SulphuR has long been one of the banes of the steel manufacturer and often no effort and expense have been spared in order to reduce it to a small per cent. in the finished product. This condition is due to a general conviction that in many cases where steels have failed in service, sulphur has been the cause. But there has been a growing feeling in recent years that the verdict against sulphur has been unnecessarily severe. In cases of segregation it was present in. augmented amounts along with other impurities, but it had not caused the segregation. High sulphur in pig iron is caused by poor furnace conditions and the sulphur is merely one indication of an iron that has not been properly reduced. No amount of subsequent treatment under oxidizing conditions in the open-hearth furnace can remedy the defects, although the per cent. of sulphur may be considerably reduced. In other words, the causes of bad steel can frequently be traced back to bad pig iron, and sulphur is merely one indication that the pig iron is bad. The writer recently visited a steel plant where a mass of evidence had been accumulated which substantiated this fact, and the superintendent was emphatic in stating that high sulphur was not harmful provided the steel was not otherwise poor due to insufficient reduction in the blast furnace. The presence of a moderate amount of sulphur is desirable from the standpoint of the man who machines the steel. The low-sulphur material drags and the production of a smooth surface is very difficult. A slight increase in sulphur enables the machinist to produce a smooth surface without difficulty. Since, therefore, such large quantities of steel are subjected to machining, it becomes highly important that the sulphur controversy should be settled, and if its presence is proved to be harmless the ban on it should be lifted. The gain boundary relaxation in high-purity aluminum, nickel, copper, and silver was studied by means of a low-frequency torsion pendulum. Both internal friction and creep at constant stress tests were conducted. A lognormal distribution in relaxation times was found to account for the relatively wide experimental internal friction peaks and the gradual relaxation behavior during the creep tests. This distribution was separated further into a lognormal distribution of relaxation time constants and a normal distribution in activation energies. A spread of up to ±6 kcal per mole in the activation energies accounted for the major part of the distribution. A "double-peak" internal friction phenomenon was observed in silver. The activation energies in kcal per mole derived from the grain boundary relaxation phenomena are 34.5 for aluminum, 73.5 for nickel, 31.5 for copper, and 41.5 for silver. It was found that the rain boundary relaxation strength in these metals increases with the reported stacking-fault energy. GRAIN boundary relaxation phenomena have been observed in a large number of polycrystalline metals and alloys. Numerous investigations have been conducted to study the structure of the grain boundary through this relaxation process. One of the first investigators was Ke1-4 who observed that the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation in aluminum, a brass, and a iron was about the same as that for volume diffusion. He concluded that the grain boundary behaved as if it were a thin liquid layer with neighboring grains sliding over one another. Leak5 conducted experiments on iron of a higher purity and observed that the grain boundary activation energy is comparable with that of grain boundary diffusion. He suggested that, in metals where this relationship holds, the damping may be caused by a reversible migration of grain boundaries into adjoining grains. Nowick6 has presented an interesting view of inter-facial relaxation with his "sphere of relaxation" model. A relaxed interface is represented as one where the shear stress is greater than the normal value along the edges and zero in the interior of the interface. The region of the stress relaxation is pictured as a sphere surrounding the interface. From his calculations Nowick concluded that the slip along an interface is directly proportional to its length. Therefore, the time of relaxation, T, depends on the size of the relaxation interface. This means that in the Arrhenius relationship, t = TO exp[H/RT], valid for atom movements, the relaxation time T is predicted to be proportional to the grain diameter through the pre-exponential term, TO. Since the internal friction can be given as Q-1 = ?j wt/(1 + w2r2), where ?J is the relaxation strength and w is the angular frequency, an increase in grain size at a constant frequency will shift the peak to a higher temperature. A great deal of work has been done to determine the exact relationship between the internal friction and grain size.1,5,7,8 In metals, the grain boundary peaks are found to be lower and broader than predicted theoretically.' The above model can explain this by a distribution in the size of the interface areas, represented by a distribution in the parameter tO, and an overlap of spheres of relaxation, represented by a distribution in activation energies. Both these phenomena result in an over-all distribution in the relaxation time, which could affect the internal friction peak height, breadth, and also position. This relationship between the experimental data and theoretical calculations appears very promising in the study of interfacial relaxation mechanisms. THEORY A lognormal distribution in t can sometimes be used to adequately describe the spectrum of relaxation times governing an anelastic relaxation. wiechert9 originally suggested such a distribution to explain the elastic after-effect in solids. This choice is particularly applicable to grain boundary relaxation when considering Saltykov's work.'' He found a lognormal distribution in the grain sizes within a metal. Recently Nowick and Berry11 have introduced a log-normal distribution in T into the theoretical internal friction equations. The form of the distribution function is where z = In(r/rm), and Tm is the mean value of t. The parameter ß is a measure of the distribution and is the half-width of the distribution when is l/e of its maximum, IC/(O). Nowick and Berry have described the methods to obtain the parameters Tm, ß, and ?,J from experimental internal friction and creep test data. In the idealized case, where only one relaxation event occurs with one relaxation time, only ?J and T are necessary to completely describe the event, and 0 = 0. For the broader internal friction curves 6 is some positive number greater than zero. The larger the 6, the greater is the half-width of the distribution in In t.

J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I have read Mr. Eames' excellent paper on this' subject with great interest, for besides being connected with the design and installation of the first modern countercurrent decantation plant, he was associated with me in the development of the thickener in the Black Hills some years earlier, and has now been operating the largest plant that has used this method of treatment. His, discussion, of the influence of different factors on the results obtained is quite thorough, but several features I think may not be apparent to the reader who has not studied the subject carefully. 1. Grade of Ore That Can Be Treated.-Mr. Eames has shown graphically that' the assay of all solutions increases directly as the grade of the ore treated. He has not emphasized, however, the fact that, as most operators prefer to keep the assay of pregnant solutions down below a certain figure in order to insure complete precipitation, an increase in ore value beyond a certain point means a proportional increase in solution precipitated and therefore not only an increase in the percentage of dissolved gold recovered, but an actual descrease in tailing loss. The importance of the influence of the percentage of moisture in the underflow on loss is made clear, and I. may add that unless it is quite evident that pulp can be safely settled to 50 per cent. solids, or more, it is usually advisable to use a continuous filter at the end of. a decantation plant to reduce losses in cyanide and gold. Dissolution in Thickeners.-The influence of a change of solution on silver dissolution has long been emphasized and most gold operators have. recognized the annoying way in which a gold ore after being agitated until nothing more can be dissolved will loosen up again when almost ready for the dump after the dissolved metal has been removed by decantation or filtration. Continuous decantation gives favorable conditions for this additional dissolution and a chance to recover most of what is thus dissolved. This is especially true if an extra tank is used in the series and barren solution added at the second tank from the end instead, of the first, as shown in Mr. Eames' Fig. 1. It can be calculated that the use of this tank will reduce the mechanical loss of cyanide by one-third and cut the gold loss as well; but the saving in gold or silver that may dissolve when the pulp is first diluted with weak solution may be as important.

TWINNING has long been recognized as a possible mode of deformation in crystalline solids and has been studied in a wide variety of crystals.&apos; Recently, deformation markings which have the topographical characteristics of twins have been seen in tungsten" and the body-centered cubic alloys of tungsten and molybdenum with rhenium.3-7 These markings have been identified as twins because: 1) they are visible after polishing and etching;2,3 2) their formation is accompanied by an audible click and a drop in load;4 and 3) the habit plane is {112}, the plane which has been identified as the twinning plane for several body-centered cubic metals.&apos; However, there has been no published evidence for the specific determination of the twinning direction in rhenium alloys of tungsten and molybdenum, because usually the deformation twins were not broad enough to be detected with a conventional X-ray beam. Consequently, [111] is inferred as the twinning direction since the latter must lie in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the twinning plane (112). As Sims and Jaffee3 and Lawley and Maddin4 have shown, the addition of rhenium to molybdenum and tungsten increases the ductility of the alloy over that of the pure metal, but twinning is much more profuse in these alloys than in the pure elements, particularly at Mo-35 pct Re*and W-30 pct Re. Since twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron8 and the silicon-irons,9 direct experimental proof that the deformation markings in tungsten and molybdenum alloys of rhenium are twins seemed to be needed. Using the Laue back-reflection technique, the deformation markings in a Mo-35 pct Re alloy are shown to be deformation twins. The twins have a (112) habit plane and the twinning direction is <111>. The Mo-35 pct Re specimen used was taken from a 0.060-in. zone-refined single crystal deformed 6 pct in tension at 78°K. The Laue back-reflection technique, with a film to specimen distance of 2 cm, and white radiation from a copper target were used.

EARLY in 1917, it became evident, owing to existing and pending market conditions, that a substitute for crude petroleum must be found for firing the smelter furnaces. After a review of the plants then existing, it was deemed advisable to depart from their practice and to adopt the following described system of distributing pulverized coal to the furnaces. The principal advantages of the proposed system, which influenced this decision, were: (1) Equal safety; no pulverized coal is stored at the furnaces; (2) greater ease of operation, furnace fires being controlled by regulating valves in burner branches, as in gas firing; (3) better organization; all machinery, including pulverized coal feed, is under one roof, and the organization is separate from the furnace department; (4) greater cleanliness; all machinery is under vacuum; (5) greater flexibility of application; the coal and air mixture can be piped where needed. The design of the plant is the result of the combined efforts of the local engineering staff and of the machinery manufacturers. Many new features were embodied in this design to insure greater safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of handling. After 14 months of continuous operation, the plant has proved entirely satisfactory. The building is of structural steel, covered with corrugated steel, with many windows and is painted light gray inside and out. The building floor is of concrete with ample drains to the sewer, and the building is equipped with fire and service water piping. Fig. 1 shows the east side of the building and the incline conveyor from the raw-coal bins.

THE Mascot mines of the American Zinc. Co. of Tennessee are situated at Mascot, Tenn., 14 miles northeast of Knoxville, on the Southern Railway. The district is centrally located in the Great Valley, or Appalachian Valley Province. Prior to 1900, a small output of zinc was obtained from oxidized ore mined in open pits. In 1900, a shaft was sunk to sulfide ore, and in 1903, a second shaft was put down, neither being as deep as 200 ft. The American Zinc Co. of Tennessee began drilling in 1911, and outlined an ore body to which its No. 1 shaft was sunk, to a depth of 365 ft. Since that time, the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee has been the only operator in. the district. The Federal mining laws have never been in operation in Tennessee and mining lands are as irregular in boundary and area as farm lands. Ownerships are generally held in fee. In most cases the surface and mineral rights, are transferred together. Electric power is supplied at 66,000 volts by the Tennessee Power do, from a hydro-electric plant at Parksville, Polk County, Tenn., 100 miles from Mascot. No other power is used, but an emergency steam plant is held ready in case of interruption of service. Labor is all native and non-union. Negroes are employed for most of the shoveling, and for a few miscellaneous jobs, but for almost, no other work.

Iron containing 0.1 pct A1 and -0.9 pct P by weight was internally oxidized in the temperature range 900° to 1300° C, where the bcc structure is stabilized by phosphorous. By measuring the depth of penetration of oxygen with time in an internally oxidized zone for an imposed surface oxygen potential, oxygen permeability was determined. The dgfusion coefficient of oxygen in iron was then calculated using known solubility data, yielding the expression: where Do is the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in bcc iron in sq cm per sec and T is temperature in OK. RECENTLY Hepworth, Smith, and Turkdoganl measured the diffusivity of oxygen in bcc iron and reported the temperature dependence of diffusivity from data determined in the a, and 6 temperature ranges. Subsequently Swisher and Turkdogan&apos; have measured the diffusivity of oxygen in fcc iron. Internal oxidation techniques were employed by these investigators and in this current study. The analysis of this technique is developed by wagner3 (presented in English by Hauffe4 and Rapp 5). In this present study bcc iron stabilized by phosphorous was used to determine oxygen diffusivity in the temperature range 900° to 1300°C. Meijerin 6 has studied oxygen permeability in this temperature range using bcc iron stabilized with 5 pct Sn. Other inves- tigators who have studied oxygen permeability in bcc iron at other temperatures are Schenck et al., 7 Bohen-kamp and Engell, 8 and Bradford. EXPERIMENTAL Electrolytic iron of 99.99 pct purity was alloyed to contain 0.897 pct P and 0.093 pct Al. The maximum weight percent phosphorous required to stabilize bcc iron between 910" and 1392°C is 0.51 pct as determined by Haughton,10 0.42 pct by Roquet and jegaden," and 0.58 pct by vogel,12 with the latter value preferred by Hansen.13 Microprobe analysis indicated that there was no segregation of the phosphorous either before or after permeability studies; therefore, the quantity of phosphorous added was assumed to be sufficient to stabilize the bcc structure. Furthermore, the permeability results of studies on this alloy agreed substantially with interpolated values from previous data on bcc iron.&apos; An ingot of the Fe-P-A1 alloy was hot-rolled to a l-in.-thick slab. Specimens were machined to dimensions: 13/8 by $ by 1/4 in. The experimental apparatus and procedure used have been described before.&apos; A constant oxygen potential was established by passing argon and hydrogen through a column of oxalic acid dihydrate, which has a water vapor pressure which is well-known as a function of temperature. Slab specimens were exposed to a gas mixture sufficiently lean in oxygen to prevent the formation of a surface oxide for predetermined temperature for selected times. The specimens were then quenched, sectioned, and examined metallo-graphically. All quenched specimens were iron-plated to provide protection from the outside sample edge during polishing. Fig. 1 shows a typical microstruc-ture for a specimen oxidized at 953°C for 48.00 hr at a water vapor-to-hydrogen pressure ratio of 0.20. Although the season cracking of brass has been a subject of experimental investigation for more than thirty years, the mechanism that is responsible for this phenomenon is still obscure. While at- tempts to elucidate the stress-corrosion cracking of some alloys have been relatively successful, the principal accomplishments made in the studies of the season cracking of brass have consisted of improved techniques for the fabrication of articles of alpha brass, which reduce the danger of season-cracking failure in service. The primary purpose of the present paper is to collect the published experimental data which appear to be of importance to the development of an adequate theory of the mechanism of the season cracking of brass. Some of the possible mechanisms which have been proposed will also be discussed, together with some promising avenues of future attack on the problems. Several excellent survey papers on season cracking are available, including the recent ones by Croft and Sachs(1)2 and by Gibbs(2). The principal facts concerning season cracking, as presented in these papers, may be summarized as follows. The season cracking of alpha brass is a special type of stress-corrosion failure, which may occur in atmospheres containing ammonia, air, and water vapor. A new type water shut-off for use in air drilling has been developed. The method has been 99 to 100 per rent effective in several different formations of inter-ranular-type porosity. Since costs for materials, time and equipment used are relatively small, the process should extend economies of air drilling to many new areas. The treatment involves a new technique for forming a water-inroluble precipitate within the pores of a rock. Advantage it taken of the difference in mobility of a liquid and a gas in porous media to achieve the greatest volume of precipitate in a given pore. Reactants selected for the laboratory (2nd field tests were aluminum sulfate solution and gaseous ammonia. This process has been tested in both intergranular and fractured-type porosities. It has consistently shut-of between 99 and 100 per cent of the water flowing from formations having intergranular-type porosity and perrlreuhilities ranging from a few millidarcise to over a darcy The treatment is not particularly suitable for shutting-off water from fractured formations although plugging of the order of 50 per cent or greater has been achieved in all such applications. Among advantages of the treatment are: (I) no reaction waiting rime after a relatively short placement time, (2) a low mate-rials cost of about $3/f1 of hole treated, (3) use of common service-type equipment for treatment, and (4) no unusual requirements for mixing and placement. INTRODUCTION In rotary drilling with air or gas it has been possible to increase bit life by tenfold and more than double rate of penetration over corresponding performance when drilling with mud. These factors have amounted to as much as 22 per cent savings on total cost of drilling a well. However, these advantages are rapidly lost when water is encountered in an air- or gas-drilled well because water interferes with the removal of cuttings from the hole and also gives rise to other difficulties. In attempting to combat water troubles, operators have commonly resorted to such measures as mist drilling, treatment with cement or chemicals, converting to conventional mud drilling, or setting casing. In many cases these measures have either been costly or ineffective. In an effort to overcome this problem, studies were undertaken to develop an effective and economical water shut-off technique for use in formations possessing inter-granular-type porosity. Extensive laboratory experimentation finally led to a unique method for producing a water-insoluble precipitate within the pores of a sandstone. The unique part of the treatment is use of a liquid and a gas to form the precipitate, and in this case the reactants used were aluminum sulfate solution and gaseous ammonia. The reaction between these two materials is shown in the following equation. Al2 (SO1)3 - 18 H20 6NH2? saturated Water- Solution Cat 2A1(OH)3 . n H20 3(NH4)2SO • n H20 Solid Solid That is, a solid precipitate consisting of aluminum hydroxide and ammonium sulfate is formed when ammonia reacts with aqueous aluminum sulfate. The aluminum hydroxide is insoluble in water and the ammonium sulfate, though soluble, can only be removed from the formation pores by diffusion—an extremely slow process. Although the precipitate formed by the reaction is not particularly firm, great strength is not needed for a precipitate to bridge and plug intergran-ular-type porosity. Summarising a conference is never an easy task, but I will try to keep my comments brief and to the point. There are a number of lessons which we have learned from our deliberations together during these past three days, and I will try to give you my impressions of these lessons and of their practical implications in open pit mining. The first thing that has become increasingly obvious during these discussions is that it is no longer acceptable to offer an &apos;Act of God&apos; as an excuse for a major slope or tailings dam failure. Disasters such as that at Aberfan in the United Kingdom have focussed the world&apos;s attention on the activities of the mining industry and the report of the commission set up to investigate the Aberfan disaster clearly showed that adequate knowledge was available and that failure to apply this knowledge did not qualify as an &apos;Act of God&apos;. The courts and the world&apos;s press are certain to impose increasingly harsher penalties and criticism on those held responsible for major failures, particularly of tailings dams, in the future. One of the major problems in applying available knowledge to slope problems is that attempts to apply this knowledge are frequently left too late. To provide an engineering solution in the case of a slope in an advanced state of failure is an almost impossible task, and it is essential that those responsible for the stability of a slope must learn to recognise signs of distress at an early enough stage for effective remedial measures to be taken. As our ability to solve slope problems improves, the time at which slope stability problems are considered in a mining project must move forward to a stage at which these problems can be anticipated and dealt with before they arise. Conferences such as this are important in that they enable us to exchange ideas and advance our knowledge to a level at which such predictive engineering will be possible. It has been encouraging to hear of mining projects such as the Bougainville Copper operation where slope stability studies were carried out as part of the overall evaluation programme and it is hoped that this will become a more common procedure in the future. Providing a safe slope in an opencast mine obviously costs money, either in terms of the reduced ore to waste ratio given by flat slopes or because of the cost of stabilization techniques such as drainage or the use of rock anchors. An optimum slope design will provide maximum safety at minimum cost but achieving this optimum is not an easy task. Any one of us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. On the other hand, if the overall economics of a mining project are so critical as to require slope angles which the engineer responsible for these slopes considers to be unsafe, it is his duty to make us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. This paper outlines the economic considerations that led to the recent installation of a thickener at St. Joseph LeadCo.&apos;s Balmat, N.Y. mill. To incorporate storage of concentrates, they decided upon a single, unusually deep tank to be used for both storage and thickening. The abnormally high rake lift required was achieved by the novel feature of having the entire drive platform raise and lower. Initial operating problems are described along with the satisfactory solutions. Total costs for concentrate handling before and after installation of the storage thickeners are compared. In Northern New York State, the St. Joseph Lead Co. conducts a 2100 tpd zinc mining and milling operation at its Balmat Plant. Conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation is used to produce a zinc concentrate. For 32 years, from 1930 through 1962, the plant operated with the concentrates going directly from flotation to the filtering, drying, and loading facilities. All of the concentrate handling equipment, therefore, had to operate 24 hrs per day. It also had to accommodate wide fluctuations in tonnage, due to variations in the grade of ore. Many problems were thereby encountered in filtering and drying, but it was never concluded that the cost could be justified for installing a conventional, large diameter thickener. Finally, in 1963, they installed an unconventional thickener that is unusual in several respects. The tank depth is 16 ft instead of the normal 8 ft. The rakes are raised and lowered by having the main drive gear located on a movable platform. Automatic controls are programmed to raise the drive platform and rakes during one shift of storage. During the next two shifts of withdrawal, the controls are programmed to lower the drive platform and rakes. After three years of operating this unique storage-thickener, the conclusion is that a correct choice was made from several alternative schemes for storing concentrates. The various considerations involved in the final selection will here be analyzed, and the design features and installation details will be de- scribed. Operating problems and modifications made to the equipment will next be considered, and finally the effects upon filtering, drying, and loading will be reported. SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS Even without a thickener, concentrate handling had become reasonably efficient at the Balmat Mill by the year 1962. A tonnage that varied between 6 and 25 tph was being handled fairly satisfactorily. The filter cake moisture of 8%% seemed quite respectable, except that two large filters were usually in service. Three filters often had to be operated in order to prevent excessive filter overflow with consequent loss of values. This situation occurred when zinc concentrates from flotation exceeded 20 tph and when filter cloth blinding developed. Over the years, numerous small improvements had been effected, such as: selection of a filter cloth with better flow characteristics; addition of flocculant to the filter feed; and, in 1953, the smallest of three drum filters was replaced by a five disc, 8&apos; 10" diam filter with a bottom agitator and snap blow. As another example of fairly efficient operation, the oil-fired dryer was doing a seemingly satisfactory job of further reducing the moisture content to an average of 3%. However, there were often considerable dust losses when the tonnage suddenly dropped off to 6 tph. At high tonnage rates, the resulting high moistures of 4% and 5% caused difficulties due to concentrates sticking and freezing in chutes leading to the box car loaders. (Drying of concentrates is justified because of the high freight rate for the long shipping distance to the company owned smelter at Josephtown, Pa. near Pittsburgh.) It was long realized that installation of a thickener would permit the subsequent steps of concentrate handling to proceed more smoothly and would alleviate the problems existing in the filtering, drying, and loading operations. It was also realized that even a slightly lower filter cake moisture could mean considerable savings in fuel oil. However, all these factors were never quite sufficient to warrant the expense of a thickener until three more considerations were added to the picture. First, the advent of flocculants meant that a thickener of relatively small area could now be considered. Secondly, a complete renovation of the zinc flotation circuit was made between 1957 and 1961. The Republic of Colombia is the northernmost country of South America. Its northern coast line exteilds from the frontier of Costa Rica to that of Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea. On the west it fronts on the Pacific Ocean, along the Panama Isthmus, and down to Ecuador. It is bounded on the south by Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, which latter country with Venezuela form its boundaries on the east. Its area exceeds 500,000 square miles. It is deemed unnecessary to give here a map of the country. Fig. 1, a map of the department of Antioquia, studied in connection with a good modern general map of Colombia, will explain itself. Fig. 1 contains also some of the region of the Cauca valley, described in this paper. Access.—The interior of Colombia is reached through the ports of Sabanilla and Cartagena on the Caribbean Sea, each of which places is connected with the Magdalena river by a short narrow-gauge railroad, running respectively to Barranquilla and Calamar. From these points lines of river-steamers serve the ports of the upper Magdalena, which they reach in journeys of a week to ten days. After leaving the steamer, a short railroad journey, followed by a long and tedious mule-ride, reaches the cities of Bogota and Medellin. Quibdo, at the head of the navigation of the Atrato, and its most important town, is connected by steamer-service with Cartagena, by canoe-routes with the various districts of the Choco, and by mule-road, at present well-nigh impassable, with the heart of Antioquia. On the western coast the port of Tumaco is a starting-point for canoe- and mule-travel to the southern part of the department of Cauca, while Buenaventura is the port of the central section of the valley of the Cauca,

Claims of 16 gold mining companies seeking damages from L-208 will be heard in Court of Claims starting Jan. 26. Earlier this year, judges ruled that 3 gold mining companies could sue for damages from the wartime order closing their mines. Congress later waived the statute of limitations thus permitting other gold miners to get in their claims. Despite power shortages third quarter production of aluminum exceeded that of the previous period by 2.2 pct. However, September production was 16 million lb less than in August. Hewitt-Robbins, Inc. dedicated a new $1 million addition to the company&apos;s Buffalo, N. Y. belt conveyor plant. New equipment, including a $220,000 press, will make belts up to 70 in, wide, compared with the former limit of 60 in. Charges of a tin cartel in Malaya are not backed up in the latest U. S. Government report according to the Malayan Tin Bureau. The U. S. mission reported that it "did not discover any evidence of curtailment of tin output by the mining and smelting industries." It noted that guerilla activity had halted exploration and expansion attempts by producers.

(communication to the Secretary*): The Taviche mining-district is generally known as " Taviches," being named from the two villages called respectively San Pedro Taviche and San Jero-nimo Taviche. It is so called by Jose G. Aguilera, in his paper on the Geographical and Geological Distribution of the Mineral Deposits of Mexico;&apos; and in published reports by the late N. W. Rudston Read ;2 and by Juan de Dios Villarello3 The region is a large one, measuring about 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. Dr. Chance, in his interesting paper, tells us very little about the nature of the ores, and, with regard to the geology of the district, contents himself with observing that " the country, as a rule, consists of eruptive rocks; and no evidences of sedimentary strata appear near the mines." DIFFUSION coefficients of RaD (PD) and RaE (Bi) in a Bi-0.255 atomic pct Pb alloy have been measured by the methods outlined in a previous paper.&apos; The following changes were made in the experimental procedures: the bath was made up of about 400 to 500 g Bi; and no correction was made for the volume change of bismuth on melting. The data are presented in Table I and Fig. 1. A least-squares analysis of the data yielded D = (0.120 t 0.09) exp ( -9680 + 1070/RT) D- (0.0465 0.001) exp (-8100 + 466/RT). Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the activation energies are significantly different at the 50 pct level, but not at the 75 pct level, while the D values are significantly different at the 97.5 pct level, but not at the 99 pct level. The differences are thus not as clear-cut as they were for lead. However, bismuth diffuses faster than lead in high bismuth alloys as well as in lead. The high activation energies, more than twice the value calculated from viscosities, are in good agreement with the results of Grace and Derge.&apos; No data were obtained at higher temperatures because of gas bubble formation in the capillary. INTRODUCTION The King and Beaver mines of Asbestos Corporation Limited (ACL) were joined in 1957 to form the King-Beaver mine. In 1964, ACL purchased the Johnson&apos;s Asbestos Company. The combined underground workings are a part of the King- Beaver mine. Asbestos ore is mined at the rate of 4080 metric tons per day (mtpd) to provide 15% of the company&apos;s daily requirement in the Thetford Mines area. Figure 1 shows the location of Thetford Mines. Two shafts service the underground. No. 3 shaft, 457 m deep, is used for personnel and material transportation, downcast ventilation, and ore hoisting. No. 4 shaft, 820 m to the south, is 389 m deep. It is used for material transportation and upcast ventilation. Figure 2 shows the relative locations of the shafts and the underground workings. The ore is mined by block caving. HISTORY The orebody outcropped at surface and was first mined as an open pit. Underground mining commenced when open pit mining became impractical. Shrinkage stoping, used initially, was unsatisfactory in the highly fractured ore. Sublevel stoping improved ore recovery and safety, but did not overcome the adverse effects of the un- stable rock. Observations of the rock failures indicated that block caving would be satisfactory. This was confirmed by careful investigation and testing. A method of block caving similar to that used at the Miami Copper Company was adopted. The first block commenced production in June 1933. BLOCK CAVING General A large block of ore is undercut above pre- pared drawpoints. The ore above the undercut caves by its own weight. Caving progresses up- ward as the caved ore is drawn. A large proportion of the rock breaks up in the caving action so that it will pass through the drawpoints. Oversize blocks are broken by drilling and blasting or mudcapping. Figure 3 shows the progressive stages of block caving. In the central part of the ore zone, the vertical dimension of a block is determined by the 132 metres between production levels. When isolated ore pockets are developed, the vertical dimensions of a block depend on the extension of the ore zone above the undercut. The minimum horizontal dimension of an under- cut determines the cavability of the overlying block. When necessary, caving is assisted by drilling long horizontal holes into the block above the undercut and blasting them. This procedure speeds up or restarts caving. It will not ensure complete caving of blocks having undercuts less than 30 m wide. Orebodies suitable for block caving are highly fractured and wide enough to cave freely without excessive dilution. The object of the experiments reported in this paper is to determine the eutectic composition of copper and tin and to determine the location of the part of the liquidus line immediately above the eutectic composition in copper. Three methods were used in the investigation: (1) the method of dissolving copper in a bath of molten tin at constant temperature, with the idea that when the bath was saturated with copper its copper content, by analysis, together with the temperature at which the saturation took place would locate a point on the liquidus line; (2) the method of the differential cooling curves, and (3) the method of microscopic examination. This paper is principally concerned with the results of the last two methods mentioned. The results of the first method, that of dissolving copper in molten tin, did not agree with the results of Miller,&apos; by the same method, nor with the results of other investigators by other methods, nor yet with the results of the cooling-curve experiments and microscopic examination reported here. Solution of Copper in Molten Tin To determine the amount of copper that would be dissolved by molten tin at a given constant temperature the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was used. It consists of a cast-iron pot a, 6 in. deep and 8 in. dia., well cleaned inside and dressed with graphite. This pot, which holds 15 lb. of tin, g, rests on a hot plate b with resistance winding c. The thermocouple d leads to a Wilson-Maeulen temperature regulator for maintaining the temperahre at the heating coils at a fixed temperature to within ±5°C. There is a shallow bath of solder e on the top of the hot plate to improve the thermal contact between the plate and the pot. An insulating jacket f of asbestos prevents the irregular radiation of heat from the apparatus. The copper stirrer h slowly rotates in, and is dissolved by the bath of molten tin g. This bath is protected from excessive oxidation by a layer of charcoal j. The stirrer h is fixed to the lower end of the iron tube k, which is so mounted that it can be driven by a motor with reducing gear. The temperature of the bath is indicated
