Magnetic iron-ore is found in many localities throughout this and other countries, in large bodies and in convenient proximity to other materials required for its conversion into iron and steel; and these bodies of ore would have great commercial value on account of their nearness to consuming markets if they were generally suitable in their natural state for use in the larger operations of steel-making. In the manufacture of iron and steel it has been found, however, that not all ores are equally valuable as sources of raw material for the finished products of furnace, forge and foundry; and, as is now well understood, this is because of the intrusion, in the process of formation of the ore-bodies, of substances which can enter into deleterious combinations with the iron itself, or form compounds associated with the iron oxide which will hinder, if they do not altogether prevent, the production therefrom of the higher grades of finished metal. It is only since the development of the modern method of steel-making by the Bessemer process that the art of the chemist has been called to a critical study of the nature and effect produced by the presence of these pernicious substances in the furnace while the iron is undergoing reduction to the metallic state. Phosphorus and sulphur are the most common and obnoxious elements, and the admixture of one or the other, or both of these, in small percentages and varying proportions, will greatly modify the final results of manufacture. It so happens that generally, although not always, these hurtful elements are found in compounds in the ore which are not magnetic, and this circumstance has led to the expenditure of much ingenuity and money over a long period of time, in attempts to utilize the attractive power of magnets to separate the magnetic oxide of iron out of its crushed ores and from sands, in

If there is one thing that makes a fellow feel like the years are catching up with him, it is to go through a second cycle in which the adequacy of mineral resources is being "viewed with alarm." The first time we experienced such a flap was in 1951. At that time, the United Nations convened a meeting at Lake Success to study ways and means of averting a crisis in minerals. Presently there is some sentiment being expressed about the mineral scarcities that will occur in the decades ahead, in view of world population trends and increasing per capita consumption of metals. To be greatly concerned about the adequacy of metal supplies is to be highly pessimistic about the capabilities of technology. As in the past, shortages will be of temporary duration for as far ahead as the most ambitious prognosticators are projecting. The study of mineral economics is a fascinating and surprising subject. The law of supply and demand is but a starting point. The iron ore market for the steel industry is an example which comes to mind because of our receipt this week of the United Nations report "Survey of World Iron Ore Resources."

The following abstract of an unpublished treatise, prepared by me, on the geological formations and minerals of the State of Alabama, is deemed of interest to the Institute. This State, called after the river of the same name (which, formed by the junction of the Coosa and the Tallapoosa, waters, with its tributaries, more than half the State), is divided by its main watershed into a larger southern district, sloping south and southwest, and drained into the Gulf of Mexico, and a smaller northern district, sloping generally north and west, and drained into the Tennessee. Geologically the State may be divided (according to historical geology) according to the different formations it exhibits, among which I include the Azoic, the existence of which in Alabama has been doubted by some; or it may be divided (according to structural geology, as closely related to topography) into a north and northwestern, a middle, and a southern zone.

The two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of a solid are its intrinsic properties, e.g.,grain size, and the operative stress system. The latter may be modified in laminates by the presence of weak interfaces. This is studied in notch-impact tests on a mode1 system of mild steel laminates containing a variety of interfaces. The effect of these is evaluated in terms of the ductile/cleavage transition. Two laminate geometries are distinguished, here called "crack-arrester " and "crack-divider". In both, cleavage is inhibited. This arises because of relaxation of a state of triaxial tension. In the crack-avrester laminates, cleavage initiated at a notch is confined to the layer containing the notch. In crack-cliuider laminates, a thick specimen behaves as the Sum of a number of thinner ones. Additional benefit may derive from improved intritnsic propevties of- the lanlinate layers arising from greater deformation in their manufacture. It has long been recognized that the two most important parameters controlling the fracture behavior of solids are their intrinsic properties (e.g., grain size friction stress,3 distribution of second phase particles4) and the operative stress system under which fracture occurs. In solids that show a ductile/cleavage transition, cleavage is favored by the presence of a notch. This is because triaxial tensions, generated by the localized plastic constraint at the notch, are operative when fracture occurs.= Anything that suppresses these triaxial tensions will be unfavorable to cleavage. Such suppression may possibly occur in laminates containing weak interfaces and the purpose of the present paper is to explore this possibility. Two basic laminate geometries, here termed "crack-avrester" and "cvack-divider", are examined. They are illustrated in Fig. 1. With the crack-arrester laminates, there is the possibility that, when the fracture crack approaches the interface, this, if weak, may delaminate due to the tensile stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack.= If this happens, energy will be used in delamination, the crack will be completely blunted, and the triaxial tension associated with the crack will be relaxed. To fracture the second portion of the laminate, crack reinitiation will be necessary and, because of the relaxation of the triaxial tension, this reinitiation will occur under conditions of nearly uniaxial tension, which are unfavorable to cleavage. Thus there is the possibility of cleavage suppression in the second and subsequent subunits of a crack-arrester laminate. With the crack-divider geometry, there is again the possibility of delamination at the interfaces. This will divide the crack into a series of cracks propagating through the individual laminate subunits. If these are sufficiently thin, the triaxial tension will be relaxed towards a state of biaxial tension in each of them. Thus, with the crack-divider laminates, there is again the possibility of cleavage inhibition. In the present work, these possibilities are explored using a notched impact test on mild steel laminates bonded with soft solder, silver solder or copper. Even if delamination does not occur, it is still possible that cleavage may be inhibited in laminates. With the crack-arrester geometry, the cleavage crack in the first layer may be blunted and arrested by plastic deformation in the laminate bond, if this is ductile. Partial relaxation of the stress transmitted ahead of the crack into the second layer will then result and this will reduce the significance of this stress in the fracture of the second layer. With the crack-divider geometry, there cannot be much effect in the absence of delamination unless a large amount of energy is absorbed in rupturing the ductile material. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The composition of the mild steel (wt pet) was: 0.04 C, 0.29 Mn, 0.01 Si, 0.006 P, 0.008 S. "As-received" plate was annealed for 2 hr at 900°C and slowly cooled to give a grain size of 0.04 mm. The laminates were made by brazing or soldering together mild steel plates 8 by 3 in. by various thicknesses. These were obtained from the annealed plate by machining, so that the intrinsic material properties were .kept constant. Laminates containing two to six steel layers were studied using standard Charpy V-notch specimens cut from the bonded plates. IN recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. [ ] The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing i8 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic 15-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wettability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS The maximum liquidus temperature of a solder is determined by the particular application involved and the temperature that can be obtained by the source of heat.

Since many accounts of Silver Islet Mine, in Lake Superior, have already been published, it is supposed that the members of the Institute are familiar with the location and character of the mine. To many, however, a more detailed account of the ore and manner of treatment will, perhaps, not be without interest. The extraordinary richness of Silver Islet ores, and the difficulty of obtaining correct assays, induced the company to erect smelting works of its own. Accordingly, ground was broken at Wyandotte; Mich., early in the spring of 1871, and the work was pressed on with indomitable energy by Captain E. B. Ward of Detroit, as president, and Mr. Thomas MacFarlane, the discoverer of Silver Islet, as superintendent of the works, so that by July 1st the works were so far completed that smelting could be commenced. The intention was to work Western ores with those from Lake Superior, since the latter contain but a small amount of lead. Hence the capacity of the works is much larger than is needed for the present yield of the mine. The planned process for treatment was smelt-

An insight into the mechanism of electrocrystallization of copper in simulated commercial acid electrolytes has been surmised from scanning electron microscope analysis of laboratory prepared specimens. The growth takes place in three overlapping stages. In he first, lasting approximately one hour at 200 amps/sq m, a propensity to epitaxial growth is observed. During the second stage a preferred orientation developed. The crystallography of the deposit showed a strong preferred orientation with the [111] direction normal to the surface. Triangular pyramids with (111) faces and (111) texture is a common result. In the third stage, occuring at longer deposition times, side growth, dendrite-like branching is common. The obsermtions have some elements in common with published results for highly purified electrolytes. Several significant differences were observed. The truncated pyramidal and block type growth discussed in he literature is suppressed under the conditions studied. The results are briefly discussed in terms of the screw dislocation, fault, and layer type growth mechanisms of crystal growth.

It seems proper, before describing the plant which has been erected in Rome, N. Y., for the purpose of demonstrating the practicability of my process of refining and desilverizing lead by electrolysis, to state in a few words the principles that govern the process. They are well known to those who have studied electrical science, and to the practical electro-platers of the country, and are briefly these: If we take a plate, or other form, of metal (impure lead in this case), and immerse it in a bath consisting of a solution of the main metal (that which contains the impurities), and also immerse another plate, which shall be a conductor of electricity, in the bath, but separated from the first by the solution, and connect the former plate with the positive pole of the source of electricity, and the other plate with the negative pole, an action will go on in this bath which is called electrolysis. There is first a decomposition of the solution constituting the bath ; then a solution of the metal at the positive pole (called the anode), and a deposition upon the other plate connected with the negative pole. which plate is technically called the cathode. If the bath is properly constituted, and the current of electricity which is passed through the bath is of the proper strength and electro-motive force, the dissolution of the anode and the deposition of the metal upon the cathode will be exactly equivalent. The analysis and synthesis are opposite and equal. If, on the other hand, this solution (called an electrolyte) be not properly constituted, decomposition will go on, but there will be these effects: a superoxidation at the anode and a liberation of free hydrogen at the cathode, which free hydrogen escapes finally in bubbles through the liquid to the surface, and into the atmosphere. IN a recent survey of the literature, the author has found evidence incompatible with prevalent views regarding the technical cohesive strength and yield strength of metals. Some of the evidence regarding the technical cohesive strength was presented in a previous paper,21 and views were presented that are believed to be in better accord with the evidence. In that paper, it was shown that the technical cohesion limit (contrary to prevalent views) varies with the combination of principal stresses,† and that the influence of plastic deformation on the technical cohesive strength is not in accordance with prevalent views. In this paper, consideration will be given to both the technical cohesion limit and the yield stress as affected by the combination of principal stresses. Evidence will be presented that the variations of the yield stress and the technical cohesion limit with the combination of principal stresses are not in accordance with prevalent views. Consideration will also be given to ductility and work-hardening capacity, which depend on the initial difference between the technical cohesion limit and the yield stress. By the "technical cohesion limit" is meant the mean stress at actual or potential* fracture. An example of a technical cohesion limit is the "true" breaking stress of a tension-test specimen, the breaking load divided by the sectional area at fracture. The cohesion limit thus obtained for a ductile metal, however, has been greatly altered by the plastic deformation. It is important to consider the cohesion limit of the metal prior to this deformation, and the variation of the cohesive strength with plastic deformation. The relation between the cohesion limit and the corresponding flow stress† determines the ductility of a metal and the energy that it will absorb before fracture. In this paper, as in the previous paper,21 tensile stresses will be viewed as positive and compressive stresses as negative. The algebraically greatest principal stress will be designated S1, the least principal stress will be designated S3, and the intermediate principal stress will be designated S2. In the previous paper, attention was confined to stress combinations with two of the principal stresses equal (with the intermediate principal stress S2 equal either to S3 or S1). In this paper, consideration will also be given to the effect of stress combinations with all three principal stresses unequal. The zinc-lead blast furnace process has been installed by two smelters in Japan. In 1966 a unit was commissioned at Harima in Hyogo prefecture by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. and in 1969 a consortium of other Japanese zinc and lead smelters completed their unit at Hachinohe in Aomori prefecture, managed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Go. Ltd. , the major shareholders. The special characteristics of these two plants are described with particular emphasis on their location and operation. Reference is also made to the processing of a wide range of raw materials, including residues from other processes. Both plants pay scrupulous attention to plant and environmental hygiene to meet the high standards set by the local prefectural governments; the ways in which this has been achieved are discussed. General performance data on each furnace is included, showing that this pyrometallurgical process is supplying 16% of Japan's zinc and refined lead consumption. An expression for the diffusion coefficient of inlerstitial atoms in the bcc lattice is derived which takes account of jumps between tetrahedral and octahedral interstices. The results are applied to the case of carbon diffusion in iron to find values for jump frequencies of the types, octahedral-tetrahedral, tetra-hedral-tetrahedral, and tetrahedral-octahedral. ThERE has been renewed discussion1-5 concerning the mechanism of diffusion of interstitial atoms in the bcc lattice. This lattice has both octahedral and tetrahedral interstices, and it has been pointed out that the interstitial atoms may make jumps of the octahedral-octahedral type, hereafter called o-o, octahedral-tetrahedral, o-t, and tetrahedral-tetrahedral, t-t. Doubt has been cast on the applicability of snoek's8 model for internal friction to some interstitial migrations in bcc lattices wherein he proposed 0-0 jumps as the principal mechanism of migration. Also, the anomalous excess diffusion of carbon in iron at high temperatures4 has been ascribed to t-t jumps,2,3 even though the sites normally occupied are octahedral. In this paper an expression is derived for the diffusion coefficient, taking account of the three types of jump mentioned. The relationship of the coefficient to the corresponding internal friction relaxation time is found for the limiting case corresponding to Snoek's model. These results are applied to the case of carbon in iron. In Fig. 1, the structure is shown with the locations of the interstices. Each o site has four t site neighbors coplanar with it, and each t site lies halfway between two o sites. There are four t site first neighbors of a t site lying at the vertices of a tetrahedron. FRom a study of sulfur with reference to its specific combination in coal, published as University of Illinois Bulletin No. 111, 1919, it is now possible to determine the various forms of this constituent with a good degree of accuracy. This fact suggests two questions: (1) Are the same analytic methods applicable to coke? (2) Is there any correlation between the forms of sulfur as it occurs in coal and the residual sulfur found in the finished coke? The answer to the second question might be helpful in answering a still further question as to what chemical route the sulfur travels during the carbonization process. While the special studies along these several lines are by no means complete, a few preliminary statements are herewith presented. They may, at least, prove suggestive of further possibilities from a continuation of research along these lines. There is no reason, chemically, why the analytic methods devised for coal should not apply to coke and a fair amount of experience in connection with such use affords confirmation of this statement. The procedure in the case of coal may be briefly outlined as follows: Combinations of sulfur as sulfate, or sulfides other than FeS2, are readily dissolved without disturbing either the pyrite sulfur or the sulfur that is in organic combination by means of dilute hydrochloric acid— 1 part of concentrated HC1 to 10 parts of water or approximately 3 per cent. acid. Digestion at 60" C. for 24 hr. insures the complete removal of the sulfur thus combined. In freshly mined coal the amount of such sulfur is very small; weathering processes, however, may very materially increase the amount of sulfate present. Sulfur in the form of iron pyrites, or marcasite, may be quantitatively removed without oxidation of the organic sulfur as follows: A dilute solution of nitric: acid is prepared having 1 part of concentrated HNO3 to 3 parts of water or with an approximate specific gravity of 1.12. The coal sample, ground to 100 mesh, is digested with this solution at room temperature for 3 or 4 days, filtered and evaporated to dryness, taken up with water, and acidified with hydrochloric acid. It is now ready for precipitation with barium chloride in the usual manner. If sulfate is present in the original sample to an appreciable amount, it should be removed by the procedure outlined above. It is not necessary here to give the methods for determining the two

THE Rio de Canada Honda placer property is situated at an altitude of 5500 ft. above sea level in the San Luis Mountains of the Province of San Luis, Argentina. The mine is reached by 70 km. of fair truck road, from the nearest railway station on the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacifico. The Pan-American airport at Villa Mercedes, 1.40 km. distant, serves as the most convenient point for shipment of gold. Placer mining in the Rio de Canada Honda dates from the time of the Incas and the present native population depends on the gold washed from this river and the adjacent arroyos as a means of livelihood as did the many generations before them. They dig pits to bedrock where they are not driven out by water, and mine the bedrock gravel by means of tunnels and caves. No timber is available and the ground is supported by rock cribs carefully built with the boulders encountered; or with angular blocks of slate rock taken from quarries on the surface.

Tun mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic limestones of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft. the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances away from the zone of contact metamorphism.

A CONSIDERABLE interest in the subject of superlattices has been mani-fested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explana-tion of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random posi-tions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe'st "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of this tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 have dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work on superlattices. Excellent discussions of superlattices are to be found in current reviews.3,4

Great strides have been made during the past few years in the field of rock mechanics, and steps have been taken to implement our newly acquired knowledge to advance the mining industry and improve the lot of the miner. This article is a summary of the latest progress in those areas of rock mechanics indicated by the subtitles. Let's look at these new tools for mining men. GROUND STABILITY DETERMINATIONS Much valuable information in the field of rock mechanics can be obtained by relatively simple, inexpensive measurements and observations, and this kind of investigation can be classed under the general heading of "Ground Stability Determinations." The instrumentation involved in this type of work is relatively simple and inexpensive, and its operation is not difficult to understand.1,2 Precise deformation measurements accurate to a few thousandths of an inch are very helpful in detecting stope convergence, pillar compression, floor heave, etc. Such measurements recorded over a period of weeks and months will detect and forwarn against failure of the overall mine structure long before any other visual evidence can be observed. Such advance warning then permits the introduction of sufficient artificial support in time to do some good. Instead of precise measurements which must be made with a special instrument, sensitive warning lights can be used which will flash red upon sensing movements as small as .002 or .003 in. These devices are well received by miners, and very practical under noisy conditions. High precision is important tit this area, but in large openings, engineer's tapes plus machinists scales reading to .01 in. may be sufficient. Uniform tensioning of the tape is of course essential. Long term, precise measurements have shown repeatedly that opening convergence lends to be slow and uniform except when accelerated to sudden large displacements by blasting, rock bursts or other sudden large scale failures. It is interesting to note that measurements in South Africa in very deep mines have shown 40% of the closure was footwall rise, and only 60% was hanging-wall sag.

THE technical cohesive strength of a metal means, not the interatomic forces, but the technically estimated resistance to fracture. An example of such resistance to fracture is the so-called "true" breaking stress of a tension-test specimen, the breaking load divided by the sectional area at fracture, According to the prevalent view,8 the technical cohesive strength of a metal, in any particular state as regards prior mechanical treatment and heat-treatment, is determined by a limiting value of the algebraically greatest principal stress.? In two previous papers by one of the authors,14,15 evidence was presented to indicate that the technical cohesive strength of a metal cannot be represented by a single stress value, but that it comprises an infinite number of values corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits, each representing a specific stress combination at fracture. In the same papers, evidence was presented that plastic extension causes a continuous increase in the technical cohesive strength. Such a variation is not in accordance with the prevalent view that plastic extension first increases, then decreases, the technical cohesive strength.8 In this paper, as in the previous papers,14,15 the algebraically greatest principal stress will be designated S1, the least principal stress will be designated S3, and the intermediate principal stress will be designated S2. The technical cohesion limit under polarsymmetric tension (S1 = S2 = S3) will be termed the "disruptive stress," and the cohesion limit under unidirectional tension (S2 and S3 = o) will be termed the "severing stress." 14,15 The yield strength of a metal, according to the generally accepted theory, may be represented by a constant value of the shearing-strain energy, and hence by a constant value of the sum of the squares of the three principal stress differences. In the second of the previous papers,"' however, evidence was presented that the limiting yield stress decreases with increase in the volume stress, the algebraic average of the three principal stresses.* This influence of the volume stress becomes prominent only in the field of triaxial tension. In the two previous papers, 14,15 diagrams were presented to show the variation of the technical cohesion limit, yield stress, and ultimate stress with the combination of principal stresses and with plastic extension. An essential mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new facts of importance will be revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore—that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. The Russian-American Co., which long held control of the territory, was entirely absorbed in the exploitation of its fur trade,
