By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched. A new paradigm divides pillar failure into three categories:

The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. This study investigates the changes in seismic velocity of rockmass before and after three major seismic events to determine any potential identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with these events. Induced stress measurement is one of the challenging tasks in deep underground mining, with extreme impacts on the safety and stability of the mine. This study used p-wave passive seismic tomography to image the velocity redistribution within a rockmass, which can indicate induced stress level changes in the rockmass and detect the velocity changes that might precede a major seismic event or a rockburst. The ultimate goal of this research focus is to develop another tool for the deep-mining community that will help to increase safety and efficiency. For this purpose, the hypothesis of conventional mechanics, which implies induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs, is evaluated. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring; however, the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer's recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using Sewage sludge as starting material. The ACs were pyrolyzed in an inert atmosphere at 550 °C after independent chemical treatment with ZnCl2 or KOH with ratio of 1:1. The materials were used as adsorbents for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized using adsorption/desorption nitrogen isotherm, SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results showed that copper removal could be linked to surface pH and compounds present on the surface of adsorbent. KOH-treated adsorbent has smaller surface area (186 m2 g-1) than ZnCl2-treated adsorbent (192 m2 g-1), however, KOH-treated adsorbent exhibited higher removal of Cu(II). The performance of KOH-treated adsorbent could be attributed to the presence of basic groups on the adsorbent surface. Liu isotherm model gave the best description of the equilibrium data. From the Liu isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities at 298 K for KOH-treated, ZnCl2-treated and sewage sludge (without inorganic activation) adsorbents are 31.85, 19.79 and 3.513 mg g-1, respectively. The best desorption experiment was obtained using 1.50 mol L-1 of HNO3 as eluent. Recoveries of Cu(II) from Cu(II)-loaded adsorbents are 98.9% (ZnCl2-treated) and 95.5% (KOH-treated.

Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler?s performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of ~43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world?s first FW/BENSON? vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 × 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was clone through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will he useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetimes. "The Nechalacho rare metal deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is currently being taken through Feasibility Study by Avalon Rare Metals Inc. QEMSCAN analysis and supplementary electron microprobe analysis were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and determine REE distribution among the minerals. QEMSCAN mineralogy was performed to provide textural information on the mineralization, determine the variability of the ore and identify REE domains, and the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix consists predominantly of silicate minerals. The REE minerals include allanite, monazite, synchysite, columbite, fergusonite, and bastnaesite. Zircon is present in considerable amounts and is a REE carrier. Fergusonite and zircon account for most of the HREE, and monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite the LREE. QEMSCAN mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data are implemented to define the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, and predict recoveries and grades.INTRODUCTIONThe term rare earth elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties.Economic and potentially economic REE deposits form two main groups, a more commonly occurring “light rare earth element” (LREE) group containing lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium and a less commonly occurring “heavy rare earth element” (HREE) group which, in addition to the LREE, contains elevated concentrations of the more valuable REE, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, yttrium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and scandium. The first group is hosted primarily by carbonatites and the second by highly alkaline (Na + K > Al) silicate igneous rocks. The LREE are produced mainly from bastnaesite, monazite, etc., while HREE are produced almost exclusively from low-grade secondary ion adsorption clay deposits in which the REE are adsorbed onto the surfaces of kaolinite and halloysite, clay minerals produced by the weathering of granite and sediments. HREE are also found in fegusonite, zircon, xenotime, etc but are not produced presently from these minerals. China is responsible for 97% of the World’s production of the REE, mainly from the giant Bayan Obo, carbonatite-related deposit and from the clay deposits mentioned above.Quantitative automated mineralogy is increasingly being applied to ore deposits. It helps users to understand and improve mineralogical parameters for geological and metallurgical purposes. Data include textural characterization, to quantification and distribution of ore and gangue minerals, liberation and association of the REE minerals. The data can be used to define mineralogical domains and predict the metallurgical response of the ore (Gunning, de Souza, & Grammatikopoulos, 2009)."

We had a cold, gray winter here in Kansas City and I spent a lot of time watching out my den window at the squirrels and birds trying to get by in the lousy weather. I remember too well working in the cold, loading shots. I was frostbitten several times since I couldn’t tie in MS connectors with gloves on. Those old connectors had a piece of detonating cord on either end of a metal tube that held the delay and you tied them to the trunk lines with square knots. Doing this on a “warm” day in Alaska or Montana shooting ditch for a pipeline could be a frosty experience. Also remember how hard it was to connect up electric caps (detonators to you new guys) in the cold. Now I don’t want you to feel sorry for me ‘cause I suspect most of you younger fellows have also paid your dues in the cold and for that matter in the heat too. Wowee, the heat at the bottom of a Chicago dolomite quarry in August was enough to fry the brains of all that were there. Maybe that’s why the third deck of my brains doesn’t exist.

One of the requirements for the successful waging of war is an unlimited supply of iron ore. In the spring of 1941 the demand for iron ore was expected to exceed the supply. This was particularly so in the case of high-grade lump iron ore, essential to the open-hearth process of making steel. The bulk of Canada's iron ore was imported from the United States. At this time, Canada was making every effort to conserve United States funds for more vital purchases. For these reasons, the development of Canadian iron ore resources became of prime importance. Several companies undertook investigations and one of these examined the old Josephine deposit. Location The Josephine property is in the district of Algoma, in the Michipicoten area of the Sault Ste. Marie mining division of Ontario. It is 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and 20 rail-miles east of Michipicoten harbour, on lake Superior (see Figure 1). Transportation in the area is furnished by the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay railway. The Michipicoten branch of this line passes within a mile of the Josephine mine. Michipicoten harbour provides a port through which iron ore is currently shipped. Power in the area is supplied by the Great Lakes Power Company, with generating plants on Michipicoten river, on Montreal river, and on St. Mary's river at Sault Ste. Marie. A series of transmission lines cover the district and one of these is connected to the Josephine mine by a 3 ½-mile branch line. History The Josephine property was staked by Alois Goetz in 1899. Before the claims could be recorded, the township in which they are located was given to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay railway as part of a land grant. As a result, the ownership remained in dispute until August 24th, 1906, when a settlement was arbitrated by the Honourable Frank Cochrane. His ruling is interesting and is quoted in part.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. "The angle of break is the acute angle created by the coal seam bedding plane and caving line formed by roof strata movement after extraction of a longwall panel. It has a significant influence on stress redistribution both in the gob and abutment. Throughout numerical simulation investigations up to now, little attention has been paid to it, or an angle of break of 90° was used, which, however, is not realistic. This paper presents a detailed numerical modelling incorporating the angle of break against Zhenchengdi Coal Mine. The angle of break was obtained through cross-measure boreholes. Hoek-Brown constitutive model was used to simulate the rock masses. Double-yield constitutive model, which was best fitted by Salamon’s model, was used to simulate the gob. The results show that a “/ \ shape” shear failure zone develops around the gob. The shear failure in the floor along the panel edge is due to opposite shear of rock mass on two sides of the caving line, and the number of yielded zones within the gob floor close to the gob edge is smaller. According to the research, the entry was determined to be driven under the gob edge employing split-level longwall panel layout (SLPL). The other numerical simulation for SLPL shows that stress around the god-side entry is much smaller than pre-mining stress, and the area of intact rock mass at the elevating section is larger than conventional layout. Numerical modelling was then validated by field observation.INTRODUCTIONTo solve low recovery and ground control problems in longwall mining with top coal caving (LTCC) due to large gate pillar or chain pillar, gob-side entry approach is becoming increasingly popular (Nazimko, 1994; Li et al., 2016; Zhao, Wang, and Su, 2017). Gob-side entry is actually a combination of the gateroad, pillar, and gob, which is a typical panel layout with slender pillar or artificial pillar or wall. The abutment load has a profound impact on stability of the gate pillar, as well as the gob-side entry. Better estimates of abutment loading profiles will result in improved evaluations of design of pillar and gob-side entry (Larson and Lavoie, 2016)."

Properties of coal-water slurries were studied in two separate phases: a rheological phase and a pipeline phase. The purpose of the study was to investigate the rheology of fine coal slurries to determine the effect of fine particles in a coal-water mixture on the economic and operational aspects of a slurry pipeline. The slurries consisted of 6x10, 100x200, and 200x0 mesh coal in water. A fourth slurry consisted of a mixture of the 6x10 and 200x0 mesh coal. Brookfield and Stormer rotational viscometers were used to obtain or simulate rheograms for a range of fine coal concentrations, temperatures, and particle sizes. All the slurries were pumped through a 1-inch diameter acrylic pipe. The fine coal slurries were found to encompass four distinct rheological models. The narrow size distribution of the coal slurries was apparently responsible for the high pipewall friction losses, more so than the particle size. A scale-up method applicable to Bingham plastics was found satisfactory for predicting pipeline headlosses of fine coal slurries from rheology data.

"INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit. This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd - Asia Pacific Iron Ore's (formerly Portman Iron Ore Limited) K deposit (Dowd's Hill), at its Koolyanobbing operation in Western Australia, hosts enriched magnetite mineralisation below the presently mined haematite-goethite ore zone. Two distinct northwest-southeast elongated, highly magnetic anomalous bodies that dip to the north-east appear to be sourced by this deeper mineralisation. Magnetic modelling indicates significant remanent magnetisation with Qratios around 1.5, directed shallow down. The north-west anomaly is overlain by a ridge of uneconomic banded iron formation (BIF) and the present waste dump, whereas the south-east body was partly exposed during ongoing mining of overlying haematite-goethite ore. Sections of the magnetite mineralisation in this south-east anomaly were intersected previously by diamond drill holes. Review of the historic cores identified potential magnetite enrichment, with grades and mineralogy that might be amenable to beneficiation. A first-phase reverse circulation drilling program was designed to further delineate the trend and extent of the two anomalies. The following magnetite mineralisation assemblages are recognised from cores, reverse circulation (RC) drill cuttings and pit mapping of the south-east magnetic body: higher-grade magnetite-haematite ¦ goethite and magnetite ¦ pyrite and lower-grade, recrystallised magnetite-quartz (BIF), magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-talc and minor magnetite-bearing mafic schist. Disseminated specularite is locally present in theassemblages. Talc-schist and massive pyrite occur along the footwall contact. Magnetic susceptibility measured from drill chips within the magnetite-enriched zones reveals an apparent susceptibility values range of 0.2 to 1.3 SI. Preliminary results from Satmagan and Davis tube recovery analysis shows that the magnetite content in these mineralised zones correlate well with existing geophysical data and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Float-and-sink tests indicate what results are obtainable by gravity separation and rare therefore an invaluable adjunct to most coal-cleaning processes. However, it is difficult to make a direct interpretation of float-and-sink data on coal, and several systems for interpreting them have been proposed. Of these, that developed and used extensively by Bird3/, Yancey4/, and Gandrud5/ is considered by the author to be the most satisfactory. It makes use of four interrelated curves (hereafter referred to as be "washability curves"). The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.
