SUDBURY ore processed by International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. was recovered for many years as two mill concentrates, one primarily of copper, and the other mixed pentlandite-pyrrhotite, But, Since iron content of the nickeliferous pyrrhotite concentrate was ten times its nickel value, capacity of smelting was limited by the need for slagging the excess iron. A process for recovering the iron con- tent was developed after some years of research and a $20-million plant was constructed to employ the new method. Built near Copper Cliff, Ont., the plant started operation early in 1956, scheduled for separate treatment of 365,000 tons of pyrrhotite each year. It is only the first unit of an installation which will have a capacity of more than 1 million tons per year of pyrrhotite. By early 1958, production totaled more than 200,000 long tons of 68 pct Fe pellets containing 0.003 pct P, 1.5 pct SiO2, 0.01 pct S, and 0.15 pct Ni.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. comprises a Gold Division at Joutel, Quebec, and a Silver Division at Cobalt, Ontario. In 1979 the Silver Division milled 41,700 mt (46,000 st) of ore at a recovered grade of 139 g per mt (4.06 oz per st) for a production of 5,816 kg (187,000 oz) of silver. The 100 -year -old mining, camp of Cobalt has long been noted for its high-grade silver ores, and now seems to be on the threshold of being revived with several companies operating in the area. In 1979, the Gold Division milled at the rate of 27,200 mt per month (30,000 st) and processed 333,000 mt (367,000 st) at a grade of 6.58 g per mt (0.192 oz per st) with a mill recovery of 91.670 to produce 2,013 kg (64,700 oz) of gold. The average total cost per ton milled was $22.10 per mt ($20.05 per st) which was $3.66 per g ($1 13.90 per 0s). These figures make Agnico-Eagle one of the lowest cost producers in North America. Gold occurrence in the Joutel ore is fine-grained and contained within sulfide facies composed mainly of pyrite with minor pyrrhotite. Two underground mining methods are employed with long hole stoping accounting for about 75% of the ore mined and shrinkage stoping the remainder. Ore from underground is hoisted into a 545 mt (600 st) coarse ore bin from where it is conveyed to a 45 mt (50 st) surge bin ahead of the 10-51 Hydrocone crusher. Crushed ore is then screened to make a 13 mm (112 in.) product with the oversize being recrushed in a 7-60 Hydrocone. Mill feed is conveyed to two 900 mt (1,000 st) fine ore bins. The Hydrocones were installed as part of a new crushing plant in March of 1980 and have contributed substantially to an increase in mill capacity. Space has been left to install a third crusher in the future. The fine ore bins discharge to a 2.75 m by 3.66 m (9 ft by 12 ft) rod mill, followed by a 3. 7 m by 5.5 m (12 ft by 18 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a Krebs 380 mm (15 in.) cyclone to produce a 7070 minus 37 micron (400 mesh) .flotation feed. This pulp is first treated in a 34 cu m (1, 200 cu ft) Maxwell flotation cell and then in an additional twelve 2.8 cu m (100 cu ft) cells. Combined flotation concentrates are reground to 9070 minus 37 microns (400 mesh) in a 1.8 m by 4.9 m (6 ft by 16 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a single Krebs 254 mrn (10 in.) cyclone. Flotation tailings are sent to the tailings dam. Reground concentrates are then aerated with lime to a single Pachuca and thickened in a 16.75 m (55 ft) diameter thickener with the addition of diesel fuel to render any activated graphite inert to adsorption of

During the last fifteen years the progress made in the science of lithology has been of a very marked character. From being a miscellaneous collection of facts and observations regarding certain mineral aggregates seemingly incapable of systematic arrangement, it has become a most interesting and orderly department of science. The investigators who have brought about this great change have recorded the results of their labors, and placed at our service an extensive and varied literature on the subject. To this I have paid some attention, and partly from studying it,, partly from my own observations, I have wrought out a classification of original or crystalline rocks, which I venture to bring under the notice of the members of this Institute. The practical importance of the subject will be acknowledged when it is considered that rock species are not without their influence on the contents of the mineral veins which intersect them. Besides, the Institute has been doing good service in defining terms in metallurgy, and no doubt in mining and geology we might

IT IS the purpose of this paper to summarize, as far as possible, the metallurgical information and experience gained by the Ordnance Department, during the War, in the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases, to describe the tests to which artillery cartridge cases were put, and to summarize the knowledge and experience gained in this testing. The authors wish to acknowledge the aid given by manufacturers, army officers, and civilian employees of the Ordnance Department in obtaining these data. Artillery cartridge cases are cold drawn from circular disks punched from strips of rolled brass. The manufacture involves from 25 to 30 main operations, which are done almost entirely on a punch press. Descriptions of the operations have appeared in various periodicals and, therefore, will not be given here. After each cupping, or drawing, operation, except the last, the cases are annealed at from 540° to 650° C. (1000° to 1200°F.), to remove all the hardening stresses set up in the metal and to allow complete recrystallization. After each annealing, the cases are pickled in niter cake or sulfuric-acid solution and then washed in water to remove all traces of acid. In some instances, the cases are then immersed in a cyanide-salt solution, and afterwards rinsed in water, to remove the thin layer of copper that forms on the surface of the cases during the acid pickle. The last cold-drawing operation is followed, by the heading operation which, by flattening the head of the case on the outside, causes the metal to flow on the inside to approximately the proper finished dimensions. The mouth, or open end, is then annealed at 430° to 480° C. (800° to 900° F.) by immersion in a salt bath or by gas flames. After being washed, the cases are tapered, when they are ready for machining, inspection, and testing.

Our merchant marine is rapidly outgrowing our consular service, according to Edward N. Hurley, Chairman of the United States Shipping Board, who urges that steps be taken immediately to provide facilities abroad for handling the millions of tons of shipping which will be afloat under the American flag in peaceful trade when the war is over. When peace is restored and our present tonnage is scattered over world trade routes, the consular service will be inadequate to handle our ships: Besides, it will have to work against the handicaps of obsolete shipping regulations and, in many cases, lack of experience. There are nearly 100 pages in the United States consular regulations dealing with shipping platters. . Many of these regulations are based on old treaties and many of them are obsolete. There are also differences between treaties with various countries. Our consuls often lack authority to handle matters involving the interests of our sailors and shipowners. Before we can operate a modern merchant marine we must revise, standardize, and simplify this whole mass of regulations and bring them up to the efficiency of other nations' practice.

This paper covers some of the problems presented to the oil industry in the drilling of oil wells in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The hazards, delays and relative costs of offshore drilling are reviewed and various forms of drilling platforms discussed. The requirements of the offshore drilling rig are summarized together with the principal items affecting the cost of construction. Sea waves and their size and characteristics as affecting offshore platforms are reviewed. Drilling platforms are classified as fixed, or fixed and floating. Fixed platforms of the conventional cofferdam and pile-supported type are discussed together with their good points and their limitations. The desirability is pointed out of eliminating as much offshore work as possible where operations are subjected to constant and expensive delay and substituting therefor the prefabrication of structures ashore or in sheltered waters. Marked economy will come with the standardization of offshore rigs aid special means of transporting them to the site. Several types of structure which are partly pile-supported and partly buoyancy-supported are discussed and their possibilities of future usefulness commented upon. General Considerations The predominant attribute of offshore drilling equipment is that it must be equal to the job in hand. We therefore give first thought to the matter of adequacy. In view of the probable depth of drilling, the investment involved and the per diem labor costs, it is assumed heavy modern drilling equipment will be employed. In order to usc such equipment efficiently, the working deck must be ample in size and strength and supported so as to be relatively free from motion and from green seas even in heavy storms. These requirements necessitate a high and rigid land-based support for the drilling rig and machinery with plenty of space for supplies, such as pipe, mud, water and fuel, with reserves for days when transportation from shore is impracticable. In offshore rigs the crew will be housed onboard in comfortable quarters, probably air conditioned and equipped with a galley and refrigerated food storage. An important consideration will be the ability to transfer stores and crew to and from the rig in all but the heaviest weather and the platforms must be protected from the impact of supply vessels when alongside. It will be essential to maintain continuous communication with shore by radio or cable, not forgetting the possibility of a helicopter landing space for the transfer of crew and light stores as well as a means of general communication. Whatever structure is constructed must be secure from storms of hurricane force and a safe place for the operating crew to work. If the well comes in, the drilling rig will presumably be removed and a small but rugged pile-supported platform will remain to carry the Christmas tree with safe working space around it. Iraq, formerly called Mesopotamia in Asiatic Turkey, became a kingdom under British Mandate after the world war and is expected to gain its independence in 1932 when it enters the League of Nations. The kingdom is shown on Fig. 1 in its relations to neighboring countries, to the Mediterranean Sea and to the Persian Gulf. It is slightly smaller than the State of Texas with its capitol, Baghdad, inland about as far from the Persian Gulf as Breckinridge, Tex., is from the Houston Shipping Channel. The oil fields lie 180 to 225 miles north of Baghdad, or about as far as from Breckinridge to Oklahoma City, and about as far from the Mediterranean as Fort Worth is from Hobbs, N. M. A narrow-gage railway runs from Basra, the Persian Gulf port, to Baghdad. From there another narrow-gage runs into the Kurdish hills east of the Tigris to Kirkuk. A standard-gage, part of the old Berlin-Baghdad system, follows the west bank of the Tigris northward from Baghdad to Baiji, a village about 100 miles south of Mosul. No railway exists between Iraq and the Mediterranean, though the Anatolian Railways in southern Turkey come to within 50 miles of the Iraq frontier and 120 miles of Mosul. Surveys have been completed for a railway through British Mandates from Haifa to Baghdad as well as for a railway through French Mandated Syria from Tripoli to Abu Kemal near the Iraq border. Wagon roads, excepting those constructed by the oil companies, are few and indifferent in Iraq and no road exists across the desert to the Mediterranean, but contrary to prevalent beliefs the surface is firm and free from sand dunes so that motor cars can go almost anywhere in dry weather, with ease. Frequent motor car and airplane service exists between Baghdad and the Mediterranean ports and motor car service may be had between Kirkuk and Nisibin, Turkey, where on two days each week through Wagons Lits service is available to Paris. Baghdad is about 21 days distant from New York City with present transport facilities. Computer techniques now have been applied to the solution of a wide variety of scientific and engineering problems in the mining industry, but generally not in great depth in any one area. In mining, the area covered in greatest depth and with the greatest success has probably been mine planning and to a lesser degree production scheduling. A rather comprehensive review of the literature related to mine planning and production scheduling indicates that contributions in these areas have been geographically, as well as organizationally, widespread. Of twenty-six papers reviewed, eleven were from industry, eight from educational institutions, four from computer vendors, two from the Bureau of Mines, and one from a private consultant. The conclusions that can be derived from the literature are: First, the-state-of-the art has advanced to the point that computing ore reserves and developing mining plans with the aid of the computer is now a routine practice; second, the application of the computer to mine planning problems has markedly improved our ability to estimate ore reserves, more accurately define pit limits, and determine an optimum mining sequence. MINE PLANNING The papers in this section deal essentially with the problem of determining the final pit limits of an orebody and the ore reserves associated with a given pit limit. The problem is probably best described by Soderberg25 and more recently by Reibell. 23. There are two techniques currently being applied to this problem by several mining companies: 1) the multiple-cone technique and 2) the Lerch-Grossman algorithm. The multiple-cone technique is the older of the two techniques and has the advantage of being more flexible, allowing an engineer to easily vary pit slopes in different sectors of the design. The technique can also be used to define intermediate pit contours. The Lerch-Grossman algorithm is appealing in that the final solution is given in the form of a true mathematical optimum. The technique is limited, however, in that the size of the blocks in the orebody model are a function of the desired

More than 90 per cent of the ore produced by stoping at McIntyre is mined by horizontal cut-and-fill methods. The remainder is mined by square set and fill. In the stopes on the upper levels, mill holes are spaced 80 ft. apart and usually it is feasible to mine the breast for the full distance between the mill holes in one operation and to break, clean out and fill without any support for the roof or walls, other than the odd crown bar or sprag. The ore is scraped to the mill holes by small (10 to 15 hp.) air-operated slusher hoists. No grizzlies are used over the chutes and care is taken to break up the big pieces beforehand. Fill usually is spread by tramming sand or waste in a one-ton car from the fill raise. Fill raises are driven parallel to the strike of the vein and are inclined at approximately 48°. In long stopes, where more than one fill raise is necessary, they are spaced about 300 ft. apart. It is sometimes necessary to stand square sets for a short distance each way under the brow of the fill raise. support needed increases and on the lower levels and in some wide stopes where closer support of the back is necessary, it has become standard practice to timber the stope with 12 by 12-in. timber. Rough timber sets consisting. of caps, tightly blocked to the back and supported on posts 7 ft. high, are placed at about 5 ft. intervals. These sets are generally salvaged from the lower breast before blasting and are used again on the upper slice after the fill has been placed. In general, two or three breasts may be broken down before mucking out and filling and the ground stands long enough to enable this to be done safely. On the lower levels and in certain wide stopes and in heavy ground, a more intermittent method must be used. Only one breast or even part of a breast can be blasted and the back must be timbered before the ore can be removed. In these cases, sill timbers 16 ft. long, supported at one end on posts from the fill and at the other end on pins inserted in holes drilled in the face, are used. Timber cribs 5 by 9 ft. built from the fill to the roof and tightly blocked to the back are used throughout the mine to reinforce both the timber sets and the square sets.

A number of measurements have been made on the vapor pressure of pure iron at 1600°C. Experiments were carried out by the transportation method in which a sample of iron is exposed in a furnace to a stream of pure argon, metered at a predetermined flow rate for a specified period of time. The vapor pressure was obtained from the weight loss of the sample. A detailed diagram of the apparatus used for the experiments is given in Fig. 1. It consisted of a horizontal molybdenum-wire-wound furnace fitted with a recrystallized alumina tube 1 1/8 in. internal diam. The boats, 1 by 3/16 by 1/8 in., were fired in argon at 1600°C to constant weight before use. After this treatment, subsequent heating of the boats to 1600°C gave little or no further change in weight, e.g. ±0.05 mg in 24 hr. The furnace and reaction tube were separately fed with argon from two independent flowmeters. These were connected to a common supply source via an argon purification furnace containing metallic titanium sponge at 700°C, and an anhydrone drying-tower. A rotary displacement-type meter was included in the gas train to provide a direct means of measuring the total volume of gas passed through the reaction tube. The material used was vacuum melted high-purity iron in the form of wire 2mm in diam. The following impurities were present in the iron: 0.008 pct C, 0.002 pct Si, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.008 pct S, 0.001 pct P, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.001 pct Cr, 0.006 pct Cu, and 0.001 pct Al. Samples consisting of three small pieces of this wire were laid end to end in a recrystallized alumina-combustion boat, and were separated by small fragments of alumina. The wire samples were then melted in argon to form spherical beads 2 to 3 mm in diam. After weighing, the boat with its contents was placed on the boat carrier and introduced into the cool end of the reaction tube. The entire furnace system was then flushed with argon for 30 min. At the end of this period, the flow of argon to both furnace and reaction tubes was adjusted to the desired level; then the boat was slid rapidly into the hot-zone of the reaction tube. After a known volume of gas had passed through the reaction tube, the boat was withdrawn quickly to the cool end of the furnace. When quite cool, the boat was removed from the fur-mace and placed in a desiccator for subsequent re-weighing. The semi-micro balance used in these experiments had a sensitivity of 0.005 mg. The above procedure was repeated at several flow rates within the range of 25 to 300 ml per min. The flow of argon in the annular space between the two tubes was at a rate of 300 ml per min in all experiments. During all the experiments the furnace temperature was maintained at 1600° ± 5°C by means of a temperature controller. The temperature of the reaction zone was measured with a Tinsley high precision disappearing filament pyrometer which was initially calibrated against a Pt-13 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple; the errors due to temperature measurements were within * 5°C. RESULTS Assuming that the iron vapor is in the monatomic state, the vapor pressure can be calculated from the weight loss of the sample and the volume of the carrier gas. The results obtained are plotted in Fig. 2 against the rate of flow of argon through the chamber containing liquid iron beads. At low flow rates, the thermal diffusion of iron gives an apparent high vapor pressure, but at high gas flow rates, the carrier gas is not saturated with the vapor, and therefore, low vapor-pressure values are obtained. The investigation reported herein was undertaken to obtain data to supplement those presented in an earlier paper,l particularly for longer times at a higher temperature. This information may further develop our knowledge of the mechanism of diffusion in substitutional solid solutions. Diffusion of solute atoms interstitially dissolved is not difficult to visualize: it can take place without much disturbance of the solvent atoms. The mechanism of diffusion of solute atoms substitutionally dissolved is not so easily understood. Many theories have been advanced. Rosen-hain,2,3 Frenkel,4 Smekal,5 Langmuir,3,6 Steigman, Shockley and Nix,' and Johnson8 all proposed theories to explain diffusion. Langmuir's proposed mechanism consisted of a simple cyclic interchange of atoms involving an interchange in lattice positions of four or more atoms. This mechanism, accepted by the author at the time of his previous publication,1 and apparently quite generally accepted, required a net exchange in positions of both solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers. In other words, the rate of diffusion of the solvent and solute atoms would be the same. That this cyclic interchange in lattice positions of solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers is the only true mechanism of diffusion is denied by the evidence presented in this paper. Experimental Procedure This modification of similar procedure1 will be outlined briefly. The method consisted of the following steps: I. A pure Muntz metal (60.6 per cent Cu, 0.1 per cent total impurities) that was almost all beta brass at 780°C. was chosen. 2. The brass was turned between centers in a lathe to a diameter of 0.5965 inches. 3. After the brass was cleaned, it was electroplated with pure copper to a diameter of about one inch. 4. The sample was heated slowly to 400°C. under reduced pressure and held at that temperature for 4 hr. to remove occluded gases. It was then cooled to room temperature. 5. The sample was heated to 780°C. ± 3°C. and held at that temperature for different lengths of time; then quenched. Samples were cut off each time after quenching. Metallographic samples 1/4 in. thick were removed at I hr., 6 hr., 24 hr., 96 hr. and 701 hr. After 96 and 701 hr. samples of about I in. were removed for X-ray analysis. 6. The metallographic samples were polished on the cross section and photomicrographs were taken. 7. The I-in. samples were polished and etched on both ends. With the aid of a microscope each was carefully mounted in a four-jaw chuck in a lathe, so that they could be accurately bored for an arbor. 8. Turnings were taken for each X-ray sample. After each set of turnings, the sample was heated in an oil bath for about 1/2 hr. at 300°C. It was then etched in 25

Almost every oil well drilled into limestone formations in Kansas is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion: to increase potential capacity of well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production; to shorten time required to produce recoverable oil; and to increase quantity of oil recovered ultimately from reservoir. Acid treating marked a forward step in the producing fields of Kansas; in fact, many old limestone fields that almost had reached their economic producing limit were "rejuvenated" with acid and their capacities to produce increased several times. It also caused a marked increase in the ultimate oil recovery of some old and nearly depleted fields of Kansas. The effect of the acid was due to the cleaning-out action by the acid at the face of the limestone, the enlargement of the small drainage channels, and the apparent penetration of the acid to previously undrained porous and saturated strata. Studies of the effects of acid were made in the Fairport field, three groups of wells in the El Dorado field and the Shutts field. Estimation of increased recoveries resulting from acid in these fields and groups of wells ranged from 1000 to 2400 bbI. per acre. Limestone structures that had been tested by drilling and found noncommercial were later completed as commerical oil-producing formations through the use of acid. The Kansas City formation, Valley Center field of Kansas, is an example. Increased oil production and revenue from the old fields justified the reconditioning of equipment, which in most cases had become in poor mechanical condition. The first treatment with hydrochloric acid of an oil well in Kansas was in October 1932, and by the end of 1937 almost 6000 wells had been treated. Many wells were treated more than once and the total number of treatments exceeded 8000 by the end of 1937. Approximately 12 3/4 million gallons of acid was required for these treatments. Of the two horizontal axes the longer is always taken as the b or macro-axis * and when orientated is parallel to the observer. The a or brachy-axis is the shorter of the two horizontal axes and is perpendicular to the observer. The length of the b axis is taken as unity and the lengths of the other axes are expressed in terms of it. The axial ratio for barite, for instance, is a : b : c = 0'815 : 10 : 131. The rate of coarsening (Ostwald ripening) of copper precipitate Particles in an a-iron matrix has been studied in three Fe-Cu alloys containing 2.3, 4.0, and 5.4 wt pct Cu in the temperature range 730° to 830°C. The kinetics of Ostwald ripening ohevs the law as deduced by Lifshitz and Wagner so that matrix diffusion controls the process. The equilibrium shape of the particles is that of rods with hemispherical caps, and is due to the BOTH Lifshitz and slyozov and wagner3 have recently solved the complex problem of determining the rate of coarsening of an assembly of precipitate particles. Both workers, although using somewhat different mathematical approaches, arrive at the same equation for the relation between the mean radius 7 of a distribution of spherical particles and the bulk solubility co, diffusivity D in the matrix, large anisotropy in the copper/a iron interfacial free energy (y,/y, = 4). A Lifshitz -Wagner equation, modified for both the nonsphericity of the diffusion field and the reformulation of the Gibbs-Thomson equation for the case of nonsphencal particles, is derived. Using the modified equation, the calculated values of the mean radius are smaller than those observed by a factor of about one -half. absolute temperature T, gas constant R, surface free energy y of the precipitate/matrix interface, and the time t of aging: where V, is the molar volume of the precipitate and v is a stoichiometric factor. Wagner's treatment is restricted to the case of spherical particles growing in a liquid matrix where strain energy is not a factor. The isothermul section of the Nb-Ti-Zr-O system at 1500°C was investigated using X-ray dzffraction and metallographic techniques. UP to 66.7 at. pct 0, the system contains nine four-phase regions. Tsopleths at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 55 at. pct 0 weye constructed. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the general shape of the quaternary equilibrium phase diagram of niobium, titanium, zirconium, and oxygen at 1500°C. The system was truncated at 66.7 at. pct. O., PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The Ti-Zr-O system was investigated in this laboratory.' The binary systems of interest have been compiled and discussed by anssen2 and Levin, McMurdie, and Ha11. Elliott4 has determined the Nb-O system by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. He shows the existence of three oxides, namely NbO, NbO2, and Nb2O5. At 1500°C the solubility of oxygen in niobium is about 4 at. pct. No solid solubility region is shown for either NbO or NbO2. EQUIPMENT The same equipment as that for the study of the Ti-Zr-O system was used. The X-ray diffraction patterns were analyzed with the help of the ASTM card set5 and NBS circulars.6 MATERIALS The niobium powder (99 pct pure), the titanium powder (99.6 pct pure), the niobium pentoxide, and the zirconium dioxide used in this study were purchased from the Fairmount Chemical Co., Newark, N.J. The zirconium powder (99.4 pct pure) was obtained from the Charles Hardy Co., Inc., N.Y. Reagent-grade titanium dioxide was purchased from the Matheson Co., Inc., Norwood, Ohio. The oxides were dried in air at 700°C for 24 hr before use. Though the materials used were not "hyper-pure," the impurities present do not affect the results (lattice parameters, phase boundaries), within the experimental accuracy. PROCEDURE Samples of the desired compositions were made up, in mole pct, from the materials listed above. In some cases the intermediate binary compounds, such as NbO and TiZrO4 were prepared beforehand and used in the preparation of the samples. This technique enabled equilibrium to be reached from two sides. The components of each sample were mechanically mixed in a mortar and pestle and pressed into 3/16-in. diam pellets. The pressures used in compacting were of the order of 50 to 100 x 103 psi. Sintering was accomplished by heating the samples in a tungsten crucible (3/4-in. high, %-in. diam, 1/8-in. wall, lid with XB-in. hole). The pellets were separated from each other and from the crucible by means of small spiral coils of tungsten wire placed between the stacked pellets and on the bottom of the crucible. The sintering time was from 4 to 12 hr at 1500°C under a vacuum of 6 x 101-5 to 1 x 10-6 mm of Hg. All samples were reground after the first or second heating repressed, and reheated. In most cases: equilibrium was obtained after the first heating, as the X-ray diffraction pictures after each heating remained unchanged. Quenching of the samples from 1500°C was at first only possible by allowing the crucible and its contents to lose heat by radiation. The temperature dropped from 1500° to 900°c in approximately 1 1/2 min, which was considered adequate when compared to the times used by other investigators to reach equilibrium in the temperature range of 1000°c and lower. Later, a new technique for faster quenching of the samples was cleveloped. This technique involved the removal of the samples from the crucible, whereupon they were quenched by coming in contact with the water-cooled copper base of the furnace. This manipulation was performed without breaking the vacuum. The sample pellets were placed on a tungsten wire rack inside the crucible. The wire rack passed through the hole in the crucible lid, where it was connected to a small nonmagnetic chain. The chain was fed to the side of the furnace by means of a brass rack which fitted between the body and lid of the furnace. ENGINEERING department problems of unravel- ling filing systems of reference data, detail drawings, magazine tear sheets, technical records, manufacturers' catalogs-and coordinating them with the information classification systems employed by the company library and other information services -are being solved in many cases by adopting a basic classification system such as that used by Sweet's Catalog Service and applying its classification and indexing methods to file or bookshelf. By this procedure the engineering department does away with the confusion, duplication, and conflict that exist between personal, department, and company library files. It establishes a pattern for regulating and distributing the potential information that piles up daily in the engineering department basket marked "Incoming."
