IT is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling mud s to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2,3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 . The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable ent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the "tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. The increase in electrical resistivity, ?pT,at 78°K was measured as a function of elongation, E, at 78°K for a 2 pct (approximately) by weight finely divided alumina in silver material. The amount of increase in electrical resistivity (?pT) is a function of the amount of alumina present and can be represented by: ?pT = cen where c and n are constants. The constant c increases and the exponent n decreases with increasing alumina content. Approximately 33 pct of the resistivity increase is recovered upon annealing at room temperature. RECENTLY, dispersed phase alloys' have shown promise for use at elevated temperatures. These materials have a high creep resistance, a high-temperature strength considerably above that of the pure matrix, and a high electrical conductivity. These materials also show other properties such as retardation of re crystallization and resistance to flow even above the melting point of the matrix.' It is believed that high-temperature creep is retarded in these materials because the dispersed phase blocks the motion of dislocations. According to schoeck3 and also Weertman,4 the rate controlling process is the climb of dislocations around the dispersed phase particles. Any mechanical property of these materials, or any other material for that matter, can be explained on the basis of defect structures and their interrelations. It would certainly be interesting to learn something about the effect of a dispersed phase on dislocation densities and also their effect on point defect concentrations following cold work. This is the purpose of the research discussed herein. The method used was the measurement of the electrical resistivity as a function of elongation at low temperatures. This scheme has already been applied to the studies of pure metals.5 Electrical resistivity measurements conducted on pure metals such as copper, silver, gold, and so forth, have indicated that defects such as vacancies and dislocations are formed during deformation.5 It has been shown by van Bueren6 that the resistivity change, ?p, should increase with elongation, E, according to the following relation: Ap=Al/2 + B£3/2 where A and B are constants of the system; ?p is in µ? cm. The first term refers to the amount of resistivity change associated with line defects and the second term with the change associated with point defects. A later calculation yielded exponents of 3/4 and 5/4, respectively.6 Manintveld7 has shown that the resistivity of copper increases with strain according to a 3/2 power law, whereas van Bueren has shown that the resistivity of silver increases according to a 5/4 power law. Assuming then that van Bueren's calculations are correct, it appears that line defects contribute very little to the electrical resistivity. There is some doubt, however, as to the validity of van Bueren's expressions for all cubic metals.' In fact, the data on copper and silver are not conclusive. In this in-

THE geologist or mining engineer, whose work takes him into the western United States, whether for the Government or private enterprises, is likely to be called upon to classify public lands as to their mineral character, or to review such classification already made, usually by a Government geologist or mineral inspector. The public-land law covering the matter is clear and logical, and a knowledge of its simpler principles is necessary to intelligent classification work. There are two classes of cases in which a classification of lands as mineral or non-mineral may be required: .first, cases in which lands classified as mineral will be retained by the Government and lands classified as non-mineral alienated; second, cases in which lands classified as mineral will be alienated and lands classified as non-mineral retained.

In the preparation of this paper, the author has drawn upon experience with the operation of a blast furnace on Ioo per cent scrap burden, which he believes was the first operation of its kind in the country. It is the writer's further belief that much of the controversy attending discussions of this subject may be obviated by the presentation of a group of facts that should be known by blast-furnace men and open-hearth men alike. The following question has been raised: "Is iron made with scrap in the blastfurnace charge as good iron as that made without scrap—made with straight ore?" This question may he answered in part by the fact that the open-hearth men of the Bethlehem Steel Co. who used pig iron from a blast furnace that operated on Ioo per cent steel scrap found no difficulty in the processing of such iron other than that to be expected from the known analysis. Operation with ioo PeR Cent Steel Scrap During World War I, there was accumulated at the Bethlehem plant of the Bethlehem Steel Co. some 22,000 tons of alloy-steel turnings and borings. This scrap material was highly corroded and, like alloy-steel turnings of that period, were as a drug on the market. There was also a small tonnage of scale, rich in valuable metal. If this scrap could be worked up into pig iron, it would become readily available for use in the open hearth. In order that the pig iron should contain the maximum percentage of nickel, permission was obtained from the Management to try a Ioo per cent scrap operation. Accordingly, a blast furnace was swung over on July 25, 1919; the percentage of steel scrap increased more or less irregularly until July 29, when Ioo per cent steel turnings were charged. Except for occasional charges of nickel scale as an "cxtra," the operation continued uninterruptedly until Aug. 27, when the furnace was swung back to the regular ore—ore and scrap—operation. During this period, the furnace production ranged from a low of 568.60 tons to a maximum of 766.07 tons. At the swing-over from Ioo per cent scrap to the regular burden, the charge I hung up rather severely. While the latter condition has nothing to do with the object of the paper, a brief discussion of the experience will appear later because of the interest it may have for blast-furnace operators. In Table I, results of the first and last days of the ore charge are shown, July 25 and July 29. The last column shows a summary for the period of maximum scrap ' charge. The furnace employed had a hearth 16 ft. o in., bosh 22 ft. o in., stock line 15 ft. 6 in., bell 11 ft. 6 in., batter in., bosh angle 73' 27' and a Balrer-Neuman top, with gas-engine blowers. This expanded and more detailed supplement to earlier published work1 is offered as a means to demonstrate the high empirical correlation which exists between the readily measured coal bench scale test parameters of volatile matter (d & a.f.), Hard-grove grindability index (HGI), Koppers cone bulk density (BD) and pulverization level (% passing a 1/8-in. screen) to the less readily measured full scale coke stability index. Thus, Fig. 1, 2 and 3 represent the correlated test data contained in Tables I, II and III respectively. Ninety-six coals are correlated so that 97% of the resultant cokes fall within two points and 100% fall within three points of the actual tested coke stability indices. The main generalizations which can be drawn from the correlation of these coals are as follows: 1) The coke stability indices for higher bulk density coals (46.0 BD to 50.6 BD) appear to be largely influenced by differing combinations of factors for coals above and below a pivotal point of approximately 36% to 37% volatile matter. Below this pivotal volatile matter coke stability index appears to be influenced largely as a result of changes to the coal volatile matter and pulverization level. While above this pivotal volatile matter coke stability indices appear to be dependent on the coal hardness, as measured by the HGI, and to some extent upon coal volatile matter. Pulverization appears to have little influence on the coke stabilities of the harder coals (52 HGI to 58 HGI) of greater than 36% to 37% volatile matter. 2) The coke stability indices for lower bulk density coals (41 BD to 45.9 BD) appears to be largely influenced by changes to coal volatile matter and pulverization level for softer coals above approximately 58 HGI. 3) The main empirical observation to be drawn from these results is that for coals above approximately 36% to 37% volatile matter the quantities of hard and soft constituents as measured by the HGI are important when defining coal rank for correlation to the coke stability index.

DESTRUCTION of the plants, machines, utilities, tools, materials, and other essentials for peacetime living penalizes not only the owners of the materials destroyed, but the world as a whole. Specifically, the fundamental fallacy of any proposal for the in- discriminate destruction of the German industrial system is that it fails to differentiate between the wartime and the peacetime economy of the Reich. We are for one simple, clear objective-an effective industrial means to keep Germany from starting another war. This objective should not be con- fused, especially before the war is even won, with the appropriate punishment of Germany or with the international arrangements for the long future to be made around the peace table by the representatives of the Allied Nations after victory is achieved. This paper, therefore, does not deal with broad, complex postwar questions of diplomacy and international policy. "Unconditional surrender" implies disarmament of the German armies, the surrender of all arms, munitions, air- planes, and other ordnance material in stock piles or in process. It also should include the elimination of all German war production facilities, such as ordnance plants, munitions plants, and submarine works, and the control of raw materials required by war industries.

IN the vicinity of Kirkland Lake, northern Ontario, several gold mines are producing, and three are at present being operated very profitably. At these three mines and on the adjoining properties east and west of them there have been important developments during the past year, and additional equipment has been installed to permit a large increase in output. At the end of 1924 the total production amounted to $13,688,600. For the year 1926 the production is estimated at about $19,000,000, and during 1926 the output should be much greater than that of 1925. The mines which are being operated most profitably and are producing a large part of the ore now being milled are the Wright-Hargreaves, Lake Shore and Teck-Hughes. Others which have contributed smaller amounts are the Tough-Oakes-Burnside and the Kirk- land Lake Gold mines.

MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

In the cyanidation of gold, silver and mixed ores, the solids, suspended in the pulp after fine grinding, primary settling and scries agitation arc subjected to a washing step known, generally, as countercurrent decanta-tion, abbreviated C.C.D The conventional C.C.D. plant consists of a series of separate thickeners—three to five in number—arranged in series on slightly different elevations. Solids settled in the first thickener are pumped at maximum density into the second thickener, where they arc diluted with weak solution overflowing the third. After settling in the second thickener they are pumped to the third, where the process of repulping with still weaker solution is repeated, and so on throughout the system, until they reach the last thickener and are repulped with barren solution or water. Recently there has been developed a new type of thickener, known as the Dorr Washing Tray Thickener, consisting of up to five individual thickeners, which performs in a single unit all the functions of a conven-tional C.C.D plant. Fig. 1 illustrates the essential features. It is a multicompartment tray thickener, in which the trays operate in scries instead of in parallel for countercurrent washing. Feed enters the top compartment via a central, semisubmerged feed well. Strong solution overflows into a peripheral launder. Solids settle to the bottom, are raked to the center and flow into the top of the second compartment, directly below, via an inverted cup and scal. Solids pass downward, compartment by compartment, against a counter flow of wash solution and finally of fresh water. Thus, in accord-:trice with the basic C.C.D. principle, the solids transfer the dissolved metal content to the wash solution and finally are removed by a diaphragm pump from the bottom compartment virtually free of valuable material. Similarly, the wash water, as it flows through the system, becomes increasingly enriched in dissolved metal until it overflows from compartment two and returns to the process.

Since 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1,2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression.3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above—i.e., as a [110] fiber texture—although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orientati011 that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deformation. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its development, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a comparison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystalliile specimen; the origin of asterism ill deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces or slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains ill all aggregate to the strain of the whole.

Despite the large amount of study which has been devoted to the subject our present knowledge of the copper-oxygen system remains incomplete and unsatisfactory .in many respects. This applies particularly to those regions in which solid metallic copper exists. The primary object of the present paper is the contribution of new information relative to the solid solubility of oxygen (or cuprous oxide) in copper at atmospheric pressure, together with certain observations in the low-pressure regions of the system. It seems appropriate also to present a brief summary of the outstanding previous work on the constitution of mixtures of copper with its lowest oxide in order. to show the relation between the new facts and the system as a whole. The earliest recorded investigations of the copper-oxygen system are those of M. S. Lucas(l) $ and of M. Chevillot(2) in 1819 and 1820. Lucas believed that liquid copper is capable of dissolving its oxide, but neither he nor Chevillot was able to furnish convincing proof of this property. It was not until 1866 that T. Graham(3) definitely established the existence of such a solubility. Nine years later W. Hampe(4) measured its extent and roughly outlined the copper-rich portion of the system. The first really precise examination of the constitutional relationship between copper and cuprous oxide, however, was that of E. Heyn(5) who in 1900 published a temperature-concentration diagram covering the range from 0 to 10 per cent of cuprous oxide at atmospheric pressure. Within these limits of composition cuprous oxide was found to dissolve in liquid copper, forming at 3.4 to 3.5 per cent a eutectic which melted at 1065" C. R. E. Slade and F. D. Farrow(6) extended these studies to mixtures of higher oxygen content. They discovered that between 20 and 95 per cent of cuprous oxide the metal and oxide form two liquid phases at a monotectic reaction of 1195" C. The span of the biliquidal region diminishes slightly

ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-
