In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Boart Longyear Poland and KGHM, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a single-boom, single operator drill module for installation of 1.2 meter expansion bolt in a 1.6 meter height mine. The objective was to produce a machine to provide ergonomic improvements for the operator while working in the mine environment. This dictated the requirement for a small easily controlled, maintenance friendly design with a remote operator?s control station. The selected design method was to use starter and finisher drill steels. This combination, requiring a number of mechanized machine motions, provides the ability to drill the required depth in the specified mine height. To accomplish the task from a remote location, a conscious decision was made to employ current technology in the form of small pressure compensated hydraulics and electronic controls. The result of the design method is a modular assembly with each sub-component designed to be replaceable and adjustable independently from other machine components. The low profile remote roof bolting module is made up of six major sub-components. Each major component is painted a different color to help the operator make the visual connection from the drill module to the operator?s control/display monitor. The Stabilizer (White) secures the module between the mine top and floor. The Drillhead (Orange) produces the drilling rotation and torque but also must slide out of position to allow the machine to manipulate the drill consumables. The Drill Steel Carousel (Blue) holds and indexes the starter and finisher steel from position to position. The Manipulator Arm (Green) moves and guides the drill steels and drill consumables from position to position during installation. The Roof Reference Guide (Yellow) locates the mine roof and guides the drill steels and drill consumables into position. The Linear Bolt Carousel (Purple) holds the drill consumables. The low profile remote roof bolting module allows the operator to drill and install a roof bolt manually or automatically with the push of a button. This design substantially reduces the operator?s exposure in the mine environment, as well as inherent pinch points and rotary hazards. SABC circuits have gained widespread attention within China, and are being gradually applied to many mines. However, the domestic knowledge of comminution process is still relatively basic, and the design and production management of the application of SABC technology lack guidance of scientific theories. This research project focuses on the Phase I SABC milling circuits of Wu Shan Porphyry copper mine. Targeting the design and operation problems of existing process and circuit, and without increased investment and alterations in equipment, the new technologies will combine ordinary crushing and grinding theories as theoretical guidance, and borrow JK Simulation Software (JKSimMet) for analysis in order to optimize the comminution process, efficiently allocate production output and energy consumption, eventually resulting in increased production and energy efficiency. Using JKSimMet Simulation Software, and combining theoretical optimizing and practical production techniques, as well as the on-site situation, the eventual SABC comminution process and circuit optimization plan is: increasing the grinding Ball charge from 8% to 10% v/v in the SAG mill; Setting the Ball charge in the Ball mill to 27% v/v and the maximum operating power draw to 5 800kW; replacing the HP Series crusher with a TRIO TC84 crusher, which is without a power controller, and adding a pebble bin. The final optimization result is: Maximum system processing capacity increased between 20%-26.7%, specific energy consumption reduced by more 2.0 kWh/t, creating an economic benefit of over 300 million RMB, thus achieving the goal of increased production, reduced energy consumption, and improved profitability.

One of the safety and health research programs of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center was the evaluation of technology that will provide remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment in underground room-and-pillar mining. The purpose of this effort was to enable workers to be located away from the hazardous and unhealthful coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies were developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate, reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After investigating several different types of navigation sensors, researchers selected the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) as showing the most promise. It was installed on a continuous mining machine at our Mining Equipment Test Facility. Extensive testing at an open pit (OP) site was also performed. This report describes the INS as it was employed on the mining machine in the laboratory, in the field, and OP tests, and provides the accuracy and performance results of the OP and highwalltests.

A one-dimensional wave equation based algorithm for estimation of shaft and toe resistance of driven piles using High Strain Testing (HST) data is presented. The pile is represented by a uniform elastic bar, while the soil around the pile is assumed as a homogenized isotropic medium, and Smith model is adopted to represent soil-pile interaction in the wave equation analysis. In most cases, the displacement of pile particles along pile shaft is greater than recoverable soil deformation (i.e., soil quake in Smith model). Therefore, static shaft resistance could be reasonably assumed to be totally mobilized during pile driving. Smith damping factor is used to account for combined dynamic and rate effect. Force and velocity time histories measured at the pile head are used as input boundary conditions in an analytical solution of the one-dimensional wave equation. As a result, two unknown parameters, static shaft resistance and Smith damping factor, can be incorporated into the one-dimensional wave equation and determined analytically for the time duration prior to the first downward wave reaching the pile toe. Then, soil resistance and Smith damping factor at pile toe can be further determined. The advantage of the proposed analysis technique is that the Smith damping factor and the static soil resistance can be directly determined based on the closed-form solution of the one-dimensional wave equation, which is computationally efficient. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the use of the proposed method to determine the pertinent Smith model constants and the static resistances.

This paper addresses the experience designing and installing bored piles for the King’s Cross area. This includes continuous flight auger and rotary bored piles, with a range of diameters between 600 mm and 1200 mm, reaching a maximum depth of 56 m below ground level. Existing Network Rail Thameslink twin bored running tunnels are located directly beneath the subject plots. These tunnels have an external diameter of 6.6 m and the crowns of the tunnels are very shallow, in some cases just 10 m below the existing ground level. Some plots needed piles to be installed in close proximity to the tunnels, which required additional control measures and contingency plans. Pile verticality was monitored as the tip of each pile advanced and in-tunnel monitoring readings were verified and are presented. Lessons learned from designing, installing and testing the piles and monitoring the tunnels are addressed in this paper.

The demand for elements such as nickel, cobalt, titanium and gold in various applications has increased significantly. Innovation to recover these elements now plays a major role in metallurgical processes as established technologies have challenges in treating the types of ores that are available while meeting the increasingly stricter environmental regulations. Alternative chloride based processes have been developed that can be used to recover the value elements from the available feed stocks with potentially lower environmental impact. Chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes have several advantages, including higher leachability of complex ores/tailings and relative stability of chloro-complexes of the metals. Process Research ORTECH Inc. (PRO) has developed mixed-chloride process flowsheets, where innovative solvent extraction process steps are used for the separation of nickel, cobalt, titanium and gold from their respective chloride solutions. This paper will discuss the potential aqueous chloro-chemistry of these metals and separation reaction mechanisms involved in the solvent extraction process.

The Cowarra gold mine is at latitude 36°O'S. and longitude 149°19'E. which is roughly 20 miles north-north-east of Cooma.The deposit was· originally worked towards the end of the last century, but the presence of sulphides associated with the gold in the primary zone caused cessation of work when that zone was reached.GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATIONThe principal country rocks are sandstones and shales of Silurian and Ordovician age, both very strongly folded with structural pitches ranging from a few degrees to almost vertical. The mine proper is within Silurian rocks and the main orebody (there are several minor parallel bodies) is developed within a shear striking approximately north, dipping approximately 70° east, and ranging in width from 2 ft to 15 ft but averaging about 4 ft.This shear is impregnated with quartz and sulphides with which the gold is associated. The predominant sulphide is pyrite though pyrrhotite is commonly present in quantity.Arsenopyrite and bornite are present in smaller amounts.Stillwell (1936, 1937a, 1937b, 1938, 1941) has published five mineragraphic reports on the ore.The various levels have been mapped in detail (Figs. 1-3) and the No. 2 level plan (Fig. 1) shows the general relationship of shearing, as now indicated by mineralization, and faulting. This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

During cyanidation of mercury-bearing gold-silver ores, significant amounts of mercury are extracted. The presence of mercury decreases. gold loading and increases mercury stripping time on activated carbon, complicates fire refining of the gold cathodes, and creates a potential health hazard. Addition of calcium sulfide (CaS) to the cyanide leach slurry precipitates the solubilized mercury but also some silver. The Bureau of Mines investigated silver loss during CaS precipitation of mercury. Addition of 0.1 lb CaS per short ton ore to a mercury-bearing gold-silver ore precipitated both mercury and silver. However, if copper was added with CaS, or if the ore contained copper, much of the sil-ver loss was prevented. Addition of 235 ppm Cu with 0.1 lb/st CaS, prior to carbon-in-pulp adsorption, resulted in 89-to 97-pct, 80-to 91-pct, and O-pct adsorption of the solubilized gold, silver, and mer-cury, respectively, on the activated carbon.

In 1999, 1,100 million short tons of coal were produced in the United States, 38 percent from the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region. This coal has low ash content, and has sulfur content in compliance with Clean Air Act standards (U.S. Statutes at Large, 1990). The National Coal Resource Assessment for this region includes geologic, stratigraphic, palynologic, and geochemical studies and resource calculations for 18 major coal zones in the Powder River, Williston, Green River, Hanna, and Carbon Basins. Calculated resources are 660,000 million short tons. Results of the study are available in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1625-A (Fort Union Coal Assessment Team, 1999) and Open-File Report 99-376 (Flores and others, 1999) in CD-ROM format.

In Rotterdam in the Netherlands the project ‘De Zalmhaven’ is being developed. The project consists of the realization of houses, parking facilities, two residential towers of 70 m and a residential high rise of 215 m. An artist impression for the project is given in figure 1. For the high rise a new development in the use of large diameter, drilled piles with a steel casing has been successfully utilized. In this article the installation method of 65 m long steel drilled piles in two consecutive sections is presented. The settlements for the building (and the influence on its surroundings) have been analyzed in detail using 3D Finite Element calculations, which will also be discussed. Finally there is focus on the results of settlement measurements carried out during construction in relation to the settlement prognosis.

This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

An investigation was undertaken to ascertain the suitability of four selected low grade, South African coals for gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed for production of synthesis gas and for the development of integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC). This study consisted of the characterization of the coals, laboratory evaluation of intrinsic reactivity, and experimentation with a pilot-plant fluidized bed gasifier. Results of the characterization experiments show that the selected coals are high in ash, rich in inertinites, very dense (low porosity), with low caking indices and high ash fusion temperatures. Reactivity measurements with a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), under reaction rate controlling conditions with carbon dioxide, showed that the reactivity of the coal chars decreases with increase in rank of the coal, as expressed by the vitrinite random reflectance and carbon content of the parent coals. The fixed carbon conversion achieved in the fluidized bed gasifier also correlates well with the rank parameter of the coal, with higher conversions being obtained with the lower rank coals. Thermal shattering and attrition of the coal particles produce significant amounts of fines, which correlate with the grindability indices, and no agglomeration (non-caking) was observed. It is concluded that fluidized bed gasifiers are able to utilize typical low grade, high ash South African coals for synthesis gas production and for inclusion in integrated gasification combined cycles for power generation.

South Africa?s Northern Cape Province houses a variety of gemstone minerals. Diamonds remain the primary gemstone in the province, but there are also tiger?s eye, sugilite, rose quartz, jasper, amethyst, amazonite, tourmaline, and topaz deposits. This paper gives an overview of the tiger?s eye (TE) mining sector in the Northern Cape, with the objective of assessing the potential of TE to contribute to job creation and poverty alleviation in the province. Mining of TE started in 1803, but gained momentum during the 1960s. Mining is conducted on a small-scale basis, and in most cases without any legal framework. The majority of the residents are not benefiting from TE. It has been reported that an estimated R700 000 to R800 000 worth of TE is leaving the country every week through illegal trading. The potential for TE mining to contribute to socioeconomic development is hindered by illegal operations, lack of technical skills and knowledge, exploitation by dealers, lack of market information, community rivalries, and absence of value addition. A multi-stakeholder approach is needed to formalize the sector and reap the benefits. Mintek is spearheading a TE project in the Prieska area of the Northern Cape, which aims to establish a gemmological centre where TE can be beneficiated into saleable and high-value products..

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

Introduction For many years the immense deposits of bituminous sands of northern Alberta have been attracting the attention of our governments, engineers and .scientists ( 6). Undoubtedly these bituminous sands represent one of the greatest potential resources of liquid fuels in the world. However, their commercial development has been retarded by the complexities of the technological problem and by the economic factors involved in the processing of the sands. The technological problem has been attacked from several angles ( 2, 3, 1, 11), and cold water separation of bitumen is one of them. To the ore dressing engineer, the cold water process is of utmost importance since, by the use of standard ore dressing machinery, it accomplishes most efficiently and economically the separation of bitumen from bituminous sands. The significance of using ore dressing equipment was especially enhanced by the fact that the scientific principles which underlie the design of standard machines were demonstrated in the cold water separation process with an extraordinary clarity. This greatly facilitated the analysing of limitations and advantages of different machines during-the pilot plant investigations and helped to complete the investigations practically in the allotted time.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.
