The coals in northern Wyoming and Montana are free-burning and non-caking and range from lignite to bituminous C in rank. Strip and underground mining are employed to supply railroad, utility, industrial, and domestic fuel. The market area includes Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North and South Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, the Pacific Northwest, and western Canada. THE larger producing coal mines in northern Wyoming are located in the Powder River Basin lying between the Black Hills region of South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and the Big Horn Mountains in north central Wyoming, see Fig. 1. The mines are located particularly in the area along the route of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad from Gillette, Wyo., to a point approximately 15 miles northeast of Sheridan, Wyo. Fig. 2 is a graph of coal production in the state of Wyoming from 1918 to 1951. Across the Big Horn Mountains lies the Big Horn Basin, situated between the Big Horn Mountains and the Rocky Mountains proper. Mining in the Big Horn Basin is almost entirely confined to a small area known as the Gebo Field, near the town of Kirby, which is located on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. This paper will describe present operating areas, making only brief reference to the history of mining and marketing primarily because of the large area to be discussed. The coal beds presently mined in the Powder River Basin are all of Tertiary age and are of Fort Union and Wasatch formations of Paleocene and Eocene ages, see Fig. 3. The Fort Union formation, consisting of 2000 to 3200 ft of alternate sandstone, shale, and coal, is divided from oldest to youngest into the Tullock, Lebo Shale, and Tongue River members. Most of the mineable coal is in the Tongue River member, which is 500 to 800 ft thick. The Carney coal bed, varying from 7 to 20 ft in thickness, is considered the base of the Tongue River member. About 85 ft above the Carney is the Monarch bed, ranging from 18 to 42 ft in thickness. At approximately 210 ft above the Monarch is what is locally known in the Sheridan district as Dietz No. 3 bed, which varies from 12 to 30 ft in thickness. One hundred feet above the Dietz No. 3 is Dietz No. 2 bed, which is 7 to 12 ft thick. At about 100 ft above the Dietz No. 2 is Dietz No. 1 bed, 7 to 15 feet in thickness. Two hundred and fifteen feet above Dietz No. 1 is the Smith bed, approximately 5 ft thick. One hundred twenty-five feet above the Smith is the Roland bed, which is estimated to be approximately 13 ft thick. The Roland bed is considered the base of the Wasatch formation, which in the Powder River Basin is 1000 to 3500 ft thick and is composed largely of shale, sandstone, and coal. The foregoing measures are the only ones above the Tongue River member that have been mined in the Sheridan field. To the east of the Sheridan field, particularly in the area of Gillette, the Roland bed is considerably thicker and is considered the thickest and most extensive coal bed in Wyoming, reaching a maximum thickness of 106 ft. From 125 to 225 ft above the Roland lies the Arvada bed, average thickness 9 ft. Three hundred seventy-five to four hundred feet above the Arvada is the Felix bed, which reaches its maximum thickness of 30 ft near Echeta on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. East of the Powder River the bed averages more than 10 ft in thickness, but it thins in a northwesterly direction. The highest mineable coal in the Powder River field is the Healy bed, about 400 ft above the Felix bed and exposed only in the highest parts of the area where much of it has been burned along the outcrop. Where it has not been burned, the thickness at most of the outcrops is 10 to 15 ft.

A modification, of the Kelvin bridge using an inductor was used to measure the conductivities of molten sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and mixtures thereof. A capillary-type four-lead fused quartz dipping cell was constructed. The effect of a small amount of potassium chloride on the conductivity of the melt was determined. IN the electrowinning of sodium and chlorine from sodium chloride in Downs cells, calcium chloride is added to the sodium chloride in an approximately equimolar amount to permit cell operation at a lower temperature. This lower temperature improves current efficiency and ease of operation, but decreases voltage efficiency by decreasing the electrical conductivity of the melt. A knowledge of the electrical conductivity of the Downs cell melt is necessary to the understanding of Downs cell operation, for the IR voltage drop across the melt is responsible for a significant part of the electrical power consumed by the cell. The work of previous investigators on fused sodium chloride-calcium chloride mixtures was reviewed from the standpoint of consistency with the results of others on the conductivities of the pure constituents. The electrical conductivity of pure fused sodium chloride has been established with accuracy by Van Artsdalen and Yaffe,1 by Edwards, Taylor, Russell, and Maranville,2 and by Lee and Pearson.3 It has also been studied by a number of other investigators.4-13 The best values for calcium chloride are believed to be those of Lee and Pearson,3 since the sodium chloride and potassium chloride conductivity values given by them check the best literature values. A number of other investigators have also reported values for calcium chloride.'-"."' Electrical conductivity data for fused sodium chloride-calcium chloride mixtures have been reported by Sandonnini,12 Vereshchetina and Luz-hnaya,18 Ryschkewitsch,11 Barzakovskii,5 and Alaby-shev and Kulakovskaya.15 Sandonnini reports no data at temperatures lower than 850°C. The conductivity values reported by Vereshchetina and Luz-hnaya, by Ryschkewitsch, and by Barzakovskii for pure sodium chloride and for pure calcium chlor- ide vary somewhat from the literature values believed to be best and the sodium chloride-calcium mixture data of these authors and of Alabyshev and Kulakovskaya (who give no data for the pure compounds) show significant variations. In view of these facts, it seemed that an investigation of the electrical conductivities of fused sodium chloride-calcium mixtures would be worthwhile. Apparatus Bridge System—The bridge used,in this investigation is diagrammed in Fig. 1. In general, the elaborations of this bridge over the simple Wheatstone bridge were for the purposes of a) eliminating lead resistances or making them accurately measurable, and b) eliminating major capacitative and inductive effects or balancing them against each other. Lead resistances in the lower arms of the bridge were kept as low as possible by making the leads short and of low resistance wire. This could not be done in the cell arm of the bridge because of the remoteness of the cell from the other bridge components and because of the high-resistance nickel or chrome1 wires used in the cell. Since maximum sensitivity is attained when the resistances of the four arms of the bridge are equal, 50-O resistors were used in the lower arms of the bridge when fused salt conductivities were being measured, and 1000-O resistors were used when the cell was being calibrated with normal aqueous KCl solution. The cell resistance was of the order of 50 ohms with fused salts and of the order of 1000 ohms with normal aqueous KC1 solution. The resistors used were non-inductive and accurate to 50.05 pct (General Radio Co. Types 500-C and 500-H). The lead resistance between point A in the cell and point E at the measuring resistor was eliminated by using the kelvin bridge principle; that is, the voltape drop across the lead from point A to point E was divided between the cell arm of the bridge and the measuring arm of the bridge in proporation to the resistaxes in the lower arms of the bridge.

Grain boundary dij]usion coefficienls were measured in tungsten between 1400° and 2200° C and can be expressed by the equation sq cm per sec This activation energy confirms some eavlier estimates made .from tungsten sintering experiments. Grain boundary diffusion was found to occur in sub-bozrndavies having -misorientations of less than 10 deg. The actiuation energy for this subboundavy diffusion is equal to that for dijjusion in incoherent grain boundaries with in the limits of error. This is shown to be consistent with the dislocation model of Low-angle boundaries wheve diffusion occlcvs along- the dislocation 'YPipes" comprising -tile boundary. RECENT investigations of the sintering of tungsten powders all report activation energies which are considerably less than the activation energy for tungsten volume diffusion. Kothari' reports a value of 100 * 5 kcal per mole, Hayden and Brophy' obtained 90 kcal per mole, and Vasilos and smith3 found 110.7 kcal per mole from their sintering studies. Since most determinations of the activation energy for volume diffu-sion4-' fall between 120 and 160 kcal per mole (the true value seems most likely to be nearer 150 kcal per mole), the conclusion is drawn that the mass transport leading to densification during sintering is accomplished by grain boundary diffusion. This interpretation is consistent with various diffusion models of the sintering process. 10-12 Vasilos and Smith calculate diffusion coefficients from their data which fit the equation D * 1.36 x 10* exp(-llO,700/HD However, no direct measurements of tungsten grain boundary diffusion have been made. Furthermore, considerable disagreement exists between the directly measured values of tungsten volume diffusion.'-' In order to corroborate the inferred results of the sintering experiments concerning grain boundary diffusion and to provide accurate diffusion data essential to the analysis of the kinetics of creep, oxidation, precipitation, and so forth, the present work was undertaken to measure self-diffusion in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten between 1400" and 2200°C. It is within this temperature range that tungsten sintering is done, the re crystallization of tungsten occurs, and the widest application of tungsten as a high-temperature material will probably be made. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Radioactive WlE5 was produced by irradiating tungstic acid in a neutron flux of 1.2 x 1012 neutrons per sq cm per sec for 36 hr. A 2-week waiting period was allowed for the decay of w"~ also produced by the irradiation. (w"~ has a half-life of 24 hr.) The half-life of the remaining isotope was determined to be 75 days confirming the presence of w lE5 and the absence of any undesired radionuclide. Specimens 4 in. in diam and $ in. thick were cut from polycrystalline swaged tungsten rods (recrystal-lized) and from Linde single-crystal rods. Chemical analyses of these materials appear in Table I. Actually upon closer examination, the single-crystal specimens were found to consist of several subgrains separated primarily by tilt boundaries in which the misor-ientation ranged from 3 to 10 deg. Thus, it was possible to measure boundary diffusion coefficients in these low-angle subboundaries as well as in the incoherent boundaries of the polycrystalline specimens. The two faces of each specimen were ground flat and parallel within 0.0001 in. The radioactive tungstic acid was dissolved in concentrated ammonium hydroxide, placed on the ground flat of the specimen, and evaporated to dryness. The oxide was then reduced in hydrogen at 1000°C resulting in a layer of wlE5 approximately 1 p thick. The diffusion anneals were performed in vacuum in a tantalum resistance furnace. Time at temperature ranged from 10 hr at 1400°C to 2 hr at 2200°C. The penetration profile was determined by measuring the residual activity after successive removal of surface layers by grinding on metallographic polishing paper. Extreme care was exercised to insure that sections were always taken normal to the diffusion direction; this was verified repeatedly by checking that front and back surfaces of the specimen remained parallel. The activity was measured with an end-window Geiger-Mueller counter. The sides and edges of the specimen were well-shielded to eliminate possible effects due to surface diffusion. The weight of the

STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence caused by mining necessarily chiefly deal with causes and effects of making extensive excavations underground with spans beyond the strength of the un- supported or temporarily timbered roof or hanging wall. Perhaps no other phase of engineering is so de- pendent for results upon the assemblage of what may be called "experience data." That this is the case is cot surprising when one considers the number of variables involved in any at- tempted mathematical formula to determine the angle of draw or the angle of permanent slope of the rocks in any particular case. It is not like dealing with construction materials in which, through testing of. small specimens, in conjunction with the tests of large built- up specimens, relative stresses and strains may be deter- mined and formulas closely approximated for still larger constructions.

Commercially hot-rolled low-carbon steel strip may have one of two basic types of orientation texture, depending upon the amount of a iron which was present during the finishing passes. The changes in these textures with varying amounts of cold reduction up to 95 pct have been determined for the sheet surface plane and for parallel planes down to the mid-plane. The development of cold reduction textures has been reassessed on the basis of (200), (222). and (110) stereographic pole figures and pole density or inverse pole figure values. In agreement with the literature, it is shown that the textures can be described in terms of partial fiber textures but alternative descriptions are given for one of the fiber textures, in order to more closely correlate with experimental data. One partial fiber texture consists of orientations of the type (hkk)[011] extending from (100)[011] to {322}(011) in agreement with the literature. At moderate amounts of cold reduction, a second partial fiber texture forms with a <331> fiber axis inclined 20 deg to the sheet normal and a range of orientations centered on one close to (1 11)[112] and reaching to (232)[101] or (322)[011]. An alternative description involves a (111) fiber axis parallel to the sheet normal but capable of rotation about the rolling direction with rotation about the fiber axis. ORIENTATIONS developed in low-carbon steel strip after cold reduction are of commercial importance because they control, in part, the final preferred orientations after subsequent annealing. The method of control however is not understood completely. Some preliminary work indicated that the cold-reduced orientations and the subsequent annealing textures of commercial low-carbon steel were dependent on the orientations present in the material before cold reduction, that is, those present in the hot-rolled strip but, to date, the effects of initial orientations have not been extensively investigated. For this reason, much of the information given in the literature on development of preferred orientation is difficult to assess as details of initial texture and processing conditions are often inadequate or are altered by a subsequent heat treatment such as normalizing.&apos; It is known2 that anomalous results for near surface orientations may be obtained if lubrication during cold rolling is not adequate but whether lubricant was used during the experiments has not always been given, nor has the exact depth below the surface at which determinations have been made. A comprehensive review of cold rolling textures has been made recently by Dillamore and Roberts&apos; and more restricted recent reviews are due to stickels4 and Abe.5 Based largely on the experimental work of Bennewitz,1 reviewers have accepted that the preferred orientations produced on cold reducing low-carbon steel can be described in terms of two partial fiber textures as follows: Partial Fiber Texture A which has a (011) direction in the rolling direction and includes orientations within the spread from (211)[011] through (100)[Oll] to (211)[011.]; there is some controversy as to whether it extends as far as the orientation (111)[011]. As Dillamore6 has observed, the extent of this partial fiber texture depends on the intensity levels selected. Partial Fiber -texture B which has a (011) direction located 60 den from the rolling direction in the plane containing the rolling direction and the sheet normal. There are two directions which satisfy these conditions and orientations in this partial fiber texture extend from (21l)[0ll] through (554)[225] to (121)[101]. The orientations {211}(011) are members of both partial fiber textures A and B and it can be noted that a variant of {554)<225> is within 6 deg of a variant of {111}(112). Barrett7 had postulated earlier that, in addition to orientations which would fall into partial fiber texture A, a true fiber texture with a (111) direction in the sheet normal was present after heavy cold reduction. This fiber texture would include orientations such as {111}(011) and {111}(112). Later investigators, notably Bennewitz,&apos; have discounted this, mostly on the ground that the partial fiber textures A and B, as described above, contain all the strong orientations that have been observed. However in other work it has been reported2 that (222) pole density or inverse pole figure values show a continuing increase with increasing reduction by cold rolling and give values considerably greater than for any other low indices plane. Thus it could be inferred that a (111) fiber texture as described by Barrett would be one which becomes more dominant with increasing cold reduction, whereas Bennewitz&apos; concluded that components such as {554)(225) in partial fiber texture B began to decrease in intensity at high reductions. Following Bennewitz, one would expect a decreasing (222) pole density value (parallel to the sheet normal) with increasing cold reduction. Because fiber textures consist of grains with a range of orientations that have one axis in common, it has been inferred that during deformation the crystal orientations rotate about the fiber axis&apos;74 and that the orientations of crystals that at one stage belong to one fiber texture can rotate on further cold reduction into the other fiber texture through an orientation in which the two fiber textures intersect.&apos; For example,

To establish the minimum or break-even efficiency of a preparation plant it is necessary to determine the ratio of production costs per ton of run-of-mine coal to sale price per ton of clean coal. This ratio is then divided by the percentage of plant recovery. Assume, for example, that washability data indicate that 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal may be recovered as clean coal selling for $5.50 per ton. If the same plant incurs $4.00 per ton mining costs and $0.25 per ton preparation costs, the cost to sale price ratio would be 4.25/5.50, or 77.3 pct. Since the plant is capable of recovering 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal the minimum plant efficiency would be 77.3/80, or 96.6 pct. If the plant efficiency were increased to 100 pct the limit on preparation costs would be increased to $0.40. Therefore, the washing operation must be accomplished at a cost of $0.25 to $0.40 per ton and the efficiency must be 96.6 pct or higher. By plotting a curve of efficiency vs preparation costs and taking into consideration the plant cost, feed rate, operating costs, and yields of the various flowsheets it is possible to select a financially sound process. Table I classifies preparation processes according to their nature of separation. It must be remembered that what is thought to be ideal does not always prove practical under actual operation. An outstanding example is the work done on the plunger-type jig. It was determined by the law of equivalence that this unit could treat satisfactorily only sizes differing by no more than a ratio of 2. Yet these same plunger-type jigs are successfully treating sizes considerably greater than this ratio.

AN early appreciation by the management that Climax ore presented a challenging problem of economic concentration was responsible for the establishment, in June 1926, of an ore-testing department at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines at Golden, some ninety miles from Climax. An engineering office was later organized in the same community for the design of all ore-treatment units erected at Climax during the period of rapid growth. Work of the ore-testing and design staffs was effectively co-ordinated under a common head. The primary reason for having the ore-testing and plant design departments in Golden, was to place these activities under the able supervision of A. J. Weinig, consultant for the Climax Molybdenum Co., and director of the experimental plant. A secondary consideration was the availability of excellent facilities for research in ore dressing in a highly favorable environment. Concentration of molybdenite by flotation from an ore of simple mineral composition does not appear, superficially, to present a serious problem in ore dressing but experience belies this apparent simplicity. THE diffusion and precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in a iron have previously been investigated using the internal friction as a measuring tool.&apos; Most of this work has been done on rather pure iron; no effect was observed which would indicate that either of these phenomena is affected by the rather small amounts of impurity found in these samples of iron. Fastz observed, however, that both the diffusion rate and the aging properties of nitrogen in iron were sensibly changed by the addition of Vz pet Mn. The diffusion rate at a given temperature is reduced and the nucleation of nitrides is apparently changed somewhat. He observed no such changes for carbon in this alloy. Later Dijkstra and Sladek" extended these observations on nitrogen to other alloys of iron. They found that metals other than manganese also influence the behavior of nitrogen in iron; chromium, molybdenum and especially vanadium affect the diffusion and precipitation of nitrogen even more than manganese does. Their results have been verified in all essential details by this author, who finds in addition that small additions of nickel have about the same effect on the diffusion of nitrogen as the same amount of manganese. The present work was undertaken to study the effect on carbon in iron of these alloying elements. The alloys used had two sources. The material used as a "standard" (designated Fe in this paper) in the measurements was some iron supplied by J. K. Stanley, of Westinghouse Electric Corp., who reported 0.01 pct 0, as the only major impurity. He also made up an alloy of 0.26 pct Ni and one of 0.9 pct Mo using this same iron as a base. They were supplied by him in 2 lb billets, which were sawed into rods and cold formed into 0.030 in. wires for measurement. The alloys of chromium, manganese, and vanadium were prepared by the metallurgy section of the Institute for the Study of Metals, University of Chicago, by adding these metals in turn to vacuum melts of National Research Corp. iron. The small castings prepared in this way were also cold formed into 0.030 in. wires. After these wires had been prepared they were decarburized for 30 min at 730°C in wet Hz. After this treatment, no trace of carbon (as measured by internal friction) could be found. All specimens were then carburized for about 15 min at 710°C and water quenched. By this treatment the internal friction at 40°C was raised to a Q-&apos; ~ 0.015. The diffusion of carbon in these alloys was studied by observing the shape and position of the internal friction peak at 0.9 cycles per sec. These measurements were made using a torsional pendulum in a manner described earlier.&apos; The data are plotted in Fig. 1. It is seen that there is no apparent difference in internal friction between the various alloys. This is in marked distinction to the broadening and shift-

Tlze green electroluminescence occurring at liquid-nitvogen temperature in epitaxial gallium phosphide diodes is exarnined using the donor dopants silicon and sulfur. Zinc is used as the p-type diffusant. Two tt~ain peaks are found, namely til 0.56 and 0.535 p. The intensity of the gYeen peak occurring at 0.56 is found to oary as -4"&apos; wlzere Jf is the forward current density and to first order appears to be dependent on the concet~tvation of ionized donovs. Tile vadintive lifetinze fov this process is -10-&apos;sec. The intensity of the 0.56-p lu~ninescence is nt least several ovdevs of magnitude greate,, at liquid-nitvogen temperature than that noted jor the 0.538 radiation for current densities up to about 35 amp per sq cm. The variation oj- the intensity of. the 0.538-p peak with current density caries according to the donor dopant. With sulfur as the donor one has a J12 dependence, whereas when silicon is the donov a J1.5 dependence is noted. Tl~e above can be fitted to a In molecular process (in first order) such as a band to band recombination. ThE development of high-purity, large single crystals of epitaxially grown gallium phosphide is the ultimate aim of the studies to be reported. While a number of papers and reviews&apos; have been presented on properties of gallium phosphide grown from gallium solution and from the melt, less attention has been paid to the properties of epitaxial gallium phosphide grown from the vapor. In the studies to be reported we have examined the effects of shallow donor impurities, primarily silicon and sulfur, at liquid-nitrogen temperature, on both the electrical and green electroluminescent properties of carefully characterized single-crystal epitaxial Gap. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Preparation and Properties. The samules used in this investigation were single-crystal n-type epitaxial gallium phosphide. he single crystals were synthesized from the elements by vapor transport and epitaxial deposition on single-crystal gallium arsenide substrates. Typical transport agents used were chlorides. The growth procedures are described in more detail in Ref. 2. The samples were grown in the (111) orientation and had thicknesses up to 480 . Following the growth, the GaAs substrate was removed from the epitaxial Gap by etching in nitric acid. The Hall effect and resistivity of these n-type samples were measured as a function of temperature and analyzed for impurity content and compared with spectroscopic emission analysis. The results are given in greater detail in Ref. 3 but a summary is noted in Table I. In Table I, AED denotes the donor ionization energy, Nd is the donor impurity concentration, lvA is the acceptor impurity concentration, NI is the total impurity concentration, Rip vs temperature is the measured Hall mobility-temperature relationship from liquid nitrogen to about 400"K, n(77"K) is the measured carrier concentration at liquid nitrogen, and R/p(77&apos;~) is the measured Hall mobility at liquid nitrogen. Good agreement is noted between electrical and emission analysis for the major donor impurity, silicon, in the two materials where it is a major constituent. In the case of the two samples SC90-6 and AP138-3(111) B which were sulfur-doped the ionization energy found from the electrical data is in good agreement with that reported for sulfur.4 The acceptor impurities are not known, although from the presence of magnesium in the samples as indicated by emission analysis and its known role as an acceptor in GaP,4 magnesium could be present as an acceptor. Similarly, since silicon is known to be an amphoteric impurity4 it may also be present as an acceptor in the Gap.* The *A small band has been noted at 0.625 11 in samples SC90-6, SC76-4, and SC77-4, suggesting according to Ref. 5 that sillcon could be present as an acceptor In these samples since these authors have found this peak to represent a donor-silicon emission. presence of calcium deduced from emission analysis is not correlatable with the electrical analysis and its presence as an electrically active impurity should be questioned. B) Sample Preparation and Diode Fabrication. The original slices were of the order of 2 sq cm in area witi the (111)B face up. The material was cleaved and sectioned and the best pieces selected (i.e., those which visually appeared to have the least strain and defects). The samples were polished, lightly etched, and cleaned in trichloroethylene. Zinc was diffused in a closed tube at 800°C to form a p-n junction. Diodes were made from these samples. The depth of junction varied, but did not exceed 10 p depth. The diameters of sessile drops have been found to increase linearly with time in five reacting binary metal systems. The spreading rates of the drops are markedly dependent on temperature and on prior alloying of the solid with the lower melting point metal, hut are independent of the drop volume, wetting atruosphere , solid-surface roughness, and prior alloying of the drop with the substrate metal. A mechanism has been suggested that relates the linear-spreading rate to lateral diffusion of the liquid-metal atoms into the solid at the drop edge. An Arrhenius- type equation has been derived that describes the temperature dependence 0) the spreading rate, and although the agreement between the actual and the predicted pre-exponen-tial terms is poor that between the activation energies is excellent and the variation in the spreading rate of copper on Ni-Cu alloys produced by different extents of alloying can be predicted with considerable accuracy. CHEMICAL interactions frequently change the wetting behavior of solid-liquid systems causing, for example, "secondary spreading1 of sessile drops beyond the size defined by the surface and interfacial tensions of the unreacted components. The kinetics of the contact-angle decreases associated with this spreading are similar for many systems, but few studies have been made with the objective of determining whether the similarities are a reflection of a common mechanism. Some workers2,3 have assumed the secondary spreading is controlled by changes in the liquid surface and liquid-solid interfacial tensions and hence by the composition of the liquid, and contact-angle changes measured by the vertical-plate technique have been used to follow the course of liquid-solid chemical reactions.4 Other processes that have been invoked to explain these time-dependent changes in specific systems include the removal of adsorbed gas from the liquid-solid interface.5 penetration of containment layers on the solid Surface,6 interdiffusion,1,7 reori-entation of the solid surface into a wettable configuration: vapor-phase transport of the liquid onto the solid in advance of the drop,9 and, from vertical-plate studies. capillary flow between oxide layers and the solid surface.10 One of the reasons for the profuseness of these suggestions may be the complexity of the contact-angle change kinetics. However, in an analysis of secondary spreading gold and copper on UC,11 it was found that the diameter of the contact area between the sessile drop and the solid surface showed a simple linear increase with time although contact-angle changes were more complex. To check whether the linearity was merely fortuitous! additional exploratory work was conducted with four reacting metal-metal systems: Au on Ni. Cu on Ni, Cu on Fe, and Ag on Au. Linear spreading was observed in every case even though the kinetics of the contact-angle changes were complex. A further detailed study of the kinetics of linear spreading of five reacting metal-metal systems has been made with the object of determining the mechanism involved. The influence of variables such as temperature, drop volume. and the initial composition of the drop on the linear-spreading rate has been measured and compared with those predicted by a number of possible mechanisms. The systems employed in this study (Cu and Au on Ni and Pt, and Ag on Au) were selected because of the availability of potentially relevant chemical and physical property data. the simplicity of their phase diagrams at the wetting temperatures, and the ease of experimentation. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The purities of the metals used in the study were: copper, 99.9 pct; gold. 99.96 pct; nickel, 99.2 pct; platinum 99.99 pct; and silver, 99.999 pct. The wetting tests were performed in a split tantalum tube vacuum resistance furnace of a conventional design. The furnace element was held vertically and was 1 $ in. in diam and 6 in, long. Viewing ports were provided in the water-cooled chamber to enable the specimens to be observed in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The temperature in the hot zone of the furnace could be held at 1500" i 5°C for an indefinite time. The surfaces of the solid-plaque metals were ground flat on Microcut paper and both the sessile drop and substrate metals were ultrasonically cleaned in methyl alcohol prior to their insertion in the furnace. After loading, the furnace was pumped down to a pressure of 2 x 10-5 mm of mercury and degassed for 30 min at 900° to 950°C. The temperature was then increased at more than 100°C per min to that used in the wetting test. The vacuum at the wetting temperature was better than 5 x 10-5 mm of mercury. Dewetting and retraction of the drop on cooling did not occur and the contact-area diameters, therefore, were measured after solidification with a vernier traveling microscope. The diameters quoted later are arithmetic means of ten measurements. The standard error of the mean never exceeded 3 pct and was often less than 1 pct.

THE first discovery of zinc 011 the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Rapper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded 011 the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. The permeability of an oil or gas sand is its capacity for transmitting fluids, either liquids or gases, under pressure. The permeability of a sand depends upon the size and shape of the openings in it and the extent to which these communicate with one another, as well as upon the ratio of their volume to the total volume of the sand. The apparatus employed and the method of procedure used by the authors in conducting the permeability tests have been described in a previous pub1ication.l For the tests described here 1/2-in. cubes were used. They were set in the lower end of a 1-in. union, inserted in a square hole cut in a hard rubber stopper which fitted into the lower end of the union. In the tests with air, volumes were measured with a wet American gas meter of 100 cu. ft. capacity. In those with water, distilled water at room temperature was employed, unless otherwise noted. DescRiption of Sands Tested The tests described in this paper were performed upon 18 samples representing typical oil and gas sands from 7 localities in northwestern Pennsylvania. For purposes of identification, the cores from which the samples came have been designated by capital letters, the sequence of the samples in the cores by numerals, and the individual cubes by small letters. All cubes from the same samples came from adjacent portions parallel to the bedding. Core A of the Bradford sand came from the north central part of the Bradford field, from an area where water-flooding operations have proved highly successful. Core B of the same sand was obtained from the southern part of the field. This core contained a so-called "loose streak," 7.5 ft. thick, in the middle portion of which B2 is a representative sample. The "loose streak" has given trouble in water-flooding but responded favorably to an air-drive, using a pressure of 300 lb. THE creep and stress rupture properties of three grades of aluminum have been reported in a previous paper.&apos; It was found that the stress coefficient of the creep rate and of the rupture time changes at the transition from low temperature-type to high temperature-type deformation. The transition corresponds to the equicohesion for grains and grain boundaries. In order to support the conclusions obtained from the examination of creep and stress rupture data, the deformed specimens were observed metallographically and a few special tests were conducted. The results of these qualitative observations are given in the present paper. Experimental Procedure and Results Table I gives the types of aluminum specimens.&apos; The creep and stress rupture tests were conducted in simple tension at constant stress. Further details on the experimental techniques have been given.&apos; The test bars were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic mixture before testing and were observed after testing without any further preparation unless otherwise specified. Observations of specimen cross-sections were made after electrolytic polishing and etching. The samples were extended along a direction parallel to the longer side of the micrographs of Figs. 12 through 27. The log-log plots of stress vs. minimum creep rate for the three grades of aluminum appear in Figs. 1 and 2. The reference numbers on each curve help relate the photographs to the conditions of testing, indicating where high temperature-type deformation and failure prevailed and where low temperature behavior prevailed. Deformation of Single Crystals at Very High Temperature: An annealed, high purity aluminum specimen was slightly strained at one end and re-annealed. A large single crystal was formed at the strained end of the specimen during re-annealing; the other end remained polycrystalline (see Fig. 3). A stress of 50 psi was applied to the cold specimen to avoid loading at 1100°F. The temperature was then raised to 1100°F, kept at 1100°F for 3 hr, and lowered again to room temperature. Fig. 4 shows the appearance of the specimen after testing. The single crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the polycrystalline part deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. Some grain growth occurred in the polycrystalline part. Another high purity specimen, which had two large single crystals at the two ends and a polycrystalline zone in the middle portion, was tested at 1000 °F under a stress of 100 psi. The appearance of the sample after test is shown in Fig. 5. Even though considerable slip occurred in the single crystals, the fracture occurred in the weaker polycrystalline portion. Evidence of Grain Boundary Migration during Creep Testing: A high purity, coarse grained specimen, which had a large crystal in the middle portion (see Fig. 6) was tested at 700°F under a constant stress of 175 psi for 30 hr. The appearance of the specimen after testing (Fig. 7) indicates that the large crystal deformed by gliding along parallel planes, while the rest of the specimen deformed mainly by grain boundary flow. IN PAST YEARS, engineering educators and others have been able to study the problems relating to en-gineering education in the United States with only inadequate and, frequently, inaccurate data at their command. For the first time there is now available fairly full and accurate information on this subject, gathered and compiled by the Board of Investigation and Coordination of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. This board, of which W. E. Wickenden is the director, has for the past four years been carrying out fact-finding investigations into "the objects of engineering education and the fitness of the present day curriculum," under a grant of funds from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Twelve bulle-tins have already been published by the board and others are in the process of preparation. The studies made, thus far, have been of the various phases of engineering education in general as well as of the major branches of engineering. Within the past year. the board has completed a study of mining engi-neering education by means of a questionnaire sent to members of the Institute. A special committee, con-sisting of Charles E. Locke, Allen H. Rogers and the writer, cooperated with the board in drafting certain parts of the questionnaire and in selecting the mailing list. Similar studies have been made through the mem-bers of the four other national societies. The results of these studies have been published only in mimeo-graphed form, therefore, in order to place the data before the members of the Institute an incomplete sum-mary of the replies to the A. I. M. E. questionnaire is here given. The full report will be available for distri-bution at the annual meeting in February. The questionnaire was sent to 306 members of the Institute, a proportion about equal to the proportion of the membership of the other national societies can-vassed; 152 members replied to the questionnaire, 55 per cent of whom had received college degrees in some branch of engineering connected with the mineral in-dustry. Forty-seven educational institutions were rep-resented in the replies. Seventeen different positions were held by the members who replied, with 24 con-sulting engineers at the head of the list, 20 managers, 16 superintendents, 11 presidents, 10 professors, 6 deans, and others.

HORNBOGEN1 has recently shown that it is possible to measure the degree of segregation accompanying cellular precipitation in ferritic Fe-Zn alloys by measuring the lattice parameter of the ferrite phase within the cell. In extending this work to study a wider range of composition and to evaluate the free-energy change accompanying the growth of the cells, the lattice parameter and the boundary of the a! phase in Fe-Zn alloys were redetermined to check the earlier work of Schramm.2 This appeared to be necessary since the Fe-Zn diagram has been drastically revised since the work of Schramm. Stadelmaier and Bridgers3 have recently shown that, contrary to prior belief: the y iron field is closed and the a phase boundary extends to an a + T + L peritectic at 782°C where peritectic a contains 42 at, pet Zn. The phase T in equilibrium with the a solid solution has a composition near Fe3Zn10 and a cubic 081 type structure.&apos; The alloys were prepared by two different methods. In the first method carbonyl iron powder (400 mesh, 99.8 pet pure) and high-purity zinc powder (200 mesh, 99.99 pet pure) were mixed in a ball mill and then pressed in a die at 40,000 psi pressure to make compacts with a diameter of 5/8 in. and a thickness of l/4 in. These were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules, gradually heated to 1100°C over a period of 1 week (3 days at 600°C) 3 days at 800°C, 1 day at (1100°C), and then quenched in iced brine. For the alloys containing 23.4 and 30.1 at. pet Zn, the final homogenization anneals were performed at 1000" and 850°C) respectively, to prevent melting. In the second method, alloys were prepared by saturating high-purity iron millings (0.001 in. thick, 99.9 pet pure) in zinc vapor. For each alloy the impregnation was conducted at a fixed vapor pressure of zinc and a fixed temperature between 750&apos; and 800°C. When saturated, the millings were quenched in water. The compositions of the alloys prepared by both methods are shown in Table I. The lattice parameters of the ferritic solid solutions were determined by comparing the 26 values of their 310, peaks (using Co Ka) or of their 211 , peaks (using Cr Ka) with those of corresponding peaks for high-purity a iron. The 20 values were measured at room temperature with an X-ray dif-fractometer (G.E.-XRD5). Recent studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deformation may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as determined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapselll said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was determined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instruments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschewsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc. AppaRatus The creep-testing apparatus developed for this work is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The extensometer A is sensitive enough to detect changes in length of 3.3 X 10~6 in. per in., and yet can be used into the plastic range without injury to the apparatus. The specimen,

The deposits described occur in a belt starting 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and extending 6 miles in a southeasterly direction. They are of the contact metamorphic type, being associated with a limestone and calcareous tuff that is interbedded with andesite tuffs and andesites which have been invaded by a quartz diorite intrusion. Of the fire occurrences examined, the largest can be traced for a horizontal distance of 2000 ft. No mining has, been done, but some of the outcrops lead to the belief that deposits of commercial size are present. IN CONNECTION with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,1 a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast.
