Most previous studies of coal flotation utilized chemically pure reagents. Since such reagents are not available in quantity, a study of various wmmercially available reagents as frothers was undertaken. Flotation procedures similar to those used in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were employed. The reagents used were compared on yield-selectivity-wst basis. The selectivity was found to be relatively constant with yields above 70% but the reagent cost varied greatly. The types of reagents available were compared. In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these have been an attempt to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical proper- ties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floata-bility of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, 1) the yields obtained, 2) the ash levels obtained and 3) the reagent cost relating to these results. This discussion will be limited to malleable, commercially pure nickel and some high-nickel alloys, containing more than 50 per cent of nickel, which are produced by The International Nickel Company, Inc. at its Huntington works, West Virginia, from electrolytic nickel or from a nickel-copper sulphide matte. The principal sources of nickel are sulphides of nickel, copper and iron, which are found in the large deposit of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite ores in the Sudbury area of Ontario, Canada. Pentlandite, a complex nickel-iron sulphide, is the nickel carrier. These ores are concentrated, roasted, and smelted to remove considerable iron and sulphur and to produce a nickel-copper sulphide matte. Separation of the component sulphides of this matte, followed by electrolytic refining, results in the production of electrolytic nickel and electrolytic copper; direct refining of a selected portion of the matte gives the nickel-copper alloy, Monel. FUNDAMENTAL OPERATIONS Melting of the metallic materials is done in natural gas-fired, acid furnaces of the open-hearth, or reverberatory, type, having capacities of 6 to 20 tons; in three-phase, basic, electric-arc furnaces, having capacities of 7 to 20 tons; and in basic, high-frequency induction furnaces having capacities of ½ to 3 tons. Malleable, commercially pure nickel is melted in the acid open-hearth furnace. The charge is sulphur-free, electrolytic nickel, containing 99.9 per cent nickel* and clean mill scrap. Monel, containing approximately two thirds nickel and one third copper, is produced by roasting the nickel-copper sulphide matte to an oxide, smelting the oxide with charcoal in a 20-ton, acid open-hearth furnace, adding clean mill scrap, duplexing to a 20-ton, basic, electric-arc furnace, and refining in this furnace with a lime-fluorspar, carbide slag. Inconel, containing nickel, 80 per cent; chromium, 14 and iron, 6, is melted in the 7-ton electric-arc furnace or the 3-ton induction furnace. The charge is electrolytic nickel, ferrochromium and clean mill scrap. These are the fundamental operations. High-nickel alloys are produced from one of these three materials by additions of suitable amounts of manganese, aluminum, silicon or copper. For example, the age-hardenable alloy, K Monel, is produced from Monel by the addition of approximately 3 per cent of aluminum, and D nickel is produced from nickel by the addition of approximately 4.5 per cent of metallic manganese. For conversion to rods, bars, sheet, strip, tubing and wire forms, by hot-working and cold-working operations, the molten materials are teemed into ingots ranging in size from 14 by 14 by 60 in., 3300 lb., to 36 by 36 by 48 in., 18,000 lb. All ingots are overhauled mechanically before hot working.

WHILE the library work of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was founded three years after the formation of the Auxiliary, its present policy of establishing permanent libraries in mining camps throughout the United States dates only from 1924. Since then sixteen libraries have been established and thousands of books have found their way to homes of far-away miners, bringing pleasure and knowledge to a multitude of Americans and future citizens. Library work was initiated under the presidency of Mrs. H. W. Hardinge in 1922 and firmly established with her aid as one of the main activities of the Auxiliary. The first chairman served but a short time and Mrs. A. O. Ihlseng then took over the work of chairman of the Library Committee. To place the surplus books of Auxiliary members and their friends in use in mining camps was the immediate work of the committee. This was accomplished by placing a traveling library in the Bureau of Mines' cars and also by sending books for distribution to section chair- men in our larger mining camps.

THIS is a day of surpluses, some good and some not so good. One can hardly pick up a newspaper, magazine, review or economic treatise without confronting the fact that we have or are threatened with more .of certain goods than we have use for, whether it be corn, wheat, cotton, coal or oil, -lumber, 'leather, newsprint, automobiles, zinc, lead, copper or what not. How did this unprecedented state of affairs arise? Who is to blame? How shall we avoid smothering ourselves in our own production? The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? Not satisfied with the result, it spends other millions to prepare vast areas of the arid land of the West for more farmers to cultivate and insure yet larger surpluses. Then what? Naturally another appeal to the Government to fix prices by financing the

The substance referred to in the title is the artificially prepared basic carbonate of magnesia, a compound of the carbonate with the hydroxide. It is the "block-magnesia " of commerce, the magnesia alba of the pharmacist. Its composition, though somewhat indefinite, may usually be expressed by the formula : 4MgCO3,Mg(OH)2, 5H2O; it is found to vary slightly with the details of the method of preparation. This substance has been employed recently with much reported success, as a non-conductor of heat. It is moulded to form coverings suitable for steam-pipes and their fittings and sectional jackets for boilers and cylinders; it is furnished also in forms suitable for lining refrigerators, walls and roofs of buildings, fire-proof safes, etc. It was with a view of ascertaining the efficiency of this material as a non-conductor, or, rather, its relative efficiency among the various non-conducting materials in use, that the writer made the experiments about to be described. A block of magnesium carbonate or magnesia alba exhibits some interesting physical qualities. It is a smooth, white, close-grained solid, in outward appearance resembling a block of Paris plaster. It possesses the lightness of cork, the porosity of sponge, and withal a degree of firmness and strength that, in view of its levity, is quite remarkable. To examine more closely the properties of this substance, a number of 1-inch cubes were sawed from the commercial block-carbonate, also some bricks, that is, blocks measuring accurately 2 x 4 x 8 inches, the dimensions of an ordinary brick. The cubes weighed from 2.2 to 2.7 grammes, the bricks weighed 140 to 175 grammes (5 to 6 ounces). The bricks were carefully measured and weighed, and placed in vessels containing distilled water, in which they became gradually submerged, owing to the displacement by water of the air inclosed in the structure of the magnesium carbonate. After twenty-four hours the blocks were removed from the water, dried superficially by contact with filter-paper and weighed. From the increase in weight, the volume of the water absorbed, and consequently that of the air displaced by it, were obtained. For example: a block which when dry weighed 155

A. MALINOVSZKY,* Belleville, Ill. (written discussion?).-I have been very much interested in Mr. Dolman's paper. We all realize, I think, that this question of developing our home industries and support-ing the new industries which have developed during the great war is very important at present. Mr. Dolman has well shown the quantity and quality of the raw magnesite in the United States, and the commercial and industrial possibility of our home magnesite and I believe, with him, that our home industries should receive adequate protection. There are two reasons, however, for believing that this may be difficult. One reason is that much American capital is invested in the Austro-Hungarian magnesite industry. The raw magnesite can be quarried and prepared for the market in Austria with much cheaper labor expense than in the United States; large deposits which are very easy to quarry and good transportation facilities also contribute to the cheapness of production. The second reason is the old saying that the magnesite found in the United States is not of the same quality as the Austro-Hungarian mag-nesite; this I doubt. Even if the magnesite found here does not in a raw state equal the Austro-Hungarian, it can be synthetized so that the finished article will have the same properties as the Austro-Hun-garian finished magnesite refractory possesses. Thaw magnesite from Greece is not the same as the. Austro-Hungarian, but it has linen demon-strated that a good refractory can be made from the Greek product.

UNLIKE the development of sintering lead, copper and zinc ores, the sintering of fine irony material had its birth, not as a result of gradual growth along lines aimed at the production of sintered and agglomerated product, but because the success of the sintering operation in other lines had been brought to the attention of the ironmasters, who were immediately attracted by the prospect of being able to convert their own fines-into a similar product. The abundance of iron ores in the United States and their comparative cheapness had led iron men into the habit of not paying particular attention to the fine material blown out of their blast furnaces. Hundreds of thousands of tons had been stacked up and used only during times of shortage of ore and then usually without any preliminary preparation, though many attempts had been made to briquette it. Briquettes proved good material, but the operation of briquetting was too expen-sive when applied to iron-ore fines. The development of the iron-ore blast furnace in the United States tended toward large units, high columns and heavy blast pressure, and this tendency is still peculiar to this country, whereas in the other countries the tendency has been to smaller units, lower columns and lower blasts. The high blast pressures and swift driving of the American blast furnace tend, of course, to produce more flue dust than European practice, and this production of flue dust was augmented when large quantities of soft ore, of which the Mesabi is typical, came on to the market. These ores are desirable chemically but physically they are soft, friable and fine, and when they are used in the iron blast furnace the flue dust produc-tion is increased. The necessity of rehandling the flue dust lead to briquetting on an extensive scale. The binders used were either chemical or mechanical, and in one system the briquettes were kiln fired in very high temperatures. Rotary kilns, coal or oil fired, were used extensively, and gave a product of hard and more or less nodulized material, but at considerable cost. This was the situation in regard to iron flue dust when the late James Gayley and his associates became interested in the idea of sintering the iron blast-furnace flue dusts under their own fuel (included coke dust) of which they carried between 15 and 30 per cent.

(communication to the Secretary): Mr. Rothwell's condemnation of my paper on the International Correspondence Schools as not giving an impartial view of the whole field of such enterprises, because it was confined to the description of a single one, might be legitimate if I had undertaken or professed to do anything else than that which I was requested by the Secretary of the Institute to do—namely, to give an account of this particular institution. This is a sufficient answer to all his direct or implied criticisms upon my omission to mention either persons or organizations outside of the special limits set for me. Recognizing fully that personalities have no place whatever in the Transactions, I regret the necessity of making the following statement in answer to Mr. Rothwell's charge that I omitted to give due credit to Mr. Ewald, a former principal of the International Correspondence Schools. The Colliery Engineer School of Mines was started in 1891, and its first student was enrolled October 16, 1891. During the fall of the same year the mine-mechanical course was laid out along the same general line that had already been followed in the mining course. This mine-mechanical course was the foundation from which sprung the later developments of the several mechanical courses. Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in

A COMPLETE transformation has taken place in the boras industry during the year 1908. A most remarkable factor in this radical change in method of producing the crude borates has been its removal from the realm of industrial chemistry to the field of mining. With the development of extensive deposits of borate-minerals interstratified in thick sequences of Tertiary clays and sands, their winning becomes a strictly mining-enterprise, of the same kind and of the same certainty as the digging of coal or iron-ore. The major supply of the world's production of commercial borax now comes from the United States. While formerly all of the boric salts of commerce were laboriously extracted from the waters of saline lakes of the arid regions, or from the bottom-salts of desiccated ponds, it later was largely slowly leached from ancient desert shales and clays. During these periods the borax industry was a very hazardous and expensive vocation.

THIS paper is a progress report covering metallographic applications of the electron microscope that have been made during the past year at Carnegie Institute of Technology. An account is presented of the techniques that have been most satisfactory, the difficulties encountered, the resolution obtained, and the peculiarities that have been noted in the microstructures. About 12m exposures have been made during the year on the instrument, which is an RCA type B2 transmission microscope,1 and a number of these have been selected to illustrate the results obtained. Prints are also included showing the common types of falsities-to borrow a term from the biological field, the "artifacts." In brief, the paper is a record of our attempt to determine the value of the electron microscope in the study of the structure of metals and alloys. n addition to comments on techniques and the quality of photomicrographs obtainable with them, the paper discusses the nature of the etch attack on a few metals, and the possible relation between the fine structure revealed by etching and the mosaic block structure of the grains. Since numerous papers and reviews are available on the subject of imperfection in crystals, the comments here may be very brief; in fact, are restricted almost entirely to points having to do with recent theories relating the strength of metals to imperfections and to spacings of slip lines. SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND PHOTOGRAPHS Mechanical polishing by hand was used throughout this work. Precautions that must be taken in microscopy at high magnification, which have been well explained by Vilella in his book on Metallographic Technique for Steel, are likewise important with the electron microscope. This applies particularly to the need for repeated polishing and etching (each successive polish becoming less severe and each etch lighter), since the final etch should in general be no heavier than is used for oil-immersion optical microscopy and in many instances should be much lighter (compare Figs. 6a and 7a, 6d and 7b). An extremely light etch, of course, is incapable of cutting through a flowed layer of appreciable thickness. Unquestionably it would be very advantageous in each instance to compare the structures obtained by electrolytic polishing with those obtained by mechanical polishing, but difficulties with the electrolytic method have prevented this in the following collection of prints. The choice of etchant is important, of course; for example, picral proved superior to nital for tempered martensite. With the exception of Figs. Ib and IC, the replicas used were of silica, deposited up0n polystyrene and floated from the polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to the method of Heidenreich and Peck.2 The samples were mounted in Bakelite, polished and etched, then the polished Bakelite

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. Figs. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 are depth contour maps on top of the five main producing sands in the field. These maps show the relative size of the five reservoirs and the

"Butte originated as a placer mining camp. The first gold discovery was made in the year 1864, near what is now Main Street. Placer mining was vigorously prosecuted along Silver Bow Creek and in Missoula, Buffalo, Town and Parrot gulches for a period of five years, at the end of which time, in 1870, the camp was practically deserted. In the meantime, the quartz veins so prominently traceable over the hillsides were located, the first location being made by W. L. Farlin and called the Black Chief claim, and later restaked as the Travona. Reasoning from the presence of the gold placers, free-milling gold ores were eagerly looked for by the early prospectors. Claims covering the great Rainbow and other silver lodes were located in the sixties. The presence of valuable silver ores in these veins caused the staking out of many claims, believed to be valuable only for silver, but which later proved to be enormous copper producers.Treatment of these early discovered rich ores was first attempted in arrastres. Later, stamp mills were built. The Centennial dropping 10 stamps, was the first, and in 1875 Mr. Farlin built the Dexter 10-stamp mill, intro¬ducing chloridizing-roasting. More successful processes were soon introduced and several large mills built, among which were the Alice, Lexington, Silver Bow, Moulton and Bluebird, in all representing a total of 290 stamps. The silver mining industry reached its zenith in 1887 and declined rapidly in the early nineties, following the sudden drop in the price of silver in 1892.During this period of silver mining activity the business of copper mining was making rapid strides. Development of the veins, located as silver veins, had uncovered copper ore in many instances. There was great activity in ""claim staking'' in the years from 1871 to 1879, during which period most of the claims covering the present productive copper area were located."

Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 547 wells in western Kansas, of which 379 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared better than the independents. Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. DURING 1931 the petroleum industry has faced the most hazardous periods of its existence, caused by large potentials, overproduction, and demoralized markets. Two state governors actually resorted to the use of the militia in an effort to restore a semi-stabilized condition within the industry, to prevent waste of the states' natural resources, and to restore prices to a level that would yield the states a reasonable tax revenue. These conditions have made it necessary to put into effect most. stringent economies and have produced a spirit of cooperation between companies to an extent that never before existed. The necessity for unified action on such matters as proration and the advantages to be gained by unit operation are being realized by the oil industry as a whole. Fewer wells have been drilled and wildcat operations almost eliminated: development and operation costs have been greatly reduced and more attention is being paid to efficient recovery methods. The net work of oil pipe- lines has grown rapidly especially in the area of East Texas. The construction and operation of natural gas and gasoline pipelines into areas far distant from the source of supply has been one of the outstanding accomplishments. Refining efficiency has continued to increase and the public is being supplied with a better grade of gasoline at a lower price. The unreasonable tax which state politicians have succeeded in placing on gasoline has encouraged tax evasion and unfair competition by un- scrupulous dealers and has misled the public as to the true price of gasoline.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Normally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now being used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present picture will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time.

Residual viscosity, the ViSCOSitY at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature, has been found to be independent of temperature for pure components and mixtures for simple molecules and light hydrocarbons. The residual viscosities for methane, ethane, propane and four mixtures were correlated as a function of reduced density and molecular weight. INTRODUCTION Earlier efforts in correlating the viscosity of light hydrocarbons and associated gases under pressure, primarily by some form of the corresponding states principle, have been reported elsewhere.7 The formal theory of corresponding states principle for viscosity from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical arguments for simple molecules has been developed by Helfand and Rice.13 The most serious obstacle to the development of a generalized corresponding states representation of viscosity data, even for simple molecules, has been the limited quantity of precise viscosity data of pure components and mixtures over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. Viscosity data on light hydrocarbons have recently been contributed by several laboratories.2,6,8,23,25,26 In the study of the viscosity of nitrogen, Michels and Gibson" observed that the viscosities of nitrogen as a function of density gave parallel isotherms. The same behavior has since been reported for other gases.".= The observed behavior indicates that the residual viscosity or the viscosity at a given pressure and temperature minus the dilute gas viscosity at the same temperature is a unique function of the density. Abas-Zade,1 Michels and Botzen,18 and Michels, Bot-Zen, Friedman and Sengers,19 observed similar behavior for thermal conductivity, the residual thermal conductivity being defined in a manner parallel to that of residual viscosity. Thodos and co-workers 4,15,24 applied the residual viscosity concept to the viscosity of pure monatomic and diatomic gases. Ellington and co-workers10,25 made the residual viscosity vs density plots for ethane and propane, but omitted the region below a residual viscosity of 15 micropoise and showed a systematic separation of the ethane isotherms in the low density region. Eakin correlated the residual viscosity of methane, ethane, propane and n-butane empirically as a function of density and molecular weight: Carmichael and Sage6 recently presented ethane residual viscosity vs density values in the gaseous liquid, and near critical regions as a single univariant function of density. Flynn, Hanks, Lemaire and ROSS" have contributed extremely accurate viscosity data to confirm that the residual viscosity concept is essentially correct, but may not be accurate within 0.1 per cent of the viscosity value for the gaseous state- The recent studies by Giddings12 indicate that the residual viscosity of methane, propane and each of four methane-propane mixtures are unique functions of density Over the temperature and the density ranges studied.
