Anders Richard Akerman entered the eternal rest on Feb. 23, 1922, after a long and distinguished career. All mining men in Sweden arc mourning him, because he was one of their greatest and a leader in the scientific metallurgy of the iron. He was born April 18, 1837, in Stockholm, where his father, Joachim Akerman, was a professor at the Technical University, but the greater part of his childhood was spent in Falun, where the family moved after his father was made principal of the mining academy. He was at first taught by a tutor, but in 1851 entered the high school in Vesteras and the University of Uppsala in 1855, from which he graduated as a mining engineer on Dec. 11, 1860. A week later, he entered the service of the Department of Commerce and entered the mining academy at Falun, from which he graduated Dec. 15, 1862. The following May, he was accepted as a student in the metallurgical section of "Jernkontoret" (the "Iron Institute") and on Oct. 22, 1864, he was made an assistant in the same section. Thus begun the cooperation with the Iron Institute which was to continue for so many years and to bear such rich fruit. He had, however, previously received two requests from the Iron Institute: One to assist Prof. V. Eggertz in the preliminary work of preparing a handbook on blast-furnace practice, the other to make a complete index of the proceedings of the Iron Institute ("Jernkontorets Annaler") volumes 1817-1864, which index was published in 1866. On Oct. 19, 1865, Akerman was requested by "Jernkontoret" to give during 1866, lectures in the metallurgy of iron at the mining academy of Falun, as Prof. V. Eggertz wished to devote his entire time to the study of assaying. This request was renewed Oct. 15, 1867, for the year 1868, and on April 17, 1869, he was made instructor in metallurgy and mining at the Technical University, to which institution the higher education in mining engineering was transferred at that time. Akerman thus entered his career as a teacher, which lasted until the end of 1891. On May 11, 1877, he was appointed assistant professor in metallurgy and mining; on Sept. 7, 1883, he was appointed acting professor in the same department; and two weeks later was appointed dean of the mining college. On May 21, 1874, he was instructed by the Crown to inspect the mining schools in Filipstad and Falun. As a teacher, Akerman was very popular and his lectures were excellent, in form as well

A generalized mathematical model is presented, which describes the thermal recovery of oil in linear systems with convective external heat loss. Three-phase fluid flow, conduction-convection heat transfer, chemical reaction between oxygen and oil and aqueous phase change are included, making the model applicable to a variety of thermal recovery processes. The complexity of the model requires that numerical solutions be obtained with a digital computer. The numerical approximations of the partial differential equations are presented and the algorithm is discussed in detail. The analysis is applied to the detailed simulation of a forward-combustion laboratory tube experiment. The results of the simulation exhibit with reasonable accuracy all of the principal thermal and bydrodynamic characteristics observed in the laboratory (i.e., the propagation of a combustion zone, a steam plateau, and oil and water banks). Numerical variations in the parameters appearing in the external heat-loss term, the aqueous phase-change term, and the Arrhenius combustion term are examined, and their effects on the predicted temperature profiles, oil and water production histories, and the air-oil ratio are presented. In spite of an oversimplification in the chemical reaction mechanism and the considerable computer time required to obtain solutions, the model represents a major advance in the ability to simulate the phenomena observed in thermal recovery experiments. INTRODUCTION Thermal oil recovery refers to a class of recovery processes where heat is supplied to a reservoir to provide the necessary expulsive energy. This thermal energy can be supplied externally as steam or hot water, or it can be generated in situ by forward or reverse combustion. In either case, however, thermal recovery processes are charac- terized by the simultaneous flow of two or three fluid phases in a variable - temperature field, accompanied by possible chemical reaction or phase-change effects.2-5, 7- 10, 14,16-18,20-22 Although a physical understanding of the thermal recovery processes is far from complete, it is possible to construct mathematical models which describe approximately all of the principal physical and chemical phenomena. However, attempts to solve such models, even with high-speed computers, involve formidable mathematical difficulties. Consequently, theoretical solutions have been obtained only for idealized cases in which important physical phenomena are neglected. For example, consider the process of forward in situ combustion. All such theories which have been developed consider only certain aspects of the process, such as heat transfer, 2-4,8,9,l6,l8 heat transfer with phase change,10 heat transfer with chemical reaction,7 or the hydrodynamics of three-phase flow.21 A general theory including all of the above phenomena has not been developed to date. This paper presents a unified theory of thermal recovery processes in linear systems. A mathematical model is developed which explicitly includes conduction-convection heat transfer with convective external heat loss, chemical reaction between air and oil, aqueous phase change, and the hydrodynamics of three-phase flow. A system of equations is developed which can be solved numerically on a high-speed digital computer, resulting in predicted temperature, pressure, and saturation histories in space and time. The model allows a more detailed simulation of thermal recovery tube experiments than had previously been possible. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Consider the linear flow of gas, water and oil in a homogeneous porous medium. Assume that the oil will react with gaseous oxygen, and that mass is transferred between the water and gas phase by evaporation or condensation. IN October, 1926, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. began the operation of its new leaching plant, which has a capacity to handle 8600 dry tons of ore daily and produce therefrom approximately 160,000 lb. of electrolytic copper per day. (See Fig. 1.) THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.

James W. Neill, Pasadena, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*):—Professor Hofnlan's paper brings the art up to date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there mas at the concentrator an unusually large protluction of a middle product, locally called " iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a " roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the uslial construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollon- cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it tlush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuybres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a Can-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow. The fine material which had renlained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. The fire would then be covered with fresh material and

High carbon, low phosphorus steel can now be made from pig iron containing 0.7 pct P or more, in a commercial sized open hearth furnace. No external heat is required for refining, and steel produced is identical with basic open hearth steel. THE classical Thomas process, which requires liquid pig iron containing over 11/2 pct P, yields a product relatively high in phosphorzs and nitrogen. Unless large quantities of recarburizers are added to the refined steel, the product is low in carbon content. Thus, the Thomas process is not well suited to American raw materials, and its product is often not acceptable according to the standards set by American industry. The shortcomings of the Thomas process have long been recognized; with the advent of low cost oxygen, studies were initiated to develop pneumatic processes which would conceivably overcome the inherent objections to Thomas steelmaking. Several such modified basic pneumatic processes have been tested experimentally in commercial trials during the past decade. Probably the most widely publicized of these developments has been the oxygen converter process as practiced in Austrial,2 and in Canada.8 n this process, oxygen is substituted for air and introduced above the liquid bath in order to increase the heat available to the metallurgical system. This avoids the need for high phosphorus raw materials and gives a product low in nitrogen. In this process, the phosphorus content in the final product depends, to a considerable extent, on the total amount of that element in the burden. The rotary furnace4 which is now in commercial operation at Domnarvet Steelworks, Sweden, is producing low phosphorus steel from iron containing 1.8 to 2 pct P. One or more early slags are removed and by this means high carbon steels of open hearth quality can be produced. At this stage of development there is some question as to the applicability of the rotary process to large heats. Another development has been the use of oxygen in combination with either steam6 or carbon dioxide yn the basic bessemer, thus avoiding the introduction of nitrogen gas into the refining system and giving a product relatively low in nitrogen content. A double slag process has been used in Europe7 in conjunction with a regular Thomas converter, by means of which it is possible to obtain a phosphorus content in the product approaching that obtained in basic open hearth steels. The Turbo-Hearth process:' which uses the side blowing principle so as to produce low nitrogen steel from normal American pig irons, has been developed experimentally in this country. A process fitted to U. S. raw materials All of the preceding processes, with the exception of the rotary furnace, suffer from the common shortcoming that they cannot be adapted to the production of high-carbon, low-phosphorus steels unless large proportions of recarburizers are added. In 1947, a program was initiated by the Inland Steel Company1' to study an oxygen steelmaking process specifically designed to utilize the full range of phosphorus analyses encountered in American pig irons and to give finai products with phosphorus and nitrogen contents comparable to steel produced by the basic open hearth process. The area on which oil and gas development is reported covers 30 counties, which are included in the Texas Railroad Commission's District No. I. This area not only includes the old established Balcones fault-line group of producing fields but also includes the southwest extension of this trend and some of the deeper Wilcox (Eocene) exploratory development. (Fig. J.) In the old Balcones fault-line zone, three new fields were discovered during 1941. These fields are comparatively small, producing from Dale limestone or Austin chalk. No new fields were discovered during the year in the Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone horizon. One new shallow field was discovered in the Reklaw (Eocene) sand horizon and, in the southwestern part of the district, one oil field and one gas field were discovered in the Navarro (Upper Cretaceous) sand horizon. An extremely important extension was made to the one producing Wilcox (Eocene) field of the district in the Washburn Ranch field of La Salle County. The district produced 6,650,357 bbl. during 1941, which was a 12 per cent decrease under production for 1940. Approximately 4,954,000 bbl. of this total production was produced by the three Edwards limestone fields, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, the remaining production coming from the other 43 active fields in the district. In all, 3694 wells were producing at the end of 1941, compared with 3559 wells at the end of the previous year. During the year, 139 new producing wells were completed and 29 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. The increase in producing wells represents an increase in new wells over abandonments in these fields, together with a decrease in wells temporarily shut down as of the end of 1941. The majority of production drilling was carried on in the following fields; Bee Creek, Chicon Lake, Elm Creek, Gas Ridge, Pearsall and Tenney Creek. Approximately 250 wells were drilled during 1941, of which 110 were exploratory wells completed as failures throughout the district. Considerable exploratory work was continued during 1941 along the Wilcox trend. Geophysical work employing various types of geophysical methods and leasing activity was continued along this trend, particularly by the major companies. The significance of this activity is apparent from the successful extension and development in the Washburn field of La Salle County, where several well-developed gas-and-oil producing horizons have been developed in the lower Wilcox section between 5100 and 5600 ft. as noted in the following paragraphs. Continued exploratory activity along this general trend as far as present conditions will permit is predicted for 1942. THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

MECHANIZATION is being developed to some extent in every coal field in the United States and it is rather difficult to say which State or section of the country has made the greatest advancement. Statistics now being compiled for 1928 will show the tonnage mined, the amount of equipment used in each of the coal-producing States, and the comparative tonnages and percentages of total tonnage mined in each of these States, and will reveal which field is making the greatest advancement as far as quantity of production is concerned. However, while the tonnage figures are of great importance there-are other phases of coal-mine mechanization, such as the types of equipment, the mining methods and coal bed conditions, which are of equal interest. The change from hand-mining practices in all of the various operations from the face to the railroad cars is, perhaps, more indicative than any other one thing of the real progress being made.

The object of this graphic method is to estimate the weight of the casting, which is to be made from a given pattern, when the cross-section is not a uniform geometrical figure. Such an estimate is a very important guide to the foundryman, who would otherwise guess at the probable weight of a casting of new design, and, in trying to be on the safe side, would probably melt an unnecessary amount of iron. It is also an aid to the designer of a new car-wheel pattern, who must otherwise estimate from general experience the probable weight, have test-wheels made, and correct the pattern afterwards, so as to obtain the weight prescribed. For the method here described, an accurate drawing of the pattern is employed. This gives a closer result than a drawing of the wheel itself, for the following reasons: 1. Calculations based upon the actual dimensions of the wheel involve the erroneous assumption that the specific gravity of the casting is uniform throughout; and upon that basis the calculated weight would be wrong, because the amount of metal poured has shrunk in the mould, acquiring the highest density in the outside chilled portion, and growing less dense through the mottled to the gray portions. 2. Calculations based upon the dimensions of the pattern or " chiller " assume that the cooled metal will not have shrunk, but will have the volume of the pattern and a uniform density. These assumptions, though erroneous, counterbalance each other. For instance, the patterns and the chiller which give a wheel 33 in. in diameter when cold, are respectively 33.5 in. in diameter. This shows a shrinkage for wheel-iron of about & in. (ordinary gray pig is commonly assumed to shrink about 1/8 in.) per foot. Wheels cast in 33.5-in. chillers do not always have the

THE only previous investigation of the phase equilibria in the Ta-Pd system was reported by Greenfield and Beck.1 Their work (actually a portion of a much broader survey) was limited to the composition range 50 to 75 at. pct Ta and to a single temperature, 1000°C. The results indicated that no intermediate phases were present at this temperature. They pointed out that this was an unexpected result in view of the fact that niobium, which belongs to the same group in the periodic table as tantalum and has essentially the same atomic size, forms a o phase with palladium.' Also, tantalum in combination with rhodium,' iridium,' or platinum' stabilizes the s phase. By analogy, the Ta-Pd system would also be expected to contain a s phase. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to explore more fully the phase relationships in this system. Alloys were prepared by arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth in an argon-helium atmosphere. The purity of the starting materials was greater than 99.9 pct. The weight losses on melting were less than 1 pct and therefore the alloys were not analyzed chemically. Specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil, encapsulated in quartz capsules under a vacuum of at least 1 x 10-5 mm of Hg, annealed as indicated in Table I, and water quenched. Optical and X-ray metallography were used for identifying the phases present in the annealed and quenched alloys. The alloys were resistant to attack by several acids; however, a sodium cyanide electroetch and an immersion etch containing 1 part HF, 1 part HNO3, 2 parts H2SO4, and 5 parts H2O by volume were found satisfactory. The X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera and filtered copper or chromium radiation. A summary of the phases found in this investigation is presented in Table I. No attempt was made to determine the composition limits of the various phases. The present results indicate that this system consists of two terminal solid solutions separated by at least four intermediate phases at the approximate compositions Ta3Pd, -TaPd, TaPd,, and TaPd3. The Ta-rich solid solution, containing less than 10 at. pct Pd at 1150°C, is in equilibrium with a o phase which is stable in the vicinity of 25 at. pct Pd. The latter phase is also in equilibrium with a bct phase at the equiatomic composition. At high temperatures it appears that the Pd-rich solid solution extends to at least 66.6 at. pct Pd and is in equilibrium with the bct phase. When annealed at 900°C, a sample containing 66.6 at. pct Pd transformed to an unidentified phase designated as X. An X-ray diffraction pattern of this phase contained sharp low-angle lines while the high-angle lines were characteristically diffuse. The observed d-spacings and relative intensities for lines in the low-angle region are presented in Table 11. THE paper of Mr. Posnjak presents a laboratory confirmation of the well known facts that air ox-idation of pure solutions of ferrous sulfate is slow and difficult and that, like many other similar reactions, the speed, may be greatly accelerated by the presence of other substances, often in very small amounts, the effect of the presence of copper being determined ex-perimentally in this case. However, it should not be. overlooked that copper is always present in heap leach-ing solutions in amounts equal to or greater than those in the experiments described; therefore the paper may be considered as an explanation of present results rather than a possible improve-ment to be added to present practice. It is not practicable and it does not pay to precipitate copper by ce-mentation below a point about 5 lb. per 1000 gal., equivalent to about 0.0005 mol. Cu. per liter, compar-ing with the approxi-mately 0.0009 mol. per liter of curve 2 in the diagrams given of course, also, in the heaps local concentrations are usually very much higher than this, which is also true of the effluent li-quors, so that I feel that it is safe to say that copper is already present in amount sufficient to realize, as large an accelerating effect as is practicable. Too much im-provement or refinement cannot be expected in a method of this kind, due to commercial limitations. It should be remembered that chemically and physically there is no sharp dividing line between leaching in place, heap leaching, and the usual tank leaching practice, practi-cally the same reagents being used in all three. From the viewpoint of extractions, etc., it is not common sense to apply leaching in place to an orebody carrying enough copper to pay for mining; and the same is true of heap leaching, for an ore carrying enough to pay for the crushing, handling, etc., of ordinary leaching. That is to say, leaching in place should properly be consid-ered only for an ore too low-grade to pay for mining, and heap leaching for the next higher grade, still how-ever too low-grade to pay for crushing and other re-finements. There is no advantage in leaching without mining or in heap leaching except lower cost of in-stallation and handling; on the other hand there are very distinct disadvantages which are inherent and which should prohibit their use except where necessity requires. The object of metallurgy is to make money out of the handling of ore, and it is purely a question of money as to how far we can go in "improving" or

With this issue of the Bulletin, the Institute puts into operation a plan which it has long had under consideration for enlarging its field of usefulness to its members. We refer to the Index to periodical literature bearing on mining, metallurgy, and related subjects, which will be found in the advertising section at the end of the Bulletin. The Index is printed on alternate pages so that anyone who desires to compile a card index can readily clip the items and paste them onto cards. By its affiliation with the Engineering Societies Library, the Institute possesses unexcelled facilities for the preparation of this Index, since practically every important engineering or technical paper published anywhere in the world is regularly received by the library. The items for publication in the Index are first selected by the library staff, but their final approval and their order of arrangement remains in the hands of the editor. A word should be said in explanation of the system of classification that has been adopted. It will be noted that the classification is extremely broad, no attempt having been made to gather the references into closely specialized groups. Our reason for breaking away from the modern tendency toward minute specialization is based upon the fact that the fundamental principles underlying all engineering are not by any means so diversified as has commonly been supposed. For example, it is not at, all unlikely that an engineer engaged in large-scale ore mining in the Southwest can profit by observing the methods employed by his colleagues in the Pennsylvania coal mines. It is notorious also how extensively the brotherhood of chemical engineers has profited by the. earlier experiences of the ore-dressing and metallurgical engineers. If the Index were minutely sub-divided, it would always be possible that the coal-mining engineer, for example, might fail to observe a most important paper because it happened to be listed tinder the head of iron mining. For this reason, mining practice in general is consolidated under one head. The same line of reasoning applies to other divisions as well. In order to make the Index of practical value to all members of the Institute, wherever they may be situated, the library will undertake to supply, for a nominal charge, an abstract, a translation, a typewritten copy, a photostat copy, or the original of any article in the Index. Requests for service of this character should be addressed directly to the Engineering Societies Library, 29 West 39th St., New York. Members are urged to cooperate toward the success of this new departure by sending us suggestions. Although every effort has been made to anticipate the wishes of the members, it is almost impossible to foretell what services may be most useful to our 7000 constituents. Furthermore, it is known that some men prefer one method of classification while others would find another method more convenient.

G. A. Moore—The tin-fusion method has been a very favorable possibility for many years. The authors apparently have settled the question that delayed the method for a long time by showing that no hydrogen is absorbed in the tin. This, of course, is very important. I want to make a few remarks concerning the absolute accuracy of analysis, which must be the final basis for deciding among the various methods. From the figures in the paper, there seems to be some remaining slight discrepancy on the actual amount of hydrogen present in various samples which may be presumed essentially identical. (This is of the order of the precision of individual analyses but appears in averaged results.) From the analyst's viewpoint, the tally of hydrogen content can be regarded as occurring in three portions. First is a large portion which comes off easily and automatically during sample storage and later on heating in the apparatus. This is fairly easily analyzed. Second is an item which may be either positive or negative in the tally sheet. In warm or hot evolution, this is a portion which, in practice, can never be re-

PERHAPS the most important event f or exploration geophysics in 1940 was the publication of three textbooks : "Geophysical Prospecting for Oil," by L. L. Nettleton ; "Exploration Geophysics," by John J. Jakosky; and "Geophysical Exploration," by C. A. Heiland. The literature had grown so bulky, and such a long time had elapsed since the publication of the texts by Ambronn and Eve, that treatises covering exploration geophysics comprehensively in all its branches and giving literature and patent references were sorely needed. This need has been satisfied admirably in these textbooks, and geophysicists owe the authors a debt of gratitude. In 1940, geophysics came of age. A conference on applied nuclear physics was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. Several papers on geophysical subjects were presented at this meeting. Geophysical activity has decreased in all parts of the world except perhaps in Canada where, under the stimulus of the war's increased demands, prospecting for oil has increased. However, even there the war has had a seriously adverse effect on prospecting for ores and upon the promotion of new properties, although activity in producing and near-producing mines has been stimulated.

Equilibria involving Cu-Pt alloys, copper oxides, and atmospheres of known ox2gen pressures have been determined at 1000' and 1200 C. The data obtained have been used to calculate activity-composition relations in the alloys. A moderate negative deviation from ideality is found. At high copper concentrations, the results of the present study are in good agreement with those of previous investigators, whereas at low copper concentrations the activities obtained in this investigation are slightly higher than those reported previously. The present study is part of a research program dealing with the determination of phase relations and thermodynamic properties of copper-containing systems at high temperatures. The information available for such systems is very scanty, particularly for copper oxides and their combinations with other oxide components. Platinum is commonly used as a container in studies of oxide equilibria. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of reaction between the oxide and the container, a knowledge of activity-composition relations in Cu-Pt alloys is necessary. Such data are not available for Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range of particular interest in the present research program, and particularly for alloys low in copper. Studies of various aspects of the systems Cu-Pt and Cu-0 have been reported in previous literature. The system Cu-Pt is known1 to form a continuous solid-solution series above 812.C, whereas ordered phases are present in certain composition ranges at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic data for the system have been reviewed by Hultgren et al.,' who presented free energies of mixing at 65Oo C, mainly derived from electromotive force cell measurements by Weibke and Matthes.3 Enthalpies of mixing at 640°C have been obtained by Oriani and Murphy4 with liquid tin calorime-try. Their results differ considerably from those derived from the temperature dependence of the data of Weibke and Matthes. Thermodynamic data for the disordered alloys have been obtained by Assayag,5 and more recently by Schmahl and Minzl,6 by Myles and Darby,7 and by McCormack, Myers, and Saxer.8 The two latter sets of data7'' became available after the present study was completed. In the system Cu-0+ two oxides are stable at high temperatures, CuO and CuzO+ each having only minor deviations from stoichiometry. Equilibria in the liquidus temperature region of the system Cu2O-CuO have been studied by Roberts and systemsmyth,9'10CuzO-CuO by Vogel and ocher,I1 by Osterwald,12 and recently the the present authors.13 The system is of the eutectic type with a eutectic temperature of 1083.C The composition of the eutectic liquid corresponds to Xcu0 = °.44, and the oxygen pressure of the coexisting gas phase is Po2 = 0.55 atm.13 Equilibrium oxygen pressures for coexistence of solid CuO and solid Cu2O have been determined by Schmahl and Muller,l4 by Gadalla, Ford, and white,l5 by Bidwell,16 and recently by the present authors.13 There is reasonably good agreement among the various sets of data. Free energies of formation of Cu2O(s) from the elements have been derived by Tretyakov,17 by Bidwell,16 by Kiukkola and wagner,18 by Pal'guev and Neuimin," and by Steele and Alcock,20 There is particularly good agreement among the latter three1'-20 sets of data.
