The kinetics of acidified thiourea leaching of pyrite concentrate was investigated at temperature ranging form 20 °C to a 60 °C. The effect of various parameters on the dissolution rates are discussed. The gold extraction was found to be zero and first orders with respect to Fe (111) and thiourea concentration, respectively. The order of the reaction with respect to sulfuric acid was found to be zero. The activation energy was determined from the Arrhenius plot as 2,039 kcal mole -1 (for a freshly prepared acidic solution containing Fe (111) as the oxidant and at 800 rpm stirring speed. This relatively low activation energy value suggests that the gold extraction is controlled by a-physical phenomenon. Under optimum conditions, more than 90% of gold has been dissolved in about 30 min. and 95% in 60 min. Attempt to recover gold from thiourea solution using active carbon is also discussed.

N EARLY 1300 members and guests crowded the halls of the Engineering Societies Building during the winter meeting of the Institute just closed, and more than 600 attended the banquet. In variety of program, quality of papers, interest in discussion, and brilliance of social features, the meeting maintained the high reputation of the past. Nothing elaborate in the way of excursions was attempted, experience having proved that February weather in New York is much too uncertain to warrant extensive field trips. A sight-seeing journey up the Hudson to the Bear Mountain bridge was, however, made despite the snows of the week before and the week after. The annual business meeting, while attended by a minority of the members in the building, was marked by the display of keen interest in the work and called out several interesting discussions. The excellent reports of the committees that had organized their work and directed it along definite lines, emphasized the need of funds with which to support assistants or Fellows who shall correlate and put to the highest use the facilities of the Institute in research along technical lines. This thought was developed at the banquet by the retiring president, J. V. W. Reynders, and it is expected that the Directors will take early steps to collect a fund for this purpose. The number of the individual sessions was too great and the papers and discussions too numerous to permit mention here of all the features of inter- est. A general review only follows. The papers and detailed discussions will be printed and sent to members as promptly as possible.

I. INTRODUCTORY. INDUSTRIALLY, the most important service that geological science can now render to mining in the Upper Mississippi leadand zinc-fields is to devise some practical scheme whereby the productive ore-belts may be located with greater certainty than they have been in the past. Up to the present time there has been little service of this kind, and in spite of all that has been worked out concerning the geologic features of the region, and notwithstanding all that has been written about these ore-deposits, this particular phase of the subject has been, for some reason or other, the very one that has received the least consideration. The neglect by geologists in this respect has been all but complete. The following notes are suggestive of some practical solutions to the problems presented. As here suggested, the geologic relationships of the ore-bodies were surmised some years ago, though somewhat vaguely perhaps. No opportunity for securing critical data appeared until recent investigations of a private character were undertaken, which bad in view the extensive prospecting of undeveloped areas. Fresh from rather wide experiences of a decade in the principal mining-regions of four continents, and after a lenstrum's residence among the chief mining-camps of the West and of Mexico, under conditions which measured geologic hypotheses in meters and rigidly tested their values in, terms of dollars, the recent return to the Joplin field and a new survey of its ore-conditions were fraught with somewhat unexpected results. Aspects of the ore-deposition were presented of which previously there was no hint. Ten years' absence from the district had tended greatly to clarify former hazy impressions. It enabled many features, then only dimly outlined, to be considered more nearly in their true perspective and in their real relationships to their surroundings. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Lebanon, and belonged to the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Lebanon Lodge 121, I. 0. 0. F. and Camp 65, P. 0. S. of A. Lieutenant Bernhardt Edward Heine Bernhardt Edward Heine, a lieutenant in the Aviation Service of the U. S. Army, died as the result of a fa1I1 in an aeroplane at Fort Sill, Okla., on Aug. 10, 1918. The accident occurred on Aug. 2, when the machine in which he was flying with Lieutenant Carsons fell from a height of 1500 ft.; Lieutenant Carsons was instantly killed, but Lieutenant Heine died from his injuries a week later. Lieutenant Heine was born at Mount Clemens, Mich., in 1895. After attending the local High School he entered the Michigan College of Mines, and became a Junior Member of the Institute while still a student. He graduated in 1916, with the degree of B. S. In 1914 he served as a transitman for the engineering department of the City of Hancock, Mich. Lieutenant Heine had been in the army since 1916, having been with the 'troops at 'the Mexican border. He had been in the Aviation Section since August, 1917.

The porosities of fractured limestone reservoirs can be divided into two broad types in accordance with their effects on fluid distribution and fluid flow. In the coarse porosity, gravity segregation lakes place freely and the resistance to fluid flow is very small. In the fine porosity there is no segregation and a high resistance to flow, and it has relative permeability characteristics similar to tight sandstones. By analyzing the affect of the two porosities it is concluded that in some cases to recover the maximum amount of oil it is necessary to remove large quantities of gas from the reservoir by producing at high gas-oil ratios. In this manner the fine porosity is drained of its oil and the gas-oil contact drops slowly permitting higher production rates from the oil leg. Since this conclusion is contrary to widely accepted principles of conservation, a mathematical model (Fig. I) was constructed to duplicate the conditions desired. The behavior of the model indicates that under certain conditions it is possible to recover more oil by producing at high gas-oil ratios than by production at low gas-oil ratios, and that the rate of production is affected more by gas shut-offs than by the decrease in pressure (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5). INTRODUCTION It has been noted that certain limestone reservoirs behave in such a way as to indicate that there are two distinct types of porous spaces available for fluid storage and fluid flow. Regardless of the nature of these porous spaces the distinguishing characteristic is that in one type of porous space there is definite gravity segregation between the oil and the gas; while in the other, the gas evolved tends to remain distributed equally throughout the reservoir. For the sake of simplicity the porosity in which gravity segregation takes place at a fast enough rate to affect the behavior will be called "coarse po- rosity", while that in which this is not so will be termed "fine porosity". The behavior of a reservoir of this type would be different than that of a sandstone reservoir, especially if most of the oil is in the fine porosity. FRANCIS B. SILSBE,* Washington, D. C. (written discussion?). ?This paper is an interesting example of the -solution by the methods of metallography of what seemed at first a purely chemical problem. The authors have shown: in detail, how the well-known corrosion of spark-plug terminals is due to the dropping out of the individual crystals of the metal as it becomes surrounded by an oxide film. This corrosion is usually quite slow but in special cases may become a serious factor in limiting the life of spark plugs. There still remains the problem for the metallurgist to produce a material that will be entirely free from, this trouble. One of the most startling results of the work is. the demonstration that it affords of the deleterious effect of a mechanical stress continuously applied to material that is at the same time subject to adverse chemical or thermal conditions. The particular style of spark plug shown in the illustration, and in which serious trouble was caused by this corrosion, has the side terminals fastened at both ends and the method of assem-bling is such that a considerable initial tension is applied to the wire. It is without doubt this superimposed tension that causes the inter-crystal-line network to line up, as it were, into a few continuous and deeply penetrating transverse fissures instead of forming a great number of shallow surface cracks. The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. THE transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. ENERGY. REQUIREMENTS Carrying out the idea contained in Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company's zine-smelting process were described.' At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the company's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. An average dry-weight analysis of this material is: Zn, 58.28 per cent; Pb, 0.56; insoluble, 1.6; SiO², 1.12; Fe, 6.4; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.27; S, 31.9; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.06; Mn, 0.24. Moisture content is usually about 3 per cent. Three 21-ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff furnaces roast the coacentrate to a calcine of average conlposition (first 10 months of 1938): Zn, 67.69 per cent; Pb, 0.06; insoluble, 1.75; SiO², 1.26; Fe, 7.24; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.36; S, 1.88; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.07'; Mn, 0.27. The sulphur dioxide gas, after passing through a waste-heat boiler, proceeds through a recently redesigned low-resistance gas-purification assembly to the contact sulphuric acid plant, of which the capacity is 200 tons of concentrates per day. The calcine is mixed with a portion of returned furnace residues and sintered on 42-in, by 44-ft. Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, gas-fired. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO² to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

THE Tennessee Copper Co.'s mines are in the southeast corner of the state of Tennessee. Polk Co., in the well-known Ducktown copper basin. Their new circular production shaft will eventually be the only ore hoisting shaft, and is located for handling ore from Boyd, Calloway, Mary, and Cherokee mines. A circular, rather than a rectangular, shaft was decided upon because: 1-The circular shaft section is stronger when lined with concrete. Reinforcing steel was not required, thus reducing lining cost by one- quarter. 2-Water sealing was desired; it was thought it could best be done with a concrete lining followed by pressure grouting to eliminate water seeps. 3-The shaft labor saving equipment could best be used in a large opening, so the round section was made for economy, sinking, mucking, concreting and water sealing. Less shaft steel is used than could have been possible with steel sets. There are no posts required; center beams and Tee plate assembly placed at 10 ft hold the 100 lb steel guide rails. The shaft is 12 ft 7 1/2 in. ID of the concrete walls. This is large enough for two 10-ton hoisting skips and a ladder compartment. One of the skip compartments is for hauling equipment. The grouting equipment was a 2%xlO-in. Gardner-Denver grout pump, air powered and developing 1000 lb pressure. A grout mixer, also air driven, fed the mixed solution into a tank coupled to the pump suction. Grout materials used were mostly water and Portland cement. Some Bentonite was used to seal porous ground near the surface.

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

UehlinG, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Baker's paper is one that brings up a subject of great importance, and if full statistics could be collectecl of the number of furnace-linings ruined by reason of bad distribution by skip-hoists, it would be found an astonishing array. Unfortunately a universal remedy has not yet been found. The fact that Mr. Baker has apparently succeeded in overcoming the trouble at Sydney, is no guarantee that the same remedy applied at another plant, where very different or even slightly different conditions prevail, mould cure the trouble. That it requires but a slight continuous difference of penetrability in the column of the descending stock of one section, over another, to produce channeling, is clearly demonstrated by Mr. Baker's experiments, by which he reversed the channeling from front to rear instead of remedying the trouble. Every change in the physical make-up of the charge necessarily requires a specific adjustment; even supposing this feasible, the regular working of the furnace is by no means assured, because with the high pressures now customary, the tendency of the ascending gases to plow their way through in a direct course, prevails, and having once opened up a passage, they will persist and cause trouble. The Si-0 equilibrium in liquid iron was investigated in some detail by Gokcen and Chipman1 who reported equilibrium constants of the following reactions: In each case the thermodynamic equilibrium constant K was obtained by extrapolating K' to infinite dilution. Their results on reaction [I] were consistent with those of earlier observers, and there seems to be little doubt as to the approximate validity of the equilibrium product determined. On the other hand, the results on reactions [2] and [3] indicated unusual curvilinear relationships between the activity coefficients of silicon and of oxygen and the silicon concentration. Since a linear relation is observed in all other similar instances, it was concluded that some source of error had affected the gas-metal equilibrium relationships. Recently the authors undertook a restudy of these equilibria with the view especially to establishing the equilibrium constant of reaction [2]. Their experiments, however, were discontinued before a tbroughly satisfactory answer had been obtained and consequently have remained unpublished until the present time. Quite recently Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana2 published the results of a very thorough study of these equilibria. It is the purpose of the present note to Compare these three sets of experimental data, a comparison which leads to Confirmation of the results of Matoba and coworkers. The experimental arrangements described by Dutilloy and Chipman were employed. A controlled mixture of Hz, H,0, and argon was led into the induction furnace over the surface of the Fe-Si melt contained in a silica crucible. On account of the slow approach to equilibrium, runs were continued for at least 8 hr and, in some cases, as much as 12 hr. Samples were taken by means of silica tubes at the start and during the final 4-hr period of each run. Out of twelve runs only seven appeared to have approached equilibrium with sufficient certainty to be reported here. The results of these experiments, all at 1600°c, are shown by the triangles in Fig. 1. Equilibrium was approached from both oxidizing and reducing conditions and the direction of approach is indicated by the shape of the triangle. Attempts to extend the study to higher silicon concentrations were unsuccessful on account of the transfer of silica from the metal bath to the upper portions of the crucible by means of a silicon-monoxide mechanism. Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana used similar methods and approached equilibrium from both sides. Their results at three temperatures are shown by the solid lines of Fig. 1. A line corresponding to 1600 deg is interpolated from their equations and is shown by the dotted line. The results of Gokcen and Chipman at 1600 deg in the range 0.02 to 2.0 pct Si are also shown. At concentrations up to about 0.6 pct Si, these investigators approached equilibrium from both directions, and their results in this range appear to be trustworthy. Above 1 pct Si, however, all of their experiments involved oxidation only, as shown by a decrease in the silicon content of the bath. It now seems certain that they failed to reach equilibrium at these higher silicon concentrations and that the curvilinear relation shown by their results is incorrect. It is evident that their results in the lower silicon range are in good agreement with those of Matoba and coworkers. In fact, a straight line drawn through their results would parallel the dotted line and would differ from it by only 0.05 in log K. The new data also lie close to that line. It may thus be concluded that the three sets of data are in good agreement and that the equations proposed by Matoba and coworkers for reaction [2] are satisfactory . Most of the information available on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes, both water and steam, has been obtained from calculated temperature distributions in the pay zone and adjacent formations. The usual approach has been to write the heat balance equations in terms of the temperatures, and then to introduce whatever simplifications are necessary to help obtain an analytical or a numerical solution. In either case, the assumption has often been made that the vertical thermal conductivity in the flooded interval is infinite, so that the temperatures within the flooded interval are then independent of vertical position. Because it was first made by Lauwerier,l and has been used extensively since, this assumption will be referred to as the Lauwerier assumption. Excellent reviews of the literature on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes have been given by Spillette,2 Flock et al.,3 and Ramney.4 Of course, the most significant contributions take into account the effect of a finite vertical thermal conductivity on the vertical temperature profile. The most general analytic expression for the heat efficiency of a hot fluid injection process is that of Antimirov5 who considers injection of a heated incompressible fluid into a reservoir through an arbitrary number of wells. The rate of heat injection into the reservoir, as well as the injection temperature, is an arbitrary function of time. The geometry of the horizontal flow is arbitrary, although the reservoir is considered to be of uniform thickness and properties and to be of infinite areal extent. Heat transfer within the reservoir is by horizontal convection and conduc- tion, and by vertical conduction. In the formations adjacent to the flooded interval, heat transfer is by conduction in any direction. Thus, the available expression for the heat efficiency due to hot water injection has been developed for rather general conditions. This degree of applicability has not been obtained for other thermal recovery processes. By making the Lauwerier assumption we have been able to obtain expressions for the heat efficiency that are essentially independent of the thermal recovery process, be it steam, hot-water, or underground combustion. Clearly, then, the approach followed here is more restrictive than that of Antimirov5 in that it uses the Lauwerier assumption. At the same time less restrictive assumptions are made about the horizontal heat transfer mechanisms, either in the flooded interval or in the formations adjacent to it. The main difference between our approach and that of other investigators is that the heat balance in the pay zone is expressed for the pay zone as a whole rather than for a volume element within it. The Lauwerier assumption is introduced after the problem is developed along these lines as far as possible. The details of the development of the heat efficiency are given in the Appendix, while the main features of the model are discussed in the next section. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt. several days before leaving Buffalo; influenza developed, and when his train reached Nashville, Tenn., he was too ill to continue his journey and was taken to the Kissam Hall Hospital, Vanderbilt University, where he died of pneumonia. He was a young man of unusual ability and high moral character, always brigh.t, happy and kind, faithful and honorable in all things; loved by both his associates and those under his authority. His life and character cannot be better described than by the following quotation from one of his superior officers: "Lieutenant Ohnsorg was a man loved by all of us, always cheerful, just and kind, with unusual executive ability. We can never expect to find a man who has his ability and fine temperament and his position can never be sled as he filled it." He was happily married and leaves to mourn his loss a wife, Constance E. (Rogers) Ohnsorg and a baby girl born since his death, Nov. 29, 1918, a father, W. H. Ohnsorg, mother, Ida May Ohnsorg, and a sister, Mrs. Stuart Strathy McNair. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Florida Phosphate Miners' Association. Lieutenant Edward Hale Perry At the height of the first great German'offensive -of'the Spring of 1918, Edward Hale Perry, of Boston, First Lieutenant, Company D, Sixth Regiment Engineers, U. S. Army, was killed on March 30, near War fusee—Aban-court, Picardy, France, while defending the Boisdes Tailloux against the terrific plunge aimed at Amiens. Lieutenant Perry was born in Boston, Jan. 23, 1887, the son of Georgianna W. and the late Charles F. Perry. After completion of his college preparatory course, he travelled for a year in South America and Europe before entering Harvard with the class of 1910. It might have been regarded as the natural thing for Perry, upon graduation, to choose a path that would lead to a business or professional career at home, but there were in his character a solidity, a horror of sham, a contempt for the "soft" things, and a love-of the open which caused him to be attracted to a life of stern and sturdy reality. Accordingly, he entered the graduate mining school at Harvard, and received the degree of Mining Engineer in 1913. In the meantime, two summers spent in Western mining camps had at-

This paper discusses the characteristics of the velocity logs now available to the petroleum industry, and some of their advantages and limitations. The velocity log was designed as an aid to the geophysicist to determine velocity layering in the earth and to provide fast, accurate and economical vertical travel time data. After a number of logs had been made, studies were carried out on their use ia correlating strata in adjacent wells. It was found that adjacent strata usually show sufficient velocity contrast to make it possible to correlate these from well to well, even in areas where electric or radioactive logs fail.' In addition, velocity logs have been useful in the determination of porosity and thickness of reservoir rock.' These uses for velocity logs require an understanding of the characteristics of the log in response to the changes in velocity and in borehole conditions encountered normally in logging. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF INSTRUMENTATION The measurement made in velocity logging is more accurately described as a measurement of time rather than velocity. Ideally the log is obtained by measuring the length of time required for compressional sound waves to travel through a fixed distance in the formation. In practice, the time measurement may be made accurately but the distance through which the waves have traveled may vary slightly. Changes in borehole diameter are responsible largely for the difficulty in maintaining a fixed distance, especially if the diameter variations are so abrupt and frequent that the borehole instrument cannot follow contours of the hole. Several service companies have velocity logging equipment available or under development which have different transmitters, receivers, and measuring systems. While these differences are important, there are actually only two systems in use at the present time (Fig. I)."' The first system initiates a pulse at a trans-mitter and detects it at a single receiver. The transmitter and receiver are separated by a fixed distance, called the spacing. The time measured is that between the initiation of the pulse and the first arrival of acoustical energy at the receiver. The second system uses two receivers and a transmitter. The receivers are separated by a fixed distance and the time between arrivals of energy at the two receivers is measured. Here, the spacing is the distance between receivers. During the early hours of Sunday morning last (the 6th inst.) there passed from our midst one of the most affable and estimable officers who, during our brief connection with the Depob, it has been our fortune to meet. Sidney A. Lang was born in Ontario in the year 1884 and lived in Toronto for a number of years. He ahtended Toronto University, where he displayed remarkable ability, and after graduating followed the profession of mining engineer. Being young and endowed with the spirit of adventure, he followed his profession in the mines of Chile and Peru; he could speak Spanish fluently. Always a reserved man, of refined tastes, it was difficult to induce him to relate some of his adventures in those countries so shrouded in mystery and romance. He joined the Canadian Engineers in Toronto as a sapper and shortly after came to this Depot.
