During 1966, crushed stone production in the United States totaled just over 811 million tons valued at almost $1.2 billion. This represented in- creases of 4 % in tonnage and 5 % in value over that for 1965. Excluding the crushed stone used for agricultural and certain industrial purposes (cement, lime and flux), crushed stone mineral aggregate production totaled 616.3 million tons valued at almost $910 million, also up roughly 4% in tonnage and 5% in value over the 1965 figures. Limestone was by far the most widely used rock variety, followed by basalt, granite and sandstone in that order. Concrete aggregate and roadstone continued as the main uses for stone, accounting for 63% of all tonnage produced in 1966 and 60% of total stone value. Sand and gravel production in 1966 increased 3% over that for 1965. Total 1966 output was just in excess of 934 million tons valued at almost $985 million as compared with 908 million tons at $957 million for the previous year. Excluding the higher valued industrial sands, 903.2 million tons of sand and gravel valued at $891.6 million were used directly as mineral aggregates, representing a 2.9% increase in tonnage and a 2.4% increase in value over 1965.

HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru, for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to. appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

Extensive sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 yegrs by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The $fur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jackson County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out.. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent. sulfur. The coal mined in the district is No. 6 or Herrin coal, commonly known as the Carterville or Franklin County coal. The bed has a thickness varying from about 8 ft. (2.4 m.) on the border of the low-sulfur area up to more than 10 ft. (3 m.) in the central portion, locally having a thick-

In all types of subsurface pressure gauges the extension which occurs in the pressure-sensitive element is a function of the difference between the external (well or calibration) pressure and the internal pressure within the gauge, rather than a function of the external pressure only. The internal pressure is near atmospheric and depends upon (a) the quantity of air sealed within the gauge at the time of calibration or measurement, (b) the quantity of moisture (liquid water), if any, sealed within the gauge, and (c) the temperature at which the calibration or well measurement is made. Part of this correction for the change of internal pressure with temperature is taken care of by the customary temperature coefficient of the gauge. However, part of it is not, and while this portion may be only a few psi, it is nevertheless predictable or preventable, and should be considered in precision measurements. ERROR NO. 1 If air is sealed in the gauge at the same temperature and pressure for both the calibration and the well measurements, the usual temperature correction will take care of any difference between calibration and well measurement temperatures. However, if air is sealed within the gauge at temperature T1 and pressure P1 at calibration but at temperature T2 and pressure P2 for a well measurement, because different amounts of air are sealed within the gauge in each case, the internal pressure at. or corrected to, calibration temperature Tr will he different by where all temperatures and pressures are absolute. The calibration temperature is used, and not the well measurement temperature, because the usual temperature correction reduces the well measurements to calibration temperature. The correction term as calculated by the above equation is separate from. and in addition to, the usual temperature correction. Example: T, = 540°R, sealing temperature at calibration P, = 14.7 psia, sealing pressure at calibration T2 = 460°R, sealing temperature at well P2 = 14.7 psia, sealing pressure at well Tr = 660°R, calibration temperature AP = 660 [14.7/460 — 14.7/540] = 3.1 psi While this error is small even under these somewhat maximal conditions, it nevertheless represents a practical situation which did occur, and which as a matter of fact gave rise to this note. Where AP is positive, as above, the correction is added to the measured pressure; where negative, subtracted from the measured pressure. This correction should also be considered in successive calibration runs where the gauge, for example, may be warm from a previous calibration at an elevated temperature. ERROR NO. 2 Where a small quantity of moisture (liquid water) is sealed within the gauge at atmospheric conditions, the increased vapor pressure of the water at higher well or calibration temperatures will cause an increase in internal pressure. This moisture will come presumably from condensation within the gauge following temperature changes, from moisture on the operator's hands, and from atmospheric moisture (rain, mist, fog, etc.). Calculation shows that approximately 0.2 cc of water (three to four drops) is sufficient to saturate the air within an Amerada RPG-3 Gauge at 160°F, at which temperature the vapor pressure of water is about 5 psia. As the vaporization occurs in a sealed volume, the increase in internal pressure will be in excess of this 5 psi. At higher temperatures the pressures will be higher; however more water will be required to saturate the air within the gauge. Some experimental work was carried out with an Amerada RPG-3 Gauge at 200°F fitted with a 1,000 psi element, both with a dry recording chamber and with a small amount of water added. The results directly proved the existence of the error due to the presence of moisture, and, it is felt, indirectly, due to the differences in sealing temperatures and pressures, as both effects may be ascribed simply to an increase in the moles of gas within the recording chamber. SUMMARY In precision measurements the error introduced by sealing the gauge during a well test at a different temperature and pressure from that of calibration may be corrected for by using the equation presented, or it may be prevented by taking care always to seal the gauge at near calibration conditions. The error introduced by sealing moisture in the gauge may be prevented by taking care to keep moisture out of the gauge, or by removing the moisture by either warming or evacuating the gauge. Both of these errors are independent of the range of pressure measurement and the type of gauge, and are in addition to the usual temperature correction. Molybdenite mineralization occurs in the hood zone of the Questa mine aplite-porphyry intrusive, one of the three sil ica-rich intrusive5 occurring along the east-west trending Red River Trench that crosses the northerly trending Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico. The Trench is located immediately north of the circular Gold Hill positive block between the Red River and Cabresto Creek drainages. The aplite-porphyry bodies intruded a mid-Tertiary volcanic section consisting of lower andesites, overlain by latites and rhyolites. They occur largely in the andesites and were emplaced mainly by metasomatism rather than by sloping. Hydrothermal alteration occurs both as blanket propylitization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the porphyries and as halo-type alteration outward from veins and shear zones resulting in strong biotization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the aplitic rocks. Mineralization consists of: ( 1) molybdenite- quartz veinlets; (2) banded molybdenite, quartz veins frequently with biotite and potash feldspar along the walls and occasionally with minor lead, zinc, and copper sulfides and with fluorite and carbonates when again reopened; ( 3) high grade molybdenite locally along shear zones; and ( 4) molybdenite paint along joint and fracture surfaces. The mineralization was associated with faulting that resulted from numerous periods of gravity adjustment along the Trench and was controlled by the major shear systems that trend northeast, east-west and north-south to northwest. Molybdenite has been well oxidized in nearsurface exposures to ferrimolybdite and the molybdenum-bearing ferric hydroxide, akaganeite. The oxidation of the abundant pyrite within the veins and shear zones and of the alteration pyrite in the volcanics resulted in a low pH environment under which the acid molybdate ion released by oxidation was fixed either in the ferrimolybdite or the akaganeite molecule in the veins and shear zones or in the soils. It is often desirable to work an old mine that has not been in operation for some time arid that is filled with water. This is especially true in Nova Scotia, where no great depth has yet been reached in any of the mines. The following is a description of a self-dumping water-tank which was used by me at Tangier, for draining a mine, and which did the work of a large pump, while the original cost is merely nominal, in comparison with the price of a pump. The tank, A, Pig. 1, is 1 1/3 by 3 feet and 4 feet high, inside measurement, made of 2-inch stuff and securely bound with iron. There are two clacks in the bottom which open as the tank is lowered into the water, and which close and hold the water as the tank is raised. B is an iron rod running through the tank, below and back of the center, and projecting beyond the sides of the tank. C is one of two guides, and D, a movable iron rod in each guide. The variation in hydrogen content of basic open-hearth steels during refining and the effect of changing from steam to air atomization were studied. The water content of the furnace atmosphere, the slag basicity, and the degree of oxidation of the slag-metal system largely control the hydrogen in the steel. SMALL amounts of hydrogen have an adverse effect on the ductility of steel and a wide range of hydrogen contents has an adverse effect on the internal soundness of both ferrous and nonferrous castings. This has been of major concern to the metal industry, both manufacturers and fabricators, for many years. As one of the results of continuing investigations of the hydrogen problem, much has been learned about methods of reducing the hydrogen content of liquid metals below the relatively high levels that are normally associated with such phenomena as rising ingots and excessive porosity in sand casting. However, it was not until a reliable and simple method for sampling and analyzing liquid metal was developed that much progress was possible in quantitatively evaluating the effect of steelmaking practice on hydrogen contents at levels below 6 to 8 ppm. Throughout all the work described in the following presentation the Geffner pintube technique was used to obtain samples of liquid metal1 * and the tin-fusion method, developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,2 was used to analyze the samples. Before attempting a systematic experimental program for minimizing the hydrogen content of open-hearth steels, it was necessary to determine the variation in hydrogen in the open-hearth bath during the normal processing of a heat. The logs of ten heats are illustrated in Figs. 1 through 7. The number at each point on the graphs refers to the number of pintube samples analyzed for hydrogen. An increase in the hydrogen content of the liquid metal during the early period of refining is apparent in all heats. There is evidence of a decrease in hydrogen later in the refining period, see Fig. 2, for example. Therefore, the existence of a maximum hydrogen content at some intermediate time during the refining period is anticipated. To test for the existence of a maximum, the data illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 were grouped together so that they could be examined on a collectively comparable basis. The grouping was effected, as illustrated in Fig. 8, by superimposing Figs. 1 to 5 so that the apparent hydrogen maxima coincided at a fixed position, indicated by the zero on the time axis. Also, by vertical adjustment until the graphs appeared to the eye to be superimposed, the hydrogen scale was made to show the change in hydrogen content. That is, a standard amount was subtracted from the hydrogen values for each heat. Therefore, Fig. 8 represents a generalized presentation of the data and, for this reason, cannot be used to predict the actual hydrogen content of the bath during refining, but rather to show the probable rate of change in hydrogen during refining. Statistical examination of the grouped data in Fi.g. 8 shows that the apparent. increase and suhsequent decrease in hydrogen are real and confirms the existence of a maximum in general. The resistivity of single crystal and of polycrystalline metal has been determined between 77° and 1500°K. At comparable purity, the resistivity of the poly crystalline metal differs from that calculated from the axial resistivity values. The observed anisotropy is briefly discussed. A zone refined titanium rod was obtained from F. J. Darnell.1 The hardness of this material varied between 52 and 64 Bhn, indicative of its high purity. Single-crystal specimens were cut out from a few large grains, elongated predominantly along <1120>. Resistance measurements were taken with specimens immersed in liquid nitrogen, solid CO,, and acetone, and at ice point, and then recorded continuously between room temperature and 1200" to 1250°C, throughout at least one full heating and cooling cycle at a rate of l° to 3°C per min. Four probe measurements were taken using spot-welded Pt wire 0.003 in. in diam as potential terminals, and the electromotive force drop was determined poten-tiometrically. A standard resistance, in series with the specimen, served to determine the dc current (generally about 80 ma) in the circuit. In order to eliminate spurious thermal electromotive forces, the circuit polarity was automatically reversed at 5-min intervals, and the mean of the two adjacent readings taken as the true electromotive force value. The discrepancy between the readings at reversed polarities was generally of the order of a few µ v, as all the spot-welded joints were contained within a volume of some 5 mm cube. The relative resistance (R T/R 273o) variation with temperature is tabulated below, and shown in Fig. 1, as measured during the first heating run. The discontinuous drop in resistance, corresponding to the a — ß transformation, started for both initial orientations at 1170°K; i.e., some 15°K above the accepted value of 882°C (1155°K). Judging by the temperature ranse of transformation—some 30°K for the single crystal and 20°K for the polycrystal-line specimen—this difference is believed caused by the solution of the oxygen present initially on the surface of the specimens. The general trend of the resistance vs temperature shown in Fi,;. 1 is in qualitative agreement with that previously reported for polycrystalline titanium metal. 2,3 Significant anisotropy is, however, indicated by the crossing over of the curves for <1120> and <0001> orientations at 273°, 650°, and 1000°K. The magnetic susceptibilities of some ores and the major rock formations of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining district were determined both in the laboratory by the use of the Gouy method and in the field with a Bison susceptibility unit. Trace element analysis of the same group of rock samples was also made using the atomic adsorption technique. Results of this preliminary study indicate that some correlation exists between the magnetic susceptibilities and the various rock formations. This may be useful for regional mapping and mineral exploration.

IN January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it was impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of -obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. In the following tabular statement it will be perceived that Pennsylvania produces nearly one-half of all the bituminous coal mined * Since this paper was read fuller reports from some of the States whose production had been "estimated" have modified the figures given. The most serious error is in California, which produces probably 200,000 tons less than these figures. Oregon and Washington territories also yield smaller amounts than here reported; but these reductions are probably fully compensated by fuller reports from other States that were here underestimated. The correct aggregate amount will not vary much from that here given. Early in 1876 I will be able to give a fuller and more accurate report for the year 1875.

Effective thermal conductivities of sandstones filled with stagnant fluids were measured using a steady-state technique. Data were obtained for seven sandstone samples, taken from four different locations and ranging in permeability from 18 to 590 md. The measurements with gases (helium, nitrogen, air and carbon dioxide) covered a pressure range from 0.039 psia to 400 psig. Data were taken for four liquids — n-heptane, methyl alcohol, 79.8 weight per cent glycerol-water solution and pure water at atmospheric pressure. The experimental results were used to evaluate the theoretical equations for predicting stagnant conductivities developed earlier 4 The low-pressure measurements permitted evaluation of the consolidation parameter bpDp/ks (necessary to utilize the theory) for the various types of sandstones. Using these characteristic values, the tbeoretical equations correlated well with the experimental conductivity data for the several fluids and rock samples. INTRODUCTION An aspect of heat transfer in solid-fluid systems of considerable current interest is the effective thermal conductivity of porous media. The stimulus for study of the subject arises from the need for sound procedures for designing thermal methods of petroleum production. The general system occurs when there exists a flow of fluid through the pores of the solid material. However, a logical starting point in developing a theory for predicting the effective thermal conductivity in the general system is to attack the special case when the porous solid is filled with stagnant fluid. Since the flow rates anticipated in thermal production processes are very low, such stagnant conductivities k,O are also of practical significance. Kunii and Smith4 recently reviewed the existing data for stagnant conductivities and proposed a theory for heat transfer in porous rocks. This leads to equations for predicting the stagnant conductivity as a function of the properties of the fluid and solid phases. The existing experimental information1-3,5,7,8 covered a range of porosities and agreed well with the theory. However, the available data were insufficient to examine critically the effects of two important properties on koe, — the thermal conductivity of the fluid and the pressure. The objectives of the present study are twofold: (1) to measure the effect on koe of (a) the pressure for gases, and (L) the thermal conductivity of the fluid kg for bloth gases and liquids; and (2) to determine for rocks of different porosities and permeabilities the apparent solid conductivity ks and the consolidation parameter bpDp/ks required in applying the theoletical equations. Measurements extrapolated to zero pressure are helpful in evaluating ks and the consolidation parameter. However, the extrapolations must be based upon data obtained at low pressures because in small pores the molecular conductivity of the fluid may be unusually depressed. This occurs when the mean free path of the molecules is of the same order of magnitude as the pore diameter, that is, in small-diameter pores at low pressures. The phenomenon has been studied recently by Schotte6in beds of unconsolidated fine particles. With particles in the size range of 45 to 200 microns, a significant reduction of kg with pressure was found even at absolute pressures greater than 1 atm. In the sandstones employed in the present investigation, pore diameters lower than those experienced by Schotte are likely, so that the effect would presumably be greater. SCOPE OF MEASUREMENTS Stagnant conductivities were measured for four types of sandstones using a total of seven samples. Accurate prediction of storm wave characteristics are needed for design of offshore structures. Statistical methods of random noise analysis provide techniques for predicting required wave properties. These techniques have been used to analyze and characterize storm wave profiles from Gulf of Mexico recording installations in 34, 65 and .98 ft of water. Correlations based on the results can be used to predict wave crest probabilities and wave shapes for a range of Gulf water depths and storm conditions. Example predictions of wave crest probability as a function of water depth for a particular set of storm conditions are given. INTRODUCTION Accurate predictions of wave crests and wave shapes are needed for design of offshore structures. With predictions of wave crests, platform deck elevations giving adequate protection from exposure to storm waves can be selected. Use of hydro-dynamic wave theories with the wave crest and wave shape predictions permits an estimate of the wave forces an offshore structure must withstand. Observation of ocean waves suggests use of statistical analysis for studying wave characteristics for water depths beyond the breaking wave zone; recent wave generation theories lend support to this approach. l-3 One of the most powerful methods of statistically analyzing wave profiles was introduced by Cartwright and Longuet-Higgins; most of the basic relations used were developed by Rice5.6 in studies of random noise theory. This method predicts wave crest elevation probabilities from two parameters characterizing a wave profile. The statistical approach also provides a means for predicting wave shapes. In the random noise model of a wave profile, surface elevation is represented as an infinite sum of sine waves with closely spaced frequencies and random phase angles. Power density is proportional to the sum of the squares of the amplitudes of sine waves having frequencies within a narrow band, and the distribution of power density as a function of frequency is called the power density spectrum, or power spectrum. The power spectrum characterizes an irregular sea, and hence finds use in motion studies of ships, barges and semisubmersible drilling platforms. From the power spectrum, a wave profile of any duration of time can, in principle, be calculated; this long wave profile depicts the many wave shapes to which a structure may be exposed. Thus, the statistical methods of wave analysis provide an approach to selecting wave shapes as well as wave crest elevations needed for design of offshore structures. For practical application of these techniques, power spectra and related quantities must be predicted from storm properties. Barber and Tucker 7 have reviewed correlations of wave properties and storm conditions. Their review summarizes work of Darbyshire,8 among others, in which a correlation of power spectra with wind intensity of the North Atlantic was developed. These results, plus more recent work by Pierson and Moskowitz and Kitaigorodskii,10 establish feasibility of correlation, but there is no theoretical basis for modifications extending the relations to other areas as remote as the Gulf of Mexico. Hence, to predict characteristics of Gulf of Mexico waves, a study of local observations is needed. This paper presents (1) a practical approach to computing wave profiles hat depict shapes of waves for use in force calculations, (2) a summary of relations for predicting probabilities of wave crest elevations, (3) correlations of parameters needed to apply these methods in the Gulf of Mexico and (4) examples of application of the techniques. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The following sections summarize relations needed to calculate wave profiles and to estimate wave crest probabilities. The effect of solute concentration and diffussivity on dendritic solidification of dilute binary aqueous solutions has been investigated; chlorides of sodium, potassium, lithiurn, and hydrogen were used as solutes. Dendrite spacings were measured in spherical droplets and in unidirectionally solidified specimens. In the droplets, the freezing rate is uniform over the entire specimen and remains constant from the beginning to the end of solidification. In the unidirec-tionally frozen specimens the freezing rate varies within a given volume of liquid during the solidification cycle; in addition, it varies with location uithin the specimen. Mass transport analysis has been used to calculate the supersaturation, AC, supercooling, AT, and transcerse growth velocity, V , of ice dendrites during solidijication from the dendrite spacings measured in the droplels. The ice dendrite spacing in a given solute increases lineary with the solule concentralion at a fixed freezing rate. The ualues of AC, AT, and V increase with an increase in solule concentration. The value of AT in the aqueous solution is of the same order of magnitude as in Al-Cu alloys of the same concentration; the dendrite spacings in Al-Cu alloys also increase with an increase in solute concentralion. For the jamily of aqueozrs solulions incestigaled, the dendrite spacing increases linearly with solute diffusivity at fixed values of concertralion and freezing ,rate. The values of ?C and ?T decrease, whereas the value of V increases with an increase in solule diffusicity. " Solute concentration and transport are therefore in]portant considerations in solidification of solutions. The influence of these factors on the dendritic solutions produced from metallic solutions is of practical significance since the properties of the solid aggre-gate are often strongly influenced by dendrite spacing.&apos;&apos;&apos; Alexander and Fthines3 found that dendrite spac- ings generally increase with solute concentration in several metallic systems. Michael and Bever1 have observed an increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings in dilute A1-Cu alloys. Rohatgi and AdamsJ have reported a linear increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings with increasing copper contents up to 28 pct in A1-Cu alloys. Bolling and Tiller"&apos; have theoretically examined the effects of solute concentration and diffusivity on the growth of cells and dendrites. Their analysis of dendritic growth assumes a steady-state growth and the maximum possible velocity for dendrite propagation. In addition, the quantitative analysis is restricted to dendrites of rotational symmetry and is therefore not directly applicable to the plate-shaped dendrites of ice obtained in the present study. There are practically no experimental observations of the effect of solute diffusivity on dendrite spacings in metallic systems. The reason appears to be the lack of experimental data on solute diffusion coefficients in liquid metallic solutions. The present work is concerned with the effect of solute concentration and diffusivity on dendritic solidification of dilute aqueous solutions: the solutes examined are potassium chloride. sodium chloride, lithium chloride. and hydrogen chloride. There were several reasons for selecting these solutes. The variation of dendrite spacing with freezing rate in these solutiolls is similar to that observed in A1-Cu alloys.8 These aqueous solutions have almost identical phase diagrams at dilute concentrations. ONE of the chief concerns of the Bethlehem Steel Co. naturally is the proper functioning of its organization. This involves the training of a continuous supply of younger men to fill the vacancies caused not only by the inevitable departure of older men, but also by the growth of existing establishment, and by expansion in new directions. It does not oper-ate a student training course with a fixed time schedule or with definite periods of rotation through the differ-ent divisions. To state the case positively, the gradu-ate&apos;s training course must operate continuously from the beginning of his employment through a long term of years. No period of weeks or months nor pair of years suffice to bring him into contact with all the com-binations needed to qualify him for the larger destiny toward which we hope he is headed. Our first step in selecting a college man is to require that he have a degree. We thus approximate the assur-ance that at least four annual siftings have reduced the chance that a non-worker may find himself in a job where work is necessary. The next step is to try to ascertain facts, from the graduate and from others who have known him at his home and in &apos;his college, to indi-cate whether our opportunities offer him a career that will challenge his continuing interest, and hold him to tenacious effort against all happenings. We aim to avoid knowingly bringing into our organization a man who will not develop in it enough enthusiasm to keep him happily striving. Having made our selections, we assemble the gradu-ates into a probationary observation circuit. We-put ourselves under their observation by taking them in small groups, usually of two to four men, on a circuit of every part of the Bethlehem plant, in which every manufacturing principle of our steel business is ex-emplified. The probationers work at something from day to day, with their hands if it can be arranged; otherwise in questioning, examining, and note-taking. Their observations include talks with superintendents, foremen, and workmen, the conditions under which workmen labor, apparatus, machinery, methods, design and operation of plant.
