Past and present phosphate production in the central Florida phosphate district has been predominantly from the unique Bone Valley formation. As these lucrative reserves are depleted, production will shift to the Hawthorn formation in all areas, but particularly so within the southern extension, where vast potential reserves of low grade phosphates exist. Use of existing plants can be extended for some years by mining deeper into the underlying Hawthorn formation, and by mining previously ignored peripheral areas if erratic combinations of the two formations. Hawthorn Production, as compared to the Bone valley, will be characterized by lower grade; lower tonnage yield, lower pebble percent of product, higher mining ratios, higher slimes (- 150 mesh) content, and more complex mining and beneficiation problems. Geological control and more sophisticated operational procedure; will become increasingly more important as the lower quality reserves replace Bone Valley production.

There has been considerable discussion of late as to the best method of determining the silver-contents of sulphides of silver resulting from the leaching of silver-ores, and also as to the relative merits of the crucible- and the scorification-method for the determination of the silver-contents of ores. Owing to the great depression in the silver-market, these are questions of considerable importance, at the present time, to both the producer and the smelter and refiner. In the hope of throwing some further light on this subject, the following experiments were recently made by the writer:

The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, which, for most of the country up to recent years, have usually been referred to as “crystalline schists” or “crystalline complex;” and regarded principally as a metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior region this pre-Cambrian complex presents an' unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger degree than bas been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. [The portion here omitted contains descriptions of the Archean, Algonkian, and Keweenawan rocks of the several districts, their structure, distribution, correlation, and succession. The following data concerning the general dimensions and district-location of the blast-furnaces of the United States are intended to supplement a paper of similar title, which appears in volume xiv., pages 561 to 577, of the Transactions, and bring the record to the end of the calendar year 1886. The reasons for presenting the figures at so short an interval since the former paper are that the American Iron and Steel Association has lately issued a new directory of iron and steel works (edition of 1886) from which many of the plants which have been inactive are omitted and new industries added, to such an extent as to materially affect the figures presented in the first paper; and also that the improvement in business has encouraged a production of pig-iron in 1886 in excess of any previous outputs, and the results obtained in the industry at large as well as at individual plants form a better index of what the American furnaces can accomplish than those heretofore presented. The statement will not be extended beyond the production of pigiron, although it could well be made to include the manufactured iron and steel; and while the data given have been verified as far as possible up to the close of the year 1886, no attempt, except in special cases, has been made to note the changes which have taken place since that time—changes which within the next twelvemouth will affect some of the figures here presented. At the close of the year 1886 there were 579 blast-furnaces reported on the active list—an apparent decrease, as compared with my former paper, of 97 stacks; but this was not an actual decrease, since most of the furnaces dropped from the Directory were those which, owing to location, inefficient equipment, or fake of ore-supplies, etc., were considered likely to remain inactive, although a number of them will possibly be temporarily put into blast with iron advancing in price. This paper discusses the two major problems of computerization currently confronting the coal mining industry, specifically, user education and standardization of software practices. Each problem has a unique set of criteria that require addressing individually and collectively. This paper addresses these problems and additionally, a plausible method of overcoming these problems.
