Nickel alloys containing approximately 0.5, 2.0, and 6.0 at. pct of Os, Pd, Ru, and Rh were Prepared by vacuum melting. Tension tests were carried out at 25°, 500°, 800°, and 1000°C; stress-rupture tests were carried out at 650° and 800°C. The room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength, as well as the stress-rupture life, increased for the same atomic percent in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The ductility decreased with increasing concentration or temperature for a given concentration. The results are discussed in terms of solid-solution theory. BOTH solid-solution strengthening and weakening have been observed in alloys. The simple rules which have been suggested to explain alloy strengthening are subject to several exceptions and deviations based on atom size and valency effects. The purpose of the present investigation was to extend the knowledge of the effect of solid-solution alloying on the mechanical properties of several Ni-Pt group metal alloys at room and elevated temperatures. The platinum group metals, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, and palladium were chosen as the solute elements because of their different valencies and atom sizes. Nickel was chosen as the base material because of the large amount of previous literature available on nickel alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Grade A Carbonyl nickel powder having the following composition: C, 0.07 pct; Fe, 0.013 pct; Mn, 0.0005 pct; Si, 0.016 pct; Mg, 0.0003 pct; S, 0.003 pct, was purchased from the International Nickel Co. The platinum-group metal powders were purchased from A. D. Mackay Co. The powders were weighed, cone-blended for 4 hr, and vacuum-melted into 1-in.-diam billets, approximately 2 in. long. The ingots were homogenized for 5 hr at 1800°F before being extruded into 1/4-in. rods at 2100°F. The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values were not significantly different than that of the as-received nickel. All alloys were single phase. The lattice parameter of each alloy after the heat treatment described below is also included in Table I. Each alloy was annealed at 2200°F for 1 hr and air-quenched to comparable grain sizes (ASTM G.S. No. 4-5). The rods were then machined into test samples 0.160-in. diam and 0.750-in. gage length. Tension testing was carried out in an In-stron tension-testing machine at a strain rate of 0.02 in. per in. per min. An extensometer was used to determine the room-temperature yield stress. Stress-rupture testing was carried out in an Arc Weld stress-rupture unit. All testing was performed in air. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties. The 0.2 pct yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation for all alloys tested at room temperature are plotted as a function of atomic percent solute element in Fig. 1. The ultimate tensile strength for the same atomic percent increases in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The yield strength at low concentrations, -0.5 at. pct, increases in the order osmium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium. At higher concentrations, 3.0 and 10.0 pct, the yield strength increases in the same order as the tensile strength. Both yield strength and tensile strength increase rapidly ini-

Fort?-six- two-grain bounduries were studied in doped tungsten 1amp wire that had been heated to 3450°K very vapidly. Back-reflection Laue photograms were taken of the grain boundary partners and solved, using a computer. The resulting distribution of large-grain orientations was analyzed. Rotational axes were calculatedfor each grain boundary pair. The axes of least rotation show an anisotropy of rolalional angle. WhILE the orientations of large grains in straight doped tungsten wire have been studied extensively, little has been done to characterize the boundary that separates them. Rosi.1 upon seeing the jagged interlocking boundary in doped tungsten wire. inferred that the grains should have a preferred orientation, and proved it. He interprets his data as indicative of a single ideal orientation—(531)— being parallel to the wire axis. Rieck2, 3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Siegle argue that the data suggest that (211)—a plane-is parallel to the wire axis instead. This (211 ) contains the (531). and hence would appear to be a more general case.5 Ahlborn and wasserman6 report that their orientation data stretch from (110) through (531) to (311). This path is the locus of {211 Recently. Opinsky has suggested that the data can be interpreted as a series of ideal orientations that can be related by coincidence relationships to the (110) fiber texture. All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by the back-reflection Laue technique, and they have all obtained similar results. Only Rieck5 as methodically looked at the large grains along a wire. He was apparently not concerned with the relationships of the large grains across their common boundary, but only with their individual orientations. This research was undertaken to fill this gap in the under standing of the mechanical properties of tungsten wire. Only the crystallographic aspects of the problem will be reported here. In addition, the large number of large-grain orientations, which was accumulated in this study. will also be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUES All of the data were obtained from four pieces of the same 7-mil-diam General Electric tungsten lamp wire. Twelve-inch lengths of the cleaned wire were heated in vacuum by the flick of a switch to 90 pct of the amperes necessary for fusion (a temperature of approximately 3450°K) and held for 1 min. On the basis of other data. it is estimated that the rise time is of the order of 0.5 sec. The four pieces of wire could have come from anywhere within about 18 ft of wire. Consecutive segments of each piece of wire were mounted in bakelite and polished metallographically The polishing procedure followed that described by woods. "nly boundaries between two grains that each occupied the entire cross section of the wire were photographed and X-rayed. The metallographic sample was mounted accurately with respect to the X-ray unit. Steps were taken to read the films as accurately as possible with the conventional Greninger net. The data were then entered into computer programs that solve the Laue film by precisely the same techniques that are used in the solution of the film by means of the stereographic projection. The use of the computer has probably shifted the main source of error from the stereographic plot to the reading of the film. On the basis of several experiments, it is thought that the error associated with the entire process, from mounting the sample through the computer solution, is of the order of about one-half degree. The output of the computer is the direction cosines of the fiducial direction (the wire axis) and the locations of the three cube axes. The former data were used to calculate the differences in orientation between the two grain boundary partners, and the latter were used in the calculation of the rotational axes that could bring the two grains

The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft. elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 lb. pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 ½ miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in. Fig. 3.

THE official opening at the 134th general meeting of the Institute was held on Oct. 6, but it was prefaced by two round table conferences on Oct. 5. The open-hearth group held the fourth of their semi-annual conferences at the William Penn Hotel, devoting the morning session to discussing a paper by R. L. Cain on the "Manufacture of Forging Steel by the Open-hearth Process," and the afternoon to discussing P. H. Shaeffer's paper on the open-hearth charge. At the Bureau of Mines, a round table conference on the combustibility of coke was held on Tuesday morning, and the afternoon was devoted to a similar conference on the testing of coke. The formal opening session of the meeting assembled in the Music Hall of Carnegie Institute at 10.30 a. m. Graham Bright, chairman of the Pittsburgh Section; called the meeting to order and presided. President Taylor welcomed the visiting members and guests to his home city and reviewed briefly the advancement of mining in the past half century during which, for ex- ample, the coal output had increased from 53,280,000 tons to 523,357,000 tons per year. He emphasized the important part Pennsylvania played in mining and brought out the principal changes that had taken place in methods. In part, his remarks were as follows: The centennial year, 1876, found the coal business of. this country, as a whole, producing 53,280,000 tons, of which amount the bituminous mines of this State yielded 24 per cent. In 1925, this country produced 523,357,000 tons of coal, of which Pennsylvania produced 24 per cent.

THE separation of minerals by flotation can be regarded as a rate process, with the extraction of any one mineral determined by its flotation rate, and the grade of concentrate by the relative rates for all the minerals. So regarded, the significant variables for the process are those that control the rates. These variables are of two types, the first describing the ore and its physical and chemical treatment prior to flotation and the second characterizing the separation process in the cells. This paper will examine the variation in rates for a group of separations, will show that a simple rate law appears to govern, and will consider the relation of the control variables to the rates. The use of rate constants for evaluation of performance and efficiency will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION In this paper, a numerical process for selecting a mining method, with the emphasis on underground mass mining techniques, such as caving, induced caving, and stoping, is proposed. In the past, selection of a mining method for a new property was based primarily on operating experience at similar type deposits and on methods already in use in the district of the deposit. Then, the chosen method was modified during the early years of mining as ground conditions and ore character were bet- ter understood. Today, however, the large capital investment required to open a new mine or change an existing mining system make it imperative that the mining methods examined during the feasibility studies and the method actually selected have a high probability of attaining the projected production rates. Although experience and engineering judgment still provide major input into the selection of a mining method, subtle differences in the characteristics of each deposit, which may affect the method chosen or the mine design, can usually be perceived only through analysis of measured characteristics. The parameters that must be examined when choosing a mining method include: 1) geometry and grade distribution of the deposit; 2) rock mass strength for the ore zone, the hanging wall, and the footwall; 3) mining costs and capitalization requirements; 4) mining rate; 5) type and availability of labor; 6) environmental concerns; and 7) other site-specific considerations. This paper encompasses a detailed look at the first two parameters since they, plus mining costs, have the greatest impact on the selection of a mining method. The proposed method selection process is for a project where drilling has defined sufficient geologic reserves, but little or no underground development has been done. Since each deposit has its own characteristic geanetry/grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties, mining method selection should be at least a two-stage process. In Stage 1, the deposit is described in terms of geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics properties. Using these parameters, the mining methods can be ranked to determine which are most applicable; they can then be considered in general terms of mining and capitalization cost, mining rate, type and availability of personnel, environmental concerns, and other site-specific considerations. In Stage 2, the most likely mining methods are costed out, based on a general mine plan. Mining and capitalization costs are used to determine a cut-off grade fran which a minable reserve can be calculated; economic comparisons can then be made to determine the optimum mining method and economic feasibility. During the mine planning phase of Stage 2, rock mechanics information would be used to provide realistic estimates of underground opening size, amount of support, orientation of openings, and caving characteristics, and open pit slope angles. If ground control or operational problems should be encountered with the methods being considered, modifications could be made. Although planning on paper extends start-up time, it is cheaper to err on paper than to find the error after mining has begun. METHOD SELECTION - STAGE 1 The main purpose of Stage 1 is to select those mining methods which should be considered in greater detail. The simplest way to do this is by defining those characteristics required for each mining method and then determining whether the characteristics of the deposit are suitable. However, no one mining method is so restrictive that it can be used for only one set of characteristics, as indicated by the classification system proposed by Boshkov and Wright (1973). In the mining method selection proposed, geometry, grade distribution, and rock mechanics characteristics are ranked according to their acceptability for ten general mining methods.

UNION MINIERE D HAUT-KATAIGA operates a group of mines and metallurgical works in the Katanga province of the Belgian Congo. It is especially prominent as a copper producer, but its output of accessory metals, such as cobalt, radium, silver, tin and gold have been considerable. The Belgian Congo covers 920,000 sq. mi. of central Africa, with a native population of about 8,500,000. In addition, Belgium controls by mandate the districts of Ruanda-Urundi (formerly a part of German East Africa) with an area of some 20,000 sq. mi. and a population of about 3,500,000 natives. Most of the native population of the Belgian Congo is found on the wide fertile plains of the great rivers, living under primitive conditions in a tropical climate, where it has survived throughout the centuries in spite of tropical diseases and intertribal wars. In more recent times, especially during the last two centuries, 'the natives have been subjected to frequent raids by the slave traders, which made their existence even more precarious, and if continued much longer would probably have resulted in their complete extermination.

WHEN apparent resistivity data are taken with the symmetrical Wenner 4-electrode spread, a fixed center position is used and readings are taken for values of electrode separation. Basic data consist of apparent resistivity plotted against separation of adjacent electrodes. The interpreter attempts to infer geologic structure, such as the depth to discontinuities and the nature of subsurface earth materials. An earlier paper1 described methods for interpreting resistivity data. All of these involve a severe assumption, namely that the earth in the region of interest consists of horizontal layers, electrically homogeneous and isotropic. The actual earth never satisfies this assumption exactly and may deviate from it so much that none of the above methods can be applied. Attempts in three directions have been made to modify the assumption so that it approaches known geologic complexity more closely.

At Asarco's Mission mill. located near Sahuarita, Ariz., the 20 500-t/d (22,500-stpd) throughput of highly abrasive and corrosive copper ore can play havoc on equipment wear parts. To minimize frequent replacement work and extend life on key components, Asarco engineers have over the past five years utilized liners made of "Towniprene" in the secondary grinding and flotation area of the plant. Results to date have indicated that these liners last between three and five times longer than those made of metal or ordinary rubber.

REACTIONS of oxygen and nitrogen at low pressures with titanium have recently been studied by a number of investigators.1-3 Gulbransen and Andrew' noted that the reaction with nitrogen followed the parabolic rate law whereas the reaction with oxygen deviated slightly from this law in the temperature range 300° to 800°C. In the work reported here, commercial titanium (75 A) was used as the test material. Cylinders 2.5 in. long and 0.25 in. in diameter were machined from heavier bar stock. The test pieces were given a metallographic finish, immersed for 30 min in cold concentrated HC1, washed in water, then acetone, and dried with lint-free cloth. Reaction rates were determined in a modified Sieverts type apparatus by measuring the decrease in gas pressure of the reacting gas contained in a constant volume. The amount of gas added could be measured in a calibrated gas burette to an accuracy of 0.01 mm. During the course of a run the temperature never varied by more than 10°C and then only for brief moments. After placing the specimen in the furnace, the system was first evacuated for 12 hr at room temperature, and then flushed with purified argon five times, adsorbed gases being discharged during this period from the glass system with a high frequency spark coil. The flushing and discharging were repeated at 400°C. This rather involved procedure was found necessary after a number of trial runs indicated extraneous effects traceable to the system. Reaction periods up to 2 hr were used, at initial gas pressures of 0.2 to 0.5 atm. Experimental Results Fig. 1 shows the decrease in oxygen pressure for tests at 0.5 atm at various temperatures as a function of the square root of the time. Deviations from linearity are minor and the parabolic rate law is obeyed. Fig. 2 shows the same plot for the nitrogen reaction. A definite deviation from linearity is noted; however, it is probable that the higher initial rates are caused by the presence of small amounts of oxygen contamination, the initial faster rate changing to the slower rate after about 5 to 10 min. Calculations of the rate constants were made on the basis of the latter portion of the curves. The parabolic rate law constants calculated from these curves are shown for oxygen and nitrogen in Fig. 3. In spite of some scatter the average curves are quite definite. Changes in gas pressure of the order of 20 pct did not result in a measurable change in the rate law constants. The activation energy for the oxygen reaction was calculated to be 47,400 cal per mol (above 700°C), which is not in agreement with the value quoted by Gulbransen and Andrew' for lower temperatures, their value being 26,000 cal below 600°C. STILFONTEIN and surrounding areas gave nega-tive results in all prospecting attempts since about 1904 when Goerz and Co., a forerunner of Union Corporation Ltd., first drilled in the region and on the farm Stilfontein. Subsequent efforts by African and European Investments Co. and Anglo American Corp. from 1934-37 were completely unsuccessful. Holes drilled by these companies on the farms Riet-fontein, Hessie, and Palmietfontein were stopped in the Lower Witwatersrand system without finding payable reefs. The results of gravimeter, ground magnetometer, and aerial magnetometer surveys are presented in the area, in and around the new Stilfontein Gold Mine, in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal in the Union of South Africa. The gravimeter and ground magnetic surveys were completed in 1947—48. The gravity anomalies suggested a block of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites faulted-up between denser rocks of dolomite and Ventersdorp lava. Boreholes S.T. 1, 2, and 3 were drilled in 1948 and, after penetrating the dolomite and Ventersdorp lava, entered Upper Witwatersrand quartzites and intersected the Gold Estates Reef and Vaal Reef. Subsequent drilling delineated the suboutcrop of the Vaal Reef and determined the main structure of this horizon. The gold content of the Vaal Reef was highly payable and shaft sinking is now in progress. The Stilfontein Gold Mining Co. has been formed and, up to date, f5,000,000 capital has been raised for plant, shaft sinking, and development. The payable Vaal Reef horizon extends further south from Stilfontein, the reef occurring at increasing depths. It is possible that at least another mine may be established on these deeper horizons. The farm Stilfontein 39 is situated in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal. This farm and the surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated programs of prospecting dating back to about 1904, when Goerz and Co., the forerunner of Union Corporation, Ltd., first drilled on the farm and in the surrounding areas. From 1934-37, numerous boreholes were drilled on the neighboring farms, Riet-fontein. Hessie. and Palmietfontein, by African and European Investment Co. and Anglo American Corp. All these efforts were completely unsuccessful, and nobody suspected any possible gold-bearing area on Stilfontein until about 1947, when a gravity traverse run by B. D. Maree on the main road, showed a negative gravity anomaly. During 1947-48, the writer's organization completed gravimeter and magnetic surveys on Stilfontein and Rieffontein. An area of negative gravity anomalies was mapped, and it was suggested that this could be caused by blocks of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites, of the average density of 2.65, faulted up between dolomites and Ventersdorp lavas, the density of both of these rocks being 2.8. Fig. 1 shows the geology of the area as mapped by L. T. Nel of the Geological Survey of South Africa. The boreholes on Stilfontein, with the exception of a single hole of Goerz and Co., were drilled after the completion of the geophysical survey. The grouping of the first boreholes S.T. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, clearly shows that these were located in the zone of negative gravity anomalies. Fig. 2 shows the gravity anomaly contours. Fig. 3 shows two sections across the gravity anomaly, together with the corresponding geological sections as obtained from boreholes. The close relation between gravity values and thickness of dolomite plus Ventersdorp lavas is striking. The two latter formations having the same density (2.8), act as one mass as far as gravity effects are concerned. Fig. 4 shows the magnetic anomalies observed on the ground by vertical magnetometers and at 500 ft abbve mean ground level by aerial magnetometer. The latter are anomalies of the total magnetic intensity. The magnetic results show that, on the farm Rietfontein and on the northern half of Stilfontein. Lower Witwatersrand magnetic shales were to be expected at relatively shallow depths. As the strongly

AN EXAMINATION of the Pachuca and El Oro. districts in July, 1920, although cursory and incomplete, disclosed facts of more than passing interest to the student of ore deposits; and inasmuch as the literature on these districts is limited and some of their features are little understood, a brief account may prove valuable as reconnaissance observations to be amplified by more thorough and competent observers in the future. Where no complete monograph of important mining camps has been published a partial presentation of the data is often useful, as it sometimes leads to fuller and more accurate descriptions, by stimulating discussion. The following notes are presented with the consent of Mr. A. F. Main, managing director of the El Oro Mining and Railway Co., whose fund of information and wide acquaintance with both districts alone made it possible to cover so much ground in a short time. I have also to acknowledge gratefully the aid of Messrs. C. A. Lantz and D: S. Calland of the Santa Gertrudis and Real del Monte companies, respectively, in connection with permission to inspect geological features of interest in their mines.

AT some period during the operation of metalliferous and other commercially valuable mineral-deposits in connection with their underground mining, when the developments therein have become so extensive that their description is tedious and confusing, some scheme for naming or numbering the various workings and their parts is necessary for convenience of ; reference.. A simple and symmetrical yet expansive system of classification must be devised, one that is capable of being extended to cover all possible exigencies and conditions of future operations within the property. Such a scheme, properly arranged, greatly simplifies communication between the various departments of the mining business, as, for instance, between the administrative and the operating departments of the concern, and is of the greatest assistance to the officers of the mine in enabling them to locate and describe particular points and parts of workings and specific kinds of work. Again, in the proper segregation and differentiation of mine-accounts, when they are carried out with that detail which will furnish ready information concerning the cost of a particular piece of work, or the various items and totals of expense connected with the, development,, operation and repair of each or all of the mine-workings, some such method of designation becomes a necessity. . Moreover, such a plan is admirably adapted to the needs of the mining engineer, who, in connection with his reports upon mining-properties, is sometimes required, in his descriptions of certain blocks of ore, to locate lists of assays of samples taken from many and various places, and to designate workings and parts of workings that are located in different parts of the mine, sometimes at points wide apart.

Following the declaration of a national emergency by the President on Dec. 16, 1950 the Office of Defense Mobilization was established with Charles Wilson as director. It has been obvious since the entry of Red China into the Korean War that the previous defense setup was not adequate for accelerated mobilization.

C.-Are the results of the experiments in practical operation? WALTER 0. SNELLING.-There have been no large-scale operations up to the present. The necessary conditions of temperature are easily arranged for, but the required condition of pressure, 800 lb., is not so simple a matter. The company has been working on this problem, and at the refinery in Oklahoma work of this kind is now being carried on. The way in which an ordinary still will leak at 50 lb., and more at 100 lb., leaves some doubt in the mind of many as to what can be clone at a continuous working pressure of 800 lb. On the other hand, the fact that they are making ammonia abroad by a method which employs higher pressures and temperatures than anything involved in this method, leads me to believe that the difficulties, which will undoubtedly arise when this is attempted on a commercial scale, can be overcome.
