This paper reports the results of studies of the impact properties of quenched and tempered alloy-steel plates as a function of sulfur content. It was found that the impact energy levels decreased continuously as the sulfur content increased and that there was a straight-line relationship between impact energy and sulfur content when plotted on logarithmic coordinates. Cross rolling raised the level of these Lines for transverse tests and lowered the level for logitudinal tests proportionately to the amount of cross rolling. ALTHOUGH it has been generally recognized that, for applications in which notch toughness is critical, the sulfur content of the steels used should be held to a low value, quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness has not been available. For such applications, it is a common practice to specify minimum impact values, and in order that these may be met consistently it is important that the steel producer know quantitatively the effect of sulfur on notch toughness so that realistic sulfur content limits can be applied to the steels they produce. In many instances, particularly in flat-rolled products, impact properties are specified in the direction transverse to the principal rolling direction, so that the factors affecting the anisotropy or directionality of impact properties are also of concern to the steel producer. For some applications, furthermore, it is a common practice to increase the sulfur content of steels in order to improve their machinability, and, in such instances, the effect of this practice on notch toughness may often be of concern. This paper reports on an investigation, carried out at Battelle Memorial Institute, designed to furnish this quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness and also to furnish further information on the factors affecting the anisotropy of impact properties in wrought heat-treated alloy steels. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental steels were of intended base analysis: 0.30 pct C, 0.80 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 2.5 pct Ni, 0.80 pct Cr, and 0.45 pct Mo. Steels were made with sulfur contents varying from 0.005 to 0.179 pct. The steels were prepared from 600-lb induction-furnace melts. Steels containing 0.020 pct or more sulfur (at meltdown) were melted from a charge of ingot iron (except for one heat): lower-sulfur steels were made from electrolytic iron. The charge consisted of ingot or electrolytic iron, ferrosilicon to give 0.10 pct Si, and ferromanganese to give 0.05 pct Mn. At meltdown, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, iron phosphide, and pyrite were added followed in sequence by ferrochromium, sili-comanganese, ferrosilicon, and ferromanganese. The slag was then removed and graphite added to give the desired carbon content. Bath temperature was adjusted to 2850°F and, when no other additions were to follow, 2 lb per ton of aluminum was added, immediately before tapping. Compositions of the experimental steels appear in Table I. Analyses are from single determinations, except sulfur which was analyzed in duplicate. A test sample (3 in. in diam by 6 in. long) and a 575-1b ingot were poured from each heat. The test sample was poured in a sand mold; the cooling rates of the test sample and the large ingot were approximately the same. Chemical analysis chips and metal lographic specimens were taken from the test samples. The ingot was 8 in. sq at the base and 9 in. sq at the top. A 5 X 5 X 6-in. sand mold hot top was completely filled in teeming the ingot. After solidification, the mold was stripped from the ingot which cooled to room temperature. Ingots were reheated to 2250"F and rolled to 1.9-in. slabs on a commercial mill. The slabs were box-cooled to room temperature. Sections of the 1.9-in. slabs were heated to 2250°F and rolled on a Battelle laboratory mill according to one of three schedules: 1) rolled straightaway to 0.5-in. plate; 2) rolled straightaway to 1.3-in. thickness, then cross rolled to 0.5-in. plate (29 pct cross rolling); or 3) cross rolled from 1.9-in. to 0.5-in.-thick plate (46 pct cross rolling). The 0.5-in.-straight- or cross-rolled plates were normalized at 1700°F for 1 hr and then water quenched from 1600°F. Plates were then tempered 2 hr at 1240°, 1170°, 1080°, or 860°F to obtain Rockwell C hardness of 25, 30, 35, and 40, respectively. Tempering was followed by quenching to room temperature to avoid temper embrittlement. Slack-quenched plates were isothermally transformed for 26 min at 800°F, quenched, and tempered 2 hr at 1170°F. Pearlitic microstructures were obtained by holding 168 hr at 1200° F, followed by quenching. Charpy V-notch specimens were taken both transverse and longitudinal to the main rolling direction, notched perpendicular to the plate surface, and tested. ANYONE doubting prosperity in the mining industry should visit the Kootenays of British Columbia where the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. is kept busy running new power lines and connecting mines and mills with lines already in service. Quoting from an inspired statement "The four hydro-electric plants of the West Kootenay Power & Light Co. on Kootenay River have been in continuous operation." At the recent 35th annual meeting of the Eastern' British Columbia Boards of Trade held in Nelson, a two-day session indicated unusual activity. The following information was obtained through personal contact, through the press, and by hearsay. Much of it has been checked and proved accurate. Reversing the order of the flowsheet. Secretary J. AT the Tulsa meeting of the A. P. I., the following reso-lutions, expressive of the policy of that organization, were among those adopted: RESOLVED, That we endorse the conclusion of the Federal Oil Conservation Board in its report of September, 1926, that the prevention of the waste of gas incident to the pro-duction of oil is of paramount importance in the conserva-tion and economical production of oil, and the president of the Institute is requested to appoint a committee of seven to devise and suggest to this board, or the executive com-mittee, such measures as will enable the industry, while continuing to meet the consumption requirements for pe-troleum and its products, to conserve in its natural state such reserves of petroleum as may not then be required for consumption. RESOLVED, That the president of the Institute appoint a committee of seven to formulate and recommend to this board or its executive committee, at the earliest practicable date, a program of legislation; Federal and State, to be advocated by the Institute giving sanction and effect to agreements by oil producers for the curtailment of produc-tion in pools where and during periods when there is over-production, having for their purpose the economical and orderly production of oil.

AS far as could be ascertained, no one had previously investigated the creep strength of silicon poly-crystals. Literature has appeared showing evidence for plastic deformation in silicon single crystals and whiskers.*1"6 Also the fact that germanium, a material of similar crystal structure to silicon undergoes plastic deformation under stress at temperatures above about 60 pct of its melting temperature, has been known for some time.2"4'7 This investigation was performed for the purpose of determining the strength and ductility of silicon polycrystals under creep conditions that would give fairly long times to rupture. PROCEDURE The silicon specimen blanks were obtained by first placing granulated transitor grade silicon (99.999 + pct pure) in a silica crucible. The crucible was surrounded by a graphite susceptor, and induction heating was used for melting the silicon in a vacuum furnace. Blank specimens were formed by freezing molten silicon onto a polycrystalline seed of silicon in a vacuum furnace. The seed was attached to a motor driven revolving rod. As silicon solidified, this rod was gradually withdrawn from the melt. A shape with a contracted center section was obtained by varying the rate of withdrawal from the melt. Specimens for the creep-rupture tests were ground from these "pulled" blanks. Creep-rupture tests were performed in spring loaded machines under constant load at 1800" and 2000° F. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A test specimen which was sectioned longitudinally is shown in the photomacrograph in Fig. 1. Very little deformation has taken place in the portion of the specimen shown, however, slip lines from several slip systems within the same grain, and deformation band formation was seen. The elongated appearance of the grains is due to the method of growing the specimens. One of the most interesting aspects of the results obtained from the creep-rupture tests was the high strength and the accompanying large amount of ductility. The data obtained is listed in Table I which shows the stress to rupture in 100 hr at 2000°F is between 8000 and 9000 psi. This indicates that silicon's strength at 2000°F is about equal to that of the best commercial super-alloys. It is important to mention that silicon has less than 1/3 the density of iron-, nickel-, and cobalt-base alloys. The usual type alloys for high-temperature applications

THE LIFE and works of Alexander Agassiz, first president of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., were recalled to memory when a monument bearing his statue was unveiled in Agassiz Park, at Calumet, Mich., on Sept. 26, The statue is the work of Paul W. Bartlett, of New York, and was erected by George R. Agassiz, eldest son of Alexander Agassiz. We are indebted to Rodolphe L. Agassiz, now president of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated, for the accompanying photograph of the statue. The principal address at the unveiling ceremony was delivered by Allen F. Rees, of Houghton, who said, in part: To the world at large Alexander Agassiz was preeminently the man of science. With all his devotion to the industrial life of this district, he found the time to devote to the con-tinuation of his work of scientific research which had been the life work of his fa-ther, Louis Agassiz. Not only did he acquire eminence for his scientific at-tainments and learn-ing, but he was recognized and hon-ored throughout the civilized world for his achievements and accomplishments in the realm of original research. His work in the fields of nat-ural science, in oceanography, in marine zoology, and in other similar lines of research, has added much to our knowledge of the world's mysteries. His life was one of accomplishment also in the industrial world. The union in one life of acknowledged achievement as a scientist and the accomplishment of great results in the prac-tical industrial world is a rare thing, and its possibility has never been exemplified in greater measure than in his life and its results.

Mr. Agelopas is to be congratulated on a fine paper. Although the presentation was simple and concise, you will all appreciate that a great deal of hard work went into the development of this highly successful repair method. Earlier this year Bethlehem invited a group of our people to witness lug repairs at their Sparrow's Point plant. We have since made lug replacements on a trial basis using their method. The repaired moulds are now back in service. We will compare their performance with regular moulds and with moulds repaired by a technique developed by Dofasco weld shop personnel. I would like to explain briefly some of the various types of ingot mould repairs presently undertaken at Dofasco. The first problem will be familiar to most of you. The lower inside edge of a mould wall may be damaged by spalling, a runout or by the washing action of steel deflected from a badly worn stool cavity. We repair this type of damage by welding.

A series of copper-alumina dispersion strengthened alloys were prepared using three different copper and two different alumina powder sizes. Improvements in strength of up to ten times that of pure copper were found in room-temperature as well as elevated-temperature stress-rupture tests. Conductivity values remained from 70 to 90 pct that of pure copper. The best alloys were based on the finest metal powder (1 p) and contained from 7.5 to 10-0 vol pet of 0.018 or 0,033 p alumina. DISPERSION strengthening of metals consists of strengthening a metal matrix by the addition of oxides or other refractory constituents, followed by strain hardening, in order to reinforce the base material and extend its temperature range of application. Since the discovery of SAP by lrmannl and Von zeerleder2 in 1949, many investigators have reported data obtained on a variety of metal-inert oxide alloys.3-7 The present work deals with the mechanical mixing of copper and alumina powders. While several techniques of introducing the second phase have been investigated to date, mechanical mixing so far has been recognized as the simplest, least expensive, and most universally applicable technique that can be used to obtain an ultrafine dispersion of inert particles. In the present case, the effects of changing the metal particle size, the oxide particle size and the volume percent of oxide were investigated. This work is an extension of a previous study.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials were three different grades of copper powder and two different alumina powders. The three metallic powders were -74 µ(- 200 mesh) electrolytic copper powder consisting of irregular equiaxed particles having a normal screen distribution and analyzing 99.5 pct Cu, and two powders having a 5-µ and 1-µ particle size, average, respectively. The latter powders were produced by the hydrogen reduction of purified sulfate solutions at elevated temperature and pressure and were furnished by the Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd. The alumina used was obtained from Godfrey L. Cabot Co., under the trade name of Alon C, one batch of powder having a particle size of 0.018 µ, the other a particle size of 0.033 µ. The crystal structure of these alumina powders was found to be cubic gamma. Each batch of powder was mixed in a Waring Blendor for a total of 15 min, followed by a low-temperature reduction in hydrogen and vacuum compacting in cylinders which were hydrostatically pressed at 35,000 psi to give a compact that could be handled conveniently. Six of the compacts were hydrogen sintered at 900°C while the remaining four were sintered at 1000°C. Subsequently, all compacts were hot extruded at 760°C with a reduction of area ratio of approximately 20 to 1. Evaluation of alloys included density and resistivity measurements, room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests at 450°C plus one other temperature per alloy, hardness tests, microstruc-tural examination, X-ray analysis of the dispersed phase after dissolving the metal phase, and oxidation studies on two of the alloys. A vacuum-melted, wrought copper rod was tested together with these alloys for comparison purposes. RESULTS Table I is a summary of the compositions, sintering temperatures, densities and conductivity values of the ten alloys prepared. A few years ago H. M. Cyr, working in the Research Laboratories of The New Jersey Zinc Co., produced a few pounds of zinc1 of such purity that no other elements were detected in it by spectrographic analysis, using the facilities then available. This zinc contained less than one ten-thousandth of one per cent of metallic impurities.&apos; During the decade that followed upon the laboratory production of this "spectro-graphically pure" zinc, commercial developments brought about the production of large tonnages of zinc of purity exceeding 99.99 per cent, and today zinc of 99.999 per cent purity is produced and marketed as "chemically pure" zinc. Typical analyses of present supplies of high-purity zinc are given in Table 1. The keen and close competition now ruling in the iron and steel manufacture requires imperatively, in the design and construction of the machinery employed, the fulfilment in the highest practicable degree of two cardinal conditions: economy of labor in operation, and durability. The daily pay-roll and the cost of repairs far outweigh in importance the interest on the first cost of this part of the plant. It is believed that the apparatus here described will be found to embody, in these respects, a substantial imprevement upon the present manner of handling ingots and moulds at our large steel-works. Although it includes a number of novel features, it consists essentially in the choice and grouping of certain approved economical devices specially suited to the particular service required. Fig. 1 is a plan, and Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of parts of a Bessemer converting-house, together with a small portion of the blooming-mill—suficient to illustrate clearly the means and manner of handling the ingots and moulds. Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [&apos;]Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths. AT elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible&apos; and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscale formation) in alloys of silver with 2, 7 5, and 30 per cent of copper The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver&apos; Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detail 5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically, some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the I-b and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation, i e , they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them In a study of 4o alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silver -The silver alloys employed in the oxidation studies were prepared in heats of 30 grams each from high-purity silver (99 993 per cent Ag)* and the purest avail-

IN spite of the fact that in 1944 Canada experienced a decline in production of all her leading base metals-nickel, zinc, lead, and copper; despite uncured headaches in the coal-mining industry; and cheerfully ignoring a still further drop in gold, the most valuable product of her mines, which had the lowest output of any year since 1931, the Canadian miner retains the traditional optimism of miners everywhere as he looks forward to the postwar period. Some factors should keep the Canadian mining industry from being too optimistic of the coming era of peace, but the fraternity generally holds that its confident attitude towards the future is based on sound reasons. The decline in production in the Canadian mining industry last year can be almost wholly attributed to the serious shortage of labor and the difficulty in obtaining transport and supplies in remote areas. Some falling off occurred in the demand for certain strategic metals, but the diversion of gold miners, especially, without replacements being obtainable, to direct war work or allied pursuits, was certainly the principal cause of the reduced output in 1944. But that is a situation which will right itself at the close of the conflict.

SEVERAL methods are available for determining pole figures by X-ray means.&apos; The earlier film methods have been replaced by techniques in which the intensities are measured by Geiger counters on an X-ray diffractometerZm7. These methods utilize either flat transmission or reflection samples,214°8 cylindrical specimens,3 or spherical specimens.7 A single transmission or reflection sample will not yield information over the complete pole figure. The cylindrical specimens suggested by Nortod and the spherical specimen of Jetter and Borie7 have the advantage of allowing the whole pole figure to be obtained without any corrections to the intensity for absorption, There is a lower limit to the size of sheet which can be conveniently studied, however, and sample preparation can be rather tedious. Probably the most common method today for determining the complete pole figure is that developed by Schulz. A flat reflection sample is used for determining the pole figure from the center out to about 70". Because of the geometry of the system used, little or no correction for absorption or irradiated volume is necessary.4&apos;6 A separate transmission sample is used for the region near the edge of the pole figure. This procedure requires two separate samples, one of which must be a thin carefully-prepared transmission sample. Furthermore, since the reflection and transmission data are in different arbitrary intensity units, a region of overlap must be obtained, and the intensity data from one set of measurements converted to units of the other. These are serious disadvantages of this method, and they point out the need for a simplified procedure. Since the reflection technique can be used for planes whose normals lie up to about 70° from the sample surface normal, it is apparent that a complete pole figure can be obtained by reflection alone if sample surfaces are cut at oblique angles to the rolling plane Specifically, if a rolled sample is cut so that the normal to the surface formed lies equidistant (54" 44&apos;) from the rolling plane normal, rolling direction, and transverse direction, then complete information for one quadrant of the pole figure can be obtained by reflection from the surface. Fig. 1 shows this oblique surface, as well as the position of the pole of this surface in the pole figure. When a surface has been cut oblique to the rolling plane, the standard polar stereographic net is inconvenient to use, and it would be more desirable to have the center of the net coincide with the pole of the oblique plane. Fig. 2 shows such a net, where the center has been offset 54&apos; 44&apos; to correspond to a specimen cut as in Fig. 1. This net was in effect obtained by rotating a standard polar stereographic net 54" 44&apos; with the help of a Wulff net. With the experimental setup used. a sample can be cut from plate of 1/2-in. thickness or br Gen- erally thinner sheet is under investigation, and a composite specimen must be used. A convenient procedure has been to bond together, using epoxy resin, sufficient sheets to form a cube. These are clamped in a vise, and when dry, the whole vise is rotated and a flat surface ground at the required angle. The sample is then mounted inside a larger steel ring using Koldmount, the backside ground flat and parallel to the approximate desired thickness. The sample is then polished and etched to remove any effects of cold working during grinding. With this method only one quadrant of the pole figure is obtained. Often pole figures show symmetry around the rolling and transverse directions, and any slight asymmetry is due to scatter. Should the pole figure not be symmetrical, four oblique surfaces, corresponding to the four quadrants of the pole figure, would have to be examined. In most cases there is symmetry at least around the rolling direction, which reduces to two the number of quadrants to be investigated. For many purposes all that is required is an average polefigure for the four quadrants. This canreadilybe obtained with composite specimens of sheet material, where sheets Corresponding to each of the four quadrants can be intermixed. The four quadrants can be obtained by considering sheet in the normal position, and by rotatiolls of 180" around the sheet normal, the rolling direction, and the transverse direction. If desired, the whole thickness of the sheet can be used, yielding an average of the surface and interior textures; or the surface material can be removed from each sheet, resulting in a pole figure for the center alone. Eugene S. Meieran of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has independently developed the same method. His results, adapted to a pole figure goniometer with a specimen spiraler, will be described in another publication.

Sam Leber (General Electric Refractory Metals Laboratory)—I think that the authors should differentiate between the curved grains obtained by swaging and the crumpled grains produced by drawing. This can be seen most easily in the transverse sections of Fig. 2d, and is also apparent in Fig. 2c. This difference in structure indicates that the mode of deformation shou1d affect the texture, since the cylindrical texture should be maintained or even increased by the curved grains developed by swaging. Drawing, on the other hand, crumples the grains. This should convert the cylindrical texture into a normal fiber texture. This has been substantiated by a comparison of tungsten wires fabricated by similar drawing and swaging schedules. Although cylindrical textures have been detected in drawn iron wires, they were weak in comparison to tungsten wires which included swaging as part of the fabrication process. It should also be noted that large curved surfaces developed by swaging are concentric with the surface. The postulated (100) surface of these crystals would be confirmed by a (100) cylindrical texture, as was observed in tungsten. The preservalion of the (100) cylindrical texture by swaging would maintain the <100> direction in the radial position required for easy flow. This might provide a partial explanation for the decreased rate of work hardening observed in the swaged wire. J. F. Peck and D. A. Thomas (authors&apos; reply) — The authors appreciate Dr. Leber&apos;s comments on the differences in textures, microstructures, and properties of swaged and drawn wires. The evidence of the prominence and persistence of the cylindrical texture in swaged bee wires seems quite consistent with our microstructural observations and interpretations. We are presently engaged in further work to correlate the development of texture and micro-structure in drawn bee metals.

For the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wet-table plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to re-treat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both byproduct coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to 100 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands I in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within +0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation&apos;s mines could not clean the he sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to o. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼-in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.
