By means of a finite difference expansion a fluid flow field in cylindrical coordinates with axial symmetry, is simulated by a network of electrical resistors. A series of DC analog computing units, connected to the network bounrlary corresponding to the free surface effectively adjust the network parameterr to satisfy simultaneously Laplace's equation and the borrndary conditions. The system automatica1ly "re1axes" to the correct boundary shape in a fraction of a second. A detailed application of the method to the water coning problem in oil wells is presented. INTRODUCTION The water coning problem in petroleum production is a prime example of a class of problems known as free surface problems. A free surface arises in fluid flow regions when the shape of the boundary of a single phase flow region is affected in some manner by the pressure or potential gradients within the region. When there exists an interface of two fluids of different densities, the shape of this interface will be determined by the relative velocities of the two fluids and will therefore comprise a free surface. Other free surface problems of interest to petroleum engineers include the gas coning, water injection, and gravity drainage probIcms. In each case it is desired to predict the shape of the boundary of the oil zone as a function of the flow rate, the well penetration and the physical parameters and dimensions of the system. Such problems do not lend themselves to the classical analytical treatments of boundary value problems because in this case the boundary of the potential field and the potential distribution within the field are interdependent and must be calculated simultaneously. A further difficulty arises from geometric considerations. Since the fluid flow is of the radial type in most cases, such effective methods as conformal transformation and the hodograph are not applicable. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method whereby free surface problems of this type may be solved rapidly to the desired order of accuracy by means of a combination of a network of electrical resistors and conventional analog computer units. The water coning problem is treated in some detail. Then the procedure for extending the technique to other free surface problems is indicated. FORMULATION Most commercial oil reservoirs consist of an oil-saturated sand, bounded above by an impermeable strata and below by a water-saturated sand. Gravimetric separation results in a horizontal oil-water interface. When an oil well is drilled so that it partially penetrates the oil zone, and production is initiated at a constant rate, the oil-water interface will assume a new shape as a result of the pressure gradients in the oil zone. It should be emphasized that this is a steady phenomenon. After an initial transient period the water phase will be completely static and only the oil will be in motion. The new steady-state shape of the interface, as shown in Fig. 1, depends upon the depth of penetration, d, the thickness of the oil zone, I, the production rate, q, the hydraulic permeability zone of the sand, k, the viscosity of the oil, µ, and the densities of the oil and water, p.,. and pw.. A capsule technique was successfully employed to investigate the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni-N austenite in the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. This technique consisted of equilibrating nitrogen among various Fe-Ni alloys within a sealed silica capsule. Nitrogen transfer among the specimens occurred by N, gas at 900°, lOOO? and 1200?C. Nitrogen gas pressures within the capsules were estimated to be as high as 22 atm. The activity coefficient of nitrogen, fN , in Fe-Ni-N austenite is adequately described by the linear interaction equation: log . wt pct Ni where the standard state is chosen such that fN = I as wt pct Napproaches zero in binary Fe-N. This relationship was determined over the temperature range 873" to 1473°K and for nickel contents of 0 to 35 wt pct. ALTHOUGH chemical thermodynamics of liquid iron alloys have been extensively studied, experimental data for the solid state are needed. These thermody-namic data will provide a basis for understanding phase transformations, precipitation reactions, metal-gas equilibria, and so forth. The interaction of sub-stitutional alloying elements with the interstitial elements is of particular interest. In this investigation the thermodynamic behavior of Fe-Ni-N austenite has been studied. The solubility of nitrogen gas in iron austenite is known to obey Sieverts&apos; law up to about 65 atm.1-6 In addition, the solubility of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite has been investigated5"8 using the classical method of equilibrating Fe-Ni alloys with nitrogen gas at 1 atm. A capsule technique similar to that used to study the activity of carbon in alloyed austeniteg&apos;&apos;&apos; was employed in the present work to determine the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite over the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of Fe-Ni alloys up to 35 wt pct Ni was vacuum melted and cast into 1 by 3 by 6 in. ingots. Chemical analyses at the top and bottom of each ingot demonstrated that the ingots were homogeneous with respect to nickel content. The nickel contents are given in Table I. Additional chemical analyses showed that wt pct Si < 0.05, s < 0.01, C < 0.01, Al < 0.006, 0 < 0.004, Mn < 0.002, and P < 0.002. A 2 in. section of each ingot was cold rolled to 0.015 in. The material was then decarburized to a carbon content of less than 0.004 wt pct. A portion of the material of each nickel content was nitrided to various levels in a H2-NH3 gas atmosphere to provide a source of nitrogen during subsequent equilibration. The experimental technique consisted of equilibrating the series of Fe-Ni-N alloys in a partially evacuated sealed silica capsule at the temperature of interest. Both Vycor and quartz capsules were used. In general, the final equilibrium nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was approached from both higher and lower nitrogen levels. The criterion for establishing that equilibrium was attained was that the final nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was the same irrespective of the initial level. A schematic drawing of the sample configuration in a capsule is shown in Fig. 1. The samples were arranged so that there was a minimum of physical contact. The samples were also dusted with a fine, high purity alumina powder to help prevent sticking. Several different types of furnaces were used in this study. In each case, a thermocouple was placed immediately adjacent to the capsule during equilibration and the temperature was controlled to within *4?C of that reported. At each equilibration temperature, the following times were found to be more than sufficient to attain equilibrium: 600°C-250 hr, 900°C-150 hr, 1000°C-150 hr, and 1200°C-50 hr. After equilibration the capsules were quenched in water and the nitrogen contents of the specimens determined by a Strohlein analyzer. Analyses of samples after equilibration at 1000" and 1200°C showed no silicon pickup from the silica capsules. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transfer Mechanism. The mechanism by which nitrogen was transferred among specimens in an initially hydrogen flushed and partially evacuated capsule equilibrated at 1000°C was investigated. Higher freight rates and better methods of beneficiation now may make it more economical to open inferior deposits closer to a glass factory than to work higher-grade deposits farther away. Nature of impurities and special treatments as well as common practice of sulphuric acid leaching are described. HISTORICAL concepts of the economics of the glass-sand industry are changing rapidly. The greatly expanded demand for glass containers combined with higher freight rates on raw materials and manufactured products have induced a migration of glass factories toward densely populated centers and the creation of new standards of place value for substandard sand deposits. This migration has been facilitated by the construction of pipelines to bring cheaper natural gas and liquid fuel to large cities and may be further speeded by the adoption of modern mineral dressing methods to permit economical utilization of local raw materials. Our national resources of naturally high-grade silica sand are abundant, but most of the best deposits are situated so far from large centers of population that it now costs $3.00 to $5.00 a ton to carry the sand from the mine to the optimum site for a factory making beverage bottles, scientific and electrical glassware, and miscellaneous blown and pressed ware for local markets. It follows that on the basis of freight savings alone it may be economical to use material from inferior deposits closer to the factory even though the f.O.b. cost of mining and treatment may be much higher than at a higher grade deposit farther away. Particle-size distribution is a feature of glass-sand specifications. As long as glassmakers insisted upon having their sand principally coarser than 100-mesh, any material was automatically excluded from consideration that could not be purified without fine grinding or other drastic treatment which greatly reduces the size of the quartz grains. However, re- cent large-scale tests in Norway&apos; showed that finely-crushed quartz used in a soda-lime-silica glass batch caused it to melt and become refined appreciably faster than when ordinary coarse (Belgian) sand was employed. Dust losses were negligible. Since the pre-war cost of sand was only 3 pct of the manufacturing cost of the glass, it was deemed economical to pay twice as much for crushed quartz because of the saving in wear and tear on the furnace walls. In the author&apos;s unverified opinion, sand ranging in size between 150 and 400-mesh would probably be superior to that in the more usual range of 20 to 100-mesh. Former objections to fine sand (other than dust) were doubtless fostered by the natural concentration of impurities in the finer sizes. Ordinarily the most objectionable, as well as the commonest, impurity from the standpoint of the manufacturer of any but the cheaper qualities of colored glass is iron. No natural sands are really pure silica. Even water-clear quartz crystals are likely to contain impurities in the form of solid solution as well as inclusions which cannot be eliminated except by chemical treatment that will break down the silica lattice. Pure white pegmatite quartz will usually analyze 0.01 pct or more of iron oxide, and ordinary vein quartz and the quartz grains in most

The Bureau of Mines has used various sizes of core barrels above 2 in. and below 10 in. in diameter to core manganese, potash, coal, brown iron ore and bauxite. The paper describes in some detail the methods and types of equipment used to obtain maximum sampling accuracy. Introduction On December 11, 1946, R. D. Longyear, in his capacity as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Exploration Drilling, wrote the author requesting him to prepare a paper presenting the collective ideas of engineers in the Bureau of Mines on the design, standardization and application of core barrels using diamonds or other hard cutting media for drilling holes larger than two inches and less than ten inches in diameter. In subsequent correspondence it was indicated that similar papers covering the experience of other government agencies would be solicited and all such papers received would be combined in a symposium on the subject for discussion at the March 1947 meeting of the Mining Methods Committee AIME. In soliciting such information from other Bureau engineers, it developed that most Bureau experience had been confined to standard core size, two inches or less in diameter, and that larger sizes had been used only for special purposes. It is hoped the data contained herein will be of help to other operators in solving problems encountered in the field. Acknowledgments This paper was made possible by the request of Lowell B. DURING an investigation of solid-solution hardening of nickel by carbon,&apos; we found that there were no reliable data on the dilating effect of dissolved carbon on the unit cell of nickel. Bernier2 reported an increase in lattice parameter of nickel (3.523A) when an unknown amount of carbon was introduced into solid solution (3.536A). Similarly KG, Tsien, and Misek3 found an increase from 3.523 to 3.531A when nickel was carburized. strong4 studied the variation of nickel lattice constant as a function of dissolved carbon. However, in his case carbon was introduced into nickel by solidifying the melt at 65 kbar. Therefore, his carbon concentrations were much above the highest equilibrium solubility limit5 (2.7 at. pct C at 1 atm). Knowledge of the lattice mismatch between solute and solvent is essential in understanding the mechanism of solid-solution hardening. Therefore, we decided to determine the dilation of the nickel lattice by carbon under the more usual conditions of atmospheric pressure. The material used was Inco Electrolytic Nickel of 99.95 pct purity, as specified by the supplier. The impurity contents in wt pct were: Fe, 0.01; Cu, 0.01; Co, 0.03; 0, 0.005; C, Si, S, N, trace. To this base material various amounts of AUC-grade high-purity carbon were added during vacuum induction casting. Ingots, 2 in. in diam, were heated in a muffle furnace at 1000°C for i hr., hot-rolled to 1/2-in. thickness, and quenched into brine. All ingots with carbon concentration greater than 0.98 at. pct were enclosed in a cast iron box during the heating to minimize decar-burization. Small pieces were then either swaged down to 0.028-in.-diam wire or cold-rolled to 0.010-in.-thick sheets. After the final cold reduction in area of 50 pct, the specimens were recrystallized by heating in evacuated capsules at 1100°C for 60 to 80 sec and then quenched into brine. A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the&apos; rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. Somewhat over ten years ago the author described studies1&apos;2 on the constitution of the copper-silicon system. The copper-rich portion of this diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The experimental points freely dotted about the diagram seemed to justify an otherwise unconvincing diagram and for several years the curious reverse bend in the alpha-phase boundary was accepted as substantially correct, even by later investigators3 of the system who introduced changes in the high-silicon phases. The binary diagram has been used as a base for several ternary systems5-9 without any suggested changes. Voce10 suspected the existence of another phase from his study of the cast alloys in the copper-manganese-silicon system, but evidently hesitated to extrapolate this to the binary diagram, particularly in view of the too ingenious explanation that was advanced1&apos; to account for the pools of constituent clearly visible in castings; namely, that they were secondary alpha of twinned orientation deposited from beta. Von Schwarz,12 in 1932, called attention to the fact that this micro-constituent in copper-silicon alloy castings was anisotropic under polarized light and asserted that a new phase, not cubic, should be placed in the diagram .adjacent to alpha. Sautner,l3 on the basis of investigations with the polarizing microscope and with X-rays, introduced this phase into the diagram at about 6 per cent Si. The relevant part of his diagram is shown in Fig. 2. Sautner called the new phase beta, renaming the old beta phase zeta. To avoid confusion, in redrawing Fig. 2 the phases have been renamed in accordance with the terminology adopted in the present paper, in which the new phase is called kappa and the other phases retain the designation given them by Arrhenius and Westgren.4 The thermodynamic impossibility of Sautner&apos;s diagram and the paucity of experimental data left the exact location of the new phase field most uncertain, although his work proved beyond doubt that an additional noncubic phase exists. INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of heat-weakening of rock with 10.6 micron radiation from a continuous-wave C02 gas laser has been investigated in detail at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for over 5 years. The programs at MIT have explored the basic nature of the heat-weakening phenomena and rock fracture caused by heating (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), and have resulted in quantitative estimates of the relationship between the amount and parer level of heating and the resulting decrease in the modulus of rupture of a rock beam in a three-point bend test (Ref. 3). Results of the tests reported in Ref. 3 indicate a greater than 90% reduction in the modulus of rupture for granite beams heat-weakened by a laser. These results prompted the U. S. Department of Transportation to seek an assessment of the expected feasibility of employing the heat- weakening concept in a full-scale tunnel boring operation. Present- day continuous rock-tunneling machines have demonstrated tunneling time and cost savings over drill-and-blast methods, when used in rock types that are easily broken by the cutters. INTRODUCTION THE kinetics and mechanism of transfer of a constituent across a slag-metal interface are fundamentally important because many metallurgical processes involve the existence of a slag phase and a metal phase. Industrial processes seldom proceed to equilibrium, and information of the rates and modes of reactions are therefore often of greater practical importance than equilibrium data. A study of the kinetics of sulphur transfer across a slag-metal interface under reducing conditions will contribute a great deal toward a better understanding of desulphurization in the blast furnace process. The general principles existing in the transfer of a constituent, such as sulphur, across a slag-metal interface can be extended to similar transfer phenomena in other metallurgical processes. The present paper will demonstrate how such studies will lead to fruitful results from both the practical and theoretical standpoints. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used was simple. A graphite crucible 1 5/8-in. id, a wall 1/8-in. thick, and a depth of 4 in., was packed in an outer fused silica tube with powdered magnesia. The crucible assembly was rotated at a speed of 235 rpm inside an induction coil. A charge of 250 g of Armco ingot iron was introduced into the graphite crucible and melted by induction heating. The melt was held at a desired temperature [ ] for 3-5 min., after which 7.5 g of granular ferrous sulphide was added and the bath was held for another 3-5 min. A metal sample was then taken by means of a fused silica tube and a rubber suction bulb. Immediately after the metal sample was taken, 30 g of a prefused and crushed slag were introduced. The presence in the Tennessee Valley of extensive deposits of olivine, a silicate of magnesium and iron that contains approximatcly 28 per cent magnesium, has been recognized since 1896 when Lewis8 published a survey of basic magnesium rocks of western North Carolina. A recent field survey by T.V.A.7 showed that more than two hundred million tons of high-grade olivine occurs above local drainage levels in western North Carolina and northern Georgia. Except for sporadic attempts to work the olivine for its nickel and chromium contents,10 the ore received little attention industrially until 1926 when Goldschmidt3 suggested its use in the manufacture of refractories. Only one instance is recorded of an attempt to utilize the ore commercially for its magnesium content;11 in this case a process was used in which olivine was treated with sulphuric acid, the resultant mixture was leached with water, and the leach solution was purified and evaporated to form epsom salts, which was the end product. As a part of its program of contributing to the development of the natural resources of the region, the Tennessee Valley Authority became interested in the olivine deposits as a source of metallic magnesium because of their high magnesium content and proximity to hydroelectric power. Studies were undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing magnesium chloride by extraction of olivine. The experimental work was carried out successively at the T.V.A. Minerals Testing Laboratory, Norris, Tenn., at the Georgia State Engineering Station,* Atlanta, Ga., and at the T.V.A. laboratory at Wilson Dam, Ala. The present paper describes a process, developed through the pilot-plant stage, whereby magnesium chloride suitable for reduction to metallic magnesium can be prepared from olivine by extraction with hydrochloric acid and subsequent purification. Research on the magnesium-from-olivine process, originally intended for peacetime use, was given impetus by the shortage of magnesium that existed at the beginning of the current world war. By the time the process was sufficiently developed to justify a proposal for its inclusion in the war program, the shortage had been met by expansion and development of other processes. However, it is believed that the magnesium-from-olivine process may have advantages that will warrant consideration of its use after the war, when the. economics of the various processes rather than production on a wartime scale will be the criterion for commercial production of magnesium. The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse. VAIONT RESERVOIR SLIDE Fig. 1 shows Vaiont Dam in Italy which is a double curvature arch, 875 ft high, located on a tributary of the Piave River, north and west of Venice. When completed in 1960 it was the highest arch dam in the world. In 1960 a sizable landslide (some 700,000 cu yd) occurred on the left abutment a short distance above the dam. Following this, the reservoir was held down for construction of a by-pass tunnel through the right valley wall to insure connection with the upper end of the reservoir in event of further slides. In October 1963 a giant landslide occurred on the left valley wall, over a width of some 14 miles (see Fig. 2). Over 300 million cu yd slid into the reservoir, displacing the water and forming a hige wave 700 ft above the top of the dam as it hit the opposite, or right, wall of the valley. The wave then passed some 500 ft over top of the dam, followed down the tortuous winding canyon and debouched into the

In preparing this paper it has been the aim of the writer to keep the problems of both producers and consumers in mind. Until now, no attempt has been made to familiarize each group with the other&apos;s practice and limitations. This paper is an effort to acquaint the readers with some of the factors pertaining to the problem and cost of mining and preparing steam coal, and also to the economics of producing steam with such coal. In recent years all lines of endeavor have turned to intensive mechanization in order to lower the unit cost of production. The average fuel consumption in steam electric generating stations has dropped in 20 years from 4.0 lb. to 1.4 lb. per kilowatt-hour; while the modern power station can generate 1 kw-hr. on a fraction under 1 lb., or 13,000 B.t.u. coal. Also, the amount produced per man has in that same period risen from 3.8 to 8.2 tons, owing to the use of modernized equipment below ground for coal cutting, drilling, shooting, loading, hauling and hoisting. Unfortunately, the rapid speed of 5 tons per minute of operation at which the coal is loaded mechanically precludes any appreciable removal of impurities at the coal face, so that the raw coal is hoisted containing a markedly higher percentage of impurities than the hand-loaded coal, which was subjected to the scrutiny of the miner during loading. Also, during the past 20 years, certain seams of coal lying close to the surface have been made economically available by the improved design of electrically operated shovels and draglines for the removal of overburden running as high as 56 ft. This strip coal frequently contains so much ash in the raw state (Table 1) that it would have no sales value. Therefore, coal preparation must be adopted to beneficiate the raw product. Some seams in the United States have a decreasing ash content with decreasing size, owing, in all probability, to the fact that the coal is friable while the impurities are hard, causing a concentration of the low-ash material in the fine sizes. Illinois No. 6 coal being rather hard, naturally the reverse is true.

ONLY recently has it been realized that preferred orientations are common in hot-rolled steels. In a recent paper, N. P. Goss1 stated that hot-rolled mild steel exhibits a texture different from that charac-teristic of cold-rolled steel. No complete study of these hot-rolling textures has been reported using the pole-figure method of Wever. The material used in the work reported in this paper was the same material used by Gensamer and Mehl2 in a recent study of preferred orientations in cold-rolled steel, to which reference may be made for the composition and thermal history of the steel. Automobile-body sheet bar, 4 in. thick was hot-rolled at two temperatures, 780° and 910° C. (1436° and 1669° F.). (These temperatures refer to the tempera-ture of the furnace in which the steel was heated.) After each pass the steel was returned to the furnace and held there long enough to return to temperature. Although no accurate method was used to measure the temperature after each pass, it was estimated by color that only a slight drop in temperature occurred. In order to determine the effect of any preferred orientation that might have persisted through the normalizing treatment, one specimen at each temperature was rolled in the same direction as the original working direction and the other at right angles to it. The total reduction in each case was 85 per cent, the specimens having been reduced from 0.250 to 0.0375 in. in five passes. Final cooling was in air. Pinhole reflection photograms were taken of all four specimens, with the rolling direction vertical and the X-ray beam at an angle of 7° with the transverse direction (the transverse direction is defined as that direction in the rolling plane perpendicular to the rolling direction). These photograms, taken with a Me target at 35 kv., are reproduced in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
