Arthur Jarman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—All designs for modern metallurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage

The idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size had been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Masch-inenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cylinders of the Oechelhauser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The engine was started in 1898, and, with a few improvements and alterations, is still working satisfactorily. This engine worked with astonishingly high effciency, considering the period. In order to devise a practicable soaking pit schedule for use at The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd.'s Hamilton Works, soaking pit heating temperatures, sooking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts were correlated with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Other variables such as total delays in the pit, rolling schedules, mill delays, and track times were also investigated. IN order to show an easily applied and accurate means of establishing soaking pit heating temperatures, soaking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts, these various factors are correlated herein with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Rolling practices have a considerable influence on the production capacity of a blooming mill. The maximum values of the torque, in particular, are of importance, since even instantaneous current peaks lead to the tripping of the motor by the overload relay and result in loss of mill time. The establishment of safe maximum drafts and accelerations for ingots of different sizes and of a soaking pit practice which would ensure a consistent and satisfactory plasticity of the metal is of considerable importance for increasing the efficiency of both the blooming mill and the soaking pits. The Bloom Mill Dept. of the Hamilton Works, The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd., is equipped with one 44 in. mill driven by a 7000 hp motor with the setting of the overload relay at 22.0 ka. The speed of rotation of the motor is regulated after the Ward-Leonard system. There are three basic speeds of 9.5, 28, and 47 rpm and a further possibility of increasing the speed by weakening the field. This last possibility is hardly ever used during practical operations. The rolling program of the blooming mill is varied, both in the size of the ingots to be handled and in the steel grades. The total tonnage handled by the mill is about 2,000,000 ingot tons per year. At the time of the investigation, the Bloom Mill Dept. was equipped with 22 soaking pits (6 regenerative, 14 bottom-fired, and 2 one-way top-fired pits) with a total bottom area of 2770 sq ft. The pits are fired with a blast furnace-coke oven gas mixture having a calorific value of 155 Btu per cu ft. The foregoing figures show that the production program was such as to impose the necessity of a most efficient usage of the available equipment. For this purpose, the operations of the 44 in. mill and of the soaking pits were investigated, and the results of the investigation were used as a basis for a revised soaking pit schedule and drafting practice. The plasticity of an ingot of a certain chemical composition when being rolled is determined mainly by the following factors: I—the ingot size, both thickness and width; 2—the length of the gas soak; and 3—the surface temperature. The first two factors determine the uniformity of the temperature distribution over the cross-section of an ingot. The third factor introduces the level of the heating of an ingot. The torque produced by an ingot being rolled is determined by the area of the metal displaced, its plasticity, and acceleration values. On the other hand, with shunt motors the torque is determined by the current. This can be assumed to be correct with only a small degree of error for compound motors with a relatively small effect of the series windings as long as the velocity is not regulated by weakening the field. Since the spread is relatively unimportant when compared to the width of an ingot and since it is also reduced several times during rolling by edging passes, the draft alone and not the area of the metal displaced may be taken into consideration with ingots of a similar size. It is therefore possible to determine the main features of the heating and drafting of an ingot by measuring the current and acceleration of the mill motor. After the acceleration has been taken into account, the amount of current will be an indication of how the motor responds to a heating and/or drafting practice and these practices can be adjusted in order to get the desired result. As peak currents are more likely when heavier ingots are rolled, the rolling of plate and slab ingots was investigated. Conditions prevailing when smaller ingots are rolled can be deduced from the results obtained on heavier ingots. All measurements were made when plain carbon grades under 0.15 pct C were rolled. The motor current, the voltage across the armature, and the rpm were recorded simultaneously on synchronized charts, Fig. 1, which moved with the speed of 6 in. per min. Each draft was recorded by a special observer. The rpm curve made it possible to establish the acceleration at any given moment. For purposes of correlation, the maximum current during a pass and the corresponding acceleration were used. The charts made it possible to establish the position of the roller's lever at any given moment as well as the total time of a pass. The slab ingots were divided into three groups (28x35, 28x45, and 27Mx53 in. ingots) and each group was investigated separately. Since they account for most of the current peaks, only flat passes were used for purposes of correlation, a total of 1373 having been investigated.

The annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary was held on February 19, at 10 a. m. The president, Mrs. Sidney Jennings, said in her greeting "it is a matter of congratulation that during the past year when the demands upon women for work of all kinds has been so large our membership has grown from the 50 enrolled at the first meeting a year ago to over 300 today. Some women, when. asked to join the organization, say that they are doing so much work in other ways that they have no time for work in a new organization, but the director for Canada struck the right note in her report when she told us of the splendid work the wives of mining engineers are doing in Canada, as individuals and as leaders and members of various organizations doing patriotic work. We do not want to divert such women from the work they are now doing, but we do want them to enroll as members of the Woman's Auxiliary and let us know what they are doing, that they play give inspiration to others." Reports were made by the directors of the following sections: Canada, Chicago, Colorado, Columbia, New York, Puget Sound and St. Louis, in some of which sections excellent progress has been made in food conservation, foreign war relief, including the adoption of fatherless French children, and in work for our own engineering regiments. These reports were read, accepted, and placed on file. The reports of the corresponding secretary, of the recording secretary, and of the treasurer, were read, accepted, and placed on file. Various amendments to the Constitution were proposed and accepted, and copies of the Constitution, as amended, will be mailed to all the members of the Woman's Auxiliary.

Although the Western bentonite industry has grown rapidly, it is facing major challenges to sustained growth. The fundamental penalty of costly overland transportation to both domestic markets and to US seaports is of increasing importance; as both substitute materials and foreign bentonites present more formidable competition in the historic market areas of drilling muds, foundry sands, and iron ore pelletizing; and as foreign demand grows more rapidly than domestic demand. The Western bentonite industry is facing these challenges by altering its transportation patterns, by upgrading of products, and by emphasizing customer service and stringent quality control.

With each weight increase per lineal yard has come greater difficulty in making a product that would successfully withstand all tests that modern rails must meet. With these facts in mind, and with a sincere desire to produce a rail whose service in track would be satisfactory in all respects, the steelmaker was quick to realize that all of the factors entering into his process would have to be more closely controlled. Control of rail-steel slags was recognized as one of the most important of many interdepending factors. The object of slag control is to hold the slag compositions within a range that gives the best results with respect to economy of production, uniformity of analysis, and quality of the finished rails. The most important component of the slag from the standpoint of these production and quality factors is the ferrous oxide content. THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jefferson County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons. The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation's total annual production, and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country.

George E. Collins, Nacoochee, Ga. (communication to the Secretary): The results tabulated below were obtained at the Reynolds mill, White county, Ga. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

FOR the purpose of the following discussion the word "research" is interpreted as including all phases of development work on methods of manufacture, metallurgical characteristics, and uses of iron and steel. Research in the iron and steel industry then includes both plant re- search and laboratory research. Since iron and steel came into being, the steel consumer's plant and the steel producer's plant have been important factors in the development of the steel industry. Good minds have always been associated with both consumer and producer plants, so marked progress was made in the industry even when these were the only types of research and development groups in action.

AT THE dinner at the Cosmos Club in Washington, tendered to Herbert Hoover on Jan. 5, on the occasion of his retirement from the presidency of the Federated American Engineering Societies, he made an informal speech in which he pointed out not only the unique position which the engineer now occu-pies by virtue of the new Federated Societies but also the opportunity that is thus presented for national service. In this connection and in pointing out some of the reasons for the present economic maladjust-ment, Mr. Hoover said in part: This body has entered upon a path of public serv-ice that is unique in the whole United States. The engineer has devoted himself all these years to the upbuilding of the material values of the United States. He has done that effectively more effectively than-has been accomplished in any other of the great countries of the world. The birth of this society marks the evolution of the engineer into an interest in public affairs. With his intelligence, his experience and training and the unique knowledge that he possesses not only of the material but the intangible values among our people, he is now organized so that his united voice may become heard outside of his profession. We have probably 175,000 engineers in our country, representing an intellectual possibility for service possessed by no other group. It is therefore an augury of real social development when the engineers of the United States join together for purposes of public service.

The direct determination of the stabilized performance behavior of low capacity, slowly stabilizing gas wells is extremely time-consuming and wasteful of gas. From both field experience and theoretical considerations, a test procedure has been evolved by which the stabilized hack pressure behavior of such gas wells can he predicted without having to revert to long time flow tests. The method consists of using the isochrona1 test procedure to establish the slope of the back pressure curve, "n", and the short time variation of the performance coeficient, "C", with time. From this short time transient flow data and theoretical considerations, the value of C at large times can he established. By assuming the radius of drainage of a well to be half the distance between wells, one can calculate the stabilization time for various well spacing patterns. Once the stabilization time for a given .spacing has been determined, the value of C can be calculated and the stabilized back-pressure curve can he. establbrhed. The calculated perfortnance coefficient as a function of tinze was cotnpared to the experintentally measured values for a number of gas wel1.e. The deviation of the calc~*lated from the cxperimental res1tlt.s vary depending on the set of short time experimental points used to evabrate the parcrttzeters of the equation. The longer the tirne far the flow test data user1 in the calculations, the better was the agreement with the experimental results. The time necessary to obtain this data from well tests varies consitlerably, depending on the physical natrcre oj the rt3scrvoir under consideratiot~. INTRODUCTION For many years, the U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7' has served as a guide for testing and evaluating the performance of gas wells by means of the back-pressure method. The back-pressure performance of a gas well is expressed by the following equation: Q~ CW-W.........(I) where the characteristics of the back-pressure equation are determined by C, the performance coefficient, and n, the exponent which corresponds to the slope of the straight line when Q and {P* - PN2) are plotted on logarithmic paper. Q is gas flow rate at standard conditions, and P, and P, are equalized and flowing bottom-hole pressures, respectively. Prior to the development of the back-pressure tcst, the "open flow" capacity method of testing a well was common. By this method, the wells were flowed wide open to the air and the flow rate measured. Such procedure was wasteful of gas and did not provide information on the deliverability of the gas to the pipe line. Monograph 7 Procedure The back-pressure method of testing wells was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Although much has been learned regarding the laws of the flow of gas through porous formations, the original development of the back-pressure relationship was based entirely on empirical methods. The back-pressure behavior provides the engineer with information essential in predicting the future development of a field. It permits him to calculate the deliverability of gas into a pipe line at predetermined line pressures, to design and analyze gas gathering lines, to determine the spacing and number of wells to he drilled during the development of a field to meet gas purchasers' requirements, and to solve many other technical and economic problems. As described in Monograph 7, the flow-after-flow method of back-pressure testing, when applied to fast stabilizing and usually high capacity wells, correctly characterized the behavior of the well. However, as the value of the gas at the wellhead increased, small capacity gas wells having slow rates of stabilization became economically operable. The flow-after-flow method of testing could not be used to describe the behavior of these slowly stabilizing wells. The procedure of Rawlins and Shellhardtl for establishing the back-pressure behavior of a gas well was based on the rcquirement that the data be obtained under stabilized flow conditions; that is, that C is constant and does not vary with time. C depends on the physical properties of the reservoir, the location, extent and geometry of the drainage radius, and the properties of the flowing fluid. In a highly permeable formation, only a very short period of time is required for the well to reach a stabilized condition, and, consequently, the requirements for the test procedure described in Monograph 7 are met. 'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

Protective coatings based on the formation of a surface coating of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were applied to the nickel-base superalloys IN 100, SEL 15, and U-700. Coated specimens were exposed to an oxidizing environment at temperatures between 1600 and 2200 F for times up to 1000 hr. The oxidation resistance and stability of the coating were evaluated by weight gain measurements, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction study of surface oxides and coating. The composition of the coating and diffusion zone was determined by electron microprobe traverse of samples before and after high-temperature exposure. Intermediate phases formed in the coating and diffusion zone were identified by X-ray diffraction in situ and after electrolytic extraction. The outer coating was found to consist of the inter-metallic compound, NiAl, while the diffusion zone contained MC, M23C6 or M6C carbides, and a phase in a matrix of NiAl + Nidl. Oxidation resulted in formation of an A1203 n'ch scale containing some Tz02. Depletion of aluminum during oxidation resulted in degradation of the outer coating to Ni3Al and the nickel alloy matrix. Diffusion of aluminum into the base metal was found to be slight and did not influence coating life significantly. The o formed in the diffusion zone during coating decomposed during elevated-temperature exposure to form stable carbide phases characteristic of the base metal. Diffusion zone phase changes were found to have no effect on the life of the aluminide coating in the oxidizing envzron?nent. THE oxidation resistance of many high-strength nickel-base superalloys is inadequate for extended exposure at temperatures above about 1600°F. In addition, some applications for these materials require that they be exposed to environments containing sulfur compounds and sodium salts which can cause surface attalk known as sulfidation or hot corrosion. In order to provide the necessary corrosion resistance to the high-strength alloys, protective coatings based on an aluminizing process have been developed. These processes, usually based on a pack cementation technique, result in the formation of a NiAl-rich outer coating layer either during the coating process or by a subsequent diffusion treatment. The performance of the aluminide coatings is affected by interactions between the coating layer and the base metal both during the coating process and during subsequent exposure at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these interactions is required to guide the development of coatings capable of longer life and improved reliability. Goward et al.' recently reported the metallurgical factors which influence coating per- formance on MAR-M200. The present work is concerned with correlating the interactions and performance of coating compositions on several representative materials. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Three cast nickel-base superalloys which are used for turbine buckets in air-breathing engines were studied: IN 100, U-700, and SEL 15. Their chemical compositions are given in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-induction-melted and cast to slabs approximately 0.3 in. thick from which rectangular specimens 0.25 by 0.5 by 1 in. were machined. Coating Procedures. The machined specimens were coated by CODEP processes which were developed at the author's laboratory. These are based on pack cementation in various media to deposit either aluminum or aluminum in combination with titanium. The coating process which deposits only aluminum is designated CODEP-C, while the CODEP-D process deposits titanium in combination with aluminum. The CODEP-D process was applied only to IN 100. Both CODEP processes are applied at 1950" or 2000°F for 4 hr without need for a subsequent diffusion treatment. An outer coating about 1 mil in thickness is produced by these processes. Test Procedures. Coated specimens were exposed to static oxidation for periods ranging from 24 to 1000 hr at temperatures of 1600" to 2200°F. Terminal weight gain measurements and visual examination were used to evaluate oxidation resistance. including oxide spalling and coating failure. Both as-coated and exposed specimens of each alloy were studied by metallographic examination, electron microprobe analysis (EMA), and X-ray diffraction analysis either of the exposed surfaces or of phases extracted from the coating and diffusion zone. RESULTS As-Coated Condition. The microstructures of as-coated conditions were generally similar, irrespective of base materials or the particular coating process. They are typified by IN 100 coated by CODEP-D as shown in Fig. 1. The predominately single-phase outer layer, area A, Fig. 1, was identified by X-ray diffraction as the intermetallic compound NiA1. The NiAl zone extended inward to the original base metal interface. The diffusion zone, area B, Fig. 1, included carbide phases, a lamellar phase oriented perpendicular to the base metal surface, and a matrix phase consisting of a mixture of NiAl and Ni3Al. The phases in the diffusion zone were electrolytically extracted using a 10 pct HCl in methanol solution at approximately 1.3 amp per sq cm. The extracted phases were found to be M6C, MC, or M=C6 carbides and o as shown in Table I1 for each of the alloys. The d spacings from a typical diffraction pattern are

THE Clinton group of the Silurian holds the red or fossiliferous ore; its outcrops have been mapped by the State or U. S. Geological Survey. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama. There are places where it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step, faults bring up the ore in three or four separate ridges practically parallel. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. In examining some bore holes made in drilling for oil, the writer found the Clinton group continuing under the Warrior coal field wherever the drill has gone deep enough. It demonstrates the possibility of a source for red ore not seriously thought of until lately. The following bore holes made principally for oil, given in Bulletin No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 feet. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in section 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. The hole was continued by diamond drill from here. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton.

In a recent communication14 we have reported on the kinetics of the reactions of zirconium with O2, N2 and H2 as a function of the time, temperature and pressure variables. A systematic study was made and the results correlated with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions. This paper will present a similar study for titanium. Titanium and zirconium are members of the IV group of the periodic table and possess many similar physical and chemical properties as a result of their similar electronic configuration for the outer electrons. The two metals are relatively inert to both gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures the metals become active and react readily with the common gases including O2, N2 and H2 which are of interest in this study. A study of the kinetics of these gas-metal reactions is of interest for three reasons: (1) to understand the rate of reaction of titanium and its role in the behavior of high temperature alloys; (2) to understand the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of titanium; and (3) to correlate the data with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions and crystal structure predictions. Literature Survey Several review papers8 and books4243 exist on the preparation and properties of titanium and its alloys. THE METAL Titanium has, at room temperature, a hexagonal lattice of the zinc type. Hagg19 gives a value of 2.953A for the (a) axis, a value of 4.729 for the (c) axis and a density of 4.427 at 20°C. Burgers and Jacobs6 have observed the transformation of the hexagonal to the body-centered cubic structure at 880°C and have established a value of 3.31 for the cube edge and a density of 4.31. TITANIUM-OXYGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 using a pressure change method have studied the reaction at temperatures of 742° and 1000°C and for a pressure of one-fifth of an atmosphere. The probabilities for reaction are calculated from kinetic theory and they report a value of 10-5 for O2 at 1000°C and 10-6 at 740°C. The titanium-oxygen system has been investigated by Ehrlich.10,11 Five phases are observed. Between (TiO2 and TiO1.90) an alpha-phase, consisting ofarutile lattice, is found. A beta-phase is observed between (TiO1.80 and TiO1.70). A gamma-phase is homogeneous between (TiO1.56 and TiO1.46) and has a structure of the corundum type. The delta-phase exists between TiO1.25 and TiO0.6 and has a sodium chloride structure. From TiO0.42 to Ti the metal structure is observed. The surface oxide films have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.20 The rutile structure is observed in the temperature range studied, 300 to 700°C. Three crystalline modifications of TiO2 exist: rutile and anatase which are tetragonal and brookite which has an orthorhombic structure. Anatase is reported36 to exist in two forms: I and II. Anatase II changes to anatase I at 642°C. Anatase I is stable up to 915°C where rutile becomes the stable modification. At 1300°C rutile transforms to brookite which melts at 1900°C. The monoxide, TiO, may be prepared from the dioxide by high temperature reduction with carbon or magnesium. Its melting point is 1750°C. TITANIUM-NITROGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 report that at 1000°C a linear rate law is observed. The probability of reaction is given as 10-8 at 1000°C. Fast12 has studied the solubility of nitrogen and its effect on the mechanical properties of the metal. The crystal structure of TiN has been shown by several workers2'21'44 to follow the sodium chloride structure. However, the calculated density is found to differ from the pycnometric value. This is studied by Brager3,4 in detail. He has suggested that the titanium sites in the lattice are only partially filled at low temperatures. As the temperature of preparation is raised the vacant sites become occupied which expands the lattice and increases the hardness and density. An (a) value of 4.22Å is given for room temperature. TITANIUM-HYDROGEN The solubility and the crystal structures observed in this system have been reviewed in a recent book by Smith.40

IN the classical paper1 of Mehl and Rhines entitled "The Rates of Diffusion in the Alpha Solid Solutions of Copper", the authors state: "It has been mathematically demonstrated that the treatment of the data as though the diffusion were taking place between two flat plates instead of radially in a cylinder has no appreciable effect upon the results. Were the bars of a much smaller diameter, a modification of the analytical treatment would have been required." Unfortunately, the errors in the reported concentrations are much too large to neglect, as shown in the results below. A planar treatment of diffusion data assumes that the reference planes separated by a nominal distance (AX) have identical areas. An adjustment must be made on the concentration data should the successive diffusion planes differ in area. The Mehl-Rhines' diffusion samples were cylindrical with copper electroplated onto copper-based alloys. Successive surface areas through which diffusion occurs are in the ratio ri/r1, where ri is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the i th shell to which the host (alloy) atoms diffuse, and r1 is the radial distance between the center of the sample and the center of the innermost (i = 1) experimentally reported shell from which the alloy atoms diffuse. Hence, ri/r1 (i = 1, ..., n layers) is a dimensionless correction factor to be multiplied by the reported concentration data before planar-data analysis is attempted. In the forty-seven samples reported, the original interface between the copper alloys and the electroplated copper was located at a mean distance of 8.255 mm from the center of the samples. The successive layers, machined off the samples, were approximately 0.0762 mm thick. The distance (xi) at which concentration (ci) was reported was always a distance measured with respect to the original interface, that is, with respect to the fixed distance of 8.255 mm. Hence, the as yet undiscovered Kirkendall Effect was precompensated. The values of ri and r1 are therefore given by ri = 8.255 + xi and Y, = 8.255 + x,. The illustrative table below lists the position xi (mm), ri (mm), the value of ri/r1, the reported concentration (ci) in weight percent (only valid for radial analysis of data), and the corrected concentration [c'i = (ri/r1)ci] in weight percent (only valid for planar analysis of data). Similar tables can be constructed for the remaining forty-six samples. The corrected data can be used to re-evaluate the diffusion coefficients for the reported systems.

Garth Crosby has written an excellent geologic description of the deposits surrounding the Gem stocks in the Coeur d'Alene district. The ore deposits in the area of the Gem stocks may hold the key to the age and mineralization history of the entire Coeur d'Alene district. A recent isotopic study10 of the Coeur d'Alene district in this laboratory illustrates that a classical geologic interpretation of these deposits, with its implications for the whole district, may lead to erroneous conclusions. For this reason it seems pertinent to submit a summary of these results and an interpretation of the mineralizing history of the Coeur d'Alene districts. Pitchblende from the Sunshine mine has been dated as 1100-1200 million years (m.y.) by Kerr and Kulp,11 and Eckelmann and Kulp.12 This pitchblende is known to predate the major sulphide introduction in the Sunshine mine, but it clearly follows the metamorphism and folding of the Belt Series. Recently, Goldich (personal communication) dated sericite from the Belt rocks as 1200 m.y. by the potassium-argon method. This date establishes a minimum Belt age if the sericite is of metamorphic origin and a maximum age if detrital. The Belt Series, therefore, is not latest Precambrian. Lead isotope ratios of galenas have been measured and model ages calculated by Bate, et all3 for the Sunshine mine, Farquhar and Cummingl4 or the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, and Cannonl6,18 for a few other deposits in the district. Galenas from similar deposits in Southern British Columbia have been measured by Bate, et al,23 Farquhar and Gumming,11 and Wanless and Leech." The new work in this laboratory includes leads from ten widely scattered mines north and south of the Osburn fault, and through a vertical distance of over 5000 ft (Star mine). Included in this group are the Hercules, Sunset, and Mountain Goat mines, which are adjacent to the Gem stocks. In addition, galenas from stringers which cut the Gem stocks in the Success and Sunrise mines and the Hercules hanging wall dike in the lower western portion of the Hercules mine, were included in the study. All of the above leads, except one, give model ages of 1300-1400 m.y. for the time of segregation from the parent material. The concordance of the common lead and U-Pb ages, the great horizontal and vertical uniformity of the lead ratios, the sulphur ratios of two Sunshine mine galenas and three galenas from the Edith, Page, and Hercules mines indicating average crustal sulphur, and the U23/Pb204 ratio inferred for the original lead environment, indicate that the entire mineralization of the Coeur d'Alene-British Columbia base metal belt was derived from a deep source and emplaced in the Precambrian. One sample of galena from sulphide stringers cutting the North Gem stock at the Sunrise Prospect mine gave a modern (i.e., Tertiary) lead ratio. This mine is located at the northern tip of the stock. The presence of modern lead suggests mobilization of some rock lead during the intrusion of the Gem stocks and their outliers. Larsen et al.l8 have dated the Gem stocks as Tertiary by the lead alpha method. If Coeur d'Alene mineralization was genetically related to Tertiary magma formation and intrusion
