The preparation and fabrication of copper-manganese-zinc alloys and the evaluation of their engineering properties have for some time been an integral part of a research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines. In this project, the use of electrolytic manganese, along with high purity copper and zinc, has permitted the preparation of alloys which contain a minimum of impurities which are capable of producing detectable effects in the properties studied. The initial work on the physical properties of wrought alpha solid solution alloys and a general outline of the alpha solid solution area for alloys containing up to 40 pct manganese have been presented in previous reports. 1,2,3,4,5 The evidence accumulated in these investigations clearly showed that additions of manganese to the copper-zinc alloys improve the strength properties of the brasses without seriously reducing their characteristic ductility and that considerable quantities of manganese could be added to the copper-zinc alloys without exceeding the mutual solubilities of manganese and zinc in copper. In continuation of these studies, additional data have been obtained in a more extensive investigation of the phase relationships of the copper-manganese-zinc ternary system. The present report delineates the solid phase boundaries of the ternary system from the copper-zinc binary to the manganese-zinc binary for alloys containing up to 50 pct zinc. Summary The alloys used in this investigation were conditioned by working schedules designed to homogenize the structures prior to heat treatments required for the equilibrium phase sludy. The treated alloys were examined by metallographic methods including hardness and X ray data for confirmation. The composite data of the investigation are summarily presented in a series of isothermal sections of the ternary system at 1100, 1200, 1300, 1200, and 1500°F. The salient features of the system as outlined by these data are: (1) the continuous alpha solid solution which extends across the diagram to the gamma-manganese phase of the manganese-zinc system at temperatures of 1200°F and higher, (2) the beta phase of the copper-zinc system similarly forms a continuous solid solution with its counterpart the beta field of the manganese-zinc binary, (3) at 1100°F (593°C) these alpha and beta fields are greatly restricted by complications arising from the allotropic transitions of manganese and the decreasing solubility of manganese in the alpha solid solution. The alpha + beta fields intersect the alpha + alpha manganese field to produce the beta + alpha manganese field and two adjacent three phase fields consisting of alpha + beta + alpha manganese and gamma + beta + alpha manganese. Typical microstructures representative of the various phase areas at each temperature are also presented. Natural gas has been known to exist for many years in the St. Lawrence Valley, between Quebec and Montreal, and more partirularly in the vicinity of Louisville and Three Rivers, 74 and 94 miles respectively northeast of Montreal, and 98 and 78 miles respectively southwest of Quebec; the distance from Montreal to Quebec along the St. Lawreuce River being about 175 miles. It was not until 1880 that any practical explorations were begun with the hope of finding gas in sufficient quantities for commercial uses. In this year Messrs. Piret and Genest, of Three Rivers, sank a well near St. Maurice to a depth of 50 feet, where solid rock was encountered. A similar well was drilled through the glacial and allavial drift, in the same district, in 1883, by the Messrs. Renaud Freres and Dubois, to a depth of 70 feet before solid rock was encountered. In this latter well a strong flow of gas was obtained. The gas was an outflow from a very limited reservoir in the porous glacial gravel, which had been filled from the gas resulting from the decomposition of vegetable remains, which had been buried in the gravel at the time of its deposition. Subsequently, other wells were sunk in the same way, with the hope of getting gas in commercial quantities from similar reservoirs. The improvement in leaching introduced by the Russell process has stimulated the development of processes for refining lixiviation-sulphides. In the early days several processes for dealing with the sulphides were proposed, and some of them were tried more or less ; but the business finally settled down to sending the sulphides to the smelters, although this was known to be both troublesome and expensive. In 1891 Mr. C. A. Stetefeldt* introduced at the Marsac mill, Park City, Utah, an unpatented process, built up out of the general fund of information available. It consisted in matting the sulphides, grinding, roasting, grinding again, and dissolving the copper out in diluted sulphuric acid, then melting the silver and crystallizing the bluestone. It did not yield fine bullion, hence the bullion had to be refined as well as parted; besides, there was some loss. This process was thoroughly tried at the Marsac refinery and then a year's run was made, the net result of which was that it did not prove sufficiently better than the sending of the sulphides to the smelters to warrant its substitution for that practice. In 1893 the Dewey-Walter Refining Company undertook the refining of the Daly sulphides in the Marsac refinery by the sulphuric acid process, upon which two United States patents ? have been issued to the writer. I have the pleasure of exhibiting samples of the rock in which the South African diamonds are said to occur, for which I am indebted to Mr. Franz Groeger, of Vienna, formerly an assistant of the Royal Imperial Geological Institution, whose account of the general geology of Southern Africa was contained in a recent number of the proceedings of that Institution. The rock is apparently a sort. of tufa, evidently of volcanic origin. Mr. Groeger assured me that it could be seen in situ, bounded by uplifted stratified rocks; and that diamonds had been mined from it, by means of shafts, some distance below the surface. Groeger calls it " greenstone-tufa," and says of it, in the proceedings of the Geological Institution, " it breaks through the younger members of Group III [lower Trias and Jura], .... and crops out in oval masses, filling fissures.....The occurrence of this tufa is not locally limited, but has been traced and proved already over a large territory." Dr. Hunt remarked that the material looked like the trass of the Rhine region. He thought it a new occurrence for diamonds. He believed diamonds to belong to ancient crystalline rocks, although these materials might be brought up by volcanic agency, and the diamonds remain unaltered. In the volcanic rooks of Auvergne, crystals of sapphire, zircon, and spinel are found; and yet no one supposes that these minerals have been generated by volcanic agency. These are defined as the real-time operating system; a process data acquisition, reduction, and communication system; and a set of process-oriented systems which interface the operators and engineering staff to the process. The role of each of these three classes is reviewed. The software systems which provide reports, status displays, and trend graphs are discussed.

My subject covers the effect that recent metallurgy has had on operations at the Utah-Delaware mine. This mine is the old Highland Boy mine of Bingham Canyon, Utah, one that has now been in operation for about 30 years. It was first operated by Messrs. Weir and Newhouse as a gold mine, under direction of the Highland Boy Gold Mining Co. The ore was oxidized gold ore and it was treated on the property in a cyanida-tion plant. During the process of development, sulfide ore was found assaying about 5 per cent. copper. It proved to be the discovery of what is yet the largest sulfide copper orebody in the State. The first shipment was made in December, 1896. A smelter was built in Salt Lake Valley to treat this ore and not long after the property was sold to the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. From 1900 to 1924, the mine was a large producer of direct-smelting ore which averaged for many years 4.5 per cent. copper, then later dropped to 2 per cent. copper. During the years 1912 to 1920, direet-smelting lead ore was also mined. In 1918 and 1919 ore developments at depth showed a decided increase in silica content and a porphyry sill so closely associated with the ore that it was impossible to mine the ore clean and it was found necessary to build a copper flotation concentrator at Tooele. The mill had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and made a recovery of 90 per cent., and would have been responsible for a continuance of profitable operations had it not been for a slump in the copper market and the necessary high cost of mining ore on the lower levels. Results of Selective Flotation In 1924 the mine was on the point of a shutadown which had all the earmarks of being permanent; it was being operated at a heavy loss and preparations were made to pull the pumps and salvage the machinery. The plant at Tooele was remodelled for selective flotation by the International Smelting Co. in order to treat custom ores, and incidentally to clean up a possible 10,000 tons of lead-zinc ore which it was thought possible to get in the Utah-Delaware before shutting the mine down. The development of the mining industry in Sardinia dates from the application of the mining law of 1859, which, following the example of the French mining law of 1810, declared prospecting to be free, and suppressed the liens which had previously attached the mine to surface ownership. The first ore-dressing plants were installed by German engineers upon the classic models of the Harz and of Freiberg; but in 1880 Sardinia commenced to open a new path in that industry, utilizing the refuse from the mining of rich, selected minerals, of poor deposits, and of mixed ores. The first experiments were attempte to adapt the existing apparatus to local conditions, but progress was rapid, as was demonstrated already in 1887 by the calamine-dressing mill of Monte-poni, which exhibited a large plant designed in accordance with the experience gained, and constructed entirely in the machine-shops of the country, after new models and designs.' This example was followed two years later by the Sociékté Malfidano, with a large plant of the same sort, and with the reconstruction of the old-fashioned dressing-mill, built in 1880 by the Austro-Belgian Company. In 1900, almost all the mines of Sardinia had adopted the new designs, and the island contained 32 concen-trating-works, employing 2,000 h.p. and 1,924 workmen. Since that time, there have been added a large dressing-mill for blende at Gennamari, and two for calamine, at San Giovanni and at Masua, while the establishments at other mines have been enlarged and perfected. KEYES, Des Moines, Iowa (communication to the Secretary*):-It is with pleasure that I acknowledge the value and interest of the historical notes on early mining at Lake Valley, contributed by Messrs. MacDonald and Courtis. In my own paper there was no attempt to enter into this phase of the subject; partly for reason that the intention was to take up this in detail in another connection, partly because there was not space enough to. devote to it in a brief geologic paper, and partly on account of the fact that the strictly mining features are quite distinct from the purely geologic characteristics. As may be inferred from its perusal, the brief historical paragraph prefacing my paper was in reality geologic in its bearing. The events referred to therein relate to the published information concerning the geologic structure. The personages principally mentioned were noted merely to show how the names of several of our most distinguished scientists came to be closely associated with that of Lake Valley. Far from my intentions was it to slight the memory of any , of that brave band who, with lives in their hands, took so active a part in the early development of the mines. The value of their records is perhaps much greater than that of any published notes. The narratives of Messrs. MacDonald and Courtis are as thrilling as many other experiences related of that time and place. Few of us at the present time can appreciate the dangers of that early day, when the fierce Apache all but swept the. white man from that part of the country, when renegades from Texas overran the land, and when the outlaws of the nations took their last stand before advancing civilization. ERNST PROCHASKA, Bonne Terre, Mo. (written discussion*).-The special importance of this paper is the fact that it calls special attention to the existence of organic sulfur in coal. Many writers have denied the existence of a chemical compound of carbon with sulfur in coal, .but later investigations, and especially the paper by Fraser and Yancey, prove undeniably its existence. As we become more fully convinced of its existence and as the present methods of washing, either in a jig or on tables, are unable to separate the organic sulfur, it remains for an inven-tive genius to perfect a chemical washing process whereby the sulfur will be, dissolved out of the coal, or we must abandon entirely the washing of such coal.

The American Zinc Company’s mining operations in East Tennessee are located in Knox and Jefferson Counties. Mineralization occurs, intermittently, through a strike length of more than 30 miles, from near the eastern edge of Knoxville northeastward to a few miles beyond Jefferson City. The presence of zinc in these Counties has been known for well over 100 years. In 1910 it was brought to the attention of American Zinc Company that zinc sulphide deposits in the Mascot area might be attractive. Following an examination and some surface prospect drilling, the American Zinc Company of Tennessee was organized and acquired the Mascot properties in 1911. Operations began in 1913 on the basis of 1,000 tons per day mill capacity. With the successful operation of the Mascot mines, the Company undertook explorations in the area from Jefferson City southwest through Friends Station to Mascot. The efforts resulted in development of substantial tonnages of zinc ore and enabled the Company to expand the Mascot and New Market milling operations to their present capacity of 11,100 tons per day. AS part of a program to investigate phase relationships in ternary systems containing semiconducting elements and compounds, an X-ray survey of alloys in the system Pb-Te-Bi was carried out which revealed that the pair PbTe-Bi probably formed a quasibinary system. This portion of the ternary was examined fully by thermal analysis, X-ray, and microscopic procedures. More than twenty-five alloys were made by melting together the proper combinations of the elements in quartz tubes at a temperature of 1000o C. The compositions which were high in PbTe content were prepared in evacuated, sealed, quartz tubes, allowed to freeze in vacuum, and then transferred to Crucibles for thermal analysis. The bismuth-rich alloys were made directly in the crucibles under a protective gas cover. The starting elements were obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and had a purity greater than 99.99 pct. Cooling curves were made with about 50 g of alloy in graphite crucibles which were placed in a covered quartz container in which a protective atmosphere of helium or nitrogen was maintained. This paper covers a brief discussion of pumping 38° to 41° gravity oil from Wilcox sand wells ranging in depths from 4000 to 4900 ft. in the Seminole field, Oklahoma. As recently as a year ago it was the general belief among Seminole operators that most wells in that district could not be successfully or economically pumped. Also the idea was prevalent at that time that the crookedness of the rotary holes would cause a large amount of mechanical trouble and the use of the air-gas lift would leave the wells depleted with sand conditions and fluid levels unfavorable for pumping. At that time it was predicted that wells would be abandoned when the economic flowing and swabbing period was reached. Contrary to these beliefs it has been demonstrated that wells can be profitably pumped to limits as low as 10 bbl. of oil per day where conditions are favorable. The Serllinole field, unusual in its rapid development, has served as an experimental laboratory for many oil field pumping devices with which this paper will not concern itself. Discussion will be confined to equipment and methods in general use throughout the field. The outstanding features of equipment and pumping operations covered in this paper may be summarized as follows: 1. Pumping equipment from the standpoint of prime movers, energy cost, power transmission equipment, derricks, counterbalances, beam hangers, tubing, sucker rods, pumps, etc. 2. Pumping problems peculiar to the Seminole field, including the proper time at which to change from air-gas lift flowing to pumping. Pumping Equipment There have been no basic changes in pumping equipment in the past 20 years with the exception of some refinements in design brought about by the demand for equipment suitable for pumping deep wells. In view of the extensive use of vanning-machines in this country, a brief comparison of the results obtained by the plain belt generally employed, and the corrugated belt which was introduced a few years ago, may be of interest. The data given below have been abstracted from a working-journal, and hence lack the precision, and also, in several desirable particulars, the detail, which would naturally have been secured in special experiments ; but they have the advantage of being working-figures, and are sufficient as the basis of a fair comparison between the two kinds of belt working on similar ores. The agglomeration of hydrogen in pure aluminum and A1-Mg alloys has been studied through use of hydrogen introduced into the metal by cyclotron proton irradiation. Both the growth and dispersal of the agglomerates have been followed by metal-lographic techniques. During the cyclotron irradiation, agglomeration occurs at temperatures i 100°C for hydrogen concentrations as low as 1 ppm. On heating at elevated temperatures, 300°C to 600°C, intragranular agglomerates first coarsen and then disperse. The agglomerates formed at grain boundaries are much larger than the intragranular agglomerates; with hydrogen concentra- tions > 10 PPm, heating for 1 hr at 500°C results in extensive grain-boundary cracking. The hydrogen agglomerates have been shown to inhibit grain growth, but no inhibition of recrystallization has been observed. The ability of hydrogen to enter aluminum at a free surface, combined with its high-diffusion rate at elevated temperatures, accounts both for growth and dispersal of the agglomerates. The subject is one that is worth a great deal of thought and research at this time. It is a well-known fact that the strong affinity of steel or, iron for oxygen is perhaps the main detriment to sound production, and, as the author states, it is-indeed remarkable that today there are no analytical methods in general use in steel works for determining the gaseous con-stituents of steel.

THE second part of the mould for making guns is the core. Without this the space could not be made where the powder is to be and through which the ball, impelled by the fire, can pass and take flight. To make this it is necessary to take two things into consideration, because they are very important. One is what you are to make it on so that it may be supported and kept true. The other is what composition of clay will stand up during casting and yet not be very difficult to extract from the body of the finished gun. For the first, it is found that only an iron spindle of a suitable thickness is able to support the weight of the clay without bending under the heat of the fire or wobbling as it is turned on its journals or when handled. This should be a braccio or more longer than the mould of the gun and worked exactly round, straight, and well tapered like a spindle; above all every one of its joints should be well secured and solid. At the upper end a per-orated heel should be made, and lower down, exactly at the point corresponding to the length of the mould, are one or two other holes through which the little crossbars can be passed that fasten the core to the outer mould and also serve for constructing the disc. Now this iron is to be arranged on two trestles, pivoted so that it may turn truly when rotated. In order that it may not run up and down, make a little iron fork which engages a notch made with a file at the foot, and another at the head. After this, you must prepare clay for the core which is well made and tenacious ,enough not to crack. Fint take care that there are no pebbles in it and that it is composed of a small amount of cloth clippings and much sifted horse dung and some washed and clean wash ashes so that it may be of a tender and crumbly consistency in order that it may later be more easily extracted from the space inside the gun. In the same way, in order that you may be able to take out the iron piece at the same time, first cover it with ashes, and then wrap it all over with a rope of ordinary thickness, leaving a dito of the iron uncovered in every palmo length. FOR many years, the belief that the so-called "Clinton" sand of Ohio might produce. oil and gas, if it could be reached, has been prevalent in West Virginia. To test this theory, many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent and several extremely deep wells, including the deepest boring of the world, have been sunk at various points. With the exception of one well now completed through the sand and the possible exception of another still in progress, all of these wells failed to reach the goal, either through failure of funds or through drilling accidents. REVIEW OF DEEP DRILLING The subject of deep-sand oil and gas in West Virginia has already been discussed by the author1 and by White.2 In these papers, it was shown that the Upper and. Middle Devonian shales, lying between the Berea oil sand (basal Mississippian) and the Oriskany sandstone (Lower Devonian), thicken steadily from eastern Ohio across northern West Virginia and Pennsylvania; but it was stated that the same rate of thickening did not occur in that part of West Virginia south of the Great Kanawha River and in the adjoining portion of Kentucky. In spite of this great eastward thickening, the fact that both the Oriskany and "Clinton" sands, the latter of which is equivalent to the White Medina of New York, exist in great thickness all along the Appalachian Mountains farther east, was held as proof of their probable presence in the deep Appalachian basin.
