One of the first matters to receive attention from the Bureau of Mines when it was authorized to undertake investigations relating to wastes in the mineral industries was the smoke problem at smelting and ore-roasting plants. This bulletin is published by the bureau primarily for persons who seek information on the subject of metallurgical smoke but are unacqllainted with the technical language of metallurgy. It is, of course, not possible to free a techniCal subject entirely from teclmicalities, but, 80 far as possible, statements are made in plain and simple English. Metallurgical smoke causes considerable friction between the metallurgical industry and agriculture in certain parts of the country. Owners of smelting plants are making every effort to devise ways and means to do away with possible damage and annoyance from smoke and are meeting with success. The problem is peculiarly difficult in this country because of the large tonnages of material that must be handled. The solution of the problem is not yet at hand and much work still remains to be done. As the mineral industry is one of the great basic industries of the country and of necessity is entitled to full consideration, it should be accorded freedom to work out the smoke problem to the benefit of all concerned. The effort is made in this paper to present the problem of metallurgical smoke as it actually exists, without bias of any kind. The writer takes this opportunity to express his indebtedness to the sources of information on which he drew, many of which are enumerated in the selected bibliography at the end of this paper. In connection with the author's use of the present tense in describing plants and methods, the reader should note that none of the references in that bibliography is of later date than 1913. Much information was obtained by personal visits and by correspondence, and thanks are hereby tendered to all persons who kindly furnished data. The writer desires to thank particularly F. G. (Extractive Metallurgy)degree The concepts behind support vector machines are very interesting both in theory and in practice, as they are based on a universal constructive learning procedure derived from the statistical learning theory developed by Vapnik. In this paper, their application to time series modelling is considered by means of simulated data from an autocatalytic reactor. In particular, reconstruction methods from non-linear dynamics are used to define a state space model for the process. Because of the importance of oil-shale reserves the Bureau or Mines resumed research investigations in this field beginning in 1944. The Bureau early decided to build a Large-scale demonstration plant to accomplish the dual purpose of obtaining design data and to produce crude shale oil for refining studies. Two 40-ton-Capacity batch N-T-U (Nevada-Texas-Utah) retorts were completed for this purpose in 1947. After a preliminary operation, the plant was used to investigate process variables of air rate, recycle gas rate, and shale particle size and crude. Correlations obtained from these variables are presented in this report. Researchers concluded that recycle gas was not necessary for efficient operation of the process. Short comings of the batch method of processing the oil shale are pointed out in the report. Several periods of prolonged production operations were carried out. During these periods, the retorts were operated to produce as much crude oil per day as possible. The lifetime operation of the N-T-U retorts was divides into three periods, namely, preliminary operation, process variable study, and production operation. During the preliminary operation, 187 runs were made with a total of 7,596 tons of raw shale used to produce 3,688 barrels of crude shale oil. During the process variable study, 179 runs were made with a consumption of 7,494 tons of raw shale and a production of 4,218 barrels of crude shale oil. The production operation consisted of 554 runs in which 22,457 tons of raw shale was used to produce 12,359 barrels of crude shale ail. The overall total for the lifetime operation of the retorts consisted of 920 runs with a total consumption of 37,547 tons of raw shale and a production if 20,265 barrels of crude shale oil.

Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential; but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for bringing in a prospect and making it a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is headed by an engineer-promoter who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the final operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

Thennodynamic properties of several quaternary systems are calculated using our recently modified Margules equations. The modified Margules equations are expressed up to infinite order in the vicinity of solvent. Quaternary system of one solvent and three,solute partials are derived. First order interaction coefficients of binary, ternary and cross -interaction parameters of quaternary system are used to'evaluate the partial functions. In the original fonn of Margules equations,derived partial functions are convergent and same 'as Unified ,Interaction Parameter Fonnalism. But considering up to infinite order of the Margules coefficients, the functions are divergent, in order to overcome this restriction, Margules equations are modified to get consistent equations. Derived partial functions are thennodynamica Hy consistent with Maxwell and Gibbs Duhem relations. The derived logarithmic activity coefficient of the solvent and solutes are consistent with the ternary systems. The calculated data, ie., activity coefficient values of nitrogen and interaction coefficients are in good agreement with the data of Fe-Cr-V -N. Fe-Ni-V -N, Fe-Cr-Ta-N and Fe-Ni-Ta-N systems.

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.

The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

The aim of this paper is basically to show progress in the study of nanosecond processes involved in the disintegration and breaking-up of mineral complexes with fine noble metals. We studied the influence of nanosecond High-Power Electromagnetic Pulses (HPEMP) on the physical and technological properties of refractory gold-containing ores and beneficiation products. Experimental data are presented to confirm the formation of breakdown channels and selective disintegration of mineral complexes as a result of pulse irradiation, which makes for efficient access of lixiviant solutions to precious metal grains and enhanced precious metal recovery into lixivia during leaching. Preliminary processing of gravity concentrate with a HPEMP resulted in significant increase of gold and silver extraction into lixivia during the cyanidation stage, with gold recovery increased by ~31% (from 51.2% in a blank test to 82.3% after irradiation). Gold recovery from stale gold-containing dressing tailings products increased after pulses-irradiation from 8-12% to 80-90%.

Environmental investigations have been undertaken by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) since 1981 when the Ok Tedi Environmental Study was commenced. Environmental monit- oring and management programmes were implemented in 1983. The programmes included water quality monitoring, river flow and sediment monitoring, surveillance of aquatic biological communities and a health and nutrition survey of the local people. These original programmes have continued, and additional programmes of work have been developed and revised to reflect changing operations and the need to focus investigations on specific areas and issues of concern. In April 1990, following the establishment by the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) of environmental management criteria for the Fly River system, compliance monitoring programs were introduced. Details of the compliance and additional monitoring programmes undertaken by OTML throughout the Ok Tedi and Fly catchments, including programmes of investigation in the Fly River estuary, Gulf of Papua and Torres Strait, are presented.

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

In the annual report under the Explosives Act for 1905, H.M.inspectors state that over 90 percent of the accidents causing death or personal injury occurred in the use of explosives and under miscellaneous conditions to which the controlling provisions of the Act do not apply, and that such accidents caused 43 out of the 50 deaths, and 312 out of 348 cases of injury. The number of accidents grouped under the heading of “Use and Miscellaneous” is less than that for 1904 - viz., 281 against 301. By these accidents 43 persons were killed and 312 injured, as compared with 39 killed and 343 injured in 1904

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

A petrographic and microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in the Kentstown Granite, crosscutting quartz (VI) and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the granite and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the overlying sediments was performed on samples taken from the borehole. Comparisons of the type 1, type 2 and type 3 fluid inclusion populations recorded in the present study with those from other Irish Caledonian granites strongly suggest a similar fluid evolutionary history. Furthermore, the low-temperature CaC12-rich brines (type 5) of this study, which must be syn- to post-Lower Carboniferous in age, have correlatives both in Irish Caledonian granites and in the Lower Carboniferous base-metal deposits of the Irish midlands

This report presents the results of studies of Kennecott Copper Corporation's tailings embankment at Magna, Utah. The stability studies described were performed on only one cross section of the embankment, utilizing; data obtained from drilling, sampling, and testing, which was limited in nature. The main objective of the data collection was to provide background information to support the overall research effort. Because of this limited scope, it is not possible to evaluate the degree of safety or adequacy of the embankment or disposal system, and the information and data contained in the body of this report must be judged in that light. The first part of this report contains discussion of site geology and seismicity, pertinent information on the refuge disposal system, a discussion of the tailings materials characteristics, a summary of the engineering analyses, and A bibliography. The second tart (appendices) contains basic geologic and engineering data supporting the discussions in the first part of the report.

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land.
