Under sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of balls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists in the coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otllerwise prepared for use. Pyrites in Microscopic Particles All coals that have been examined by the author contained a varying amount of sulfur in very small globules, or particles, of pyrite. These particles are seen in a thin [section as roughly rounded opaque dots, Figs. 1 to 10. When isolated, they are generally shown to be approximately spherical in shape, with a rough outer surface. They vary in diameter from a few microns to a hundred microns, the majority messuring from 25 to 40 microns; relatively few exceed the latter diameter. They are, therefore, very small objects. Their size is best appreciated by comparing the illustrations, in which they are shown. at a magnifiea tion of 100 diameters, with some known area like the period used in the ordinary printed page. The period is about 0.6 mm. in diameter, and . when magnified 100 times, will cover a circular area of about 2 1/2 in. in diameter, or all but the corners of the illustrations. The illustrations, therefore, represent an area about as large as an ordinary period, and the pyrite globules form but a small part of the total area. IN the southern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, many of the coal seams dip at angles of 40° to 50° from the horizontal. For transportation purposes, "tunnels" are driven across the coal measures and, occasionally, "rock gangways," beside the seams and parallel with them. The use of gangways driven in country rock appears to be increas-ing, as they avoid the maintenance' of long gangways in coal, which eventually are driven to the colliery boundaries, and permit mining from a number of intermediate blocks without interference. The rock consists of slates or sandstones of moderate hardness, which may range into very hard, highly siliceous, fine-grained conglomerates. In this distinctly bedded formation,' the direction of the heading, whether parallel with or across the structure, makes it necessary to distribute the drill holes in a different pattern to break the ground, but does not change loading conditions. In 1932, practically all the mucking was done by hand, and it was the established custom to use four men on two drills for drilling and breaking the ground, and five for loading it, out. A driver and mule was needed in addition, to assemble the rock cars at a siding or branching track in the rear, pending their final disposal. This might occupy the driver's whole time, or if the length of haul were short, he might be able to do other useful work. It was thought possible in 1932 to reduce the cost of driving such headings in rock by mechanical loading, and to investigate this subject a scraper loader was used in a section of tunnel then being driven. Opera-tions while driving 195 ft. of this tunnel using a scraper loader were care-fully observed. Time studies were made of the loading, and records made of the routine of breaking ground, but not in such detail. Tunnels or gangways in the colliery are 7 ft. high above the rails, by 10 ft. wide, which requires a minimum of 8 ft. in height, broken to allow for rails and ties. This cross section is of sufficient size to permit the use of any one of several types of power loaders, but for this demonstration if was found most convenient to use a scraper loader.

To those who have had the happy privilege of friendship with George W. Goetz, the announcement of his death has brought great sadness. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, February 17, 1855, and died January 15, 1897. In his boyhood days, when I first came to know him, his frank, trustful manner; his eyes brimming with truthfulness; his eagerness, never obtrusive, to gain knowledge from all whom he met; and his equal readiness to give without ostentation of his store, constituted a personality which at once commanded confidence and won friendship. I am told that as a scholar of five years he was conspicuous for brightness, a show-pupil, who was called on to recite when visitors were present at school. Yet this in no way spoiled him. His modesty was too strong a trait in his character to be overcome by any attention which might, be expected to arouse vanity. In his simple-heartedness he was pleased then, as he always was in his maturer years, to give of his knowledge for the gratification of his listeners, with never a thought of himself. So strong was this characteristic that in a brief autobiography, in the form of a letter to his wife and children, found among his papers, he excuses himself to them for recounting what he had accomplished in his life-work. As a preface to this autobiography (which, it seems, was prepared on the eve of a sudden journey to California, taken February, 1895, for his health) he says: " I am writing this rather hastily, and I

FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

The assay or estimation of the total gold content of an ore presents little difficulty, when circumstances permit of securing a thoroughly representative sample. The general practice has been fairly standardized, and such errors as occur in the results obtained are for the most part attributable to the methods of sampling rather than to those of assaying, while duplicate assays made by skilled workers usually agree closely. When it is a question of estimating the "free" or amalgamable gold of an ore, as opposed to the total gold, there is but little uniformity in the methods employed by different workers, and often equally little in the results obtained when duplicate determinations are attempted, no satisfactory standard method having been generally adopted. The methods in use are of two general types—"panning" and "amalgamation." Panning For the estimation of the value of the visible gold by panning or washing, a weighed sample may be taken, ranging from an ounce to several pounds; a kilogram or 2 lb. is a favorite quantity for laboratory tests, while a prospector often uses a full miners' pan, say nearly 20 lb. or 10 kg. In the case of rich quartz, ground to about 30 or 40 mesh, a Mexican horn is convenient, using 1 to 8 02;. of material, and a 6-in. frying pan is favored by many prospectors in dry districts. Bateas, plaques, and dishes of various patterns are used for the same purpose. With these, fairly close results may be obtained by using for ocular comparison standards consisting of weighed amounts of gold of similar character as regards purity, fineness of division, and the general shape of the particles, which standards are preferably obtained from gold of the same locality, or the same deposit, as the ore or gravel being tested. Men working in one particular district sometimes become surprisingly expert in thus judging the value of an ore by the eye, the weights of both ore and gold being guessed. On the other hand, many have been led to overestimate the value of ore and gravel from unfamiliar localities, where the gold has been very finely divided or of unusually high silver content, and a novice may

In this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a minimum amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. Lime Plant When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

Under existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes. Surface Contamination The experience gained by microscopic study of numerous gold ores and tailings has shown that there are pronounced differences in the physical characteristics of the minerals composing them, more especially of the gold. Repeated studies of tailings from flotation and cyanidation of gold ores has established the fact that surface contaminations on gold particles are often directly responsible for high gold losses; comparison of gold particles isolated from flotation concentrates and the resulting tailings have showed that the clean gold has been recovered and the tarnished or contaminated gold invariably lost in the tailing. Obviously, it is not possible to make such a comparison of gold ores treated by cyanidation, as the clean gold has been taken into solution; but when the gold found in cyanide tailing has a tarnished or coated surface, one may infer, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that the clean gold has been extracted. This premise is supported by experimental evidence obtained by isolating particles of tarnished gold and exposing them to cyanide solution in small parting cups. In one such experiment, tarnished gold particles picked from a cyanide tailing showed but slight evidence 01 dissolving at the end of 27 days. T. M. Morris (School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.)—Rate studies promise to help quantify flotation operations. The author's exposition of rate studies is therefore laudable. However his exposition of a second order rate equation rather than a first order rate equation is not convincing. It is important to use the correct equation, otherwise erroneous conclusions may be drawn. The data assembled by the author and plotted according to a second order rate equation can be plotted according to a first order rate equation. As a matter of fact much of the data used reveals that a second order rate equation is not applicable. According to the method used by the author for plotting data, the reciprocal of the slope of the line is the maximum possible recovery. Physically this cannot exceed 100 pct, yet several graphs yield maximum recoveries greater than 100 pct. For example: l—Curve 2, Fig. 1 yields a value of 120 pct; 2—Curve 2, Fig. 2 yields a value of 115 pct; 3—Fig. 7 yields a value of 110 pct. The real test of the graphical method is, as the author points out, whether or not the earliest points agree with a straight line. The second order rate plot does not fulfill this requirement. Fig. 10 shows the data used by the author to obtain Curve 2 in Fig. 1, plotted according to both a second and first order rate equation. Fig. 11 shows the two rate plots made from data published by Ludt and DeWitt.19 In Fig. 10 the first order rate plot gives a very good fit and obeys the boundary condition of passing through the origin. For the second order rate plot a straight line can be drawn through the last three points but the earliest points are not in agreement with this line. The reciprocal of the slope of the straight line gives a value of maximum possible recovery of 112 pct. The maximum possible recovery according to the first order rate plot is 78 pct. In Fig. 11 the first order rate plot again fits all of the points very well and passes through the origin. The second order rate plot shows wide deviation of the earliest point, indicating that the second order rate equation is not applicable. The reason for the fit of data to the second order rate equation during longer flotation times is that R, the cumulative percent recovery, changes slowly toward the end of the flotation operation, so that when t/R is plotted against time, one is, in effect plotting t against t and one would certainly expect a straight line. The author attempts to show that the second order rate equation is correct by citing evidence which shows that recovery is a function of initial concentration. This is a debatable point especially since, in the author's original presentation of this paper at the St. Louis

There are three main oil areas in Bolivia (Fig. 1) although so far only one has yielded petroleum in commercial quantities. The Sub-Andean zone is along the easternmost ranges of the Andes, bordering the large eastern and northeastern lowlands. It extends from the Peruvian frontier, north of Lake Titicaca in a southeasterly direction towards the city of Santa Cruz and from there southward to the Argentine border. This zone forms a belt about 1200 km. long by 100 km. wide, and comprises a series of parallel, very rugged, low ranges. Oil has been known and utilized by the natives in these regions since colonial times, from the large number of seepages, which in modern times have led to the discovery of many fields. The second oil zone of Bolivia lies along the eastern and southern borders of Lake Titicaca, on the Andean high plateau, at an average altitude of 13,000 ft. above sea level. It comprises an area of approximately one million hectares (2,470,000 acres). Several seepages are known here, but little development has taken place, because of the difficulties encountered, as the greater part of the territory is covered by volcanic tuffs and ashes, which conceal the structure underneath. The third area is called the "Central zone," and is in the heart of the country, in the Department of Cochabamba, covering approximately five million hectares (12,350,000 acres). This area consists mainly of broad valleys flanked by low rolling ranges. Natural seepages are not known to exist, but there are secondary evidences of the presence of oil. The outcropping rocks are mainly Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian sandstones and shales). Albertite and other forms of polymerized petroleum have been found in this region. Of these three main oil areas, only the first one is at present productive on a small commercial scale. This zone, developed almost exclusively by the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, is divided from south to north into the following local fields: 1. In January, 1964, three years of laboratory and pilot plant test work reached its culmination. The San Manuel Div. of the Magma Copper Co. switched its molybdenite extraction circuit from the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process to the new process described in this paper. The San Manuel Div. Concentrator of the Magma Copper Co. is located near San Manuel, Ariz., approximately 45 miles northeast of Tucson. The concentrator treats approximately 35,000 tons of ore per day containing about 0.85% copper and 0.025% molybdenite. The San Manuel ore body is a disseminated copper deposit in quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite; minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite and covellite are also present in varying degrees. Pyrite makes up somewhat more than half the sulfide content of the rock. The molybdenite is nearly always found on fracture faces or associated with quartz veinlets.' On January 9, 1964, the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process that had been used for molybdenite recovery was replaced by the following process: 1) A conditioning step with hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate. 2) A two stage rougher flotation step with stove oil and sodium ferrocyanide. 3) One cleaning step with sodium ferrocyanide. 4) One cleaning step with sodium hypochlorite and potassium ferricyanide. 5) Four cleaning steps with an anti-foam Exfoam 636 and potassium ferricyanide. COPPER CONCENTRATOR Since molybdenite recovery is closely allied with previous steps in the operation, the copper concentrator will be briefly described first. The ore is ground to approximately 5% plus 65-mesh and 65% minus 200-mesh in a two-step grinding circuit consisting of rod mills in open circuit and ball mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. A straight forward rougher circuit producing only one concentrate is used. The rougher concentrate is combined with the discharge from the regrind ball mills and is then cycloned, with the overflow going directly to the cleaner circuit and the underflow going to the regrind mills. The feed to the cleaner circuit is approximately 90% to 94% minus 325 mesh. The cleaner circuit consists of two stages in which the tailing from the final cleaner stage is returned to the primary cleaner and the primary cleaner tailing is returned to the rod mill discharge at the head of the circuit. Approximately 0.013 lb of the allyl ester of amyl xanthate (S-3302) per ton of ore is added to the rod mills and approximately 0.006 lb of sodium isopropyl xanthate (2-11) per ton of ore is stage added down the rougher banks. The frother used is methyl iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) and it is added at various points in the grinding and the rougher flotation circuits. Lime is added to the ball mills and/or to the rod mills to maintain the desired pH in the rougher flotation. The rougher flotation has been operated at various pH levels between 10.5 and 11.5. Fuel oil is added in the regrind mills at a loading of approximately 0.01 lb per ton of ore. Factors Which Directly Affect Molybdenite Recovery: It has been found at San Manuel that, to obtain maximum molybdenite recovery, an oily type flotation collector must be added in the grinding circuit. When molybdenite is crystallized in the characteristic platy form, which appears to be the case almost all of the time at San Manuel, its surface has a greater tendency to adhere to oils than water. 2 Of the several oily type collectors available on the market, the allyl ester of amyl xanthate seems to be the best molybdenite promoter. The floatability of San Manuel's molybdenite does not appear to be affected, at least up to a pH of 11.5, by lime. It has been reported that at several plant operations high lime alkaline circuits have adversely affected the molybdenite recovery.3,4 It has been found through microscopic studies that the bulk of the chalcopyrite will float before the molybdenite in both the rougher and cleaner circuits. The cams at present universally used in stamp mills lift the tappets with an involute form of curve, to which the surface of the tappet is always tangent; moreover, the line of contact between tappet and cam, if produced, would pass through the center of the stem. This is no doubt a desirable feature, but the writer has long believed that it would be much more desirable if the cam were to pick up the stamp without shock, and gradually increase the upward velocity of the stamp throughout its upward movement. The involute form of cam attempts to impart instantly a considerable upward velocity to the stamp, starting it from a state of rest, and the result is a destructive blow, a great deal of noise, and much wear and vibration. The writer has developed a form of cam which will lift the stamp pith a motion similar to that of the piston of an engine between the end and middle of its stroke; in other words, harmonic motion, from the woint of zero to maximum velocity. The curve will give this ideal motion only when the stamp is set for the exact drop for which the cam was designed, but the improved cam will not be as bad as the involute cam until the drop is reduced one-half. In other words, if a cam is designed for a 6-in. drop, it will be some improvement over the usual form of cam until the drop is only 3 in. Any cam, whatever its form, must of course lift the stamp in the same number of degrees of revolution; therefore, with this new form, since the stamp starts more slowly on its upward course, it must end up by going faster, the average speed being the same as with the involute cam. The stamp, after it is no longer in contact with the cam, keeps on going up a certain distance, which is easily calculated. It is therefore possible to hang up a stamp without a cam stick, if the fingers are not more than + in. longer than necessary to hold the tappet above, the cam. With this design of cam the surface of the tappet is not tangent to the surface of the cam throughout the lift. Dr. F. W. C. Schniewind, New York, N. Y.:—Mr. Vogel speaks of briquetting the flue-dust by means of lime. I learned recently in Europe of a process employed with considerable success at one of the blast-furnaces, where blast-furnace cinder is used with lime. The lime and cinder are mixed with the flue-dust, and exposed to superheated steam, which converts the blast-furnace cinder into cement. Briquettes are then formed in the usual way. Mr. Vogel :—The process referred to is the " Scoria process," which has not been in use for some time past. For that reason, I did not mention it. Prof. Arthur L. Walker, New York, N. Y.:—I would ask the commercial name for magnesium chloride, and where it can be obtained ? Mr. VoGel :—I mentioned magnesium chloride, because it has been used abroad to a large extent. In Germany it is obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of potash-salts; in the United States we have been using chloride of lime, which is cheaper. Otto Sussman, New York, N. Obviously this trend is more important for large volume, low value mine-to-market movements of such commodities as iron ore, phosphate, potash, coal and petroleum. But, transportation is of sufficient importance to all mining activities to be included in forward planning. Civilization has been influenced by transportation developments to an extent little understood or appreciated. Although industrialists are capable of intelligent historical analysis of this phenomenon, too frequently they have failed to project, or anticipate those changes in transportation techniques which will influence the pattern of industrial growth.

The solubility of oxygen in zone-refined iron was determined in the temperature range.from 881" to 1350°C. The solubility in a iron at 881°C ms found to be about 2 to 3 ppm; in y iron, the solubility was found to increase from about 2 to 3 ppm at 950°C to about 25 ppm at 1350°C. The permeability of oxygen in an iron -0.1 pct Al alloy was determined in the y iron range, using an internal oxidation technique. By combining the permeability and solubility data, the diffzisivity of oxygen in y and a iron was calculated. The oxygen diffusivity in solid iron may be s~immarized as follows: 8820 For 6 iron and IN a recent paper, Hepworth, Smith, and Turkdogan1 reported on the solubility, permeability, and diffusivity of oxygen in 6 iron, together with permeability data for oxygen in a iron. In the present investigation, similar measurements were made in the ? phase region. In addition, a solubility measurement was performed in the a phase region to permit calculation of the diffusivity of oxygen in a, iron. References to early work on this subject are given in the previous publication.' EXPERIMENTAL Solubility Measurements. The oxygen solubility was determined by equilibrating cylindrical samples 0.3 in. diam by 14 in. long of zone-refined iron in water vapor-hydrogen gas mixtures. The zone-refined iron was prepared by B. F. Oliver of this laboratory, using an apparatus and technique described elsewhere.2'3 Six zone-melting passes were used to achieve a total impurity level of about 30 ppm. Of this 30 ppm, the combined nickel and cobalt content was about 20 ppm, oxygen was 4 ppm, and all oxidizable impurities less than 1 pprn each. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire was used for the experiments. The temperature was measured before and after each experiment with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. In the gas train, flow rates of hydrogen and argon were measured with capillary flow meters, and the resulting mixtures were passed through a column containing 90 pct oxalic acid dihydrate and 10 pct anhydrous oxalic acid to obtain predetermined ratios of H2O to H2. The vapor pressure of H2O above this mixture as a function of temperature is well-known.4 The exit gas was ana- lyzed periodically for H2O, and good agreement (+3 pct) with the calculated composition was obtained. The zone-refined iron specimens were held in the furnace for a sufficient length of time for equilibration, e.g., 18 hr at 1350°C and 1 week at 881°C, then quenched in a brine solution. After removing the surface oxide from the samples by machining, duplicate analyses were obtained by a combined vacuum fusion-infrared method; oxygen analysis was reproducible within 2 ppm. Permeability Measurements. The permeability of oxygen in alloys containing about 0.1 pct A1 was determined by internal oxidation and measurement of the subscale thickness as a function of time. The experimental alloys were prepared by adding aluminum to electrolytic iron (grade 104A plastiron) that had previously been vacuum-carbon deoxidized. The resulting ingots contained about 20 ppm O, 100 pprn C, 40 pprn Si, 50 ppm Mo, 20 ppm P, 20 ppm S, and 20 pprn Zr as the principal impurities. After hot rolling the ingots to 1-in.-thick slabs, specimens were machined from the stock in the form of rectangular plates, 4 by 5 by 2 in. The general procedure for the permeability experiments was the same as those for the solubility measurements. The specimens were cooled in a reducing atmosphere rather than quenched, however, in order to maintain a clean surface for measurement of the sub-scale thickness. This measurement was made on a polished cross section of each specimen, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. The inclusions formed at the lowest temperature 1033°C were too small to be seen with an optical microscope. An electron micrograph showing the size and shape of individual particles is shown in Fig. 1. The dark band in the picture is a boundary between two subgrains. The subscale thickness in these samples was measured with an optical microscope after heavily etching in 2 pct nital, which gave contrast between the subscale and the unoxidized zone.

The effect of changes in temperature and stress on the creep behavior of Fe-4 pct Si was investigated over the temperature range from 650° to 1175K Over the temperature range of 799° to 110l°K, the shear strain rate, ?', obeys the relationship: where K is a constant, 7 the applied shear stress, G the shear modulus, g the free activation energy for diflusion, R the gas constant, and T the absolute temperature. The results strongly suggest that the creep in this alloy is controlled by a dislocation climb mechanism. In a recent investigation, Ishida, Cheng, and Dorn1 observed that the apparent activation energy for creep of a! Fe from 480" to 775°K corresponded to that for self-diffusion. Over the magnetic transformation range (775" to 1045"K), the apparent activation energy for creep increased steeply with increasing temperature in agreement with the known decrease in the free activation energy for self-diffusion. Passing through the Curie temperature, the apparent activation energy decreased abruptly following which it then increased mildly as the temperature further increased. Inasmuch as the apparent activation energy for creep of a! Fe below the Curie transformation range of temperatures appeared to decrease with increasing values of the stress, the data were analyzed in terms of a model based on the nonconservative motion of jogged screw dislocations. But since the observed creep rate was much higher than that which could be accounted for on the basis of usual models, the authors found it necessary to assume that pipe diffusion became significant over the lower temperature range. Furthermore, the abnormally high activation energy for creep above the Curie temperature was attributed to grain boundary migration which became prevalent in this temperature range. It was thought that a number of the interesting issues that arose in the creep of a Fe might be resolved by investigating the creep of Fe-4 pct Si alloy: This alloy has about the same Curie range and therefore should give creep results that closely parallel those for a Fe and in this way provide comparable data for analysis of creep mechanisms. Furthermore, it can be annealed at higher temperatures which could provide some stabilization against grain boundary migration. In addition, it might serve to illustrate the possible effects of short-range ordering on creep.

FRED TURRELL GREENE Fred Turrell Greene was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., Nov. 22, 1872. His father, William A. Greene, was born in Providence, R. I., and his mother, Angenora Semlear, was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. Fred's early school clays were spent in Boston, whence his father moved to Canada in 1882. Attending first the Collegiate Institute in Toronto, .then the High School at Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, where he graduated, Fred progressed to the Toronto University and the Michigan College of Mines, at Houghton, where lie graduated in 1897. He secured employment almost immediately at Butte with the engineering force of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Silver Mining Co., under Chas. S. Batterman. In 1899 he went to Rossland, B. C., where he spent more than a year as mining engineer and assistant superintendent of the War Eagle Consolidated Mining and Development Co. and the Center Star Mining Company Ltd. Returning to Butte in 1900, he acted as assistant geologist for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. until 1906, when he filled a similar position in St. Paul with the Great Northern Railway for about two years. From 1908 until his tragic death on Christmas day, 1917, his headquarters were in Butte, where he enjoyed an excellent reputation -as consulting mining engineer, with a rapidly widening circle of clients. During the past four years he had been consulting engineer for the Elm Orlu and other mines controlled by Hon. W. A. Clark, and was in charge of underground developments and law-suit preparations for the celebrated apex case between the Elm Orlu and the Butte & Superior companies. At the time of his death he was in charge of similar work for the Utah Metals Co., in connection with their mines at Bingham, Utah. He was also for some years active in the Coeur d'Alenes, as consulting geologist for the Federal and other companies there, and was considered an authority on this as well as the Butte district. Mr. Greene was unmarried, and is survived by his parents, a younger brother, who is in the army, and one sister, Mrs. James A. Hatch, of New York. Some of the most important and valuable ideas regarding the nature and origin of copper ores have originated in Butte, since that district is not only one of the greatest examples of mineralization known in any land, but has gone through a long course of mining litigation, and was, one of the first to be studied intensively by geologists. In connection with the early investigations, as well as with the most recent in that camp, Mr. Greene played an important part. His conscientious devotion to his duties and his intelligent handling of the problems presented for solution sufficiently explain the esteem in which he was held by his employers and his professional associates.

The primary object of this study was to determine the effect of ferrite and its orientation upon the mechanical properties of a precipitation -hardening stainless steel with particular attention to the short-transverse properties. The investigation consisted of Jour major parts : the preliminary investigation of billet properties, the effect of forging reduction and ferrite content upon mechanical properties, the effect of notch orientation upon impact strength, and the relationship of heat composition to ferrite content. Low ductility and impact strength in the short transverse direction were found to he associated with the orientation and shape of- the ferrite plates. It was also determined that impact strength varied with notch orientation. The test values obtained with the notch perpendicular to the plane of the ferrite plate were lower than those obtained in the notch-parallel condition. The over-all investigation showed that high ferrite contents in general had a deleterious effect upon mechanical properties and that the ferrite content could he minimized by exercising rigorous control of the heat composition. A careful balance of elements, nitrogen in particular, must he maintained in order to reduce the formation of ferrite. THE precipitation-hardening stainless steels were developed to fulfill a need for high-strength corrosion-resistant alloys. In the annealed condition they are soft and ductile and possess many of the desirable characteristics of the austenitic stainless steels. In the hardened condition, the alloys exhibit the high strength and hardness of the martensitic stainless steels. The alloy under consideration in this investigation has a nominal composition as follows: C Mn Si Cr Ni Mo N 0.13 0.95 0.25 15.50 4.30 2.75 0.10 The hardening mechanism is identical to that of other hardenable steels in that it depends upon the transformation of austenite to martensite. This alloy because of its annealed structure and its ability to be hardened combines the desirable forming and corrosion properties of the austenitic grades with the high hardness and strength levels attainable with the hardenable grades. The reason for this apparent duplicity of proper- ties can be explained by considering a basic metallurgical difference between the hardenable stainless steels and those of the austenitic group. Both types are austenitic at 1800°F but, while the martensitic grades transform to martensite upon rapid cooling to room temperature, the austenitic grades remain austenitic even when cooled to temperatures below room temperature. The major difference then is in the degree of austenite stability. This stability can quantitatively be described by the Ms temperature. The Ms is defined as that temperature at which austenite begins to transform to martensite. The austenitic grades for example may be cooled to -300°F without producing significant quantities of martensite. The hardenable stainless steels on the other hand have an Ms temperature in the vicinity of 400" to 700°F. In cooling to room temperature, these alloys traverse the entire Ms-Mf range and show almost complete transformation to martensite. The semiaustenitic stainless steel, however, occupies an intermediate position with respect to its austenite stability. The analysis is so balanced that the Ills temperature lies at or slightly above room temperature. The resulting alloy retains much of its austenite at room temperature and yet responds to hardening heat treatments. Achieving this delicate balance of elements is therefore of great importance. Slight imbalances of the equivalent Cr-Ni ratios frequently result in the presence of 6 ferrite. It is the effects of this ferrit with which we are concerned, more specifically the effect of the quantity and ferrite orientation upon mechanical properties, particularly ductility. PROCEDURE A) Preliminary Investigation of Billet and Forging Properties. In order to determine the effect of ferrite on billet properties, billet stock from three heats with various ferrite contents was utilized. Tensile specimens were obtained in the transverse and longitudinal directions from this material and heat-treated as shown in Tables I and 11. Forgings were made from these same heats, the purpose being to determine what effect, if any, the ferrite might have upon the mechanical properties. These forgings were made in such a manner as to elongate the ferrite in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The method of forging was as follows. A section was cut from a 6-in.-sq billet of Heat A and flat-forged to 1-1/2 in. thick. Working was done from one direction only with no edging passes as shown
