CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

Y., having been" nominated by a large number of leading members, and recommended by unammous vote of the Council, was unanimously elected an Honorary Member, in recognition of his distinguished services to the practice and the literature of mining and metallurgy, his zealous and loyal devotion to this Institute, his fraternal generosity towards professional colleagues, and his effective advocacy, by public utterance and private example, of the free communication of technical knowledge and experience. At the same meeting, By-Law IV., which now authorizes the Secretary to appoint an '1 Assistant Editor," was amended by substituting the words, " Assistant with the title of Editor." At the same meeting, the resignation of Mr. Theodore Dwight, as Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Institute, was presented and accepted, and the Secretary was instructed to express to Mr. Dwight the thanks of the Board for his loyal and efficient services, and its regret that he could not continue in that position. . Pronounced isothermal martensite formation at room temperature was measured dilatometrically in a steel containing 0.01 pct C, 24.9 pct Ni, 0.26 pctAl, 2.58 pct Ti and 0.25 pct Cb. It is shown that martensite will form isothermally if stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation is eliminated by removal of carbon. The decarburization of two iron-nickel alloys allows isothermal transformation to martensite to occur at temperatures above their athermal Ms temperatures. In an Fe-22.4 pct Ni alloy, at the 0.008 pct C level, the Ms temperature during air cooling is 85°F higher than that during- water quenching-. At the 0.15 pct C level this difference is reduced to only 5°F. The introduction of carbon causes stabilization during air cooling which lowers the Ms temperature virtually to the same level as determined during mate?. quenching. Thus in the 0.15 pct C alloy, the Ms temperature is almost independent of cooling rate. It is suggested that rival theories of martensite formation should be reexamined in alloys of sufficiently low carbon and nitrogen content to eliminate the complication of stabilization. The Ms temperature of a steel containing 0.01 pct C, 24.9 pct Ni, 0.26 pct Al, 1.58 pct Ti and 0.15 pct Cb, solution treated at 1500°F and air cooled as 1/8-in. diam specimens, was found to be 57 °F. 1 However, when held for several hours at room temperature the steel hardened slightly and became appreciably ferromagnetic. Isothermal transformation to martensite was first revealed by Kurdjumov and Maksimova2 in an iron-base alloy containing 0.6 pct C, 6.0 pct Mn and 2 pct Cu. Most of the other studies of isothermal martensite have also been confined to highly alloyed steels which transform at subzero temperatures; for instance, DasGupta and Lement, 3 Cech and Hollomon, 4 Machlin and Cohen,5 Shih, Averbach, and Cohen.6 Averbach and cohen7 noted a rapidly decaying volume increase at room temperature in a steel containing 1 pct C, 1.5 pct Cr and 0.2 pct V. cina8 and Marshall, Perry, and Harpster9 have described the isothermal transformation to martensite at room and subzero temperature in stainless steels. Kurdjumov10 has recently reviewed the subject, noting that the isothermal formation of martensite can be observed only in the temperature range somewhat below Ms or below -50°C. The isothermal formation of martensite may be characterized as follows: 1) It occurs in steels of widely different compositions, the main prerequisite being a low transformation temperature. 2) The transformation occurs by the formation of new plates and not by the growth of old ones. 3) The isothermal transformation is suppresed by stabilization during slow cooling or holding at temperatures near room temperature. However, the factors governing this mode of transformation are still not fully understood. The formation of martensite isothermally suggests an activated process. The early theories of martensite formation did, in fact, utilize classical nucleation concepts. Kurdjumov 11 first proposed the presence of thermally activated nuclei of different sizes and compositions which would grow if they reached critical size during cooling. This treatment was enlarged and developed quantitatively by Fisher, Holloman, and Turnbull12,13 and was later reviewed by the latter two authors.14 Fisher15 associates Ms with a nucleation rate of one per cc per sec. At slightly higher temperatures the nucleation rate is so low that isothermal formation of martensite is not observed in reasonable times. At slightly lower temperatures the nucleation rate is so high that it could not be suppressed by rapid cooling. By judicious use of parameters Fisher 16 was able to obtain good agreement between classical nucleation theory and the incubation times of martensite formation.4 However the application of these principles to martensite formation in iron-nickel alloys15 predicts that an alloy containing about 30 pct (31 at. pet) Ni would not transform. The presence of an Ms temperature at -223° C in an alloy containing 34.1 pct (33 at. pct) Ni led Kaufman and cohen17 to reject the hypothesis of homogeneous nucleation in favor of the reaction path theory originally proposed by Cohen, Machlin and Paranjpe.18 This theory conveniently explains the formation of martensite athermally but becomes labored when dealing with isothermal formation. Kaufman and cohen19 did explain the isothermal activation of embryos by assuming it to be a result of the expansion of their boundary dislocation loops but this treatment predicts an upper temperature limit of isothermal martensite formation.

The upper-level mineralization of the din Buttes, Arizona copper orebody consists primarily of dilute copper silicate impregnation in fault clay and throughout the altered limestone hostrock. Cuprite and native copper are minor with true chrysocolla rare. Owing to the high calcium carbonate and to the hydrogen ion exchange capacity of the clays, acid leaching would be economical only with cheap acid available. Leaching of the silicate copper with reagents other than sulfuric acid is slow and incomplete unless the ore is first heated to disorder the mineralized grains and to reduce partially the contained copper. Following heat treatment, 70 to 90 percent of the nonsulfide copper can be dissolved in aqueous anrmonium carbonate. Recovery of a pregnant solution by counter-current decantation is effective provided ammonium carbonate solution is added to the washing stages in order to oppose adsorption of dissolved copper by clays in the residue. Thermal stripping of the pregnant solution permits recovery of ammonia and carbon dioxide while precipitating copper either as oxide or carbonate. The research program was carried from batch tests through continuous miniplant operation to a five-month campaign in a 20 TPD continuous pilot plant. Pilot plant results, the relationships among key varibles, and a detailed flowsheet are given.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. The Falconbridge ore body, on the southeastern periphery of the Sudbury Basin, is definitely associated with a strong shear zone along the norite greenstone contact, in contrast to the "offset" ore bodies sometimes found in this district. To all practical intent and purpose, the dip is vertical. The ore varies in width from a few inches up to 90 ft., the average width being 15 ft. The present zone of mining operations is 6000 ft. long, 85 per cent of which develops commercial ore. The ground on the whole, and especially in the narrower widths, gives rise to reasonably strong self-supporting backs in most places, but the walls, because of strong post ore faulting on both norite and greenstone contacts, tend to be weak, and, at times, slough to a considerable extent. Obviously. then, with vertical dips, strong backs and weak sloughing walls, flat-back cut-and-fill methods are applicable to the Falconbridge ore body, and at present about 70 per cent of the stoping production is obtained in this way. The general method is described in the following pages. In actual practice, there are continual variations, as the mine staff feels that only in that way can new and better methods be developed. Source of Fill The overburden at the property consists of glacial sands and gravels, varying in depth from 00 at the outcrops, which are few and far between, to 150 ft. This condition makes for high initial cost of shaft sinking, always entailing spiling and concrete, but this extra expense is more than compensated for by the fact that the overburden is the source of very cheap fill.

Iron Ore Resources of the World (Die Eisenersvorrate der Welt)_ By G. Einicke. The author reveals the effect of geological formations, iron content of ore, accessability, cost of transportation, political and economic considerations. Ore beds of importance to the German iron and steel industry are given more space than others. The bibliography contains almost 250 references. A tragic comic feature is the author's complaint that as soon as a map of iron ore resources of a country has been completed, the country's boundaries are changed. Reviewed by W. Writing the Technical Report, third edition, by J. Raleigh Nelson. McGraw-Hill Book Co. $4.50, 356 pp., 1952.-The aim of the book is to inspire a greater interest in report writing. Basis for the increased interest is a development of a keener understanding of the writer's own mental processes and the practical procedures involved in writing a report. The book is concerned with basic principles and procedures, rather than incidentals. It emphasizes the importance of correct attitudes and suggests a method of approach and organization. In the first part of the book, design and composition are considered. Next, the text gives directions for setting up both the long and short term report. The third part of, the book gives a systematic procecure for critical examination of the report. The fourth section presents a 16 week course in report writing. The Rocks of the Sekondi Series of the Gold Coast, by A T. Crow. Gold Coast Geological Survey. 7s. 6d, 73 pp., 1952.-The book describes the results of careful and detailed mapping of the Sekondi Series. The Sekondi-Takoradi area is undergoing intensive development, including extensions to Takoradi Harbor and to the railways. Details are given on the nature, extent, and structure of the Series and many faults which cut into them. The book is aimed at those with a practical interest in the area. It is illustrated with geological maps and drawings of horizontal sections. In the back, the terrain of the series is illustrated in a group of plates.

THE physical-chemical behavior of the system Pb-S-0 is of prime importance to the understanding of lead smelting processes, yet little accurate information is available on either equilibrium or kinetic behavior in this system. This paper is the first report of a program designed to fill gaps in our knowledge of this system. In the total ternary Pb-S-0, the region of greatest metallurgical interest is that bounded by the compositions Pb-PbS-PbS0,-PbO-Pb. Systems richer in sulfur, or richer in oxygen,* than those essentially pure SO2. This conclusion follows from the fact that all systems are in a highly reduced state, since either PbS or Pb is a constituent of all the equilibria. The content of 02, SO3, S2, S6, S8, and so forth, can be shown to be negligible compared to SO, in all such systems.* corresponding to this region can only be obtained at gas pressures exceeding 1 atm, a condition seldom met in lead smelting practice. Not only is the present study limited to condensed phases within this portion of the total system, but it is limited to temperatures at which all phases are pure solids, except for lead, which is liquid. In this limited system the following seven condensed phases are known to exist: Pb(l), PbS(c), PbO(c), PbSO,(c), PbSO,•PbO(c), PbSO4 • 2PbO(c), and PbSO, -4PbO(c). PbO exists in two crystal modifications,' but only the high-temperature yellow form is considered here. Schenck and co-workers2-4 reported the compound PbSO4 3Pb0 to be stable at high temperature, but the more recent work of Lander,5 and the present work, prove that the tetra-basic sulfate, rather than the tri-basic sulfate is stable. Fig. 1 shows the composition diagram for the binary PbO-PbSO2, based primarily on the work of Lander. In this study the univariant boundaries and invariant points existing among these seven condensed phases and the gas phase have been determined. In a ternary system, the phase rule indicates that an invariant point involves the simultaneous equilibrium of five phases—four condensed phases and the gas phase. A univariant relation involves four phases—three condensed phases and the gas phase. The gas phase in the systems studied is The following stable univariant equilibria between SOz and the condensed phases were identified: (a) PbS + 7PbS04 = 4(PbSO, - PbO) + 4SO2 (b) PbS + l0(PbS04 • PbO) = 7(PbSO4- 2PbO) + 4SO2 (c) PbS + 8(PbSO4 • 2PbO) = 5(PbSO4 . 4PbO) + 4SO2 (d) Pb + PbSO, • 4PbO = 6PbO + SO2 (e) 3PbS + PbSO4 . 4PbO = 8Pb + 4SO2 (f) 3PbS + 16(PbS04 PbO) = 7(PbSO4 . 4PbO)+ 12SO2 (g) 2PbS + PbSO,2PbO = 5Pb + 3SO2 (h) Pb + 3(PbSO4 . 2PbO) = 2(PbSO,. 4PbO) + SO, Of these eight univariant equilibria, five were measured in this work (a, b, c, d, and g) and the behavior of the other three (e, f, and h) was calculated by thermodynamic analysis of the measured data. Two invariant points were found corresponding to simultaneous equilibria as follows: Point 1: PbS, PbSO4PbO, PbSO4.2PbO, PbSO, - 4PbO, and SO2 Point 2: Pb, PbS, PbSO, . 2PbO, PbSO, - 4PbO, and SO2, From the measurements it was also possible to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the three basic sulfates of lead at 298.16°K. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus—The experimental method consisted of the measurement of the gas pressure exerted by a given reaction mixture at a given temperature. THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 3/4 million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done' on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. The Mother Lode district in California is probably better known as the land of Bret Harte and Mark Twain than as a gold-producing district, although in this respect it holds an important place. The history of quartz mining on the Mother Lode dates back to the '50s, when, after the first fever of the gold rush, men began to look for something more permanent, if not more lucrative, than the placers. Since that time, the discoveries, shutdowns, and reopenings of the many mines, together with the varying fortunes of their numerous operators, constitute an interesting chapter in California history, but one too long to include in a description of mining methods. The district is well situated, so far as physical conditions are concerned. The Mother Lode extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half way between the crest and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, the country traversed consisting of low rolling hills—typical foot-hills. The elevation varies from 1000 to 1800 ft. and the climate is most desirable. There is an abundance of water, timber is easily obtained from the higher foot-hills a few miles east, and cheap hydro-electric power is generated practically on the Lode. These natural conditions are conducive to low costs in mining and have been the deciding factor in allowing profitable exploitation of the comparatively low-grade orebodies. Transportation facilities are not bad. Five branch railroads, from the main trunk lines in the valley, tap the district at intervals of from 10 to 30 miles, and the roads connecting these are fairly good for trucking purposes. Labor is made up of several nationalities, the principal ones being American, Spanish, Jugo-Slav, Italian, and Mexican. There were few Mexicans on the Lode prior to 1919, but the shortage of labor, experienced generally by the mining camps of the country in the years following the war, made necessary the hiring of some. The percentage of Mexican labor rapidly increased in 1920 and for a year or so thereafter, but it has now diminished until at most of the mines only a few Mexicans are working. Of the different nationalities, Americans are the most efficient and Mexicans the least.

Soaps have hem used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xan-thates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present cminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies. † A broad, semiquantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. The Paraffin Chain Salts 'he basic requirements for a "collector " in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polar-nonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2)nX where .X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -Co2Na, -So3Na, -So4Na, — PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the

I. INTRODUCTION. FOR a period of several years, and in a large number of cases, the Metallurgical Laboratories of the New Mexico School of Mines were employed in umpire work. During this time many important local problems were solved. Against the results of careful chemical analyses of ores, assay-returns were often checked. In many cases the assay-methods of mine and custom-smelter were compared, and both often found faulty for the ore concerned. A wide range of ores was covered. Many of the chemical analyses and assays were made by Dr. F. C. Lincoln, Professor of Metallurgy, now of the Montana State School of Mines. A varied series of instructive assays was prepared by Prof. R. B. Brinsmade, now of the West Virginia State University. Single assays and given series of tests were undertaken by H. T. Goodjohn, now chief chemist to the Cia. Metalurgica de Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; by H. J. Hubbard, now superintendent of the Butters Divisadero Mines, Jocoro,. San Salvador, C. A.; by E. D. The principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the lime-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Since the middle of 1922, the management of the American Lime R. Stone Co. has been under the direction and ownership of the Warner Company, of Philadelphia. • The Venezuelan Trade Mission to the United States announced that Bethlehem Steel Corp. will begin exporting iron ore from its El Pao concession, south of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, in about three months. The ore will be transported by rail from the mines to barges on the Orinoco and transshipped to ore vessels at the coast for shipment to the Sparrows Point, Md., plant. The Latin American business men warned that projected increases in the United States tariff on petroleum imports from Venezuela would force that country into bilateral trade agreements with other countries and would mean drastic curtailment of Venezuelan imports from this country. •Bethlehem, South American Gold and Platinum Co., and U. S. Steel are investigating the possibilities of securing American foodstuff for their South American mining camp commissaries through the International Basic Economy Corp. IBEC buys in quantity to supply its subsidiary companies operating in Venezuela and Brazil. The mining companies will rid themselves of this burdensome task as well as realizing a saving from the bulk purchases of IBEC. •Oliver Iron Mining Co. has begun construction of a fine ore and taconite agglomeration plant at Virginia, Minn. It is expected to be ready in six months. The plant will be used to experiment with the making of clinker cakes and egg-sized lumps by sintering machines and nodulizing kilns respectively; about 1 million tons per year will be produced. • Roof pinning has been adopted at the iron mines of TCI, near Birmingham, to support overlying strata as mining progresses. Favorable results have been obtained in that dilution of the ore has been reduced by 50% which is attributable to this method of supporting the roof. •An American mining engineering team has gone to Turkey for a two-year assignment assisting Turkish government agencies in the $45 million ECA development, mechanization, and construction of cleaning plants for the Zonguldak coal field, 200 miles east of Istanbul on the Black Sea. The group consists of James Beeley, John E. Good, John S. Lambright, David Renshaw, and Charles R. Weir, all of the Paul Weir Co. •Arthur F. Taggart describes a new way of training engineers by emphasis on broad, basic engineering courses on page 460 of this issue. •Lawrence T. Tierney, chairman of the National Bituminous Coal Advisory Council, released a report stating that the increase in oil imports since the latter part of 194$ has caused significant damage to the U. S. fuel economy. It has reduced the strength of and employment opportunities in the coal, domestic petroleum, and transportation industries, as well as in related service and supplier fields. •Women, camels, and donkeys are the beasts of burden of the Sahara, according-to the UNESCO World Review. •Increased demand for magnesium sheet in airplane construction ana other phases of the national security program have led Alcoa to establish a sheet magnesium rolling division at its New Kensington, Pa., works which will begin operation shortly. Novel prospecting methods being used by the USGS in its search for uranium include: shock-mounted instruments in light trucks,. Geiger-counter probes lowered into augur holes, and experimental airborne prospecting.

THE object of this investigation was to compare the arsenical antimony-lead alloy with some of the regular bearing-metal alloys. With this end in view, the following tests were made: 1. Chemical analyses to show the composition. 2. Thermal analyses. 3. Macroscopic examination of fractures. 4. Microscopic examination. 5. Tensile tests. 6. Crushing tests. 7. Scleroscope tests. 8. Brinell tests, at temperatures from 80° to 400° F. Tests 3 to 8 were conducted on both sand-cast and chill-cast specimens. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on a11 week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by for- warding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

EVER since the unusual high temperature creep resistance and structure stability of SAP (Sintered Aluminum Powder) and similar aluminum-alumina alloys were reported,'," there has been a need to determine whether other metal-metal oxide (or other hard stable particle) alloys, not so ideal as the Al-Al 2 O 3 system, would show similar high temperature strength and stability. Of the many possible methods of obtaining a metal-metal oxide alloy,a one that offers many practical and theoretical advantages is the simple mechanical blending of metal powders with hard stable particles, followed by pressing, sintering, and hot extruding. With this purpose in mind copper powder and silica and alumina were selected for experimentation because these materials are readily available, cheap, reliable, and lend themseives te the simplest processing and testing. Starting Materials—Two sizes of electrolytically deposited copper powders were used, a —200 mesh powder referred to as A powder in this investigation and a —325 mesh powder referred to as C powder. Silica was added in the form of pure Potter's flint from which a —10µ fraction had been separated. Alumina of the a variety was used in two size ranges. The first was a —10µ fraction separated from a coarser aggregate, the second a commercial product of 0.3µ average diam manufactured by Linde Air Products. Preparation of Powders—Five-hundred gram batches of A copper with 1, 3, and 10 volume pct of each of the three oxides mentioned above were prepared, as well as C copper containing 1, 3, and 10 volume pct of —lop silica. Powders were weighed out carefully and blended by ball milling in air for 24 hr. Since this treatment resulted in surface oxidation of the copper, the charge was hydrogen reduced at 260°C for 5 hr. The next step consisted of hydrostatically compacting the powder into a shape suitable for the required hot working. For this purpose a slug about 11/2 in. in diam and 31/2 in. in length was produced by placing the mixed powders into a rubber sleeve, holding in a perforated steel canister, and rubber stoppering at the ends; the assembly was then subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 50,000 psi.
