The strength of a natural serpentinite gouge was measured at 400°C and an effective pressure of 100 MPa. The strength of the gouge decreased with increasing pore pressure to 50 MPa and then was nearly constant between 50 and 125 MPa. The samples at 50-125 MPa pore pressure slid stably, whereas those at 3-25 MPa pore pressure showed stick-slip behavior. Lengthening the pre-heating time to 72,000 s of samples at 100 MPa pore pressure led to increases in both the strength and the likelihood of sliding unstably. With still longer pre-heating times, the strengths decreased again and sliding once more became stable. The strength of the gouge at 3 MPa pore pressure was unaffected by changes in pre-heating time. A possible explanation for the results is that excess pore pressures are being generated in the gouge, causing the true effective pressure to be lower than the apparent value.

A description of the methods used in driving two tunnels, 2 miles long each, one a 9-ft. and the other a 19-ft. diameter section, for the Owyhee Irrigation Project, Oregon. One heading of the smaller tunnel was driven 1315 ft. in 73 shifts in one month and 10,966 ft. of this section completed in ll½ months using two shifts for eight months and three shifts the rest of the time. This is a good illustration of the proper use of a mechanical shovel and the importance of careful selection of supplernentary equipment to secure best results. Large cars, speedier and heavier locomotives, 36-in. gage track of 45-lb. rail, and a good switching method increased actual shoveling time and cut down muck removal period about 45 minutes from average. The larger tunnel, after trying out standard electric revolving shovels of both the rail mounting and caterpillar tread types, was excavated with a mechanical mucker. This is the first time that a tunnel of so large a section has been handled this way. This record work was accomplished without drill carriages.

Within the past few months I have had occasion to visit and examine the area of country in Gunnison county locally called the Gold Belt and extending from the Cebolla river on the west to the head of Taylor Park and the Sawatch range on the east. The region including the "belt" may be hided topographically into two parts, a northern and a southern one. The former is characterized by lofty mountains and deep canons, with occasional parks and wide valleys. Most of it is included in the granitic system of the Sawatch range, with local patches of the Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, more or less traversed by great bodies of porphyry and other eruptive rocks. The southern portion, on the other hand, is characterized by comparatively low, rounded hills of schist and sahistose gneisses, underlain by coarse, massive granite, which outcrops locally in small, and sometimes in large, patches. These hills also sometimes form table-lands by reason of overflows of lavas, such as andesitic breccia, rhyolite, trachyte and basalt. The leading geological feature is that of a schistose area of width and extent unusual for Colorado. These schists and gneisses are of pre-Cambrian age; but whether assignable to the Algonkian or to some older system has not been determined. The granite which occasionally outcrops from beneath these schists is, I think, of true eruptive character, since its mode of occurrence indicates a once molten, or at least highly viscous or plastic, condition. Thus, we may observe, included in its mass, numerous fragments of schist, almost like a coarse, volcanic breccia. Again, at its immediate contact with the schists, which often stand vertically upon it, the pediments of the latter are fused into the granite, and granite tongues and veins run up amongst the schists, as only a molten or viscous

A historical comparison of the frequency of fatal coal mining accidents occurring underground in mines of various size ranges in the United States and in member countries of the Commission of the European Communities is presented. Frequencies are normalized on hours-worked and tons-produced bases. The comparisons rely on published and confirmed data and on theory for selective treatment of data in an effort to overcome reporting differences and basic differences in the mining conditions and system employed. Trends are identified ad projections made of the effect on accident records of various industry growth patterns. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for differences between the records of U.S. underground coal mines and the records of those mines in European countries.

A description of some of the magnetic ore-deposits in this region should be of interest to the mining and metallurgical public, inasmuch as very little has been said or written concerning them. I refer to the magnetite deposits of Franklin and Henry counties, Va., and of Stokes county, N. C. These deposits remained comparatively unexplored until recently, when the construction of the Roanoke & Southern R. R. through this territory has called attention to them, by furnishing the means of transportation for the ores. It is true that the ores have long been known, at least locally, and were smelted in catalan forges and old-fashioned, cold-blast charcoal-furnaces long before and during the late war. At the present time, however, the old workings are caved in, filled up and over-grown to such an extent that, as a rule, but little can be learned from them. No prospecting of any consequence has been done, and as my time was too limited and the territory to be examined too extensive to permit additional openings of a more satisfactory nature to be made, the incormpleteness of some of the data I have to offer (notably, those referring to the absolute width of the veins) will be pardoned. It will hardly be necessary to say that this ore-bearing formation belongs to the Archaean, or Eozoic age, the usually occurring rocks being schist, shale, gneiss, granite, sandstone and quartzite. The stratigraphy is, as a rule, quite regular (excepting in the Danbury section, Stokes county, N. C.), the general strike being northeast and southwest, and the dip nearly vertical. Plans for the Petroleum Division during the ensuing year are in process of development, in contemplation of the usual fall meetings in the Mid-Continent and California areas, as well as the annual meeting to be held in New York in February, 1936. Houston, Texas has been suggested as the place for the Mid-Continent fall meeting, the exact date to be announced shortly. During the past year, the Division's technical programs, as in former years, have emphasized the wide fields of engineering endeavor in the petroleum industry yet remaining for more thorough investigation and discussion. An effort has been made to bring an international interest into the proceedings of the Division by inviting the participation of prominent foreign technologists. This viewpoint should promote a continuation in 1935 of past high standards, afford a more thorough understanding of problems throughout the membership, and maintain the Institute's position among the various technical organizations functioning particularly in the oil-producing and refining areas. In the list of subjects proposed for the fall meetings is the problem of estimating petroleum reserves. Various factors requiring study will include productive sand volume, porosity, average permeability, saturation, and types of recovery. Research papers are proposed dealing with energy consumption per unit of oil recovered, reservoir pressure or energy loss relationship to the usual volumetric method of estimation, and the study of oil and gas segregation within the reservoir. Other subjects tentatively suggested include new casing practice in relationship to wells producing from several productive zones, progress in lifting methods, repressuring, advanced methods in drilling economies, and the economics of conservation. Although the threat of overproduction yet remains, to a lesser degree than during the past few years, intensive activity is now being directed towards the discovery of new petroleum reserves. This situation undoubtedly will influence, in some considerable degree, the channels through which technical activities will be directed. A continuation of the commendable work on production statistics for the various oil-producing states and foreign countries has been effected. The usual papers dealing with the general economics of the industry will be reserved for the annual New York Meeting. The Stabilization Committee maintains its membership of nationwide authorities, and interest is manifest in new developments to meet the changing requirements of the industry.

WHEN I was an undergraduate at the Columbia School of Mines, the mining curriculum was subdivided into two major branches's known respectively as the Metallurgical and the Geological Options, which diverged rather widely as the course progressed. When I duly elected the Geological Option, I believed, I am sure, that this divergence would continue throughout the years. The facts have proved otherwise. The mining industry is a closely knit entity in which the search for its raw materials, called mining geology, cannot be separated from the conversion of these raw materials into marketable form, called metallurgy. The mining geologist searches for materials which the metallurgist can utilize, and only such; and whenever an advance in metallurgy opens the gates for new materials, the geologist's problem is correspondingly modified. No better instance of this relationship can be given than that seen in the Salt Lake region in recent years. Our mineral industry here is of long standing. The three principal tributary districts, Bingham, Park City and Tintic, were discovered in the 1860's and have been vigorously and intelligently developed for many decades. Their production has made the Salt Lake valley one of the world's great smelting centers. The maintenance of this industry has for years depended upon the continual development of new orebodies to take the place of those being extracted. Intensive exploration in the old districts has been supplemented by prospecting in outlying districts of lesser prominence. . Many new orebodies have been discovered, such as those of the Daly West, Silver King, and Judge mines in Park City, the Utah Apex in Bingham, and the Sioux, Colorado Chief Consolidated and Tintic Standard in Tintic. New mines in other districts have been discovered also, but without affecting the dominance of the three major districts. In all cases discoveries, to be of value, had to be of ore amenable to treatment in the available metallurgical plants. This meant that, for the most part, zincy ores, both oxide and sulfide, must remain untouched, and also that ores high in iron and ores high in silica had a fictitious value, either high or low, set by the balance of these

IN crushing and grinding the larger particles are more exposed to the work input. They absorb most of the work and protect the smaller neighboring particles from destructive contact with the crushing surfaces or grinding media. The importance of this exposure differential upon the reduction efficiency and product size distribution has long been recognized. Unfortunately, there has heretofore been no direct method of evaluating it, and such indirect methods as observing the slope of the plotted product size distribution line have been used as an indication. In this presentation the Third Theory of Comminution1 has been used, together with the exponential formula for size distribution, to evaluate the exposure ratio and exposure constant and to illustrate examples of their utility in crushing and grinding applications.

The nonuniform distribution of precipitate particles has been recognized as a leading factor contributing to the relatively low fatigue resistance of aluminum alloys. The structure of many of these alloys is characterized by narrow precipitate-free zones adjacent to the grain boundaries. Alloys with such zones exhibit a tendency for brittle inter crystalline fracture. The interrelation between this type of structure and mechanical properties was investigated in an Al-10 wt pct Mg alloy. It was found that deformation during fatigue occurs preferentially along these zones and cracks initiate there. In Al-10wt pct Mg, the zones were found to be supersaturated even after extensive general precipitation and are due to the absence of proper precipitate nuclei in the region near the grain boundaries. Cold working the alloy prior to aging improves the mechanical properties by inducing precipitation within the zones and also by jogging of grain boundaries. The mode of fracture is changed from brittle inter crystalline to more ductile trans granular fracture. THE process of fatigue is highly structure sensitive, with the strength of the whole often dependent upon some localized discontinuity, either geometrical or metallurgical in nature. Much has been learned about the role of geometrical discontinuities, e.g., notches, in fatigue, but with the exception of the effects of inclusions or the shapes of carbides, relatively little is known about the specific effects of discontinuities in metallurgical structure such as nonuniform precipitation. In most age-hardening aluminum alloys, metallo-graphic studies have shown that the extent of precipitation adjacent to grain boundaries is much less than that which occurs in the interior of the grains. The width of these almost precipitate-free regions, which are sometimes called denuded zones, and the extent of solute depletion within them, are dependent upon the particular alloy and its aging treatment. It has been observed1 that these zones are relatively soft with the result that plastic deformation takes place preferentially within them. It has also been shown 2-4 that there exists a tendency for intercrys- talline cracking in fatigue when such zones are present. It is of interest to note that Broom et al.2,3 were able to reduce the incidence of this type of failure in an A1-4 wt pct Cu alloy by stretching the material 10 pct prior to aging. In the present study, the effects of precipitate-free regions on the fatigue properties of an A1-10 wt pct Mg alloy were studied in detail, and the effects of deformation prior to aging on the nature of the precipitation process as well as on fatigue properties were also investigated. MATERIAL AND PROCESSING An A1-10 wt pct Mg alloy was selected for this study, because it was known that well-defined precipitate-free regions along the grain boundaries are readily obtained in this alloy after aging at 200oC.5 The starting materials were 99.998 pct A1 and singly sublimed magnesium of about 99.9 pct purity. The aluminum was induction melted in a graphite crucible, and then the magnesium addition was immersed until dissolved. Chlorine gas was then bubbled through the molten alloy for 4 min to degas the melt, after which the melt was cast at a pouring temperature of 730" to 760°C into a cold, graphite-coated, tapered steel mold. Since A1-Mg alloys are difficult to homogenize,5 special care was taken to obtain a uniform composition. Two-in. cubes were cut from the ingot and heated at 446°C for 30 min. These cubes were then hot forged approximately 35 pct in each of the three cube directions and homogenized for 16 hr at 446°C. Sheet specimens were then obtained by pressing 40 pct and rolling 35 pct per pass with reheating between reduction steps to a final thickness of approximately 0.10 in. The sheet was then solution treated for 16 hr at 446°C and water quenched. The age hardening behavior of this material at 200°C was then determined, and the results are shown in Fig. 1. The age hardening of this alloy when subjected to cold work prior to aging is also shown in this figure. Preliminary work indicated that extensive deformation after quenching was required to affect drastically the precipitate-free regions in this alloy, and a rolling reduction of 50 pct was chosen. More economical methods of rock disintegration are needed for mining and for rapid excavation. Two major systems are drill and blast and mechanical excavation, including tunnel-boring machines. Current drill and blast methods are cyclic and there- fore limited in speed of operation. Boring machines are limited to moderately hard rock due to bearing and cutter wear. The recent development of ANFO, which has reduced blasting costs markedly, was largely fortuitous because of the method of manufacturing AN prills. New slurries and fluid explosives are easy to load and have high energy-pressure characteristics.

The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. H. M. BOYLSTON, Cambridge, Mass.-I would first like to ask what machine Capt. Bellis used to make his tests on impact strength. I have made some tests with the Charpy impact machine, the specimen being supported at both ends and nicked in the middle, and, find that the results do not always agree with those obtained by the Izod and other machines. I would also like to ask what effect the composition and heat treatment of the tool steel had on the drilling of his rifle barrels, as compared, with the heat treatment of the steel itself? I notice that the analysis of the composition of steel used shows sulphur 0.050 and phosphorus 0.065; I should like to ask how those high limits of sulphur and phosphorus came to be allowed? I have some data which lead me to feel pretty certain that those high limits make for very unsafe steel in rifle barrels. It has never been explained to the satisfaction of all of us, why the manganese is so high: 1.22 per cent. I believe several reasons have been stated; among them, that it is high in order to compensate for the high sulphur, and also to increase the elastic limit and improve other physical properties of steel. Lastly, I wish to ask whether Capt. Bellis has tried any different methods of heat-treating his steel rifle barrels? Apparently these were all heat-treated before machining; has he had any experience with heat-treatment after machining, especially after drilling? Those questions may seem somewhat outside of the range of this -paper, but they are important, and if Captain Bellis can give us any information, it will be very helpful. Dr. J. A. MATHEWS,* Syracuse, N. Y.-The same subject was discussed here last year, and the earlier papers by Dr. Carle Hayward seem to indicate that nothing was gained by the length of time of 'tempering. (It should be borne in mind that his results were based upon electrical and magnetic measurements and not upon tensile tests.) That idea has been accepted as gospel by steel workers, until late years, and particu-larly in connection with alloy steels, on which there is no question that the effect of time of tempering is very marked.

M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. FOREWORD-In an interview published in the May 1975 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, one of the world's most respected scientists, nuclear physicist Hans Bethe discussed the reliability of nuclear power plants and their unmatched safety record. The Nobel laureate also refuted the anti-nuclear lobby's claims that nuclear plants emit harmful radioactive effluents. When asked whether the US has sufficient uranium resources, Dr. Bethe replied that "it depends on the time of introduction of the commercial and advanced breeder reactors which, in effect, can generate more nuclear fuel than they consume." The United States has enough U3O8 to last until the breeders can take over in 1995, said Dr. Bethe. But lie warned that extensive environmental damage would be caused if "environmentalists" succeed in delaying the development of the breeder. Any such delays, he noted, would vastly increase the demand for U3O8 in conventional reactors; this, in turn, would impose an immense burden on the US uranium mining industry, which would then have no alternative but to mine the low-grade Chattanooga deposits.

In the recent litigation for the possession of franklinite by one party and of zinc-ore by the other party, it was shown by the evidence of experts familiar with the original condition of the outcrops that at Mine Hill a more or less disticctly defined layer of red zincore underlay the heavier and larger body of the franklinite, so-called ; this layer or bed of zinc-ore dipping under the franklinite upon the western cropping, while at Stirling Hill, two miles south, the conditions were apparently reversed, the zinc-ore overlying the franklinite. An explanation being required, it was shown, first, that at both places, at Mine Hill on the north and at Stirling Hill on the south, the ore-bed lies in a synclinal or trough-like fold with the red zincore under the franklinite; and secondly, that at Mine Hill, we see chiefly the outcrop of the western part of the folded bed and at Stirling Hill the eastern part; the Mine Hill cropping being on the western slope, and the Stirling Hill cropping on the eastern slope of the hill. Thus the ''back vein" at Stirling (the western outcrop) corresponds with the front-vein at Mine Hill, and, like it, has the red zinc-ore on the foot-wall, while the front-vein or eastern cropping at Stirling corresponds to the back-vein or eastern cropping at Mine Hill in the part of the bed generally known as the " buckwheat-field vein." If the ore-bed were continuous in one synclinal trough between the two localities, no further explanation would be required. But it is not so ; and the synclinal folds at both places pitch steeply to the north, bringing the beds to the surface in horseshoe-like curves at their southern ends or croppings, and carrying the beds far below the surface northwards. LIEBERMANN.-As mentioned in my paper, a special investigation was made on the effect of dirt on the track, for the -express purpose of educating mine operators to the advantage of keeping their tracks clean. As to the benefit of clean tracks to the saving in battery consumption, that can be easily determined if the rate of discharge is known under existing conditions, that is, on dirty tracks. The tests have shown that tracks covered with coal dust cause an increase in draw-bar pull of about 30 per cent. The battery discharge table will show the capacity corresponding to the new rate of discharge and will thereby disclose the possible saving in battery consumption. The difference between dirty tracks and clean tracks will be found large enough to have an appreciable effect on the size of the storage-battery locomotive, and for a locomotive of any given size it may mean
