The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. The following report is a summary of the commercial results which 'Were obtained from 2,000 tests conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., in 1907 and 1908, under the technical supervision of R. H. Fernald, engineer in charge of the producer-gas section. The tests dealt primarily with gasoline, forming part of the investigation of mineral fuels provided for by acts of Congress. To determine the relative economy and efficiency of gasoline it was compared with denatured alcohol. The tests, many of which were undertaken in connection with work for the Navy Department, supplemented, to a certain extent, the work of previous investigations, but only so far as was necessary to emphasize some of the more important points and to lead up to the defining of conditions required for the economical use of gasoline and alcohol. In order to determine and eliminate the affecting engine conditions as far as possible, the investigation was commenced by making comparative gasoline and alcohol tests on the same engines. These tests were repeated on other engines of approxiElately the same size and speed, having different degrees of comFression, different methods of governing, and different carburetors. The final report will include much material that may be of use in engine design, but that side of the investigation was not pursued any further than was necessary to obtain the best possible results, for alcohol and for gasoline with the engines at hand, and to prove that the minimum fu·el-consumption rate for each could be obtained in approximately the same manner. The effects of engine and of operating conditions both have a bearing on the commercial deductions but will be discussed only in a general way at this time.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous selective flotation tests of barite-fluorspar ores from two deposits near Marion, Ky., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade fluorspar and barite concentrates. The lignin sulfonate-sodium fluoride method of floating the fluorspar successfully produced acid-grade fluorspar concentrates. Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate collector yielded concentrates suitable for use in compounding oil-well drilling mud. The fluorspar and barite recoveries were about 82 and 85 percent, respectively.

At the Annual Western Meeting held at Blairmore, Alta., October 1924, the writer presented a paper drawing attention -to the advantages of portable gas-driven equipment for developing isolated mining properties. This type of equipment was at that time practically in its infancy and the details of results actually accomplished were somewhat meagre. During the last year or so a number of these plants have been installed so that it is now possible to offer more definite information regarding the actual mining progress accomplished with such plants and their cost of operation in various parts of the country. This paper has been written with the idea of reviewing the work done during the past year, and to supply data which may be of interest to those wh9 are confronted with the problem of selecting equipment for development or assessment work. Because drilling operations play such an important part in mining, one of the first problems that usually confront the prospective? mine owner is the selection of the proper com-pressed-air plant. The size and type of equipment and the method of driving it require careful consideration. The size and type of equipment is determined largely by the funds available, transportation facilities, and the speed with which the programme of development is to be carried out. The selection of the proper method of drive usually depends on local conditions, such as the relative cost of various fuels, and has an important bearing on operating costs.

Groundwater restoration is an uranium leaching. Information on the technology, costs, and the current permitting regulations is of vital operators and to firms considering in important aspect of in situ effectiveness of the current state and federal government importance to in situ leach situ leaching. This study, funded by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, describes: (1) all recent restoration attempts at commercial in situ leach operations, (2) restoration costs reported by the industry, (3) empirical equations that predict the amount of groundwater flushing required to meet the current restoration criteria, and (4) in situ uranium permit requirements for the states of Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah, Montana, Colorado and South Dakota, and Federal requirements.

Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.

[Investigation of mine land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and evaluations by the mining industry, determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding revegetation of coal mined lands in western arid and semi-arid regions. The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid set irrigation. (San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles much more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

Application of the usual chemical methods to the determination of beryllium in the mineral-dressing products of a spodumene pegmatite was found to be unsatisfactory as to speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and range of analysis. A spectrographic method is described for the determination of beryllium. Samples are ground, mixed with borax, high-purity, flake graphite, and an internal standard; then they are fused, reground, pelletized, and excited with a high-voltage-spark discharge. Investigation of several spectrographic techniques to overcome matrix effects are described. The method developed gives results for beryllium in the concentration range from 0.002 to 5.0 percent; the average probable error of duplicate determinations was below 3.0 percent of the quantity present. INTRODUCTION The main source of beryllium in pegmatite is the mineral, beryl. Many of the conventional methods for the determination of beryllium in beryl are not suitable for control purposes because of lack of speed and accuracy, especially in the range below a few tenths percent. Beryl resists the usual chemical attack and can be lost in a hurried chemical analysis.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

Surface limitations and a need for more direct transportation routes require serious consideration be given to the development of underground construction works in geotechnically unfavourable conditions. Due to geographical and logistical limitations, the construction of these underground works is restricted to difficult ground conditions that require temporary pre-support before excavation in order to avoid tunnel collapse or severe surface settlement. One type of pre-support is the umbrella arch system, which has been gaining popularity due to cost and time commitment in comparison with other pre-support systems (e.g., ground freezing). The umbrella arch system has been employed with significant frequency around the world, yet without a complete understanding about the mechanical response of the system. As such, literature has found the temporary support system to be both under and over designed with regard to safety and/or economical impact. The authors of this paper have made three major contributions to increase understanding of the umbrella arch system and to help optimize the design process. Firstly, the authors have developed nomenclature in order to categorize and define umbrella arch elements and systems, which also stimulated the creation of the empirically driven Umbrella Arch Selection Chart. Secondly, the authors have established a design methodology that is primarily based on advanced numerical modelling techniques to aid in the optimized design of the umbrella arch arrangement for site specific conditions. Thirdly, the authors have developed a semi-analytical model for umbrella arch systems employed in squeezing ground conditions by incorporating elastic foundation theory as well as convergence confinement theory. These three major contributions to such a widely employed tunnelling pre-support system will be introduced and explained in detail, and will include discussion of how each is incorporated in the complete tunnel support design process and throughout the construction and monitoring phase of a project.

"The petrographic components of any particular rank of coal often show some distinct physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, their pro-portionate distribution in a coal greatly influences the technological behaviour of the coal.In any size or gravity separation of a coal, the petrographic constituents become segregated to different degrees in some preferred size or specific gravity range. Therefore, a knowledge of the petrographic nature of the washed and/or screened fractions is often considered essential in selecting the most efficient method for coal preparation and in exploring the proper evenues for its utilization.A graphical method is described in this paper to indicate the mineral-matter content and the petrographic components of the washed fractions of a coal at different ash levels of separation in the form of a new washability diagram. This diagram can be conveniently used to assess or predict the petrographic composition of clean coal or sinks corresponding to any desired ash level in the cleans. With the help of this diagram, it is also possible to locate the yield level of cleans at which maximum enrichment of vitrinites and exinites occurs with the least amount of mineral-matter content."

Gangue-cemented paste backfill (GCPB), is a well-established green mining technology and significantly improves the recovery rate of mineral resources, prevents mine dynamic disasters, reduces surface subsidence, and consumes a considerable amount of solid waste. The addition of an early strength agent as an additive in cement-based materials provides several security, technical, and economic advantages. In this study, the early strength agent on the early age (3, 7 and 28 days) strength of GCPB is evaluated experimentally. The GCPB specimens have an initial sodium sulfate early strength agent concentration of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%, and the obtained samples were analyzed by testing for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results show that the UCS of the GCPB specimens with sodium sulfate is much higher than that of the blank specimens. When cured for 3 days and 7 days, the strength of GCPB with 2% sodium sulfate increased the most, by 131% and 116% respectively. When cured for 28 days, the strength of GCPB with 1% sodium sulfate increased by 135%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the GCPB with 1% and 2% sodium sulfate had better internal structure compactness, thicker acicular crystals, and more flocs. As a kind of early strength agent, sodium sulfate can react with calcium hydroxide to generate calcium dihydrate sulfate and then react with calcium aluminate; the hydration product (C3A) quickly generates calcium sulfoaluminate hydrate (AFt) needle-shaped crystals, forming an early skeleton and improving the early strength.

In order to derive the population distribution of gold nanoparticle morphologies as a function of size, highresolution electron microscopic (HREM) observations and structural analyses were done for over 4000 particles (3-18 nm) grown by an inert gas aggregation (IGA) source using helium. To obtain structural features threedimensionally and not to skip high-contrast images, twenty photos were taken for each particle by changing tilting angle of a specimen holder in combination with the through-focus procedure. For the reliable structural determinations, HREM images and their tilting sequences were directly compared with multislice-simulation results for icosahedral, decahedral and face-centered cubic morphologies, and finally the population distribution of each morphology was obtained as a function of size. In the present sample, icosahedral particles were dominantly populated over the whole observed size range and decahedral particles with non-spherical truncated bi-pyramid shape were secondly dominant. Even though a large number of sampling has been done, few crystalline particles were observed.

Economically significant gold-silver mineralization occurs in Miocene andesitic flows and tuffs at Golden Cross, eight kilometres northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. The highest grade mineralization occurs in a steeply dipping elongate zone of strong quartz veining and brecciation underlying, but contiguous with, a gently dipping tabular quartz vein stockwork containing potentially open-pittable lower grade gold-silver mineralisation. The stockwork zone is enveloped by argillic alteration and overlain by unaltered Pliocene andesites and recent tephra. Evaluation of the prospect involved underground and surface geologic mapping, rock and soil geochemistry, IP-resistivity, magnetic and gravity surveys as well as 1844 metres of reverse circulation drilling and over 30 000 metres of core drilling. The paper outlines the exploration history of the area and describes the results of the various exploration techniques used at Golden Cross.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reserves of columbium (niobium) minerals in Arkansas and to develop metallurgical methods for concentrating the minerals and extracting the metal. The columbium resources of central Arkansas were explored by drilling and trenching, and a number of samples were taken. On the basis of this exploration the known reserves of the metal were estimated to be over 78,000,000 pounds. The reserves could possibly be extended by additional exploration to 150,000,000 pounds.

"It can be argued that one of the most important property of any material is cost, since this property detennines the applications for which a material can be considered. Despite growing demand and production for commodity metals such as copper, nickel, zinc, lead, and tin, the cost of these metals has been steadily decreasing in real terms. The only way that metal miners and producers can remain financially viable in the long term is by continuing to lower their cost curve through the implementation of new metals production technologies. This paper reviews technological developments in the production of copper, nickel, zinc, lead, and tin that have or threaten to redefine the cost curves for these metals.DisclaimerThe opinions expressed in this paper the author's, and are not necessarily those held by the author's employer, Cominco Ltd.IntroductionThis meeting will discuss many novel technologies and processes for producing metals and materials with specific properties that will enhance the applications ranges for the material or will allow entirely new applications to be developed. However, in every real-world case, the cost of the new material or process is an important property that determines which applications the material or process can be used in. Other properties that are important depend on the applications.A recent press report (1) discussing the potential replacement of aluminum radiators with copper radiators in pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles provides an interesting example to reinforce the importance of cost in materials selection. In this case, the displacement of aluminum by copper is being considered because of the more favorable heat dissipation characteristics of copper. Heat dissipation has become more important due to the development of hotter-burning V-8 and V-6 engines. For this application, engineers also consider cost, weight, size, durability, and manufacturing process. The report stated that the development by the International Copper Association (ICA) of the ""CuproBraze"" manufacturing process for heat transfer products was an important development. This technology produces 845 radiators that weigh less, are more uniform in quality, and are potentially more compact. They are also expected to cost less in high production quantities than copper units produced in the past, last three to four times longer than soldered copper radiators, and the process also eliminates the use of lead solder from the manufacturing process."

A complete mining cycle involves digging, loading, hauling and dumping of the materials. Moving the ore from the pit to the crusher or to the waste dump requires access routes, which are termed haul roads. These roads have to be designed, constructed and maintained. A review of the literature indicates a common consensus among researchers that there should be a balance between haul road economics and safety of the road users. However, there is no universally accepted theory on the design of haul road geometry and, in particular, road dimensions. The current industry practice is based on empirical data and rules of thumb developed by engineers. Therefore, this paper will use the overlooked and less valued branch of mathematics, arithmetic progression, to derive a road width equation. It is beyond the scope of this paper to discuss all road design components. The focus will be on the geometric aspects, which more often have a direct impact on road safety. In this paper, the current design practices and techniques for haul road geometrics design will be explored, using arithmetic progression to formulate road width equations, case examples to apply the equation and then validating the results with conventional techniques that have confirmed the reliability of road width equations, thus eliminating use of tables during design.

"The author will review the early history of shaft sinking as well as focus on the improvements made in shaft design and construction over the last fifty years (1970 to 2019) to predict how shaft sinking will change over the next fifty years and describe what the shaft sinking world might look like in 2070. INTRODUCTION It is a great honour to be one of your keynote speakers for the Fourth International Conference on Shaft Design and Construction being held in Toronto in November 2019. This is one of the opportunities we have to thank the Mining Companies of the world as well as the industries and companies we serve for their support of the mining contracting and shaft sinking business of Canada and the world at large. Many of these companies are represented here today. Without your support many of the innovations we will talk about today would not be possible. We would also like to thank all the companies that work with us in our business including all the contractors and suppliers who provide the various services we require. These include equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, project management companies and suppliers large and small who cater to our every need as quickly as possible. Without all these partners we would not be as good as we are. Many of these companies are our sponsors this week. Thank you from all of us! This is also an appropriate time to pause and think about those Shaft Sinkers we have lost and those who have been injured on our projects around the world. Please bow your head and remember the Shaft Sinkers you have worked with, who did not return home or those who returned home injured. Think about how we can continue the work of making shafts safer every day as we go forward with our projects so everyone goes home to their families safe and sound. Pause for a minute and thank you. The subject matter we have chosen to discuss today is “Shaft Sinking in the Next Five Decades”. How will the work be done, how fast will it be done, what will it cost, and why we think this may occur? It is appropriate to consider this over the next few days with this auspicious group we have assembled. Today, we will look back at all the advances that have been made over the last many years and look ahead to the future to attempt to predict what shaft sinking will look like in 2070. When I look around the room I recognize that many of us will not be around then so we need not worry about being wrong. Suffice it to say that the next 50 years will be very interesting and exciting for the shaft sinking business."
