The directory is funded by the US Bureau of Mines and includes a sampling of computer usage in operating and manufacturing companies, consulting firms, computer companies, research organizations, universities, and various US government agencies. General references to computer applications throughout the mining industry are discussed as well as the availability of programs to interested organizations or individuals.

IN this country steel made in a Siemens furnace or Bessemer converter, is generally tapped into a ladle or shoe, and then drawn through an aperture in its base into the various moulds. In order to regulate the flow of the molten mass a refractory valve is arranged at the aperture. A plumbago nozzle is fixed firmly in this aperture, and a stopper of like material is fitted to it, making a socket valve. In order to raise and depress this stopper at will, a rod is fastened-to it, extending through, the metal and over the brim of the ladle, where it is bent back in a half circle and secured in a slide. This slide plays vertically in a frame, permanently fastened to the outside of the ladle, and is moved by a lever having as a fulcrum a pin fixed in this frame, one end, of the lever being temporarily fixed to the slide, and the other end being moved by hand. Reference being had to the drawing (see Plate 1, Fig. 1), E is the nozzle, D is the stopper, A is the rod, protected as hereinafter described, C is the cast-iron framework, B is the wrought-iron slide, B' is the offset into which the rod, A, enters, and is secured in the usual manner by a key, a. Section J, K, shows the manner of hanging the lever. J is a pin attached to the slide by which the end of the lever raises the slide, B. J is the fulcrum fastened to the frame, C. K (Fig. 1) is a hand-nut fastening the slide, B, to the frame, C, at will. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of ladle, showing the outside working of the parts above described. It is the common practice to protect the rod, A, by a coating of clay and fire-sand, kneaded to the right consistency and applied to the rod, and then thoroughly dried. Just before casting, the plumbago stopper, D, is heated at its extremity to redness separate from the ladle and, at the moment of pouring, is placed in the ladle and slide, and adjusted as well as practicable. Some very serious defects ensue, causing much trouble and vexation as well as actual loss. The fire-clay coating in drying becomes cracked and seamy, and at its best is more or less loose on the rod. THE last few decades have witnessed the introduction of many new nonmetallic mineral products and changes in the use of many of those already well known. Among these is diatomite, formerly employed as a mild abrasive and, at one time, as the absorbent material in dynamite. Now nearly 100,000 tons a year are mined and milled into such things as filter aids, cement admixtures, insulants, fillers, absorbents, cosmetics, cleansers, etc. Pumice, commonly regarded as only an abrasive, is now also employed as an insulant, as light-weight aggregate and as a concrete admixture. With increasing use of insulants, light-weight aggregates, and acoustic stuccos and plasters in the building trades, both these mate-rials should find increased application. Very large deposits occur in eastern Oregon and have been studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oregon State Mining Board.

WE are accustomed to think that we are efficient in the United States, particularly with respect to such things as mining and manufacturing. The conduct of the war has demanded in England and in France a complete readjustment of manufacturing methods and plans, and today England is probably as efficient a country as there is in the world, not even excepting Germany. This is all the more remarkable because it has been notorious for years that England has been inefficient in her manufacturing and the country has been flooded with things "Made in Germany." Today England is almost a socialistic community and the State is doing almost everything. England is now in such a position that practically everyone in the country is engaged in industry necessary for the conduct of the war, and this has been accomplished by increasing the efficiency both of her tools and of her man power. In the United States we certainly have been efficient so far as machines and perhaps so far as methods have been concerned, but we have not been efficient iii the utilization of our man power. Before the war, our labor was undoubtedly far more efficient than that of England, but it certainly was not so highly efficient as it should have been, and the problem that confronts us today, and will all the more confront us after the war, is to make our man power efficient. England has had a taste of what you may call State Socialism, and her laboring men are not going to be content to return to the old order of things. There is one feature of the labor problem in England which has permitted her to reach this condition of state socialism with comparative rapidity; this is that practically all of her laborers are English; she has little or no foreign population. While an Englishman may he a strong union man and ready to fight his employer tooth and nail, at heart he is still a British subject, and when his country was in danger he rose to the occasion.

AMONG the minerals exhibited at the Atlanta Exhibition of 1881, soapstone, kaolin, and asbestos were well represented. The first two occur in large quantities, of very pure quality, throughout the South. The last is somewhat limited in amount, yet in certain localities it exists in masses sufficiently large to pay for working; in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama it has been mined with some profit. I would, in this paper, call special attention to the minerals soapstone and kaolin, because their many valuable qualities seem to have been al most entirely overlooked by our Southern manufacturers. Steatite, particularly, occurs in such large quantities, and generally in such close proximity to the great iron regions of Alabama and Georgia, that it is amazing that the iron companies will persist in sending abroad under. heavy expense for firebrick. It would require a much smaller sum of money to quarry this rock and place it at the various furnaces ; and the results obtained, I am sure, would prove its superiority over the majority of firebrick brought into this region. Soapstone, as well as kaolin, is found throughout the metamorphic regions of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Below-will be found seven analyses that I have made of this mineral, taken from various points in the four States above mentioned. I have also subjected these same specimens to severe fire-tests, and the results were very satisfactory. The tests were conducted in the following manner: Small portions of the compact variety were carefully weighed and placed in a Fletcher's new crucible furnace for gas, and subjected for half an hour to a heat that will in 12 minutes fuse iron. The only effect upon these specimens was a slight change in color .to a darker shade, a small loss in weight, due evidently to the evaporation of water, and, in one or two specimens, a slight degree of fusion on the sharp edges. The first specimen subjected to investigation was taken from a large outcropping in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Specific gravity, 2.88 ; hardness, 1.9; color, blue gray. INTRODUCTION The Third Theory of Comminution, oftentimes called the Bond Theory, was first published by Fred C. Bond in 1952. Since then, it has been widely used in the milling industry to size crushing and grinding equipment as well as to predict and evaluate their performance. Although two other comminution theories were advanced almost a century earlier, one by Rittinger, 1867, and the other by Kick, 1885, their use was limited because they did not agree with actual commercial comminution systems (Bond, 1961). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced in particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. For particles of similar shape, the crack tip length is equivalent to the square root of one-half the surface area, and the new crack length is proportional to [(1/vT - vF)]; where P and F are particles diameter of product and feed, respectively. For practical calculations, the particle diameter can be expressed in terms of the 80% passing sizes, P and F, respectively. Therefore, the work input is given by, [10 _ 10', W = Wi [7P_7F(1)] Where W = the energy input to the mill, (kwh/t) Wi = Work Index, (kwh/t) P = square sieve opening which 80% of the product passes, (microns) F = square sieve opening which 80% of the feed passes, (microns) Equation (1) is the mathematical statement of the Third Theory, or the Bond equation. Numerically, the work index is the energy required in kwh/t to reduce a given material from theoretically infinite feed size to 80% passing 100 microns. The work index of a particular material is determined in the laboratory by conducting the standard Bond grindability test. Bond developed separate tests for the rod mill and the ball mill. The simplified test method described in this paper, which is used at Anaconda Research Center to approximate the work index, is an alternative procedure to the ball mill

The region of metallic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 6 km (19,700 ft). Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific ground water aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate ground water quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum capacities of more than 170 L/sec (2700 gpm) for individual production water wells. Results of investigations conducted by the authors demonstrate that ground water reservoirs in the Andean Highlands comprise a source of large quantities of water for the mineral industry.

This paper discusses a new oil recovery process called the "miscible slug process." This process involves the injection of propane or LPG into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The operating conditions are maintained so that the slug is miscible with both the reservoir oil and the injected gas phase. Thus, a miscible phase displacement is achieved, and high recoveries are obtained from the area of the reservoir contacted. The most striking discovery of the laboratory study which included displacements from cores up to 123 ft in length was that relatively small slugs of LPG are effective over reservoir distances in the miscible displacement of oil. This makes possible the commercial application of the process. The important factors controlling the size of the slug are: (I) reservoir length, (2) reservoir fluid composition, and (3) reservoir pressure at the displacement front. Of lesser importance are the effects of injection rate and porous medium type. Questions which have not been completely answered deal with the effects of gravity and reservoir inhomogeneities on the process. INTRODUCTION One of the major problems facing the oil industry today is recovery of the large fraction of the discovered oil which will remain unrecovered unless some new processes are found. Water flooding has been one successful method used to increase recovery over natural depletion. But even successful water floods may leave 25 to 40 per cent of the pore space filled with residual oil. Recently a process which involves the use of thermal energy has been reported1,'*' which may prove useful in increasing recovery from shallow reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. This paper deals with a new oil recovery process involving use of miscible phases to displace the oil from the reservoir. Miscible phase displacement oil has been an intriguing idea because the elimination of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to 100 per cent recovery in the areas contacted by the miscible displacing phase. The big deterrent in the past to the practice of miscible phase displacement has been the high cost involved in using large volumes of solvent in the process. The use of high pressure gas to achieve a miscible phase displacement of reservoir oil has been reported4,5 as one economically feasible method. However, this process calls for the maintenance of pressures above 3,000 psi at the dis-placement front. The process described in this paper is not restricted to high reservoir pressures; the only qualification being that the slug of material which is injected into the reservoir must be miscible with both the displaced oil 2nd the displacing phase. Two such cases are the use of an alcohol slug followed by water to achieve a mis-cable water flood, and the use of a low boiling hydrocarbon slug such as propane followed by gas to achieve a miscible gas drive. This paper will deal specifically with the propane dug process. This process will obtain a miscible phase displacement at pressures as low as about 1,200 psi at a reservoir temperature 01 150°F. The process is very simple. The propane displaces oil completely at one front because it is miscible with the oil, and gas displaces the propane completely at a second or trailing front because it is miscible with the propane. A small band of propane should thus remain wedged between the gas and oil phases. This idea has been called the "miscible slug process."6 Unfortunately, the propane slug will become diluted as it flows through the reservoir. This results from a mixing action since the fluids flow through a complex reservoir porous medium rather than simple capillaries. Fig. 1 diagrams a miscible slug displacement. The effects of some of

An experimental and theoretical treatment of the depressing effect of inorganic electrolytes on the amine flotation of quartz is presented. Experimental data obtained for the amine flotation of quartz as a function of pH with potassium nitrate as depressant was used to test the models for the effectiveness of inorganic ions as depressants. The validity of commonly used assumptions are examined. The surface tension data obtained for dodecylammonium acetate solutions as a function of KNO3, concentration indicated that the collector adsorption on bubble cannot be neglected in the treatments, since this adsorption changes significantly with the addition of the inorganic electrolyte. It also indicated the possibility of significant changes in the specific adsorption potential of the collector occurring with the addition of inorganic electrolytes.

THERE have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed ; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steam-engines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether. The sessile-drop technique was employed to study the effect of atmosphere and alloy additions of titanium and chromium on the surface tension and contact angle of nickel on sapphire substrates at 1500oC. Shear tests were conducted on the solidified sessile drops. The liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel on sapphire was found to be 1747 ergs per sq cm, with a contact angle of 109.6 deg. The surface tension and contact angle were not affected significantly by the four atmospheres, vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen. Small additions of titanium and chromium decreased the contact angle and for the same alloy content, contact angles were lower in pure argon than in pure hydrogen. On the basis of shear-test results , the most probable cause for adhesion in the Ni-Al2O system is the formation of NiO:Al2O3 spinel at the interface; in the titanium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is thought to be due to a mechanical interlocking effect; in the chromium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is believed to be the result of solid-solution formation involving Cr2O3 and Al2O3 at the interface. In the last few years there has been considerable interest in reinforcing metals with ceramic whiskers. It has been postulated that, by reinforcing nickel with sapphire whiskers, high-temperature strengths su- perior to those of the best current nickel alloys can be achieved.' To fabricate a whisker-metal composite having optimum density and strength, understanding of wettability and adherence in the system is of prime importance. Although there has been some previous research in this a a need for further studies has been cited4-8 to understand better the effects of impurities, alloys additions, and atmosphere on the wetting and bonding of metals to metal oxides. The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors involved in the wetting and adherence of nickel/nickel alloys to sapphire (single-crystal a Al2O3). Sessile-drop experiments were conducted in vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen, to determine the effect of atmosphere on the contact angle of the metals on sapphire, and the liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel. The solidified sessile drops were sheared from the sapphire substrate to measure the bond strength between the metal and ceramic. The alloy additions chosen were titanium and chromium since both enhance the wetting of nickel on sapphire.2, 3c Also, titanium is commonly used when brazing metal-to-ceramic seals to improve adherence. Since chromium forms an oxide that is completely soluble in sapphire, it was thought that the oxide could serve as a transition phase to promote bonding between the Ni-Cr alloy and sapphire. I) EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The sessile-drop apparatus was a horizontal furnace, with an induction-heated, cylindrical molybdenum susceptor in a water-cooled Pyrex chamber. THE means relied on to attain uniformity in Bessemer steel may be enumerated as follows I. The appearance of the flame. II. The appearance of the slag. III. The spectrum of the flame. IV. Examination of the steel itself. At present, I wish briefly to bring forward a few considerations with reference to the last two mentioned, namely, the conditions favoring the employment of the spectroscope and examination of the steel. From the amount of careful investigation which has been devoted to the examination of the Bessemer flame by the spectroscope, both on the part of scientists and practical metallurgists, one might reasonably expect some results definite and satisfactory in their nature, first, as regards the nature of the flame, and second, as to the practical value of the spectroscope as a guide in conducting the process. We find, in fact, however, that uncertainty and confusion still exist. In Germany, where this subject has received the greatest attention, it is now very generally conceded that manganese is the cause of the well-known groups of dark bands that characterize the Bessemer spectrum. Nor is it easy to see how we can avoid accepting this conclusion, when Wedding and Von Lichtenfels have produced the manganese spectrum and found it to correspond closely with that shown by the Bessemer flame. But it is evident, on a moment's reflection, as Roscoe has recently brought forward, that manganese cannot be the only cause of the Bessemer spectrum, for we notice the characteristic bands quite as

A kinetic study of the hydrogen reduction of taconite from the Wisconsin Gogebic range was made over the temperature range from 500° to 1000°C on eleven size fractions from 4 to 150 mesh. Two stages of reduction were observed, a rapid initial reaction followed by a slower reaction presumably taking place at an internal receding FexO-Fe interface. Calculated mean activation energies for the two reactions were 7800 and 14,600 cal per mole respectively. In recent years there has been an increased interest in the direct reduction of iron oxide ores to metallic iron by means of gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide.1,2 These investigations have been motivated by the desire to develop a process that will by-pass the blast furnace in the production of steel. The majority of these processes have been developed to produce metallic iron by direct reduction from high-grade iron oxide ores.3"5 Very little work has been done on the low-grade siliceous iron oxide ores.6"8 The work reported here is directed principally towards the fundamental aspect of the reduction reactions of siliceous iron oxide ores, since the practical aspects of the gaseous reductant process were discussed previously. The ore used in the investigation was obtained originally from the United States Bureau of Mines10 trench sample of the Yale member of the Wisconsin Gogebic range iron formation. The Yale taconite has an average analysis of 28.2 pct Fe and approximately 50 pct SiO2. Chemically, these nonmagnetic taconites contain on the average about 53 pct silica and 30 pct Fe. An average analysis calculated fron the USBM10 figures for a composite of the five members (Norrie, Plymouth, Pence, Pabst, and ale) of the iron formation is given in Table I. Mineralogically, based on previous X-ray diffraction and other studies, the principal minerals are hematite (Fe2O3), geothite (Fe2O3.H2O), and quartz (SiO2). Minor amounts of iron containing silicates, siderite (FeCO3) and magnetite (FeO. Fe2O3) are present.10,11 The iron minerals and the quartz are finely disseminated requiring extremely fine grinding for liberation. For the experimental work, the ore sample was screened into a number of size fractions, the analyses and densities of which are given in Table II. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The reduction experiments were carried out in a 24 in. by 2 in. ID nichrome-wound vertical-tube furnace mounted on a stand. A 1 1/2 in. OD zirconium-oxide combustion tube was used inside the furnace to contain the atmosphere. To the top of this combustion tube was joined a pyrex ground-glass joint to which was attached a glass bulb with a small (1.0 mm) opening at the center, and with two outlets controlled with a stopcock on each side. A pyrex-glass joint with connections to three stopcock joints for introducing hydrogen, nitrogen, and mixtures of hydrogen and nitrogen gas was joined to the tapered bottom of the combustion tube. The sized ore fractions were contained in a 1 in. diameter by 1 1/2 in. 150-mesh nickel screen basket. The basket was suspended in the furnace from a balance by means of a supporting nickel wire which hung freely inside the combustion tube. Development of the Bowers-Campbell zinc deposit, located in the Shenandoah Valley two miles northwest of Timberville, Va., was commenced in 1956 by the Tri-State Zinc Co. The occurrence of lead-zinc mineralization in this area has been known for many years, but the first serious exploration program was initiated in 1951 by the geologic staff of Tri-State Zinc Co. Ordovician dolomites. The deposit is approximately 700 ft long, 100 ft wide, and 475 ft thick. Its projected plan has an elongated ovoid shape, where- as the profile appears boot-shaped with the upper portion outcropping. Vertical cross sections show the lense as having been thrust-faulted along certain bedding planes. The movement along these bedding thrusts varies greatly and in one case, has offset the deposit so as to divide it into an upper and lower orebody. The breccia lense strikes parallel to the N 34" E strike of enclosing strata.

The Taviche district is about 12 miles from the town of Ocotlan in the State of Oaxaca, and about 250 miles south of the City of Mexico. Its altitude rises to something more than 5,000 ft.; and although within the tropics (latitude about 17° N.) the climate is mild and salubrious, neither excessively hot in summer nor cold in winter. The phrase, "perpetual spring," which has been applied to it, aptly describes the weather during my stay.
