The statistics set forth by Professor Mitchell in a proceding paper very carefully brought out the points that indicate that a marked amount of consideration must be given to" the haulage problem to adapt it to local conditions as encountered. Professor Mitchell's paper showed a spread of from 10 tons per man to 50 tons per man on the production crews, which spread can be recognized as entirely too large when one considers that the product is being sold at a price within very close limits. While a portion of this spread may be explained by different methods in cost accounting as to what employees are applicable to the production crew, it cannot all be blamed on an accounting method. A good portion must be explained by the improper application of equipment to the needs incurred by the local conditions. It is in an endeavor to go into this phase that this paper is given. It will be necessary to qualify the points covered in order to keep the subject from becoming too wide in scope. Along this line, conditions will be only those involved in bituminous coal mine practices and only the haulage of coal that is loaded with mobile loading machines in seams 4 ft thick and better. Haulage Methods Employed The Consolidated Coal Co. (Illinois) has been operating on a modernized basis for about 20 yr. By modernized we mean the loading of coal with mobile loading equipment. In review of haulage methods, it must be remembered that the main line electric haulage locomotive has been in service for some 40 or jo years. To augment this main line haulage, the mule did a quite satisfactory job during hand-loading days, but was later replaced by the gathering locomotive, either battery or cable-reel operated. This type of haulage was the method in common use at the time the mechanical loading of coal became of major importance and the success or failure of loading machine installations may be largely accredited to haulage facilities in the early days; that is, in the period around 1930. The Consolidated Coal Co. had its struggle with this problem beginning in about 1927 or 1928. We were somewhat fortunate in that we were already using gathering locomotives powered by storage batteries at the time we introduced mechanical loading. This meant that we did not have to spend as much time training motormen and trip riders as many mines did that utilized only mules for their secondary haulage. This was all advantage, and our efforts could be focused on ways and means of providing adequate car service to the loading machine. Like most operations, we endeavored to gear the car service to the capacity of the machine, with a large crew endeavoring to load the maximum tonnage that the machine would handle. An inner complex is a cyclic chemical structure containing an inorganic cation that is bound simultaneously to several atoms in a single organic molecule; on the one hand by means of ordinary valence bonds (electron exchange), on the other hand through the action of the electric field thus created, which satisfies the so-called secondary valences. The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity.4,7-l3 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. (Example: copper complex of salicyl-aldoxime') It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required. One of the well-known applications of chelate-forming compounds has been the development of specific reagents in analytical chemistry, creation of the spot-test method,4,14-16 and the application of the same principles to the contact print method for determining minerals." Chelate-forming Compounds as Collectors In the field of flotation, where selectivity is often a quality of paramount importance for the collector, various workers have lately attempted to apply their knowledge of specific organic analytical reagents to this purpose. A. C. Vivian18 has concentrated cassiterite by using ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxyl-amine (Cupferron) C6H5NO(=NONH4). Holmanl9 has tested dimethylglyoxime for the flotation of nickel oxide minerals, while deWitt has shown in a series of systematic experiments that alpha-diox-imes were generally selective collectors for nickel ores. THEN sufficient ore has been blocked out on a lease to warrant a shaft, the proposed. Location of the shaft should be carefully considered, as the old promoter's method of sinking wherever his hat landed is a sad mistake as some: of us have learned by trying to operate such mines. In some instances certain conditions exist, such as mill location, railroad right of way, etc., that necessitate a change of location from the. ideal, but under average conditions and with the knowledge of the formation gained from the drill logs and with the general trend of the orebody known, the shaft can be located from. the standpoint of its future relation to the mine with re-gard to hauling and' hoisting a maximum tonnage: at a minimum cost per ton, also taking into account the minimum amount of expense and trouble- in sinking. Quite a few shafts are located in the wall of a run or just in the thin edge of the orebody: As a general rule the formation here is solid and permits rapid and safe sinking, and the shaft pillars are left in practically valueless material. This permits the withdrawal of pillars and still keeps the shaft protected. By opening a shaft in thin ground, you are not tempted to cut it high, wide, and handsome, but to shape it up-with ample clearance for lay-bys and with more of an idea of permanency, as a few hundred extra dollars spent around the shafts for proper track installation will re-turn, a good rate of interest in ease of handling "cans," quick get-away; and fewer wrecks. Nearly all the shafts in this district are sunk on a contract basis, the con-tractors furnishing all labor and explosives, and the company building the sinking-derrick, dump-track, and furnishing, all equipment, material, and power. The following costs are the averages, for three shafts sunk through good solid formation, with no water to, contend with, and approximately 260 -ft., deep, having about-100 ft. of shale. The contract price was $9 per foot with the shale and $13 per foot in the solid, making a total of $2,980 paid to the contractor. The wages paid by the contractor were, $5 per shift for the hoist-man, who also sharpened steel, $6 for the lead shaft man, and $5 for the helper;, the cribbing was sawed on contract for 40c. per shaft: foot; about. 94 board feet. of cribbing was used per foot of staggered cribbing and 168 board feet per foot of solid cribbing.

K ENTUCKY'S first acid-grade fluorspar flotation Kmill, shown in Fig. 1, was placed in operation Aug. 1, 1952, by the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. at Mexico, Ky. During 1951 a critical shortage of acid-grade fluorspar developed and it became necessary for the company to produce part of its fluorspar requirements. In 1951 the company purchased the Crider and Lennen metallurgical fluorspar mill and an adjacent stockpile of tailing at Mexico, Ky. The tailing, assaying about 26 pct calcium fluoride, originated from log washer and jig mill concentrators in the area. As the mill did not have a fluorspar dryer or convenient rail facilities, the company leased the Burleson concentrator at Marion, Ky., where these facilities were available. At Marion, Ky., on the Illinois Central Railroad, dry acid-grade fluorspar is transported direct to the company's Calvert City, Ky., hydrofluoric acid plant. The Mexico flotation plant was reconditioned and designed to produce acid-grade fluorspar from the jig tailing stockpile. The new plant flowsheet is shown in Fig. 2. SEVERAL improvements have been made in Granby smelting practice since the company abandoned the direct smelting of raw ore in the blast furnaces in June, 1927, in favor of sintered concentrate. These improvements have been made in several fields, but the most novel and outstanding change was the development of a process of concentrating most of the gold, and a somewhat smaller fraction of the silver present, in a small portion of the blister copper produced. The practice of making "copper bottoms" is usually associated with the reverberatory smelting of copper ores containing high percentages of impurities, or of copper matte high in precious metals. It has for its object, in the one case, the production of a major part of the copper relatively free from impurities and, in the other case, the production of a small per¬centage of the copper carrying the major part of the precious metals. Although the blister copper produced at the Anyox plant of the Granby company is remarkably free from deleterious impurities and normally contains no great amount of precious metals, certain economic considerations made it advisable to concentrate the existing precious metals into a relatively small percentage of the blister copper produced. The process devised took advantage of principles and reactions of the usual bottoms processes, but was carried out in the converters instead of in a reverberatory furnace.

IN the course of an extensive investigation of the comparative properties of several types of copper, data were obtained on the cold working and subsequent recovery and recrystallization of the copper. In this paper, relations between the degree of cold work and the course of recrystallization are developed. In particular, it is shown that the course of recrystallization over long periods of time and at low temperatures can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from short-time high-temperature recrystallization data. MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION Three types of copper were used in this investigation; these were tough pitch, OFHC, and OFHC copper with 15 oz per ton of silver added identified herein as Lots C, D, and F, respectively. The material was supplied by the American Metal Co. Ltd., and processed by the Rome Cable Co. The analyses of the three types of copper are given in Table 1. Originally, it started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. These bars were heated to 871°C in air and hot rolled to 3/8 in. rod. This rod was cold drawn to 0.204 in. rod (70 pct reduction) in three passes and annealed at 427°C for 4 hrs. A portion of the 3/8 in. rod was saved for more detailed cold-drawing experiments. Starting with the annealed 0.204 in. rod, hard-drawn wires were produced by cold drawing to 0.081 in. wire in 7 passes (84.4 pct reduction in area). Half-hard wires were made by cold drawing the 0.204 in. rod to 0.102 in. wire, (75 pct reduction) in 6 passes and annealing at 427°C for 4 hrs. This annealed wire was then drawn to 0.081 in. wire, (37.1 pct reduction) in 2 passes. Square rod was made by hot rolling wire bars to 9/16 in, rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445 in.-diam rod and annealed for 3 1/2 hrs at 538°C. It was then cold drawn to 0.325 in. rod and again annealed at 538°C for 3 1/2 hrs. Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling this material to 0.257 X 0.257 in. rod, a reduction in area of 20.5 pct. Half-hard square rods were made by cold rolling to 0.268 X 0.268 in. square, annealing for 332 hrs at 538°C and cold rolling to 0.257 X 0.257 in., a reduction of 8.5 pct. Soft wire or rod was made from all types of copper by annealing the hard-drawn material at 343°C for 3 hrs in steam. The grain size of the annealed 0.081 in. wire varied slightly among the three lots: from 0.015-0.025 mm in the silver-bearing OFHC to 0.035-0.045 mm in the OFHC copper. The annealed 0.257 in. wires were more uniform in grain size, averaging about 0.035-0.045 mm. Representative structures are shown in Fig I. EFFECT OF COLD DRAWING AND TENSILE STRAIN ON STRENGTH OF COPPER Conventional tensile tests were performed on the three types of copper in the various degrees of hardness described above. The year 1957 was one of declining metal price and production. Many lead-zinc-copper mines were forced to close, and the remaining mines limited production to stay more in line with demand. High cost of labor, supplies, and equipment and high taxes aggravated the situation. Some operators postponed or abandoned expansion programs because of uncertain economic conditions. Output was curtailed by elimination of over- time employment and reduction of the working force. The number of employes laid off was small- reduction in the labor force was accomplished by not replacing those who left a company's employ.

THE bulk of natural phosphates is comprised of calcium phosphates, which are usually apatites;1 calcium aluminum phosphates such as pseudowavellite;2 and aluminum phosphates, which occur in extensive deposits, notably on Grand Connetable Island.3 Nearly all deposits of current commercial value are apatite, often with admixed material of other classes. In the trade coarsely crystalline material, mainly fluorapatite of igneous origin, moves as apatite, whereas the fine-grained material of sedimentary origin is marketed as phosphate rock. The latter classification includes the phosphate shales in western North America. Although several genetic varieties of phosphate rock are recognized,4 most known reserves are of marine origin. Calcium phosphate is concentrated from Florida land pebble and Florida hard rock deposits and from Tennessee brown rock deposits. Phosphate Rock as a Fluorine Carrier: More than two decades ago Reynolds and Jacob surveyed the fluorine content of commercial phosphate rock from various parts of the world.3,5 Later these samples were reanalyzed by a new and more reliable method of determining flourine.6,7 The revised results with interim additions of new samples, published a few years ago in a brief summary,' are shown in Figs. 1-3. Through the points representing the respective varieties of rock medial straight lines are drawn. In some instances the lines are well defined by the points; in others, where scattering renders the position of the best line uncertain, the greater weight is given points near the end of the covered range. Wherever distinct varieties are not recognized among regional deposits the custom is to identify the sample with the geographical location of the deposit.

THE township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20° 42' 53" and longitude E: 140° 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons. of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about £33 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all ' development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s. and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case.

MATHEWS, Syracuse, N. Y.-I should like to ask the authors if there is any evidence of chemical change resulting information of, alpha iron from the gamma crystals found in nickel steel of high nickel content when stressed beyond the elastic limit, similar to the effect produced by drastic cooling. Would the stresses mentioned and the drastic cooling both result in an increase in magnetic induction? I would also like to ask the authors if they have made a test of the hardness. It would be very interesting to see whether the hardness decreased under the conditions of stress, as might be the case if alpha iron were produced. PAUL D. MERICA, Washington, D. C.-While it is impossible to state absolutely, it is my belief that the effect of deformation is approximately the same as, that of -drastic cooling, but we did not make a test, of the hardness.

THE mining .district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line-the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. HISTORY The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during. the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties.

I need not say that I highly approve of the original Welch section, for it is in principle similar to the design which I made ufteen yeam subsequently; and from a professional point of view I would fully concecle to Mr. Welch the credit of first designing the modern steel-rail section. From com- mercial, matter of tict, and practical point of view, he was, however, before his time by many years; or to put it in another way, rail making was ten years behind its time when the new metal steel was first introduced for rails. If his design has been incorrectly identified with my name (as the sections are similar in principle, though they differ in thickness of flange and web), I beg to say (1st) that I much regret the misun- Understanding which has arisen through no fault of niine, aud (2d) that no confusion has been intentionally created by me. Hematite-magnetite ore bodies at Iron Mountain, Missouri, have produced nearly 9 million tons of iron ore concentrates since 1844. The ore minerals occur principally as open-space filling in fractured and brecciated andesite porphyry with very minor replacement of the wall rocks. The enclosing rocks are Precambrian in age and consist of a series of dacite, rhyolite, and andesite flows aggregating about 2000 feet in thickness. All of the ore is in andesite and the mineralization is Precambrian in age. The shape of the ore bodies, the breccia character of the ore, and the gangue mineralogy are believed to be unique. One of the two main ore bodies is crudely dome-shaped with a tendency for development of concentric mineralized shells; the other is an elongated lense in plan but hook-shaped in cross section. Both have strong linear elements striking northeast, east-west, or northwest. Various modes of origin for the structures and for the tension breccias have been suggested, but none is completely satisfactory. Hematite is the main ore mineral; magnetite is subordinate. Important gangue minerals are andradite, quartz, calcite, actinolite, apatite, epidote, and chlorite. Although some evidence favors injection of an iron-rich melt, other evidence suggests ore formation by a high temperature, water-rich solution.

ENGINEERING educators and industries are worried about the engineering manpower shortage that is predicted as a result of the increasing demand for trained engineers not only by industry but by the armed services. This is in the face of a decreasing supply, as is shown by this and other studies. Not only has the number of entering freshmen been decreasing since 1947, because of a decrease in the number of high school graduates entering engineering, but the total number of high school graduates will continue to decrease until 1958 because of the lowered birth rate during the depression years.

ENGINEERING COUNCIL has passed, not out, but upward! Therefore, its recent wake was conducted by itself as a joyful occasion somewhat in advance of its official demise. Council held its last meeting in Washington, Dec. 16, 1920. Business was transacted with dignified gravity in the forenoon. During the afternoon calls were made upon the chiefs of technical bureaus of the Government: the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army; Chief of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department; Director of U. S. Reclamation Service; Director of U. S. Geological Survey; Director of Bureau of Mines. The Council pronounced them, each and all, able men and true. But what of the evening? Well, there was a dinner at the Washington Hotel. Twenty-six men gathered around a flower-strewn table-not a casket. As guests, there graced the festive board the hosts of the afternoon calls, and a number of members of the new American Engineering Council. The body about to be apotheosized-otherwise known as Engineering Council-was both jocular and reminiscent. Rewards were bestowed and appreciations expressed. To the man who had for three long years borne the burden of chairmanship and whose financial recklessness made possible the Washington office and the movement for a National Public Works Department, the following "note," duly engrossed and signed, was given, accompanied by "The Song of the Council Crew."

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development.
