The diffusivity of carbon (0.1 wt pct C) in Fe-Nz alloys (0 to 100 pct Ni) has been determined for the temperature range 860° to 1100°C. As a function of nickel content, the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 pct Ni (the maximum diffusivity being about 1.3 times that in the absence of nickel); the activation energy has a maximum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The difference between the minimum activation energy and that in iron is about 3000 cal pev g-atom; Do has a minimum between 40 and 50 pct Ni and a maximum between 80 and 90 pct Ni. The results cannot be rationalized by an approximate thermodynamic treatment. THE diffusivity of carbon has been determined in a number of iron alloys over a limited concentration range. It seemed desirable to investigate a system which allows an extended range of alloy composition within a single-phase region. The Fe-Ni system is ideal in this respect, in that all alloys from 100 pct Fe to 100 pct Ni are fee in a convenient temperature range.&apos; The carbon diffusivity was determined by a decar-burization method. The experimental procedure was identical with that used to determine the diffusivity of carbon in y Fe-Co alloys.2 The experimental data are given in Table I. A small correction (order of a few percent) has been made to the measured carbon loss to correct for the carbon lost from the ends of the cylinders.&apos; Since the diffusivity of carbon varies with carbon content the measured diffusivity is an average value for a carbon content between zero (surface) and that at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization periods. In making the correction in D to 0.1 wt pct C it is assumed that the measured D corresponds to the arithmetical mean of the carbon content at the surface and at the center of the sample at the end of the decarburization period.3 Since this correction is small (<4 pct in D) and since for our decarburization times the changes in carbon content at the center of the sample was small the mean carbon content could have been taken as half the initial value. It is further assumed that the change in D with carbon content for the alloys is the same as that for the diffusion of carbon in iron. From the data of Wells, Batz, and Mehl4 and of smith5 the correction of D from the mean carbon content to 0.1 wt pct C is 0.3 (0.1 - mean wt pct C). The results for iron are given in Ref. 2. Within the experimental error log Do.l%C for each alloy is a linear function of 1/T; the constants for the equation determined by the method of least squares are given in Table I. The deviations of the experimental points from the least-squares line are of the order of 2 pct in D. A comparison of our results for the diffusivity of carbon in nickel with those of other investigations is shown in Fig. 1. The lower curve in Fig. 1 is a linear extrapolation of values calculated* from the equation of Diamond6 for the relaxation time (temperature range 100° to 500°C). The results indicate a small increase in the activation energy over the temperature range 100° to 1400°C; however, it is difficult to say whether the change in Q is real or experimental error. Certainly the change in Q is less than the variation of 5 kcal per g-atom in the diffusivity of carbon in a iron.6 The experimental data for all the alloys are plotted in Fig. 2. As a function of nickel content the diffusivity has a maximum near 60 wt pct Ni at all temperatures investigated and possibly a minimum between 80 and 90 wt pct Ni for temperatures below 1000°C. The activation energy, Q, and log Do are plotted as a function of the nickel content in Fig. 3. Due to the limited temperature range of our experiments neither Q nor Do can be determined precisely; the activation energies appear to be consistent to ±0.3 kcal per g-atom; however the deviation from the absolute values may be considerably larger, see Table II. The Do values probably have little significance. POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

In 1938, Kanter&apos; revealed that the steady-state creep rate of low-carbon iron alloys could be correlated by an activation energy expression, where the activation energy for creep, Qc, was found equal to about 90.0 kcal per mole for most of the alloys investigated. He suggested that creep at high temperatures might be controlled by some sort of solid self-diffusion process since the value of Qc was about equal to the known value for self-diffusion, Qd. Correlations were not further attempted along these lines until many years later, when new evidence2-8 was presented suggesting that Qc = Qd for many metals. This equality now appears to be established for ten metals (Al, Pb, Ni, Mg, Cd, In, a Fe, y Fe, Cu, and Au). This experimental fact prompted several investigators to postulate various mechanisms of dislocation motion which would yield an activation energy for creep equal to that for self-diffusion.7-9 Possibly the most accepted theory is that based on dislocation climb7 where a dislocation is envisioned to surmount a barrier by an atom-vacancy exchange process, thereby "climbing" from one slip plane to another. Such a model would suggest that the steady-state creep rate, i, should be directly proportional to the rate of self-diffusion, D, for a given creep stress. In order to more clearly reveal the relationship between creep and diffusion, and to eventually determine the correct model, it would be desirable to obtain data showing correlations between i and D, rather than with a comparison of the temperature coefficients, Q. It has been known for some time that the self-diffusivity of iron atoms is greatly decreased when body-centered-cubic (a) iron transforms to face-centered-cubic (y) iron. This has been ascribed to the more close-packed structure of y iron. The diffusivity ratio at the transition temperature is Da/Dy =350. Correlations of creep data for a and y iron5 reveal that the creep rates under a given stress at the transition temperature differ by about the same ratio (ea/ey 2 200). It would be difficult to reconcile these results on any other basis than that the diffusivity of atoms probably controls creep of iron in some very direct way. No other published data on other allotropic metals appear currently available for further checking such a possible correlation between i and D. Thallium transforms from a hexagonal close-packed (a) structure to a body-centered-cubic (ß) structure at 230°C (503°K) and the self-diffusivities of the two structures have been determined by shirn.10 His results are plotted in Fig. 1 where it will be noted that Dß/Da = 25 at the transition temperature. The torsional deformation of aluminum and magnesium crystals is investigated, with particular reference to the dependence of proportional limit on crystal orientation. The proportional limit is found to be governed by the average value of the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip systems, but the proportional limit does not strictly obey a critical-resolved-shear-stress law. The behavior of a cylindrical single crystal stressed in tension is well known: plastic flow begins when the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip system reaches a critical value. There is much less understanding of the effect of torsion on such a crystal and on the way in which the critical-resolved-shear-stress law should be applied to torsional deformation. In the present paper particular attention is paid to the dependence of plastic yielding on crystal orientation and lesser attention to the mechanism of flow after yielding has occurred. New work on aluminum and magnesium crystals is presented, and previous results obtained in this laboratory on magnesium1 are re-examined. STRESS DISTRIBUTION The problems involved in torsional deformation of single crystals are due entirely to the complexity of the stress distribution. In tension, if loading conditions are perfect, the shear stress on any particular slip plane is completely uniform over the entire area of that plane. In torsion, on the other hand, the stress on any selected plane in a particular direction varies not only from center to edge of the specimen but also around its perimeter. It is convenient to express the stress at any point in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface of a cylindrical specimen on a plane normal to the axis and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. At point P of Fig. 1 this stress acts in the direction of axis 2 and is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. This stress can be resolved on any chosen slip system, and details are given in the Appendix. Let P be the point on the specimen surface where the stress is to be evaluated; P is defined by its angular distance A from an arbitrary reference line through 0 normal to the axis. his line is usually taken as the direction of incidence of the X-ray beam used to determine the crystal orientation.) THOSE of us who have been following rock drilling work for the last 15 or 20 years can recall some of the problems that were encountered with the old piston type of rock drill and the solid steel which it used. There was frequent trouble in keeping a straight hole in badly broken ground when using the ordinary four- point bit that had a flare on the wings of about 14". The drill steel, when pounding down its hole, would follow the line of least resistance and draw away from the desired line when it encountered a weak side in the ground through which it was drilling. Some would overcome the difficulty by making long winged bits to prevent the steel crowding over; this would relieve the troubles to a great extent. There was trouble with the rifling of drill holes and inability to drill round holes in some ground. The cure for these ills was to use the "X" bit, rather than the crossbit. The "2" bits were brought out in an effort to make it easier to drill a round hole in bad ground. Most of these troubles were before the days when the mechanical drill sharpener was in as common use as it is today. It was not until the introduction of the Leyner type of rock drill, requiring hollow steel that the users of rock drills found themselves confronted with more difficult prob- lems than they had ever encountered before with drill steel because the steel had to stand more severe service.

HOLDING the annual dinner-dance of the Institute at the Waldorf-Astoria had become such a tradition that there was widespread regret when it became known that the demolition of the building to make way for a huge office structure would perforce bring to an end the long and enjoyable series of gatherings our Institute had held there. This year the . Commodore was the place at which it was held and the commuters on the New York Central and the New Haven railroad systems, at least, found it a more convenient place for them. Except for the famous "Hoover" dinner, which will probably set a mark for all time, it was the largest dinner the Institute held, 1000 being present, and it taxed the facilities of the hotel to the utmost.

I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability.

In my original paper, Piping and Segregation in Steel Ingots, I pointed out1 among other things that, in view of the slighter stretching (virtual expansion) of the crust, and greater opportunity for sagging, there should be less piping in broad than in narrow ingots, and less in slowly-cooled ingots, e.g., those cast in pre-heated sand molds, than in those which cool quickly, e.g., those cast in iron molds. A. A. Stevenson said that neither of these predictions agreed with his own experience. In particular, in a picture which he showed of a wide and of a narrow ingot cast from the same ladleful of steel: the wide ingot had certainly piped much more deeply than the narrow one. At the time I did not see the explanation of these discrepancies, but further reflection makes it evident. One of the most important elements in determining the depth of the pipe is the degree of " top-lag," that is, the degree to which the solidification of the top of the ingot lags behind that of the bottom. Through this lagging the steel of the upper part of the ingot is able to run down and fill the pipe below as fast as it forms. To the importance of this lagging I called attention in my original paper.&apos; Sand us. Iron Molds.—If we compare two like ingots, one cast in an iron and the other in a sand mold, we see that the top-lag is much greater in the former than in the latter, because in the former the lower part of the ingot is cooling off fast while the metal is running into the upper part. F. D. Richardson—The authors are to be congratulated on this further contribution to our knowledge of the thermodynamics of the interaction between sulphur and carbon and silicon in liquid iron. As the authors state, the influence of carbon and silicon on the activity coefficient of sulphur in liquid iron is clearly of great importance in the blast furnace, since it must cause a three to fourfold improvement in the partition of sulphur between slag and metal. The influence of increasing temperature in further increasing the activity coefficient of the sulphur in the metal in the blast furnace by increasing the carbon content is also of interest. This effect, however, is probably only part of the reason for the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing temperature. Other contributing factors are the lowering of the oxygen potential in the presence of carbon by increasing temperature and the probable increase in the activity coefficient of the lime in the slag for the same reason. The former of these effects, which works via the (CaO) + [S] = (CaS) + [O] equilibrium, might possibly account for a 70 pct improvement in the sulphur partition and the latter might give a further 50 pct improvement. C. Sherman—I would like to compliment the authors on their very careful research. If I may, I would like to show results of calculations on the carbon-sulphur-iron system similar to the ones that were shown in our paper for the silicon-sulphur-iron system. For Fe-S-C ternary system k=PHgs/PH2 x 1/(f1°) (f2°) (%S) where fs = sulphur activity coefficient fs&apos; = fs for Fe-S system of equal pct S f3° = f2/f2 for Fe-S-C ternary system This same analysis has been used on other systems, but the results shown in fie.- 7 are for carbon and silicon. L. S. Darken—I would like to make two brief comments in addition to complimenting the authors on an apparently very precise and accurate investigation. The first is that the present work is in agreement with a calculation by Larsen and myself." Our calculation (much less precise than the present work) was based on: (1) Unpublished work on the sulphur content of molten iron (1.5 pct at 1500°C) in equilibrium with graphite and an iron sulphide slag; (2) the distribution coefficient of sulphur between slag and carbon-free liquid iron. We expressed the result in a form equivalent to log 7. = 0.18 [%C] which gives an activity coefficient (?s.) of sulphur only slightly higher than the authors find and certainly within the precision of the earlier work. My second comment concerns the correlation of the thermodynamic findings with atomistics. A rough pic- ture of the atomic arrangement in the liquid solution is rather easily conceived for this particular liquid solution containing iron, carbon, and sulphur. Carbon has a very much stronger affinity for iron than for sulphur. Hence we may conclude that a sulphur atom will but seldom be adjacent to a carbon atom—since this would be a position of high energy. From the metallic radii of iron and carbon we know that six iron atoms pack neatly around one carbon atom. Thus each carbon atom in retaining this shell of iron atoms (which latter may not be replaced by sulphur on account of the high energy requirement) decreases the available positions for each sulphur atom by six. Hence each atomic percent of carbon decreases the equilibrium sulphur content by 6 pct (of itself). Or, at low concentration each atomic percent of carbon increases the activity coefficient of sulphur by 6 pct. This is in good agreement with the observed increase (6 or 7 pct at low carbon content). It is indeed gratifying to find a case where, by such simple reasoning, quantitative agreement is found between precise data and the modern picture of the atomistics of the metallic state. J. P. Morris (authors&apos; reply)—We would like to point out that there is an error in the equation on p. 322 of the paper. The third equation should read: ½S2 (gas) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas) The authors wish to thank everyone for the interest they have shown in the paper. In regard to the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing the temperature, Dr. Richardson is correct in stating that the cause can be attributed only in part to the increase in activity coefficient of sulphur resulting from the rise in carbon plus silicon content of the metal with rise in temperature. However, this factor is probably an important one. The results of one experiment, performed since this report was written, indicate that at a constant temperature the addition of silicon to a melt saturated with carbon causes an increase in the activity coefficient of sulphur even though the carbon solubility is lowered. In this test, 2.5 pct silicon was added to a melt saturated with carbon and maintained at 1400°C. Although the carbon content dropped from 4.85 to 4.1 pct, the activity coefficient of sulphur was increased by about 20 pct.

Surrounded by a thickly settled farming country, from which to draw native labor, within easy distance of anthracite and bituminous coal, with ores and limestone near at hand, and with the Susquehanna River as a never-failing water supply, Harrisburg has advantages for manufacturing which warrant the investment of the capital that has already been made, and has a future as a manufacturing city second only to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. THE PENNSYLVANIA STEEL COMPANY, L. S. BENT, SUPERINTENDENT. The works of this company, the largest in Harrisburg, lie between the Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia and Reading Railroads, on. the Pennsylvania Canal, and are essentially devoted to the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails. Capital stock, $2,000,000; invested in business, $5,000,000; wages per month, $80,000; employs 2000 men; capacity, 100,000 tons of rails per year, which is being increased to 130,000 tons. The plant, as it now stands, comprises five Bessemer converters, two 7-ton and three 8-ton converters, two 15-ton open-hearth furnaces in operation, and two 30-ton open-hearth furnaces in course of construction, one blooming mill, one rail mill, seven steam hammers, two blast furnaces in operation, two blast furnaces in course of construction, foundry, pattern $hop, machine shop, blacksmith shop, and frog shop, and merchant mill in course of construction. The gas-lift is a comparatively recent development in the Oklahoma and Kansas fields. It was used to some extent in the old Dilworth field several years ago, but the first extensive installations were made in the Tonkawa and Garber fields in Oklahoma early in the year 1926. Compressor Equipment During the early development of the system, the equipment used generally consisted of small tandem compressors of about 250 cu. ft. per min. displacement, driven by automotive-type gas engines, using a short belt drive. These compressors were first installed at the individual wells largely as an experiment. After the experimental installations had proved the method a success, it was considered economically advisable to centralize the compressor equipment in strategically located stations. However, as the information in regard to "gas-lift flowing life" was anything but definite, and the most optimistic estimates in regard to it did not exceed six months, portability of equipment was still the first consideration in the minds of many operators, who continued to install srnall semi-portable com-pressors in their centralized stations. As electric power became available in the fields, the electric motor came rapidly into use as the prime mover for the small compressors. The operating cost of this motor is greater than that of the automotive-type gas engine for the same power output, but the greater continuity of service tends to balance the extra cost. Aside from the semi-portable units, a number of strictly portable compressors were used. These consisted of automotive-type gas engines direct connected to vertical compressors. The unit was assembled on one base and could be mounted on wheels or skids as desired. The chief objection to these, in the writer&apos;s opinion, was their small capacity— approximately 150 cu, ft. per min.—which made it necessary to use two, three, and sometimes more units per well, thus making the installation rather costly. However, they have been found valuable for test purposes and emergencies, where installation time is an important factor.

FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. The French Colonial Ministry has prepared an extensive program for aid to the mining industries in overseas possessions to be undertaken by

Transverse dispersion has received considerably less treatment in the literature than has longitudinal dispersion. Different methods for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in different investigations, and the results obtained have not been consistent enough to permit accurate generalizations as to the effect of various physical parameters on the magnitude of these coefficients. A numerical solution to the differential equation describing transverse dispersion in the absence of longitudinal dispersion was obtained to enable one to calculate the dispersion coefficient from experimental results. The more general dispersion equation including longitudinal dispersion also was solved numerically to give quantitative limits of a dimensionless group within which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is justified. Possible experimental procedures were examined, and one utilizing a cylindrical packed column was chosen for the determination of transverse dispersion coefficients. Values of these coefficients were determined for a system of two miscible organic fluids of equal density and viscosity, for two sizes of packing material over a wide range of flow rates in the laminar regime. The dispersion coefficient was found to decrease, for a constant value of the product of packing size and interstitial velocity, as the size of the packing material particles increased. INTRODUCTION Longitudinal dispersion has received extensive treatment in the literature, and consequently is better understood than its orthogonal counterpart, transverse dispersion. Many mathematical models of dispersion processes assume that transverse dispersion is rapid enough to damp out any radial** concentration gradients and therefore may be neglected. Laboratory and production results, however, indicate that this is a poor assumption.l,2 Various experimental procedures for determining transverse dispersion coefficients have been used in previous investigations, but the results have generally been expressed by similar correlations. The transverse dispersion coefficients obtained, however, have often varied considerably for given values of the correlation parameters. We feel that further experimental determinations of transverse dispersion coefficients will help alleviate some of the inconsistencies in these empirical correlations. One assumption implicit in all previous investigations is that of negligible longitudinal dispersion in the experimental system. An attempt to justify this assumption often is made using intuitive reasoning, but it is apparent that this reasoning must break down as the condition of zero flow rate is approached. A mathematical examination of the equations describing the system yields physical limits outside of which the assumption of negligible longitudinal dispersion is invalid. BACKGROUND In a porous medium, the "effective molecular diffusivity" De is less than the molecular diffusivity D measured in the absence of a porous medium, due to the tortuous path which a diffusing molecule must travel. Various authors3-5 have reported values of the ratio De/D in the range of 0.6 to 0.7. When there is fluid flow within the porous medium, mass transfer occurs by convective dispersion as well as by molecular diffusion. These are separate phenomena and can be treated as such on a microscopic scale. However, the mathematical complexity is such that only extremely simple geometries could be considered, and the results hardly would be applicable to the complex geometries existent in actual porous media. Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

THREE years ago the writer presented a paper on the trend of development in the wrought iron industry,1 wherein was described a process in the development of which he has been a factor, which at that time had passed through several years of progressive experimental development but which had not then been put upon a commercial scale of operation. The present paper deals with two years of observation and experience in the commercial operation of a plant by the A. A Byers Co. at Warren, Ohio. It will not enter into the controversial field of the relative merit of wrought iron and steel in various classes of service, nor will it elaborate upon the characteristic services or fields of utility to which wrought iron is particularly adapted. It is sufficient to state that the wrought iron industry is upon a substantial basis and that the material finds service in pipe, where its advantages are in superior corrosion, fatigue, welding and threading qualities; in bar iron for staybolts, engine bolts, and rivets, demanding maximum service against corrosion and fatigue; in plates for corrosion service; and in chains, because of welding and shock-resisting characteristics. In short, ability to withstand the stresses of shock and vibration, or the ravages of corrosion, to hold protective coatings, and to give maximum efficiency in welding, are its features of relative superiority. If these features were not well recognized, the wrought iron industry would have shrunk to insignificance in the face of high costs and acknowledged limitations in manufacture. To charge that this industry is built upon a structure of assumption, psychology, and improperly weighed evidence is an impeachment of the integrity or belittling of the powers of observation of users through many centuries of service experiences.
