoric acid; i.e., the sulphur was in combination with the silica. orton said that this sulphur was probably in the form of iron sulphide dissolved in the glass phase. The iron sulphide was not broken down by heating, but was dissolved in the basic slag or glass,

In recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. The Purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing 18 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic I5-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wet-tability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930's and early 1940's. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output. Determinations of the hydrogen content of irons and steels invariably are subject to two serious difficulties: (I) the determination of amounts of 0.001 per cent or less of any constituent requires an analytical procedure of unusual precision and accuracy, and (2) the hydrogen content of many samples is dccidedly not stable; i.e., there is no assurance that the content at the time the analysis is made is the same as it was when the sample was taken or at some previous time in the history of the piece. In respect to both the precision and speed of the determination, the vacuum-extraction procedure for the determination of hydrogen possesses advantages over the vacuum-fusion procedure, which has been the recognized standard for the detcrmination of other gaseous elements in sted-— oxygen and nitrogen for example. The basic facts upon which the vacuum-extraction procedure is based—i.e., the evolution of gas from solid steel when it is heated in vacuum, and the fact that the evolved gas is rich in hydrogen—were observed by Graham1 many years ago. Subsequent investigations have shown that hydrogen exists in steel chiefly as interstitial solid solution (i.e., in atomic dispersion) and perhaps to some extent as hydridcs that are unstable and decompose to form atomic hydrogen. In either case practically all of the hydrogen in steel at elevated temperatures exists in the atomic condition and consequently is able to diffuse readily through the metal. In contrast to this, other gaseous elements, such as oxygen and nitrogen, normally are present in steel chiefly in the form of relatively stable compounds such as oxides or silicates and nitrates; i.e., the oxygen and nitrogen atoms are fixed in stable combinations and are not free to migrate. The only oxygen or nitrogen that can diffuse in steel is the small amount in solution (atomically dispersed) and the rate of diffusion of these atoms is much less than that of hydrogen because of their greater atomic volume and lower mobility. Consequently, it is possible to extract most or all of the hydrogen from solid steel in a reasonable time at moderately elevated temperatures, but the procedure is not applicable to the determination of oxygen or nitrogen. It is only within the last decade that these observations have been developed into an analytical procedure for the determination of hydrogen. Apparatus and Procedure The apparatus used at the National Bureau of Standards,6 for the determination of hydrogen by the vacuum-extraction procedure, is shown schematically in Fig. I. The specimen, freshly cleaned and dried,* is suspended on a fine wire within the quartz furnace tube that is connected to the reservoir system and analytical train.

The production of oil in Mexico during 1929 was approximately 45,000,000 bbl., or 5,000,000 bbl. less than in 1928. The production of the fields near Tampico showed a decline of over 10,000,000 bbl. for both the light and heavy crudes, which was partly offset by an increase of over 5,000,000 bbl. in the production of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. During 1929 the retrenchment policy followed by practically all the companies was continued and no material improvement should be expected until the unsatisfactory conditions that brought about this situation are remedied. A new administration has just assumed control in Mexico; it should remain in power for 6 years, and the progress of the oil industry during that time will depend primarily on the policy pursued by the new government with respect to oil development. Development During 1929, there were drilled 214 wells as compared with 371 in 1928 and 583 in 1927. The percentage of producers in 1929 was 47.2 as against 34 per cent. in 1928. The new wells did not show water as quickly as in 1928, particularly in the Cacalilao field, where the greatest number of producers was brought in, their average initial daily production being 380 bbl. The flush daily production per well in the Southern fields was 1730 bbl., while the wells in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec came in with an average of 770 bbl. Development is summarized in Table 1. In the Southern fields 63 wells were drilled in 1929, of which 23 were producers, the best being drilled in Paso Real. This development tends to show that the southern extension of Dos Bocas-Alamo fault from Alamo to San Isidro terminates at San Isidro. The two wildcat wells completed in 1929, one in Magiscatzin and the other in Xicotencatl, were failures, and at the end of the year there were eight wildcat wells drilling and material was being hauled for two more.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

In single-stage autogenous grinding, the buildup of a critical size fraction in the media can be corrected by removing this material through pebble ports, crushing it below the critical size range, and recycling the crusher product back to the mill. The rate at which the critical sire fraction is crushed affects the size distribution of the grinding media and this in turn affects the sire distribution of the grate discharge. This provides a means for controlling the grind produced by a single-stage autogenous grinding unit. The pilot-plant investigations on a very hard copper ore were carried out at the facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University. In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately 9 in. top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build-up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge."' The buildup of a critical size fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large-diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as 1) an increase in mill liner wear, 2) wear on the steel balls, and 3) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit opera-tions resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out. A number of investigators' have suggested the use of a small crusher as an alternative to the use of large steel balls for control of a critical size fraction. With this technique the critical size fraction is removed from the mill continuously through suitable-sized pebble ports, crushed below the critical size range, and returned to the mill. An external crusher would cause no increase in mill liner wear, the wear on the crusher would be less expensive than the wear on the steel balls, and the flexibility of the grinding circuit operations would be enhanced since the crusher can be cut into and out of the circuit at will. This paper describes an autogenous grinding pilot plant investigation on a very hard copper ore, which led to the selection of an autogenous grinding flowsheet incorporating a crusher in the circuit as the preferred method for grinding this ore. Further development of the technique demonstrated that the crusher could be employed to control the product produced by an autogenous grinding unit. Description of Pilot Plant These investigations were carried out at the pilot-plant facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The autogenous grinding unit was a 6-ft-diam by 2-ft-long Hardinge Cascade mill with %-in. slotted steel grates. Pebble ports cut into the grates allowed passage of pebbles having a top size of approximately 21/2 in. The grate and pebble-port discharge material passed over a 3/16-in, trommel screen with the trommel under -size being pumped to the classification device. DSM screens were employed for classification in the early investigations, but were replaced later by a small Dorr rake classifier. The trommel oversize material returned to the mill via scissor conveyors. When the crusher was incorporated into the circuit, the trommel oversize material passed to a double-deck vibrating screen fitted with 2-in. and 3/4-in. square mesh screen cloths. The $ 2-in. and the —2 +3/4-in. size fractions were combined and crushed to a nominal 1 in. in a 4 x 6-in. jaw crusher. The crusher discharge and the —3/4-in. screen undersize returned to the mill. In the final investigation, a flap gate fitted to the top deck of the screen directed the — 21/2 +2-in. size fraction to the crusher or back to the grinding mill. The flap gate operated manually on a 15-min cycle, with this material being crushed for so many minutes out of each cycle. This was found to be a more reliable method of controlling the amount of — 21/2 +2-in. material crushed than attempting to make a split of a small weight of material on a continuous basis. Operational Techniques: Each sample was sized into three fractions and the Cascade mill feed was reconstituted from these size fractions in the proportions existing in the original sample. Sufficient feed for 15 min operation was weighed out and fed by hand over a 15-min period. The gross mill power draft was recorded every 15 min, corrected for tare power and drive efficiency, and reported as net kilowatt-hours per ton. A recording kilo-watt-hour meter provided a continuous visual record of the power drawn by the mill. Pulp densities of the trommel undersize and the classifier overflow (or DSM undersize) were taken every 15 min. The classifier overflow was sampled automatically. Timed samples of the classifier sands were taken every 15 or 30 min, weighed, and returned to the circuit. After correcting for moisture content, the weights were converted into percent circulating load. The strengthening effects of hydroxide and synthetic plastic films in the creep of cadmium crystals were studied. The results were broadly consistent with the naive mechanical model. The dislocation-film reactions and the significance of the macroscopic stresses associated with certain films are discussed in the paper. ALTHOUGH a number of studies have been made of the strengthening of metal single crystals produced by surface films usually less than Ir in thickness, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are still not well established. Roscoe' first noted the critical shear stress and the stress-strain curve of cadmium-crystal wires to be raised markedly by the presence of oxide films. Subsequent investigators2-' have confirmed the effect for several metals and films including a number of plated poly-crystalline metal films. Harper and Cottrel1" with a thin film on zinc presumed to have formed as a result of etching and washing treatments) did not detect a strengthening at a rate of extension of 10 ' sec-' although at lo-' sec-' the film raised the flow stress by 7 pct at 0.0005 extension and by 22 pct at 0.01. The marked strengthening at moderate strains thus appeared to be the result of a dynamical effect dependent on the rate and amount of plastic flow. Other observations'. " are consistent with this view. The large effects of films on the tensile creep rate of single crystals were demonstrated when the observation of Andrade and Randall," that the creep rate of cadmium crystals increased on immersion in aaueous solutions of certain cadmium salts. was shown' * to hold only when a film was present initially and was explained by the attack of the solution on the film and the removal of its strengthening effect. Changes in the creep rate interpretable in terms of the removal or formation of various films have been observed by other investigators.3,8,10,31 Certain other experiments have been reported in which surface films or liquid environments have affected the plastic behavior of metals, but these are not within the scope of the present work which deals with the effect of solid films on single-crystal slip. Possible Mechanisms—The film does not significantly reduce the load on the crystal in the elastic range (the elastic moduli of film and crystal are not too greatly different and the area of the film is so small that its share of the load is negligible) so that the initial operation of internal Frank-Read sources is not affected. However, as Fisher" has pointed out, a source terminating on the crystal surface requires only half the critical stress for activation as an internal source of the same length and a relatively strong film (even a very thin one) would pin the free ends of the surface sources so that, if surface sources are responsible for plastic flow in a clean crystal. such a film would increase by roughly a factor of 2 the stress necessary for generation of dislocation loops at a given rate. The other general possibility is that the film resists the passage to the crystal surface of internally generated dislocations. If the film is adherent and if the specimen is to exhibit slip of the same general character as a film-free specimen, the film must deform or fail in shear at the active slip planes. The American Society of Chemical Engineers and the American Ceramic Society have for some years past devoted especial attention to the educational matters of their respective fields. The Engineering Foundation, representing the great engineering societies of the country, is deeply interested in technical education and maintains a Committee on Educational Research.
