AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

The 27th Regiment of Engineers was organized in the Army not long ago for special mining service at the front (or, we might even say, in advance of the front). In military engineering in warfare, the "sappers and miners" are one of the ancient branches of the corps of engineers; but in modern warfare the importance of this service has been greatly magnified. The 27th Engineers is a. special mining regiment, which is being recruited from mining engineers and miners from all districts of the country, already containing representatives from all the mining states between Arizona and Montana and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Those of us who cannot go to the front should not-be content to tell the young fellows to go, and then forget them. We want the men of the 27th Engineers to know that they represent our industry and their industry; and that the industry is going to think about them and back them up. Expressing the above views, the Engineering and. Mining Journal instituted a fund for the aid of the 27th Engineers. It has already raised a considerable sum of money, and contributions are coming in fast; but there is no limit to what is wanted. This money is being spent in providing the regiment with athletic equipment, both outdoor and indoor; with games for the barracks; with cigarettes and smoking tobacco; with contributions to the funds of the several companies that the men raise among themselves. It is contemplated, moreover, that there will be need to extend aid and comfort to some of the families whom the men have left behind. Contributions of books, sweaters and other knitted articles are also being received.

By 1959 the milling plant of Bicr oft Uranium Mines Ltd. had been in operation for two years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, had been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work had been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of interrelated variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feels that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The Addendum outlines noteworthy developments to the fall of 1960. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic. nonsegregated, syenite and granite pegmatite. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, sodic plagioclase, and pyroxene or biotite are the main constituents with uraninite, uranothorite, fluorite, titanite, cryolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching, and clarification capable of 1500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on Oct. 29, 1956, and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93.0 pct on several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for eight months in 1958 has been 97.1 pct although all grinding mills were relined during this period. A generalized flowsheet is shown in Fig. 1 and the plant layout in Fig. 2. The ore is crushed in three stages to -3/8-in. and then is wet ground in two stages to approximately 50 pct -200 mesh. The pulp is thickened to 68 pct solids and agitated by air for 33 hr at a pH of 1.9 as maintained by the addition of 93 pct sulfuric acid. Separation of the uranium-bearing pregnant liquor from the residue is accomplished by five-stage countercurrent decantation (CCD), following which the liquor is clarified for removal of fine slimes. The clarified liquor is treated in the ion exchange equipment in which both the upgrading of the solution and the removal of some impurities is accomplished. Addition of magnesia to the high-grade eluate from ion exchange precipitates the uranium as sodium-magnesium diuranate. After being filtered and dried this precipitate is packaged in drums for shipment. The residue from CCD and the barren solution from ion exchange are neutralized by the addition of lime and pumped to the tailings disposal area. CRUSHING All crushing is done on surface in a conventional three-stage unit consisting of a 36x48-in. Birdsboro Buchanan jaw crusher, a 4 1/4-ft standard Symons cone crusher, and a 4-ft Symons shorthead. Both the two primary and the two secondary screens are 4X 8-ft Symons rod decks. Moisture content of the feed ranges from 3 to 4 pct. In the initial installation the primary screens were equipped with 5/16-in. rods at 1 1/4-in. spacing and the secondaries with 5/16-in. rods at 1/2-in. spacing. With this arrangement the average crushing rate was better than 180 tph. To reduce the work required of the grinding circuit as tonnage was increased, several changes were made in the crushing circuit. By September 1957, both secondary screens had been reduced to 3/8-in. spacing, and rod size had been reduced to 3/16-in. to provide increased open area. Average throughput was reduced to 160 tph. Later, 50 pct of one primary screen was decreased to 1/2-in. opening to better balance the load between the two cone crushers. In May 1958,

MORE has been said about the iron and steel situation on the Pacific Coast than has been done .about it; but perhaps as much has been done as conditions have warranted. The production of finished steel in an amount sufficient to take care of the local demand for certain sizes and shapes is an established industry on the .coast. The amount .and the variety of products, so made, changes with the demand or them which is largely dependent upon the growth in population. An increasing demand will not always increase the quantity of steel produced locally because the cost of production may rise so -high as to let in steel from the outside. The reason for this is that all of the steel made in the West comes from steel scrap, the supply of which is .limited. From the standpoint of the metallurgist, it would. be desirable to subititute pig iron for some of ' the steel scrap, but this cannot be done profitably because the pig iron now available is too expensive. In other words, the large future demand for steel and pig iron on the Pacific Coast must be supplied by reduction of ores in the West, unless we are to be content with paying high transportation costs for material produced elsewhere. ."

The properties of a new magnesium alloy ZT1 containing 3.0 pct Th, 2.5 pct Zn, 0.7 pct Zr are described. The alloy possesses good creep and fatigue resistance up to 650°F, is free from microporosity, and is readily sand-cast. ZT1 is shown to be superior to zinc-free Mg-Th-Zr alloys. THE advent of the jet engine created a demand for a light sand-casting alloy capable of being cast into large complex shapes and capable of resisting creep at temperatures up to 500°F. This demand has been largely met by alloys of the magnesium-cerium mischmetal-zirconium types, containing about 3 pct Ce mischmetal and 0.7 pct Zr, typified by Elektron magnesium alloys MCZ and ZREI, the latter alloy also having a zinc addition of 2.5 pct. These alloys utilize the valuable properties at elevated temperatures conferred by the addition of rare earth metals to magnesium, a fact which has been known for many years and discussed by several investigators.1-1 Murphy and Payne8 showed that the addition of the powerful grain-refining element zirconium to Mg-Ce mischmetal alloys produced alloys with attractive room temperature properties combined with good creep properties and castability. With the increasing power of modern jet engines the temperatures to which some of the magnesium parts are subject are likely to exceed the safe working range of the cerium-mischmetal-containing alloys, and at the beginning of the research considerable interest had been shown by aeroplane engine designers in a magnesium sand-casting alloy suitable for service at higher temperatures, e.g., 600°F and above. At an early stage in the development of this type of alloy a check on the fatigue properties at elevated temperatures indicated that, since the fatigue limit even at 108 eversals was appreciably higher than any permissible creep stress, the main emphasis of the research could be concentrated on creep behavior. The primary aim in developing the new alloy has therefore been to attain maximum creep resistance; but due consideration has also been given to other important properties such as castability, tensile strength, and cost. The mechanisms of corrosion and corrosion fatigue damages to sucker rods are examined from a fundamental electrochemical viewpoint, and the relationships of sucker rod microstructures to these damaging effects are defined. The common corrosive agents in crude oil production and storage are discussed as to types of attacks that they cause. The variations of fatigue strength with alloy content, surface preparation, and stress ranges are analyzed. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to how microstructures largely influence and control sucker rod performance. INTRODUCTION Greater than 90 per cent of the crude oil produced by artificial lift methods is produced through sucker rod pumping systems. In the USA each year more than $14 million is spent for sucker rods in new and old pumping installations. It is important to make this investment a wise one. Essentially, the sucker rod system is a long series of steel rods, operating under alternating stress loadings and under mechanical vibrations, which connect the surface power source with the subsurface pump. These rods often operate in a variety of corrosive media, including water, brines, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sul-fide, and air. Basically, this paper is concerned with the problem of the behavior of certain steels in various corrosive media under high and dynamic stress patterns. The main objective of this paper is to show how, once the stress effects and the corrosive environments are defined, one can still realize structural control and beneficial influence upon corrosion and corrosion fatigue. FUNDAMENTAL DEFINITIONS AND ANALYSIS In the corrosion and stress behavior of this solid state mixture of iron and iron carbide called steel, one must analyze upon what major factors does its service life depend and of what, exactly, is steel composed. The former question can be referred to two external factors and two internal factors. The two major external factors are: 1. the nature of the stress patterns — size and range of stresses present 2. the nature of the corrosion — erosion environment — the corrodent and/or wear involved The two fundamental internal factors that govern the strength and useful life of a steel both in normal duty and in heavy-duty corrosion service are: 1. the nature of the steel volume properties 2. the nature of the steel surface properties For the latter question normal steel is defined as a solid mixture of iron and iron carbide particles, generally with certain accidental and intentional elements present. (The amount of iron carbide present is determined by the carbon content of the steel.) These additional elements generally dissolve into either the iron (ferrite) or the iron carbide (cementite) components.

THIS is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. CAUSES OF LOSS IN ORE-CONCENTRATION. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of-loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition; we can then study to see in what way the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take, these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.-Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur: first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size ; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to, the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrushing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the only one requiring special treatment at our hands. THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. Gloomy predictions that domestic mineral reserves are approaching exhaustion are unwarranted and may be harmful, this author contends. Specific mineral forecasting errors in the Paley Report are cited to support this contention, and steps that can be taken to insure a progressive mineral industry capable of keeping pace with the major raw material needs of the nation through advancing technology are suggested. Mining is both exciting and rewarding —although at times somewhat frustrating— and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining's stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I be-li4ve that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public's recognition of our industry's peculiar problems. The progress of our civilization over the centuries has been fundamentally based upon proper use of raw materials, both agricultural and mineral, and upon energy, human or otherwise. As the standard of living has progressed century by century, the demands for mineral raw materials have increased in an irregular, but steadily rising progression. Fortunately, those minerals on which we depend most, i.e., iron, coal, petroleum, copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc have been neither too difficult to find nor to process into useful form. Iron, the most useful of all metals, is present in various amounts in most rock types and soils. Gold, seemingly the most generally desired (but certainly not the most useful of all metals), occurs in sea water in a far greater total tonnage than has been won from all of the world's known gold mines. If the latter is true, then why do we not see large installations treating sea water for the recovery of its gold content? The answer, of course, is that even the French, who seem, from their recent actions, to value gold above all else, have not devised a way of doing this at a profit. Theoretically, it is possible, but not with today's technology at a cost which would justify the effort. Man has exploited only those mineral concentrations which accidents of nature have placed within his so far limited means of finding and utilizing. What we geologists and engineers refer to as an orebody is nothing more than a concentration of minerals, exploitable with available knowledge, that will yield a value greater than the value attached to the energy and capital required to produce it. What is "ore" and what is not "ore" is, in the end, a matter of economics. The economic problem stems from the physical and chemical character of mineral deposits. The good Lord stacked the cards heavily in favor of rising costs by limiting the amount of the higher grade ores easily available. As the best and most accessible ores are depleted, it becomes necessary to work harder and with greater ingenuity to produce more from less accessible and lower grade resources. The quantity of mineral raw materials we can have in the future will be determined largely by what we can afford to pay for them in terms of human effort, capital outlay and production energies. We will always have the problem of cost with us and our only real means of keeping ahead of rising costs is by continually improving our technical abilities. We, in this country at least, no longer have open to us large and unexplored virgin wildernesses in which a pick-and-shovel prospector might uncover an untouched mineral bonanza. The rest of the world also has few conventional frontiers left in which the explorer-prospector is free to roam. We do, however, have enormous land areas unexplored, and untouched po-

The key to realistic casing stress analysis in thermal recovery installations is accurate knowledge of the temperatures involved. Much information leading to prediction of heat losses from tubing string to wellbore has been published. This .same information permits calculation of casing temperature under certain conditions. This paper reviews the basis for most of the published work, the line source solution to the diflusivity equation and examines some of its application criteria in the light of unsteady-state conditions. An alternate finite differences method is presented for correlation, and experimental data pertaining to the heat transfer mechanism in the annulus is reported. In the light of the information presented in the paper, it appears that the assumption of a line source for the tubing-wellbore system is valid even for reasonably short periods of heat flow, .such as "steam soak" operations. The empirically modified equation presented earlier matches computer derived results of the finite differences approach lor periods as short as 50 hours. Previously predicted cas ing temperatures and the associated stress levels are thus verified based on these correlative computations and the reported experimental information. Fall out from the computer output resulting in some studies of the influence of insulating cement properties on casing temperature, and experimentally studied effects of nitrogen placed in the annulus at various pressures., are described. INTRODUCTION Generally speaking, predictions of average casing temperatures have been based on an idealized model involving a centralized tubing string at uniform constant temperature radiating energy towards the casing under steady-state conditions.'. ' Heat is transferred away from the casing to the formation by unsteady-state conduction across thermal barriers consisting of cement and the mud sheath. Heat balances written on the casing permit prediction of instantaneous casing temperatures. During early periods of injection, casing temperature varies appreciably as a function of time; however, for long injection times this variation decays as heat flow from the wellbore to the formation stabilizes, and it becomes virtually negligible as conditions surrounding the wellbore become quasi-steady-state (Fig. 1). Carslaw and Jaeger -escribe a solution to the diffusivity equation for a line source (Fig. 2). A constant supply of heat is introduced into the medium from the line placed into the origin of the x-y coordinate system and parallel to the z-axis. AS BOTH South Africa and diamond mining are unfamiliar subjects it seems best that on such an occasion as this I should endeavor to reflect the atmosphere of the place and to picture the mines from an industrial rather than from a technical standpoint and, because of long absence, my remarks must necessarily be sketchy and in some particulars not up to date. The preferable route to South Africa is via England, direct steamers from America being inferior as to service and effecting no saving of time. The newer boats are of about 20,000 tons capacity and very comfortable. Seventeen days are required for the voyage and only one stop is made-that at the island of Madiera, three days out. With the continued deep drilling of today, increasing numbers of high pressure and high temperature gas-condensate reservoirs are being discovered. Correspondingly, the ranges of properties of gas-condensate reservoir fluids are also being increased. The literature1*'." contains several excellent reviews of the property ranges in presently known condensate reservoirs. When one examines these property ranges, it becomes apparent that the need for reliable data is great if the engineer is to evaluate properly or appraise a gas-condensate reservoir. It is the purpose of this paper to present phase-behavior data that will point out some of the important variables that influence recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs produced by pressure depletion. All these variables may be resolved into two major categories: the hydroc:arbon composition of the reservoir fluid and the physical properties of the reservoir. But the variables which we will consider are those which are usually determined from well tests shortly after discovery and are, consequently, readily available to the engineer. They are as follows: (1) the producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio, (2) stock-tank liquid gravity, and (3) reservoir temperature. Laboratory depletion studies have been performed on several reservoir fluids to illustrate the effect of changes in the cronsidered variables upon ultimate recoveries. The deviation factors, Z, of a series of reservoir fluids were determined experimentally to illustrate their order of magnitude and their effect upon the calculation of in-place reserves existing at high pressurcs and temperatures. The procedures followed in conjunction with the performance of these studies and their associated calculations are illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of this paper, the depletion recoveries are expressed only in terms of pcr cent of initial stock-tank liquid, with the abandonment pressure assumed to be 500 psig. VARIATION OF RECOVERY WITH INITIAL PRODUCING SEPARATOR GAS-STOCK-TANK LIQUID RATIO The producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio has long been one of the principal criteria in assumptions and generalized correlations' used for the estimation of ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs. Fig. 2 presents a plot of the cumulative recovery of stock-tank liquid at abandonment as a function of the initial producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio. The graphical illustration represents the results of 44 laboratory depletion studies performed on actual gas-condensate fluids. These data are presented not only to illustrate the general trend of ultimate recovery increase with initial producing ratio increase but to emphasize the considerable variation in possible recovery at any given producing ratio. Table 1 presents the properties of two actual reservoir fluids chosen to illustrate the approximate extremities of producing ratios for gas-condensate systems. The fluids designated as A and B exhibited initial producing ratios of 3,400 and 114,000 scf/bbl, respectively. Fig. 3 presents a graphical comparison of the cumulative stock-tank liquid recoveries, calculated from the well-stream compositions and produced volumes for each fluid during depletion. It is to be noted that Fluid A exhibited a recovery of only 16.5 per cent when produced to an assumed abandonment pressure of 500 psig while the corresponding recovery for Fluid B was calculated to be 62.2 per cent. This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

THE Tennessee Copper Co.'s mines are in the southeast corner of the state of Tennessee, Polk Co., in the well-known Ducktown copper basin. Their new circular production shaft will eventually be the only ore hoisting shaft, and is located for handling ore from Boyd, Calloway, Mary, and Cherokee mines. A circular, rather than a rectangular, shaft was decided upon because: 1-The circular shaft section is stronger when lined with concrete. Reinforcing steel was not required, thus reducing lining cost by one- quarter. 2-Water sealing was desired; it was thought it could best be done with a concrete lining followed by pressure grouting to eliminate water seeps. 3-The shaft labor saving equipment could best be used in a large opening, so the round section was made for economy, sinking, mucking, concreting and water sealing. Less shaft steel is used than could have been possible with steel sets. There are no posts required; center beams and Tee plate assembly placed at 10 ft hold the 100 lb steel guide rails.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron has been measured as a function of pressure and temperature. Sieverts' Law is obeyed at all pressures up to 1 atm and the temperature coefficient of solubility is 8 x 106 %/°C. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by the Sieverts' method and by the sampling method. The solubility is decreased by Al, C, Co Cu, Ni, 0. Si atzd Sn, and it is increased by Cr, Cb, Mn, Mo, Ta, W, and V. Interaction coefficients eN, for the effect of these elements on nitrogen dissolved in liquid iron, are reported. 1 HE effect of nitrogen upon the properties of steel may be desirable or not, depending upon the composition, processing treatment, and the use of the product. To understand the behavior of nitrogen in the various steelmaking processes, it is necessary to have reliable fundamental data pertaining to the solubilities, rates of solution, and chemical reactions of nitrogen in steel, particularly in the liquid state. In an effort to extend our knowledge in these areas, an investigation of the thermodynamics and kinetics of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys was undertaken. The thermodynamic aspects of the study are presented in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron has received the attention of several investigators whose results are summarized in Table I. Reasonable agreement among the more recent researches1-l8 is found for the solubility of approximately 0.044 wt pct at 1600°C and 1-atm pressure of N,, for the temperature coefficient of solubility being small but positive, and for adherence to Sieverts' law for pressures up to 1 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in a number of binary liquid iron alloys has been studied: Fe-A1,3 Fe-As,16 Fe-C,3, 71 18, 19, 20 Fe-Cr ,5,7, 10, 11, 15 21 Fe-Co,'4, '6 Fe-Cu,'6 Fe-Mn,10, 11, 18 Fe-Mo,13, 16 Fe-Ni,10, 11, 13, 15, 16 Fe-O,16, 17, l9 Fe-p,7 Fe-S,l6 Fe-Sb,16 Fe-Se,lg Fe-Si,4) 97 '77 187 19>2° Fe-Sn,16 and Fe-v.51 '3 A few ternary systems have been studied, most of which were reviewed by ~angenberg" who applied the methods suggested by WagnerPz3 Chipman,24 Darken and G~rry, and Morris and Buehl26 for predicting solubilities in multicomponent alloys. SINCE May 1948, when tungsten carbide bits were introduced at the Flin Flon mine, they have been popular with the miners because of their fast drilling speed and low gage loss. The high cost of commercial carbide bits and tipped drill steel, however, prevented their use except for the hardest rock. In an effort to extend the use of tungsten carbide on a basis economically competitive with detachable steel bits, experimental work was begun in 1950 to test the feasibility of making tungsten carbide tipped drill steel in the mine drill steel shop. This work showed that tipped drill steel could be made locally at less than half the cost of the commercial product. The performance of the local tipped drill steel was comparable to that obtained with commercial carbide bits and tipped drill steel and the cost per foot drilled was much lower. Local tipped drill steel was adopted for all mine drilling in November 1951. Since then drilling costs per foot have been sharply reduced and footage drilled per manshift has increased markedly. Experience at Flin Flon has shown that production of satisfactory carbide tipped drill steel is not difficult and that highly skilled labor and costly equipment are not required. As long as wise selection of brazing materials is made and certain simple precautions are rigidly maintained, there is no reason why small mines with relatively unskilled labor cannot produce a satisfactory product. The following description outlines the technique used at Flin Flon for making carbide tipped drill steel and discusses characteristics of the brazing process that make special precautions necessary. Drill steel is forged to four-wing shape in a conventional steel sharpening forge. Standard steel dies are modified to minimize forging cracks around the central waterhole and to forge a blunt bithead on the steel. The steel is preheated to 1500°F and held at this temperature for at least 2 min. When the temperature has equalized throughout the steel section, the drill steel is transferred to the forging furnace and heated rapidly with a reducing flame up to 2000°F. This two-stage method of heating minimizes the grain growth and decarburization of the steel while ensuring that the steel temperature does not vary greatly throughout the forging zone. After forging the steel is allowed to cool in air to about 1600°F before being annealed in a bath of vermiculite. Despite the high hardenability of the 3 pct Ni-Cr-Mo drill steel used, this simple treatment anneals the drill steel sufficiently for milling. The forged and annealed drill steel is slotted on a plain horizontal milling machine that is equipped with a quick opening chuck and a slot depth stop. The full depth of the slot is milled in a single pass of the 3-in. milling cutter which is fed at 33/4 in. per min across the crown of each bit wing. The slots are cut to a width of 0.342 to 0.344 in. Maintenance of this slot width is necessary to ensure that the optimum brazing clearance of 0.002 in. will result after assembling of shims and carbide in the slot. Prior to March 1953, when the milling machine was installed, drill steel was slotted on a small manually fed ¾ hp milling attachment mounted on the bed of a lathe. Over 16,000 drill steels were slotted on this unit, and in view of its small size and low cost it gave excellent service. Brazing of Tipped Steel Drill steel that has been milled and cleaned in carbon tetrachloride is mounted in a rotating cradle holding six drill steels, the length of which may be from 2 to 12 ft. The slots in the drill steel, the shims, and the tungsten carbide inserts are thoroughly fluxed with a fluoride flux and assembled as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows the brazing equipment in use. As the ring burner is lowered over the bithead a spring valve opens the gas lines, and the gas mixture, preset to give a slightly reducing flame, is fed to the ring burner where it is lit from a pilot flame. The ring burner heats the drill steel over a zone about 1 to 2 in. below the bithead, which becomes heated by conduction through the steel. By this means the bithead is heated rapidly and evenly, and contamination of the brazing joint with soot from the flame is avoided. The bithead is heated to the melting temperature of the brazing alloy within 1 min. This rapid heating minimizes the disadvantage of a non-eutectic brazing alloy. The brazing alloy, a nickel-bearing quaternary alloy, is placed at the bottom of the slot below the carbide insert, as shown in Fig. 1. As the brazing alloy melts it is drawn by displacement by the carbide and by capillary action into all parts of the joint to displace liquid flux from metal surfaces. As soon as the brazing alloy melts, each insert in turn is wiped by being moved back and forth along the slot. This action assists wetting of the carbide by the brazing alloy and assists in displacing molten flux from the joint. After continuous heating for about 75 sec, when the bithead has reached a temperature of about 1500°F, the ring burner is raised and the gas supply is shut off automatically by the spring valve. As soon as heating is stopped a hand press is placed on the bithead and the inserts are squeezed down firmly. This action minimizes the clearance between the bottom of the insert and the slot. Correctly brazed steel should maintain a clearance at the bottom of the slot of 0.001 to 0.002 in. After six steels have been brazed they are removed from the cradle and allowed to cool in air. As soon as each drill steel is cool it is dressed on a grinding wheel to remove excess flux and braze and is ground to the gage appropriate to the length of the drill steel.
